Replacing Plastic with Bamboo: A Review of the Properties and Green Applications of Bamboo-Fiber-Reinforced Polymer Composites

Natural fiber composites are receiving more and more attention because of their greenness and low cost. Among natural fibers, bamboo is characterized by fast growth, a short cultivation period, high strength and good toughness, and is one of the strongest natural fibers in the world. A bamboo-fiber-reinforced polymer composite (BFRPC) has the characteristics of high mechanical strength, low density, degradability, etc. It has the industrial applicability comparable to metal materials, the same strong corrosion resistance as composites such as glass and carbon fibers, and the same immunity to electromagnetic interference and low thermal conductivity as natural materials. Its unidirectional specific strength and unidirectional specific modulus is higher than that of glass fiber, second only to the extremely high price of carbon fiber, which is playing an increasingly important role in the field of composite materials, and can be widely used in the fields of wind power, construction, aviation, automotive, medical care and so on. At present, it has been initially used in packaging, automotive and transportation fields, and is expected to replace petroleum-based plastics in various fields. In addition to their environmental protection and green production, they have excellent physical properties. This paper provides an overview of the mechanical properties of bamboo-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites and thermoset composites that have been developed so far, such as tensile strength, flexural properties and impact strength. In addition, the prospects of bamboo-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic composites for automotive, packaging and agricultural applications are presented.

The Role of Inorganic Fillers in Electrostatic Discharge Composites

The occurrence of uncontrolled electrostatic discharge (ESD) is among the major causes of damage in unprotected electronic components during industrial processes. To counteract this undesired phenomenon, ESD composites showing static-dissipative and antistatic responses are developed. In particular, static-dissipative materials are able to slow down the flow of electric charges, whereas antistatic materials directly suppress the initial charges induced by undesired charging by properly dispersing conductive fillers within an insulant matrix and thus forming a conductive filler network. In this context, the purpose of this review is to provide a useful resume of the main fundamentals of the technology necessary for facing electrostatic charging. The formation mechanisms of electrostatic charges at the material surface were described, providing a classification of ESD composites and useful characterization methods. Furthermore, we reported a deep analysis of the role of conductive fillers in the formation of filler networks to allow electric charge movements, along with an overview of the different classes of inorganic conductive fillers exploitable in ESD composites, evidencing pros/cons and criticalities of each category of inorganic fillers.

Alginate-Halloysite Nanocomposite Aerogel: Preparation, Structure, and Oil/Water Separation Applications

Environmental remediation using green approaches for addressing various pollution-related issues, especially water pollution, is in high demand. Here, we designed an environmentally friendly, low-cost, and stable sodium alginate-halloysite clay composite aerogel (SAHA) for oil/water separation via a two-step synthesis procedure, including ionic crosslinking and freeze-drying. The as-prepared SAHA aerogels were characterized in detail by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transformation infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. Characterization of the SAHA aerogels revealed a three-dimensional porous microstructure with uniformly dispersed halloysite nanotubes (HA) within the alginate matrix. The elemental composition of the hydrogels investigated using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) revealed the presence of minerals, such as magnesium, sodium, aluminum, and silicon in the SAHA aerogels. The presence of a hydrophilic alginate matrix combined with these unique morphological characteristics resulted in SAHA aerogels with underwater oleophobicity and excellent oil/water separation efficiency (up to 99.7%). The ease of fabrication, excellent oil/water separation, and multiple performances make the SAHA aerogel an interesting candidate for practical applications in water recycling.
