A facile strategy for fabricating robust superhydrophobic and superoleophilic metal mesh via diazonium chemistry

Scalable multifunctional MOFs-textiles via diazonium chemistry

Cellulose fiber-based textiles are ubiquitous in daily life for their processability, biodegradability, and outstanding flexibility. Integrating cellulose textiles with functional coating materials can unlock their potential functionalities to engage diverse applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal candidate materials for such integration, thanks to their unique merits, such as large specific surface area, tunable pore size, and species diversity. However, achieving scalable fabrication of MOFs-textiles with high mechanical durability remains challenging. Here, we report a facile and scalable strategy for direct MOF growth on cotton fibers grafted via the diazonium chemistry. The as-prepared ZIF-67-Cotton textile (ZIF-67-CT) exhibits excellent ultraviolet (UV) resistance and organic contamination degradation via the peroxymonosulfate activation. The ZIF-67-CT is also used to encapsulate essential oils such as carvacrol to enable antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. Additionally, by directly tethering a hydrophobic molecular layer onto the MOF-coated surface, superhydrophobic ZIF-67-CT is achieved with excellent self-cleaning, antifouling, and oil-water separation performances. More importantly, the reported strategy is generic and applicable to other MOFs and cellulose fiber-based materials, and various large-scale multi-functional MOFs-textiles can be successfully manufactured, resulting in vast applications in wastewater purification, fragrance industry, and outdoor gears.

Stable and Durable Superhydrophobic Cotton Fabrics Prepared via a Simple 1,4-Conjugate Addition Reaction for Ultrahigh Efficient Oil-Water Separation

Superhydrophobic materials used for oil-water separation have received wide attention. However, the simple and low-cost strategy for making durable superhydrophobic materials remains a major challenge. Here, this work reports that stable and durable superhydrophobic cotton fabrics can be prepared using a simple two-step impregnation process. Silica nanoparticles are surface modified by hydrolysis condensation of 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMS). 1,4-conjugate addition reaction between the acrylic group of cross-linking agent pentaerythritol triacrylate (PETA) and the amino group of octadecylamine (ODA) forms a covalent cross-linked rough network structure. The long hydrophobic chain of ODA makes the cotton fabric exhibit excellent superhydrophobic properties, and the water contact angle (WCA) of the fabric surface reaches 158°. The modified cotton fabric has good physical and chemical stability, self-cleaning, and anti-fouling. At the same time, the modified fabric shows excellent oil/water separation efficiency (98.16% after 20 cycles) and ultrahigh separation flux (15413.63 L m-2 h-1) due to its superhydrophobicity, superoleophilicity, and inherent porous structure. The method provides a broad prospect in the future diversification applications of oil/water separation and oil spill cleaning.

Modified silica-based double-layered hydrophobic-coated stainless steel mesh and its application for oil/seawater separation

A double-layered hydrophobic-coated stainless steel mesh (CSSM) was successfully prepared by vapor deposition of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to form aerosol silica (SiO2) particles on SSM followed by coating with the in situ modified SiO2 generated in the natural rubber (NR) latex for use in oil/seawater separation. The in situ SiO2 particles were modified with octyltriethoxysilane (OTES) or hexadecyltrimethoxysilane (HDTMS). Transmission electron microscopy, 29Si solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to determine the structure of the in situ modified SiO2 generated in the NR latex. Scanning electron microscopy and water contact angle analyses were applied to characterize the morphology and hydrophobicity of the CSSM, respectively. The presence of aerosol SiO2 particles from PDMS and in situ modified SiO2 by OTES (MSi-O) or HDTMS (MSi-H) generated in the NR could enhance the surface roughness and hydrophobicity of the CSSM. The hydrophobic CSSM was then applied for the separation of chloroform/seawater and crude oil/seawater mixtures. A high separation efficiency (up to 99.3%) with the PDMS/NR/MSi-H CSSM was obtained and the mesh was reusable for up to 20 cycles.

Robust Photothermal Icephobic Surface with Mechanical Durability of Multi-Bioinspired Structures

Photothermal superhydrophobic surfaces are potential to become ideal anti-/deicing surfaces due to their rapid water removal, icing delay, and photothermal deicing performance. Here, a robust photothermal icephobic surface with mechanical durability is shown that is integrated with a microspine array inspired by honeycomb and cactus thorn (i.e., MAHC), which is developed by a laser-layered microfabrication strategy. The maximum stress on the microspine of the MAHC is reduced by ≈2/3, due to the protection of the bionic honeycomb structure. Even after 200 linear abrasions by a steel blade, the MAHC remains superior water repellency with a water contact angle of 150.7° and roll-off angles of 10.3°, stable icing delay time (578.2 s), and rapidly photothermal deicing capabilities (401 s). As the MAHC is fabricated on a curvature surface such as a copper alloy transmission line for an overhead high-speed rail, a stable photothermal anti-/deicing in a low-temperature environment still can be achieved effectively. The freezing rain covering the functional transmission line completely slides off within 758 s under one sun illumination. This studying offers insight into the design of novel materials with stable anti-icing/icephobic structures, which would be extended into some applied realms, for example, transportation fields or power systems in cold or low-temperature climates.

Stimuli-Responsive Track-Etched Membranes for Separation of Water-Oil Emulsions

In this work, we have developed a method for the preparation of pH-responsive track-etched membranes (TeMs) based on poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) with pore diameters of 2.0 ± 0.1 μm of cylindrical shape by RAFT block copolymerization of styrene (ST) and 4-vinylpyridine (4-VP) to be used in the separation of water-oil emulsions. The influence of the monomer concentration (1-4 vol%), the molar ratio of RAFT agent: initiator (1:2-1:100) and the grafting time (30-120 min) on the contact angle (CA) was studied. The optimal conditions for ST and 4-VP grafting were found. The obtained membranes showed pH-responsive properties: at pH 7-9, the membrane was hydrophobic with a CA of 95°; at pH 2, the CA decreased to 52°, which was due to the protonated grafted layer of poly-4-vinylpyridine (P4VP), which had an isoelectric point of pI = 3.2. The obtained membranes with controlled hydrophobic-hydrophilic properties were tested by separating the direct and reverse "oil-water" emulsions. The stability of the hydrophobic membrane was studied for 8 cycles. The degree of purification was in the range of 95-100%.

In Situ Growth of a Stable Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) on Flexible Fabric via a Layer-by-Layer Strategy for Versatile Applications

Fabrics have been used broadly in daily life for an enormous variety of applications due to their intrinsic advantages, such as flexibility, renewability, and good processability. Integrating natural fabrics with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an effective strategy to improve the added value of textiles with special functionalities. Here, a facile, low-cost, and scalable technology is reported for the in situ growth of MOFs on cotton fabrics. A uniform and dense coating of regular octahedral Cu-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (CuBTC) crystals was formed on the fiber surface, followed by treatment with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane and triethoxyoctylsilane to create a superhydrophobic CuBTC@cotton fabric (SMCF), which greatly improved its water stability and extended superhydrophobic CuBTC's potential applications. The as-prepared MCF has a specific surface area of 229 m²/g, which is 11 times that of pristine fabrics (21 m²/g). This high porosity further endows the fabric with enhanced loading capacity of essential oils to enable excellent antibacterial ability. Moreover, the SMCF also exhibits excellent self-cleaning, UV shielding, and anti-icing performances. In addition, we performed COMSOL simulations to investigate the dynamic freezing process of water on the surface of samples, which agrees well with our experimental observations. By combining the merits of both fabrics and MOFs, the MCF is expected to extend the applications of traditional textiles in antifouling, safety, the fragrance industry, and healthcare for the next-generation multifunctional fabrics.
