Parameter optimization of tetracycline removal by vanadium oxide nano cuboids

Dual valorization of coastal biowastes for tetracycline remediation and biomethane production: A composite assisted anaerobic digestion

Harnessing coastal biowaste for dual valorization in water treatment and biofuel production holds paramount importance for sustainability and resource challenges. This study investigated the potential of engineered composite (CABC) derived from coastal biowaste-based materials for tetracycline (TC) removal and biomethane production. High-yield calcium carbonate (CaCO3; 95.65%; bivalve shells) and biochar (GA-BC; 41.50%; green macroalgae) were produced and used as precursors for CABC. The characterization results revealed presence of β-CaCO3 and ν2-CO3 aragonite in CaCO3, and composite homogeneity was achieved. The CABC exhibited a maximum TC sorption capacity of 342.26 mg/g via synergistic sorption mechanisms (i.e., surface/pore filling, electrostatic attraction, calcium ion exchange, and chelation). Supplementation of anaerobic digestion process with GA-BC, CaCO3, and CABC was investigated via three consecutive cycles. Biochemical methane potential of glucose as a sole substrate was increased from 157.50 to 217.00, 187.00, and 259.00 mL-CH4, while dual substrate (glucose+TC) treatment was increased from 94.5 to 146.5, 129.0, and 153.00 mL-CH4 for GA-BC, CaCO3, and CABC, respectively. Moreover, system stability and TC removal were increased with the addition of GA-BC (40.90%), CaCO3 (16.30%), and CABC (53.70%). Therefore, this study exemplifies the circular bioeconomy approach, demonstrating the sustainable use of biowaste-derived composite for water treatment and biofuel production.

Precursor-oriented design of nano-alumina for efficient removal of antibiotics

Rapid and efficient removal of environmental antibiotics is vital to curb bacterial resistance. Through rational precursors-oriented design, we attain the best Al2O3 absorbent by 500 °C calcination of ammonium aluminium carbonate hydroxide (AACH) precursor from NH4HCO3 route (AACH-NH4HCO3-500) for fast and efficient removal of tetracycline (TC) and other antibiotics from environmental waters including high-salinity wastewater. AACH-NH4HCO3-500 (0.25 g·L-1) can remove (69.92 ± 1.78)% of aqueous TC (0.025 g·L-1) within 5 min and (97.62 ± 2.75)% within 2 h, and the adsorption capacity is 444.4 mg·g-1, which is the highest qmax of TC for the 2 h-adsorptions among numerous adsorbents. AACH-NH4HCO3-500 has fine tolerance to the coexisting substances, and can be easily regenerated and reused, and has no harm even discarded. The relations among the synthetic methods, the structural features, and the adsorption functions of Al2O3 are disclosed through a systematic comparison of the commercial Al2O3 and different Al2O3 nanomaterials attained from three precursors produced by five different routes. The reasons behind the exceptional adsorption performance are discussed throughout. Our findings would facilitate the development of excellent adsorbents for removal of other pollutants.

Hydrothermal synthesis of V2O5/TiO2 decorated graphitic carbon nitride nanocomposite for biomolecule oxidation inhibition and dye degradation applications

Oxides of vanadium, titanium and graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) are well known for their catalytic activities. In order to achieve synergic catalytic effects, a novel nanocomposite (NC) i.e. V2O5/TiO2/g-C3N4 has been synthesized by a very simple, ecofriendly and nonhazardous hydrothermal method. The fabricated NC was characterized employing UV-Visible, FTIR, SEM, and XRD techniques. UV-Visible and FTIR analysis indicated the formation of the nanocomposite and XRD analysis confirmed the association of V2O5 and TiO2 with g-C3N4 in nanocomposite. SEM study indicated the hetero-structure of NC having size ranging from 50 to 80 nm and it was found having hexagonal crystallite structure. The synthesized nanocomposite exhibited excellent scavenging of free radicals DPPH● (91%) and ABTS●+ (64%) that are responsible for the oxidation of biomolecules. Therefore, NC can be claimed having biomolecule oxidation protective potential. In addition, photocatalytic ability for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO) was also achieved up to 94% and 89% respectively. The synthesized novel nanocomposite exhibited excellent potential to remove free radicals and dyes from aqueous medium which can be further used for the environmental remediation.

Removal of toxic lead from aqueous solution using a low-cost adsorbent

Valorization of waste materials and byproducts as adsorbents is a sustainable approach for water treatment systems. Pottery Granules (PG) without any chemical and thermal modification were used as a low-cost, abundant, and environmentally benign adsorbent against Pb(II), the toxic metal in drinking water. The porous structure and complex mineral composition of PG made it an efficient adsorbent material for Pb(II). The effect of key physicochemical factors was investigated to determine the significance of contact time, PG dose, pH, solution temperature, and coexisting ions, on the process. Pb(II) removal increased by PG dose in the range of 5-15 g/L, and agitation time from 5 to 60 min. Increasing Pb(II) concentration led to a drop in Pb(II) removal, however, adsorption capacity increased significantly as concentration elevated. Pb(II) removal also increased significantly from ~ 45% to ~ 97% by pH from 2 to 12. A ~ 20% improvement in Pb(II) adsorption after rising the solution temperature by 30˚C, indicated the endothermic nature of the process. The sorption was described to be a favorable process in which Pb(II) was adsorbed in a multilayer onto the heterogeneous PG surface. The qmax of 9.47 mg/g obtained by the Langmuir model was superior among many reported low-cost adsorbents. The Pb(II) adsorption was described well by the Pseudo- first-order kinetic model. Na⁺, Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺, Cd²⁺, and Zn²⁺ showed a negligible effect on Pb(II) adsorption. However, the presence of Mn²⁺ and Fe²⁺ significantly hindered the process efficacy. In conclusion, the use of waste material such as PG against Pb(II) is a viable option from the economic and effectiveness points of view.

Comparative removal of hazardous cationic dyes by MOF-5 and modified graphene oxide

Among cationic dyes, malachite green (MG) is commonly used for dying purposes and also as an inhibitor in aquaculture, food, health, and chemical industries due to its cytotoxic effects. Therefore, MG removal is essential to keep the ecosystem and human health safety. Adsorption is a viable and versatile option and exploring efficient adsorbents have high priority. Herein, MOF-5 and aminated corn Stover reduced graphene oxide (ACS-RGO) of typical adsorbents of metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) and carbon-based classes were studied for MG removal. MOF-5 and ACS-RGO had a specific surface area and total pore volume of 507.4 and 389.0 m2/g, and 0.271 cm3/g and 0.273 cm3/g, respectively. ACS-RGO was superior for MG adsorption and the kinetic rate coefficient for ACS-RGO was ~ 7.2 times compared to MOF-5. For ACS-RGO, MG removal remained high (> 94%) in a wide range of pH. However, dye removal was pH-dependent for MOF-5 and increased from ~ 32% to ~ 67% by increasing pH from 4 to 12. Increasing dye concentration from 25 mg/L to 100 mg/L decreased adsorption by MOF-5 and ACS-RGO for ~ 30% and 7%, respectively. Dye removal was evident in a few tens of seconds after adding ACS-RGO at doses above 0.5 g/L. A significant loss of 46% in adsorption was observed by decreasing MOF-5 mass from 1 to 0.1 g/L. ACS-RGO removed MG in multilayer with an exceptional adsorption capacity of 1088.27 mg/g. In conclusion, ACS-RGO, and MOF-5 showed promising kinetic rates and adsorption capacities toward MG.

Tetracycline capture from aqueous solutions by nanocomposite of MWCNTs reinforced with glutaraldehyde cross-linked poly (vinyl alcohol)/chitosan

The presence of pharmaceuticals as the emerging contaminates needs novel approaches and new materials to be remediated. This study aimed to develop and apply MWCNTs reinforced with glutaraldehyde cross-linked poly (vinyl alcohol)/chitosan nanocomposite (MWCNTs/CS-PVA/GA NC) for removal of tetracycline (TC) as a model of antibiotics from aqueous solutions. The successful synthesis of NC was supported by techniques of SEM, XRD, TGA, FTIR, and EDX. The prepared NC was then utilized for TC adsorption under the main effective parameters of TC concentration (25-125 mg/L), sonication time (0-8 min), NC dose (1-130 mg), and tempearure (5-45 °C). The process behavior was comparably explored with different methods of central composite design (CCD), artificial neural networks (ANN), and general regression neural network (GRNN). The results showed that under the optimum settings presented by desirability function (DA), in which the respective values for the factors were 125 mg/L, 6.8 min, 130 mg, and 45 °C, the efficiency and adsorption capacity of NC is supposed to be 99.07% and ∼525 mg/g, respectively. From the models studied, although all were able to express the process with satisfactory accuracy, ANN provided the best accuracy and reliability owning to the highest R² (0.999) and lowest RMSE, ADD, MAE. The kinetics, isotherms, and thermodynamic studies showed that the process is fast (over 4.5 min), chemisorption, heterogeneous with multilayer nature, spontaneous, feasible, and endothermic. In addition, the as prepared NC could be recycled for five times without significant fail in its performance. All in all, the developed MWCNTs/CS-PVA/GA NC can be considered as a promising candidate in dealing with aqueous solutions' pollution with antibiotic.

Floating ZnO QDs-Modified TiO2/LLDPE Hybrid Polymer Film for the Effective Photodegradation of Tetracycline under Fluorescent Light Irradiation: Synthesis and Characterisation

In this work, mesoporous TiO₂-modified ZnO quantum dots (QDs) were immobilised on a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) polymer using a solution casting method for the photodegradation of tetracycline (TC) antibiotics under fluorescent light irradiation. Various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques were used to investigate the physicochemical properties of the floating hybrid polymer film catalyst (8%-ZT@LLDPE). The highest removal (89.5%) of TC (40 mg/L) was achieved within 90 min at pH 9 due to enhanced water uptake by the LDDPE film and the surface roughness of the hybrid film. The formation of heterojunctions increased the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The QDs size-dependent quantum confinement effect leads to the displacement of the conduction band potential of ZnO QDs to more negative energy values than TiO₂. The displacement generates more reactive species with higher oxidation ability. The highly stable film photocatalyst can be separated easily and can be repeatedly used up to 8 cycles without significant loss in the photocatalytic ability. The scavenging test indicates that the main species responsible for the photodegradation was O₂^●−. The proposed photodegradation mechanism of TC was demonstrated in further detail based on the intermediates detected by LC-time-of-flight/mass spectrometry (LC/TOF-MS).
