Silver nanoparticles supported on UiO-66 (Zr): As an efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst and efficient adsorbent for removal of indigo carmine

Prevention is better than a cure: A 'zero residual nanoadsorbent toxicity' downstream from its effluent exit point

Here, we offer thoughts concerning a 'zero residual nanoadsorbent toxicity' environmental policy which we strongly advocate. Our discussions in support of this policy are based on the adage 'Prevention is better than cure'. Besides emphasizing the need for strict regulations (regional and international), research and development avenues are highlighted for the technology that can achieve 'zero tolerance' for residual nanoadsorbent levels escaping and building up in receiving ecosystems. We do not oppose nanoadsorbents. On the contrary, their water and wastewater purification potentials are well recognized. However, they should not be permitted to translocate downstream from the exit point of a final effluent.

Heterogeneous activation of self-generated H2O2 by Pd@UiO-66(Zr) for trimethoprim degradation: Efficiency and mechanism

The Fenton reaction is recognized as an effective technique for degrading persistent organic pollutants, such as the emerging pollutant trimethoprim (TMP). Recently, due to the excellent reducibility of active hydrogen ([H]), Pd-H2 has been preferred for Fenton-like reactions and the specific H2 activation of Pd-based catalysts. Herein, a heterogeneous Fenton catalyst named the hydrogen-accelerated oxygen reduction Fenton (MHORF@UiO-66(Zr)) system was prepared through the strategy of building ships in the bottle. The [H] has been used for the acceleration of the reduction of Fe(III) and self-generate H2O2. The systematic characterization demonstrated that the nano Pd0 particle was highly dispersed into the UiO-66(Zr). The results found that 20 mg L-1 of TMP was thoroughly degraded within 90 min in the MHORF@UiO-66(Zr) system under conditions of initial pH 3, 30 mL min-1 H2, 2 g L-1 Pd@UiO-66(Zr) and 25 μM Fe2+. The hydroxyl radical as well as the singlet oxygen were evidenced to be the main reactive oxygen species by scavenging experiments and electron spin resonance. In addition, both reducing Fe(III) and self-generating H2O2 could be achieved due to the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) between the nano Pd0 particles and UiO-66(Zr) confirmed by the correlation results of XPS and calculation of density functional theory. Finally, the working mechanism of the MHORF@UiO-66(Zr) system and the possible degradation pathway of the TMP have been proposed. The novel system exhibited excellent reusability and stability after six cyclic reaction processes.

Design and synthesis of LDH nano composite functionalized with trimesic acid and its environmental application in adsorbing organic dyes indigo carmine and methylene blue

This work designed and prepared an organic-inorganic nanocomposite using layered double hydroxide (LDH) inorganic substrate and trimesic acid (TMA) as chelating agent. Subsequently, the synthesized organic-inorganic nanocomposite was assessed using multiple identification methods, including FTIR, EDX, XRD, TGA, and FESEM, and the outcomes demonstrated that the intended structure was successfully prepared. Also, in order to investigate the efficiency of the Mg-Al LDH-TMA nanocomposite as an efficient nano adsorbent, it was used for removal of indigo carmine (IC) and methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. This synthetic nanocomposite showed a high adsorption capacity. The efficiency of the produced nanocomposite in the adsorption of selected dyes was investigated with the help of batch adsorption studies performed in a variety of experimental settings, including dye concentration, adsorbent dose, pH, adsorption temperature and contact time. Furthermore, the produced Mg-Al LDH-TMA nanocomposite exhibits strong stability and can be recycled and reused five times in a row, which is well consistent with the principles of green chemistry.

NiAlFe LTH /MoS2 p-n junction heterostructure composite as an effective visible-light-driven photocatalyst for enhanced degradation of organic dye under high alkaline conditions

Designing of an effectual heterostructure photocatalyst for catalytic organic pollutant exclusion has been the subject of rigorous research intended to resolve the related environmental aggravation. Fabricating p-n junctions is an effective strategy to promote electron-hole separation of semiconductor photocatalysts as well as enhance the organic toxin degradation performance. In this study, a series of n-type NiAlFe-layered triple hydroxide (LTH) loaded with various ratios of p-type MoS2 was synthesized for forming a heterostructure LTH/MoS2 (LMs) by an in situ hydrothermal strategy. The photocatalysts were characterized by XRD, SEM&EDX, TEM, FT-IR, XPS, as well as UV-vis DRS. The photoactivity of photocatalysts was tested by the degradation of Indigo Carmine (IC) dye. The optimized catalyst (LM1) degrades 100% of indigo dye in high alkaline pH under UV light for 100 min. Besides, the degradation rate of LM1 is 15 times higher than that of pristine NiAlFe-LTH. The enhanced photoactivity is attributed to the synergistic effect between NiAlFe-LTH and MoS2 as well as the p-n junction formation.

Hydrothermal synthesis of Mg/Al-layered double hydroxide modified water hyacinth hydrochar for remediation of wastewater containing mordant brown dye

A high-performance dye adsorbent of Mg/Al-layered double hydroxide modified water hyacinth hydrochar (MgAl@WH) was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The surface functional groups, elemental composition, crystalline structure, and surface morphology of the prepared (MgAl@WH) were determined using different analytical techniques. The characterization results revealed that the (MgAl@WH) hydrochar surface offered more active adsorption sites, facilitating the mordant brown (anionic dye) adsorption, leading to its superior performance with much higher uptake capability (311.0 mg g-1 at 298 K) than Mg/Al double hydroxide nanosheets (MgAl DLHs, 80.2 mg g-1 at 298 K) and dried water hyacinth (WH, 10.0 mg g-1 at 298 K). The adsorption behavior of MgAL@WH follows the pseudo second order kinetic model (R2 = 0.999) and Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.999). Moreover, MgAl@WH bonded efficiently with mordant brown dye via hydrogen bonding and interlayer anion exchange with monolayer formation. Additionally, the recycling tests revealed that the MgAl@WH can be reused over 10 cycles without significant change in the removal efficiency. Based on the obtained findings, Mg/Al-layered double hydroxide modified water hyacinth hydrochar (MgAl@WH), for its economic and environmental benefits, has recently been used as an efficient adsorbent to remediate industrial wastewater containing anionic dyes.

Synthesis and characterization of magnesium ferrite-activated carbon composites derived from orange peels for enhanced supercapacitor performance

Supercapacitors have emerged as highly efficient energy storage devices, relying on electrochemical processes. The performance of these devices can be influenced by several factors, with key considerations including the selection of electrode materials and the type of electrolyte utilized. Transition metal oxide electrodes are commonly used in supercapacitors, as they greatly influence the electrochemical performance of these devices. Nonetheless, ferrites' low energy density poses a limitation. Hence, it is crucial to create electrode materials featuring unique and distinct structures, while also exploring the ideal electrolyte types, to enhance the electrochemical performance of supercapacitors incorporating magnesium ferrites (MF). In this study, we effectively prepared magnesium ferrites (MgFe2O4) supported on activated carbon (AC) derived from orange peels (OP) using a simple hydrothermal method. The resulting blends underwent comprehensive characterization employing various methods, including FTIR, XRD, TEM, SEM, EDX, and mapping analysis. Moreover, the electrochemical performance of MgFe2O4@AC composites was evaluated using GCD and CV techniques. Remarkably, the MF45-AC electrode material showed exceptional electrochemical behavior, demonstrating a specific capacitance of 870 F·g-1 within current density of 1.0 A g-1 and potential windows spanning from 0 to 0.5 V. Additionally, the prepared electrodes displayed exceptional cycling stability, with AC, MF, and MF45-AC retaining 89.6%, 94.2%, and 95.1% of their initial specific capacitance, respectively, even after 5000 cycles. These findings underscore the potential of MF-AC composites as superior electrode materials for supercapacitors. The development of such composites, combined with tailored electrolyte concentrations, holds significant promise for advancing the electrochemical performance and energy density of supercapacitor devices.

Development of a label-free impedimetric aptasensor based on Zr-MOF and titaniom carbide nanosheets for detection of L-tryptophan

This study primarily focuses on the L-Tryptophan (Trp) biomarker assay, with particular attention given to its objectives. The investigation centers on the potential implications of imbalanced Trp levels and its associated metabolites, which have been attributed to the spectrum of both psychological and physiological disorders, encompassing conditions such as cancer. Therefore, the swift and accurate detection of this amino acid is of paramount importance in cancer monitoring, as it plays a crucial role in preventing the metastasis and spread of cancer cells. Thus, an electrochemical aptasensor was designed based on nanocomposite of AgNPs@UiO-66/Ti3C2 (MXene) as immobilization strategy for the ultrasensitive detection of Trp. Zirconium metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) were employed as carriers for silver nanoparticles to facilitate subsequent binding with aptamers. Markedly, the obtained results show that the constructed aptasensor can specifically detect Trp in the two concentration range from 1fM to 1 nM and 1 nM to 200 nM and with a low detection limit of 0.35 fM. When applied to real samples, the experimental results demonstrated positive recovery rates. Consequently, a discerning and sensitive electrochemical aptasensor devoid of labeling agents was successfully fabricated for the explicit purpose of Trp detection.

Advances in metal-organic frameworks for water remediation applications

Rapid industrialization and agricultural development have resulted in the accumulation of a variety of harmful contaminants in water resources. Thus, various approaches such as adsorption, photocatalytic degradation and methods for sensing water contaminants have been developed to solve the problem of water pollution. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of coordination networks comprising organic-inorganic hybrid porous materials having organic ligands attached to inorganic metal ions/clusters via coordination bonds. MOFs represent an emerging class of materials for application in water remediation owing to their versatile structural and chemical characteristics, such as well-ordered porous structures, large specific surface area, structural diversity, and tunable sites. The present review is focused on recent advances in various MOFs for application in water remediation via the adsorption and photocatalytic degradation of water contaminants. The sensing of water pollutants using MOFs via different approaches, such as luminescence, electrochemical, colorimetric, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic techniques, is also discussed. The high porosity and chemical tunability of MOFs are the main driving forces for their widespread applications, which have huge potential for their commercial use.

Fabrication of UiO-66/GCN, a Hybrid Photocatalyst, for Effective Degradation of Ciprofloxacin, Toxicity Estimation, and Its Antibacterial Activity

Fabrication of a metal-organic framework-based photocatalyst has been gaining much interest due to its higher surface area and reasonable band gap, enhancing its photocatalytic activity. This study attempted a facile synthesis of the hybrid photocatalyst UiO-66 doped with graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) by a simple solvothermal method. This composite minimized the drawback related to photogenerated charge transfer and recombination and helped the absorption of visible light. The material was investigated by using various instrumental techniques. In this work, ciprofloxacin (CIP), a fluoroquinolone drug, was chosen as a target micropollutant, and a photodegradation experiment was carried out by using UiO-66, GCN, and UiO-66/GCN under a visible light source, which exhibited 81.85, 69.48, and 93.60% of degradation, respectively. Finally, liquid chromatography mass spectrometry analysis and theoretical computation were carried out to identify the CIP degradation mechanism, and T.E.S.T. software was used to investigate the toxicity of the intermediate products. Apart from photocatalytic activity, the prepared material was also tested for its antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

Green Synthesis of TiO2 Using Impatiens rothii Hook.f. Leaf Extract for Efficient Removal of Methylene Blue Dye

In this work, TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were effectively synthesized by a green method using the Impatiens rothii Hook.f. leaf (IL) extract as a capping and reducing agent. The as-synthesized TiO2 NPs were characterized by different characterization methods such as the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), diffused reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The specific surface area from BET analysis was found to be 65 m2/g. The average crystallite size from XRD analysis and average particle size from SEM analysis were found to be ∼11 and ∼25 nm, respectively. The Raman spectroscopy and XRD results showed that the biosynthesized (IL-TiO2) nanoparticles were purely anatase phase. XPS analysis illustrated the formation of Titania with an oxidation state of +4. The DRS study showcased that a blue-shifted intense absorption peak of IL-TiO2 (3.39 eV) compared to the bulk material reported in the literature (3.2 eV). HRTEM micrograph showed the presence of grain boundary with d spacings of 0.352, 0.245, and 0.190, which correspond to the lattice planes of (101), (004), and (200), respectively. From the EDX analysis, the weight percents of titanium and oxygen were found to be 54.33 and 45.67%, respectively. The photoinduced degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye was investigated in the presence of biosynthesized IL-TiO2 NPs photocatalyst. The effect of parameters like catalyst dosage (30 mg/L), initial concentration of MB (15 ppm), pH (10.5), and contact time (100 min) on the removal efficiency was optimized. The maximum photodegradation efficiency under the optimized conditions was found to be 98%.

Preparation of Fe3O4@UiO-66(Zr)@Ag NPs core-shell-satellite structured SERS substrate for trace detection of organophosphorus pesticides residues

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technology has been revived and developed with the introduction of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), while more valuable properties of MOFs for SERS substrates remain largely unexplored. This work constructed a new SERS substrate Fe₃O₄@UiO-66(Zr)@Ag nanoparticles (FUAs) with excellent SERS detection sensitivity, uniformity, reproducibility and stability, exhibiting a high Raman enhancement factor (5.62 × 10⁶), low limit of detection (LOD, 2.11 × 10^-11 M) and RSD (12.41 %) for 4-NBT, and maintaining 81 % SERS activity within 60 days. The FUAs took full advantage of the strong affinity of UiO-66(Zr) for organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) to realize trace OPs detection. The LODs of phoxim, triazophos and methyl parathion in apple juice were 0.041, 0.021 and 0.0031 mg/L, respectively, with good linearities ranging from 0.02 or 0.1-50 mg/L, meeting the requirements of the food control standards, indicating that the potentials and prospects of the FUAs SERS substrate for trace detecting OPs in foods.

Synthesis of nanoscale zero-valent iron doped carbonized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 for methylene blue removal in water

Nanoscale zero-valent iron-doped carbonized zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (nZVI/CZIF-8) was prepared by carbonation of ferric nitrate and ZIF-8 at 800 °C and used as an adsorbent to remove methylene blue (MB) from water. The synthesized nZVI/CZIF-8 has a specific surface area of 806.9 m2/g, a pore volume of 0.86 cm3/g and an nZVI content of 1.35%, respectively. Both the nZVI/CZIF-8 and CZIF-8 have identical functional groups of O-H, C-H and C=C. With the increase of CZIF-8 size, MB removal rate increased. The doping of nZVI increased the MB removal percentage from 74.5% for ZIF-8 to 96.2% within 80 min for nZVI/CZIF-8. The MB removal percentage increased with the dosage of nZVI/CZIF-8. The MB adsorption with the adsorbents conforms to the Freundlich adsorption isothermal model and the removal rate fitted well to a pseudo-first-order model. The results demonstrate the feasibility of synthesizing high active and stable nZVI/CZIF-8 particles.

Indium Recovery by Adsorption on MgFe2O4 Adsorbents

Indium and its compounds have many industrial applications and are widely used in the manufacture of liquid crystal displays, semiconductors, low temperature soldering, and infrared photodetectors. Indium does not have its own minerals in the Earth's crust, and most commonly, indium is associated with the ores of zinc, lead, copper and tin. Therefore, it must be recovered as a by-product from other metallurgical processes or from secondary raw materials. The aim of this study is to investigate the adsorption properties for recovering indium from aqueous solutions using iron-magnesium composite (MgFe₂O₄). In addition, the results show that the material offers very efficient desorption in 15% HCl solution, being used for 10 adsorption-desorption cycle test. These results provide a simple and effective process for recovering indium. Present study was focuses on the synthesis and characterization of the material by physico-chemical methods such as: X-ray diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy, followed by the adsorption tests. The XRD indicates that the MgFe₂O₄ phase was obtained, and the crystallite size was about 8 nm. New prepared adsorbent materials have a point of zero charge of 9.2. Studies have been performed to determine the influence of pH, initial indium solution concentration, material/solution contact time and temperature on the adsorption capacity of the material. Adsorption mechanism was established by kinetic, thermodynamic and equilibrium studies. At equilibrium a maximum adsorption capacity of 46.4 mg/g has been obtained. From kinetic and thermodynamic studies was proved that the studied adsorption process is homogeneous, spontaneous, endothermic and temperature dependent. Based on Weber and Morris model, we can conclude that the In (III) ions takes place at the MgFe₂O₄/In (III) solution-material interface.

Green-Routed Carbon Dot-Adorned Silver Nanoparticles for the Catalytic Degradation of Organic Dyes

Herein, a simple, cost-effective, and in-situ environmentally friendly approach was adopted to synthesize carbon dot-adorned silver nanoparticles (CDs@AgNPs) from yellow myrobalan (Terminalia chebula) fruit using a hydrothermal treatment without any additional reducing and or stabilizing agents. The as-synthesized CDs@AgNP composite was systematically characterized using multiple analytical techniques: FESEM, TEM, XRD, Raman, ATR-FTIR, XPS, and UV-vis spectroscopy. All the results of the characterization techniques strongly support the idea that the CDs were successfully made to adorn the AgNPs. This effectively synthesized CDs@AgNP composite was applied as a catalyst for the degradation of organic dyes, including methylene blue (MB) and methyl orange (MO). The degradation results revealed that CDs@AgNPs exhibit a superior catalytic activity in the degradation of MB and MO in the presence of NaBH4 (SB) under ambient temperatures. In total, 99.5 and 99.0% rates of degradation of MB and MO were observed using CDs@AgNP composite with SB, respectively. A plausible mechanism for the reductive degradation of MB and MO is discussed in detail. Moreover, the CDs@AgNP composite has great potential for wastewater treatment applications.

Gold-selenide quantum dots supported onto cesium ferrite nanocomposites for the efficient degradation of rhodamine B

In this work, different weight percentage of gold-selenide quantum dots (AuSe QDs) (1.0, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.0 wt.%) were successfully synthesized and decorated on cesium ferrite nanocomposite (Cs2Fe2O4 NC). The as-prepared pure AuSe QDs, pure Cs2Fe2O4 NC, and x wt.% AuSe QDs/Cs2Fe2O4 NC photocatalysts were investigated using different characterization techniques such as nitrogen adsorption desorption isotherms (BET), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The results show that AuSe QDs were uniformly distributed on Cs2Fe2O4NCs surface as spherical dots with an average size of 1.0-8.0 nm. While the Cs2Fe2O4 NCs possess an average size between 10 to 35 nm. The photocatalytic performance of x wt. % AuSe QDs/Cs2Fe2O4NCs were measured through the photodegradation of rhodamine B (RhB) dye as a model water pollutant, under a150 W-Mercury lamp with a filter (JB400) as a simulated source of visible light. The results revealed that the % degradation of RhB increased from 50.0 %, 59.1 %, 76.4 %, and to 99.15 % within 150 min for the pure Cs2Fe2O4, 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0 wt.% AuSe QDs/Cs2Fe2O4 NC photocatalysts, respectively. The 5.0 wt.% AuSe/Cs2Fe2O4 NC sample showed highest photocatalytic activity. The effect of recycling also studied. High photocatalytic performance and superior stability confirmed that the prepared nanocomposites act as good photocatalysts.

Fine-tuning the dye adsorption capacity of UiO-66 by a mixed-ligand approach

The mixed ligand synthetic approach offers an alternative to engineering a specific character in metal-organic framework (MOFs) materials. Herein, we synthesized and characterized a well-known prototype zirconium-based-MOF, so-called UiO-66, and its mixed ligand derivatives UiO-66-xATA, where x is mole fraction (0.5, 0.75, and 1.0) and ATA is 2-animoterephthalate. The study investigates whether the dye adsorption capacity can be tuned/enhanced by the ATA ligand substitution into the framework. We found that, at room temperature, UiO-66-0.75ATA shows the highest adsorption capacity toward various dye solutions, including methylene blue (MB), indigo carmine (IC), and congo red (CR). The optimum adsorption conditions in all four materials were in a common trend where their adsorption capacities can be increased with decreasing pH and adsorbent dose, increasing IC concentration, contact time, and temperature. Pseudo-second order kinetics model fits best with their adsorption data, where UiO-66-ATA has the fastest adsorption rate. Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms were found best to describe adsorption behavior in ATA-containing UiO-66 and UiO-66, respectively, where adsorption processes were found to be physisorption. Confirming by thermodynamic studies, the adsorption in all four materials occurred spontaneously, driven by entropy. Computational studies showed ligand to metal charge transfer where the distribution of electron densities was varied with the amount of functionalized ligand. Adsorption mechanism is proposed as a synergistic interplay between electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding. The findings in this work broaden the potential strategy to fine-tune the dye adsorption capacity in MOF materials.

Role of NiO Nanoparticles in Enhancing Structure Properties of TiO2 and Its Applications in Photodegradation and Hydrogen Evolution

Pure and modified mesoporous TiO2 nanoparticles with different loadings of NiO (3-20.0 wt %) were prepared through the surfactant-assisted sol-gel approach with the use of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a template. The optical and structural properties of different samples were examined using N2 adsorption-desorption analysis, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction results confirmed the insertion of Ni2+ into the lattice of TiO2, and the crystallite size reduced remarkably after the addition of NiO. The diffuse reflectance spectroscopy spectra displayed obvious red shift in the absorption edges, and new absorption bands appeared in the visible region when NiO was added, which indicates the formation of surface defects and oxygen vacancies. The optical band gap of TiO2 reduced sharply when the contents of NiO were increased. The increase in the surface defects as well as oxygen vacancies were examined using PL spectroscopy. The photocatalytic performance of the as-synthesized samples was investigated over photodegradation of brilliant green (BG) and phenol and hydrogen generation under visible light. 10% NiO/TiO2 exhibited the highest photocatalytic efficiency. The photocatalytic activity was improved due to the creation of a p-n junction at the interface of NiO/TiO2, which efficiently promotes the separation of photogenerated electron/hole pairs and consequently enhances its photodegradation activity. According to the photocatalytic activity results, NiO contents were considered one of the most important factors affecting the photodegradation of BG and phenol and H2 evolution. Also, we discussed the mechanism of photodegradation, mineralization (total organic carbon), and photocatalytic reaction kinetics of BG and phenol.

Facile and Green Synthesis of Silver Quantum Dots Immobilized onto a Polymeric CTS-PEO Blend for the Photocatalytic Degradation of p-Nitrophenol

Immobilization of inorganic metal quantum dots (especially, noble transition metals) onto organic polymers to synthesize nanometal-polymer composites (NMPCs) has attracted considerable attention because of their advanced optical, electrical, catalytic/photocatalytic, and biological properties. Herein, novel, highly efficient, stable, and visible light-active NMPC photocatalysts consisting of silver quantum dots (Ag QDs) immobilized onto polymeric chitosan-polyethylene oxide (CTS-PEO) blend sheets have been successfully prepared by an in situ self-assembly facile casting method as a facile and green approach. The CTS-PEO blend polymer acts as a reducing and a stabilizing agent for Ag QDs which does not generate any environmental chemical pollutant. The prepared x wt % Ag QDs/CTS-PEO composites were fully characterized through X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), thermogravimetric analysis, and UV/visible spectroscopy. The characterization results indicated the successful synthesis of the Ag QDs/CTS-PEO composites by the interactions and complexation between x wt % Ag QDs and CTS-PEO blend sheets. TEM images revealed small granules randomly distributed onto the CTS-PEO blend sheets, indicating the immobilization of Ag QDs onto CTS-PEO composites. The presence of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) band and the shifting of the absorption edge toward higher wavelengths in the UV/vis spectra indicated the formation of x wt % Ag QDs/CTS-PEO composites. The Ag QDs in the polymeric blend matrix led to remarkable enhancement in the optical, thermal, electrical, and photocatalytic properties of x wt % Ag QDs/CTS-PEO composites. The photocatalytic efficiency of the prepared composites was evaluated by the photodegradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) under simulated sunlight. The maximum photocatalytic degradation reached 91.1% efficiency within 3 h for the 12.0 wt % Ag QDs/CTS-PEO photocatalyst. Generally, the Ag QDs immobilized onto CTS-PEO blend composites significantly enhance the SPR effect and the synergistic effect and reduce the band gap, leading to a high photocatalytic activity.
