Abstract
This study aimed to fabricate a series of biodegradable hydrogel films by gelating/physically crosslinking a blend of xanthan gum (XG) and chitosan (CS) in various combinations using a facile, green, and low cost solution casting technique. The adsorption of Cd2+, Cu2+ and Ni2+ by the XG/CS biofilm in aqueous solution was studied in batch experiments to determine how the pH of the solution, contact time, dosage of adsorbent, initial metal ion concentration and ionic strength affect its adsorption. A highly pH-dependent adsorption process was observed for three metal ions. A maximum amount of Cd2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ ions was adsorbable with 50 mg of the adsorbent at pH 6.0 for an initial metal concentration of 50 mg.L-1. An empirical pseudo-second-order model seems to fit the kinetic experimental data reasonably well. It was found that the Langmuir model correlated better with equilibrium isotherm when compared with the Freundlich model. For Cd2+, Ni2+, and Cu2+ ions at 25 °C, the maximum monolayer adsorption capacity was 152.33, 144.79, and 139.71 mg.g-1, respectively. Furthermore, the biofilm was capable of regenerating, allowing metal ions to adsorb and desorb for five consecutive cycles. Therefore, the developed biodegradable film offers the potential for remediation of specified metal ions.

Abstract
This paper presents the formation of a self-healing hydrogel prepared by carboxyethyl modification of chitosan and crosslinking with oxidized sodium alginate. Concurrently, the incorporation of Ca2+ facilitated the formation of "calcium bridges" through intricate coordination with carboxyl moieties, bolstering the attributes of the hydrogel. Various characterization methods, including scanning electron microscopy, texture analysis, and rheological measurements, demonstrated that the introduction of carboxyethyl groups resulted in a more compact hydrogel network structure and improved the hardness and elasticity. The addition of Ca2+ helped to further enhance the mechanical performance of the hydrogel and increase its thermal stability. Then, the adsorption capacity was also investigated, showing adsorption capacities of 46.17 mg/g methylene blue and 46.44 mg/g congo red for carboxyethyl chitosan/oxidized sodium alginate hydrogel, a four-fold increase for congo red versus chitosan/oxidized sodium alginate hydrogel. In addition, the adsorption behavior of CEC/OSA/2%Ca2+ hydrogel can be well described by pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isothermal model. Compared to traditional hydrogels, CEC/OSA/2%Ca2+ hydrogel shows superior mechanical strength, enhanced thermal stability, and improved adsorption capacity, which can effectively adsorb not only methylene blue but also congo red. These advancements demonstrate our hydrogel's innovative properties.

Abstract
Direct discharge of electroplating wastewater containing hazardous metal ions such as Cu2+ and Ag + results in environmental pollution. In this study, we rationally prepare a magnetic composite hydrogel consisted of Fe3O4, UiO-66-NH2, chitosan (CTS) and polyethyleneimine (PEI), namely Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2/CTS-PEI. Thanks to the strong attraction between the amino group and metal cations, the Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2/CTS-PEI hydrogel shows the maximum adsorption capacities of 321.67 mg g-1 for Cu2+ ions and 226.88 mg g-1 for Ag + ions within 120 min. As real scenario, the Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2/CTS-PEI hydrogel exhibits excellent removal efficiencies for metallic ions even in the complicated media of actual electroplating wastewater. In addition, we explore the competitive adsorption order of metal cations by using experimental characterization and theoretical calculations. The optimal configuration of CTS-PEI is also discovered with the density functional theory, and the water retention within hydrogel is simulated through molecular dynamics modeling. We find that the Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2/CTS-PEI hydrogel could be reused and after 5 cycles of adsorption-desorption, removal efficiency could maintain 80%. Finally, the Ag+ accumulated by hydrogel are reduced to generate a photocatalyst for efficient degradation of Rhodamine B. The novel magnetic hydrogel paves a promising path for efficient removal of heavy metal ions in wastewater and further resource utilization as photocatalysts.

Abstract
Herein, Typha angustifolia was used as a charcoal source and chemically modified with a strong oxidizing agent, potassium permanganate (KMnO4), to obtain modified Typha angustifolia (MTC). Then, the green, stable and efficient CMC/GG/MTC composite hydrogel was successfully prepared by compounding MTC with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and guar gum (GG) by free radical polymerization. Various variables that influence adsorption performance were explored, and optimal adsorption conditions were determined. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir isotherm model was 805.45, 772.52, and 598.28 mg g-1 for Cu2+, Co2+, and methylene blue (MB), respectively. The XPS results revealed that the main mechanism of removing pollutants by adsorbent is surface complexation and electrostatic attraction. After five adsorption-desorption cycles, the CMC/GG/MTC adsorbent still exhibited good adsorption and regeneration capacity. This study provides a low-cost, effective and simple method for preparation of hydrogels from modified biochar, which has excellent application potential in the removal of heavy metal ions and organic cationic dye contaminants from wastewater.

Abstract
A novel pyridine-modified chitosan (PYCS) adsorbent was prepared in a multistep procedure including the successive grafting of 2-(chloromethyl) pyridine hydrochloride and crosslinking with glutaraldehyde. Then, the as-prepared materials were used as adsorbents for the removal of metal ions from acidic wastewater. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to study the impact of various factors such as solution pH value, contact time, temperature, and Fe (III) concentration. The results showed that the absorbent exhibited a high capacity of Fe (III) and the maximum adsorption capacity was up to 66.20 mg/g under optimal experimental conditions (the adsorption time = 12 h, pH = 2.5, and T = 303 K). Adsorption kinetics and isotherm data were accurately described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Sips model, respectively. Thermodynamic studies confirmed that the adsorption was a spontaneous endothermic process. Moreover, the adsorption mechanism was investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results revealed the pyridine group forms a stable chelate with iron (III) ions. Therefore, this acid-resistant adsorbent exhibited excellent adsorption performance for heavy metal ions from acidic wastewater compared to the conventional adsorbents, helping realize direct decontamination and secondary utilization.

Abstract
The pollution and scarcity of freshwater resources are global problems that have a significant influence on human life. It is very important to remove harmful substances in the water to realize the recycling of water resources. Hydrogels have recently attracted attention due to their special three-dimensional network structure, large surface area, and pores, which show great potential for the removal of pollutants in water. In their preparation, natural polymers are one of the preferred materials because of their wide availability, low cost, and easy thermal degradation. However, when it is directly used for adsorption, its performance is unsatisfactory, so it usually needs to be modified in the preparation process. This paper reviews the modification and adsorption properties of polysaccharide-based natural polymer hydrogels, such as cellulose, chitosan, starch, and sodium alginate, and discusses the effects of their types and structures on performance and recent technological advances.

Abstract
In this study, a hazelnut shell (HS) filled semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPN) biocomposite adsorbent with novel and different compositions was developed that will enable the removal of lead ions, which are commonly found in water, by adsorption reactions. The structural and morphological properties of the produced adsorbents were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, TGA, DSC, BET, FE-SEM, EDX, and zeta potential measurements, and the production mechanism of these adsorbents was discussed. The effects of parameters such as different adsorbent dosages, different heavy metal concentrations, type of adsorbent, contact time, pH, and temperature on the swelling abilities and adsorption properties of adsorbents were investigated in detail. It has been determined that the adsorbent, which exhibits optimum adsorption and swelling properties, is a biocomposite containing 5% by weight HS filler, and it has been observed that it can remove up to 85% of lead ions under different parameters and conditions. In addition, the adsorption behaviors of the produced biocomposites are discussed using isothermal, kinetic, and thermodynamic models. Moreover, studies have been carried out on the reusability of the adsorbent, and it has been observed that the adsorbent produced within the scope of the study is still usable even after four cycles.

Abstract
Interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) architectures have gained a lot of interest in recent decades, mainly due to their wide range of applications including water treatment and environmental remediation. IPNs are composed of two or more crosslinked polymeric matrices that are physically entangled but not chemically connected. In polymer science, the interpenetrating network structure with its high polymer chain entanglement is commonly used to generate materials with many functional properties, such as mechanical robustness and adaptable structure. In order to remove a targeted pollutant from contaminated water, it is feasible to modify the network architectures to increase the selectivity by choosing the monomer appropriately. This review aims to give a critical overview of the recent design concepts of IPNs and their applications in desalination and water treatment and their future prospects. This article also discusses the inclusion of inorganic nanoparticles into traditional polymeric membrane networks and its advantages. In the first part, the current scenario for desalination, water pollution and conventional desalination technologies along with their challenges is discussed. Subsequently, the main strategies for the synthesis of semi-IPNs and full-IPNs, and their relevant properties in water remediation are presented based on the nature of the networks and mechanism, with an emphasis on the IPN membrane. This review article has thoroughly investigated and critically assessed published works that describe the latest study on developing IPN membranes, hydrogels and composite materials in water purification and desalination. The goal of this critical analysis is to elicit fresh perspectives regarding the application and advantages of IPNs in desalination and water treatment. This article will also provide a glimpse into future areas of research to address the challenges relating to advanced water treatment as well as its emerging sustainable approaches. The study has put forward a convincing justification and establishes the relevance of IPNs being one of the most intriguing and important areas for achieving a sustainable generation of advanced materials that could benefit mankind.

Removal of pollutants from the surrounding environment is a hot research area worldwide; diverse technologies and materials are being continuously developed. To this end, bio-based composite hydrogels as sorbents have received extensive attention in recent years because of advantages such as high adsorptive capacity, controllable mechanical properties, cost effectiveness, and potential for upscaling in continuous flow installations. In this review, we aim to provide an up-to-date analysis of the literature on recent accomplishments in the design of polysaccharide-based composite hydrogels for removal of heavy metal ions, dyes, and oxyanions from wastewater. The correlation between the constituent polysaccharides (chitosan, cellulose, alginate, starch, pectin, pullulan, xanthan, salecan, etc.), engineered composition (presence of other organic and/or inorganic components), and sorption conditions on the removal performance of addressed pollutants will be carefully scrutinized. Particular attention will be paid to the sustainability aspects in the selected studies, particularly to composite selectivity and reusability, as well as to their use in fixed-bed columns and real wastewater applications.

Abstract
Herein, we represent a novel ecofriendly bilayer-amine group incorporated microcrystalline cellulose (MCC)/chitosan (CS) hydrogel, fabricated via integrating polydopamine (PDA) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) for reliable and effective extraction of copper (Cu2+), zinc (Zn2+), and nickel (Ni2+) ions from effluents. Owing to abundant adsorptive sites, the MCC-PDA-PEI/CS-PDA-PEI hydrogel showed excellent Cu2+, Zn2+, and Ni2+ adsorbabilities of ~434.8, ~277.7, and ~261.8 mg/g, respectively, in a single-ion adsorption system with the adsorption kinetics and isotherm complied with pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models, respectively. In a multi-ion adsorption system, hydrogel removes mixed metal cations with slightly higher selectivity for Cu2+. In accordance with X-ray photoelectron and Fourier-transform-infrared spectrometric analyses, a plausible binding mechanism of metal cations on the as-prepared hydrogel was proposed by chelation between hydrogel functional groups and metal ions. In the repetitive adsorption/desorption experiments, the hydrogel retained >40% metal ion adsorption and desorption capacities after four cycles. Furthermore, the Cu2+-adsorbing hydrogel could serve as a support for the in situ development of Cu nanoparticles, which showed excellent catalytic performance as demonstrated by the transformation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) to 4-aminophenol. This work provides a novel ecofriendly, reusable, and highly-efficient adsorbent, as well as a biocatalyst for remediation of heavy metal cations and 4-NP polluted effluents.

In situ growth of ZIF-8 on carboxymethyl chitosan beads for improved adsorption of lead ion from aqueous solutions. Int J Biol Macromol 2022; 205:473-482. Abstract
In this study, a method for the in situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) on carboxymethyl chitosan beads (BCMC) to produce a composite adsorbent (BCMC@ZIF-8) for the removal of Pb2+ from water is proposed. The results revealed that the utilization of the BCMC as a framework enhanced the stability of ZIF-8, and the presence of the latter in the composite improved the removal efficiency of Pb2+ from water. Data from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis and adsorption kinetics revealed that the adsorption mechanism included diffusion and the sharing/transfer of electrons between BCMC@ZIF-8 and Pb2+. The maximum adsorption capacity of BCMC@ZIF-8 fitted using the Langmuir model was 566.09 mg/g. Results of the experiments on the regeneration of the adsorbent and its stability in water further indicated that BCMC improved the stability of ZIF-8. This study demonstrated that the stability of metal-organic framework (MOF) materials, which exhibited high efficiencies for the removal of heavy metals in water can be improved through fixation of the polymer skeleton. Thus, the present study offers practical and theoretical guidance for the application of MOF materials in water treatment.
