Effects of low-molecular-weight organic acids on the transport of polystyrene nanoplastics: An insight at the structure of organic acids

Plastic nanoparticles are extensively used in various products, leading to inevitable pollution in soil. Understanding their transport in soils where various organic substances exist is crucial. This study examined the impact of low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) on the transport of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) through saturated quartz sand. The experiments involved three dibasic acids-malonic acid (MA1), malic acid (MA2) and tartaric acid (TA) - and four monobasic acids- formic acid (FA), acetic acid (AA), propanoic acid (PA) and glycolic acid (GA) -under different pH levels (4.0, 5.5, 7.0) and in the presence of cations (Na+, Ca2+). The results demonstrated that in the presence of Na+, dibasic acids significantly enhanced PS-NPs transport, with TA being the most effective, followed by MA2 and MA1. This enhancement is attributed to the adsorption of LMWOAs onto the nanoparticles and sand, creating a more negative ζ-potential, which increases the electrostatic repulsion and decreases the PS-NPs deposition, thereby facilitating the transport. Applying the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek theory, higher pH levels increased the energy barrier and secondary energy minimum, decreasing PS-NPs deposition. Moreover, dibasic acids significantly enhanced the hydrophilicity of PS-NPs. Conversely, monobasic acids, except for GA, slightly reduced the hydrophilicity of PS-NPs, as indicated by a small increase in the water contact angle, hereby minimally affecting PS-NPs transport. As for GA, although it is a monobasic acid, the additional -OH group in its molecular structure promoted PS-NPs transport, similar to dibasic acids. For example, GA also significantly enhanced the hydrophilicity of PS-NPs. In the presence of Ca2+, the enhancement of PS-NPs transport by LMWOAs was comparable to that with Na+, primarily due to the complex-forming and bridging effects of Ca2+ with the organic acids and PS-NPs. These findings provide important insights into predicting and analyzing the transport behaviors of PS-NPs.

Effects of surfactants on the adsorption of norfloxacin onto ferrihydrite: comparison between anionic and cationic surfactants

There is little information on how widespread surfactants affect the adsorption of norfloxacin (NOR) onto iron oxide minerals. In order to elucidate the effects of various surfactants on the adsorption characteristics of NOR onto typical iron oxides, we have explored the different influences of sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), an anionic surfactant, and didodecyldimethylammonium bromide (DDAB), a cationic surfactant, on the interactions between NOR and ferrihydrite under different solution chemistry conditions. Interestingly, SDBS facilitated NOR adsorption, whereas DDAB inhibited NOR adsorption. The adsorption-enhancement effect of SDBS was ascribed to the enhanced electrostatic attraction, the interactions between the adsorbed SDBS on ferrihydrite surfaces and NOR molecules, and the bridging effect of SDBS between NOR and iron oxide. In comparison, the adsorption-inhibition effect of DDAB owning to the adsorption site competitive adsorption between NOR and DDAB for the effective sites as well as the steric hindrance between NOR-DDAB complexes and the adsorbed DDAB on ferrihydrite surfaces. Additionally, the magnitude of the effects of surfactants on NOR adsorption declined with increasing pH values from 5.0 to 9.0, which was related to the amounts of surfactant binding to ferrihydrite surfaces. Moreover, when the background electrolyte was Ca2+, the enhanced effect of SDBS on NOR adsorption was caused by the formation of NOR-Ca2+-SDBS complexes. The inhibitory effect of DDAB was due to the DDAB coating on ferrihydrite, which undermined the cation-bridging effect. Together, the findings from this work emphasize the essential roles of widely existing surfactants in controlling the environmental fate of quinolone antibiotics.

Effects of root-derived organic acids on sorption of pharmaceutically active compounds in sandy topsoil

The presence and fate of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) in agricultural fields are rarely investigated. The present study highlights that root-derived low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) affect the mobility of PhACs in cultivated humic Arenosol. Sorption experiments are conducted using three PhACs characterised by different physicochemical properties: carbamazepine (CBZ), 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2), and diclofenac-sodium (DFC). The results suggest that the adsorption of EE2 is more intense than the other two PhACs, whereas DFC and CBZ are primarily dominated by desorption. LMWOAs mainly provide additional low-energy adsorption sites for the PhACs, and slight pH changes do not significantly affect the sorption mechanism. During competitive adsorption, the high-energy sites of the adsorbents are initially occupied by EE2 owing to its high adsorption energy (∼15 kJ/mol). The new low-energy binding sites enhance the adsorption of DFC (from 8.5 % to 72.0 %) and CBZ (from 31.0 % to 70.0 %) during multicomponent adsorption. LMWOAs not only affect adsorption by modifying the pH but also provide additional binding sites that allow the PhACs to remain in the root environment for a longer period. As the concentration of LMWOAs temporarily changes, so does the availability of PhACs in the root zone. Environmental changes in the humic horizon enhance the mobility of the adsorbed PhACs, which renders them continuously available for uptake by plants, thus increasing the possibility of PhACs entering the human food chain.

Low-molecular-weight organic acids-mediated transport of neonicotinoid pesticides through saturated soil porous media: Combined effects of the molecular structures of organic acids and the chemical properties of contaminants

Empirical information about the transport properties of neonicotinoid pesticides through the soil as affected by the ubiquitous low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) is lacking. Herein, the impacts of three LMWOAs with different molecular structures, including citric acid, acetic acid, and malic acid, on the mobility characteristics of two typical neonicotinoid pesticides (Dinotefuran (DTF) and Nitenpyram (NTP)) were explored. Interestingly, under acidic conditions, different mechanisms were involved in transporting DTF and NTP by adding exogenous LMWOAs. Concretely, acetic acid and malic acid inhibited DTF transport, ascribed to the enhanced electrostatic attraction between DTF and porous media and the additional binding sites provided by the deposited LMWOAs. However, citric acid slightly enhanced DTF mobility due to the fact that the inhibitory effect was weakened by the steric hindrance effect induced by the deposited citric acid with a large molecular size. In comparison, all three LMWOAs promoted NTP transport at pH 5.0. Because the interaction between NTP with soil organic matter (e.g., via π-π stacking interaction) was masked by the LMWOAs coating on soil surfaces. Nevertheless, LMWOAs could promote the mobility of both neonicotinoid pesticides at pH 7.0 due to the steric hindrance effect caused by the deposited organic acids and the competitive retention between LMWOAs and pesticides for effective surface deposition sites of soil particles. Furthermore, the extent of the promotion effects of LMWOAs generally followed the order of citric acid > malic acid > acetic acid. This pattern was highly related to their molecular structures (e.g., number and type of functional groups and molecular size). Additionally, when the background solutions contained Ca2+, the bridging effect of cations also contributed to the transport-enhancement effects of LMWOAs. The findings provide valuable information about the mobility behaviors of neonicotinoid pesticides co-existing with LMWOAs in soil-water systems.

Migration of nanocolloid-carrying antibiotics in paddy red soil during the organic fertilization process

Soil nanocolloids are highly mobile and can act as carriers for the transport of antibiotics to a wider and deeper range of soils; however, the inherent behavior and mechanism of nanocolloid-carrying antibiotics in soil remain unclear. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation of the migration of antibiotics in paddy red soil during the organic fertilization process using four common soil nanocolloids: kaolin (KL), montmorillonite (MT), hematite (HT), and humic acid (HA). The results showed that nanocolloid carriers promoted the intra-medium (from soil surface to the bottom) and inter-medium transfer (from organic fertilizers to soil) of antibiotics. The migration mechanisms of antibiotics carried by the nanocolloids differed: the phenolic hydroxyl and carboxyl groups of HA esterified with the carboxyl groups of quinolones and phenolic hydroxyl groups of tetracyclines, respectively, while the oxygen atoms of HT formed stabilizing complexes with the soil, which could further adsorb antibiotics using their functional group-rich complexes. Smaller antibiotic compounds were adsorbed in the metal oxide interlayer of MT via cation exchange, whereas KL adsorbed antibiotics on its metal oxide surface layer in the same way but were susceptible to desorption. Additionally, nanocolloids changed the adsorption capacity of soil for antibiotics and influenced the enrichment of dominant/functional bacteria (e.g., Burkholderiaceae) and thus varied the vertical distribution of antibiotics in soil. These findings enhance our understanding of the migration behavior and mechanism of nanocolloid-carrying antibiotics in red paddy soil and provide a theoretical foundation for preventing and controlling antibiotic pollution in arable systems.

Promotion of phosphate release from humic acid-iron hydroxide coprecipitates in the presence of citric acid

Phosphate (P) resources are expected to be depleted within a century. Therefore, promoting balanced phosphorus fertilizer use and understanding phosphorus dynamics in soils containing iron (III), organic acids, and iron (III)-organic molecule particulates is crucial. This study investigated the sorption of citric acid onto humic acid-iron hydr(o)xide coprecipitate (HAFHCP) and the reciprocal effects of citric acid and P sorption on HAFHCP with different C/Fe ratios. The results showed that the maximum sorption capacity (MSC) of citric acid on HAFHCP decreased with increasing C/Fe ratios in the HAFHCP. The P sorption on HAFHCP pre-sorbed with citric acids (denoted as C-P) decreased by 50% compared with that of the MSC on FH. However, citric acids could only reduce P sorption by 20% when P was pre-sorbed on HAFHCP (denoted as P-C). The results suggested that upon the formation of HAFHCP, citric acids might increase P availability, especially in the C-P system. Although citric acids initially inhibited P sorption on HAFHCP in the P-C system, P sorption increased with prolonged reaction time. The exposures of new sorption sites upon dissolution of Fe from HAFHCP by citric acids or/and the formations of Fe bridge between P and organic domains of HAFHCP might contribute to these results. Additionally, a number of large HAFHCP aggregates became smaller while sorbing P due to the increasing electric repulsion on the surfaces of FH, enabling the subsequent dissolutions of more Fe by citric acids from HAFHCP in the P-C system. By integrating these innovative and sustainable strategies, the recycling and reuse of P can be optimized, thereby minimizing the reliance on synthetic fertilizers and mitigating environmental impacts. This approach fosters the efficient utilization of phosphorus resources, improves soil fertility, and enhances the overall resilience of agricultural systems and ecosystems.

Influencing mechanisms of tartaric acid on adsorption and degradation of tetracycline on goethite: insight from solid and liquid aspects

The interactions between organic pollutants and iron minerals play an important role in their environmental fate. In this study, the effects of low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) on the adsorption and degradation of tetracycline (TC) on goethite were investigated. Tartaric acid (TA) was taken as the representative of LMWOAs to study the influencing mechanism through batch experiments and microscale characterization. In addition, the properties of TC-TA clusters under different pHs were determined by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The results showed that all five LMWOAs inhibited TC adsorption and degradation. The preferential adsorption of TA on goethite changed TC adsorption from inner spherical to outer spherical complexation and mainly inhibited TC adsorption and degradation of the singly coordinated hydroxyl group. TC degradation rate decreased from 0.0287 to 0 h-1 in the first stage. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results showed that TA could influence the interactions of amide groups, C = O on the A-ring, and dimethylamino group of TC with goethite, and the formation of ≡Fe(II) was inhibited. In addition to competing for the effective sites, the effects of complexation between TA and TC in solution should be considered. According to DFT calculations, hydrogen bonds could be formed between the carboxyl group of TA and the H atom of TC at different pH. These findings can provide evidence for estimating the contribution of adsorption and degradation to TC removal by iron oxides with the coexistence of LMWOAs in a soil-water environment.

Adsorption of fluoroquinolone antibiotics onto ferrihydrite under different anionic surfactants and solution pH

To date, little information is available regarding the impacts of the widespread anionic surfactants on the adsorption behaviors of antibiotics onto typical iron oxides. Herein, we have investigated the effects of two typical surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS)) on the adsorption of two widely used antibiotics (i.e., levofloxacin (LEV) and ciprofloxacin (CIP)) onto ferrihydrite. Results of kinetic experiments showed that the adsorption of antibiotics was well fitted by the pseudo-second-order kinetic models, indicating that the adsorption process might be controlled by chemisorption. The affinity of ferrihydrite toward CIP was greater than that toward LEV, which was ascribed to the higher hydrophobicity of CIP than LEV. Both surfactants enhanced antibiotic adsorption owing to SDS or SDBS molecules as bridge agents between ferrihydrite particles and antibiotics. Interestingly, the extent of the enhanced effects of surfactants on antibiotic adsorption declined as the background solution pH increased from 5.0 to 9.0, which was mainly due to the weaker hydrophobic interactions between antibiotics and the adsorbed surfactants on the iron oxide surfaces as well as the greater electrostatic repulsion between the anionic species of antibiotics and the negatively charged ferrihydrite particles at higher pH. Together, these findings emphasize the importance of widespread surfactants for illustrating the interactions between fluoroquinolone antibiotics and iron oxide minerals in the natural environment.

Oxalic-activated minerals enhance the stabilization of polypropylene and polyamide microplastics in soil: Crucial roles of mineral dissolution coupled surface oxygen-functional groups

Low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) prevalent in soil environments may influence the transport, fate, and orientation of microplastics (MPs) by mediating mineral interfaces. Nevertheless, few studies have reported their impact on the environmental behavior of MPs in soil. Here, the functional regulation of oxalic at mineral interfaces and its stabilizing mechanism for MPs were investigated. The results showed that oxalic drove MPs stability onto minerals and new adsorption pathways, which are dependent on the bifunctionality of minerals induced by oxalic acid. Besides, our findings reveal that in the absence of oxalic acid, the stability of hydrophilic and hydrophobic MPs on kaolinite (KL) mainly displays hydrophobic dispersion, whereas electrostatic interaction is dominant on ferric sesquioxide (FS). Moreover, the amide functional groups ([NHCO]) of PA-MPs may have positive feedback on the stability of MPs. In the presence of oxalic acid (2-100 mM), the MPs stability efficiency and property onto minerals were integrally increased in batch studies. Our results demonstrate the oxalic acid-activated interfacial interaction of minerals via dissolution coupled O-functional groups. Oxalic-induced functionality at mineral interfaces further activates electrostatic interaction, cation bridge effect, hydrogen forces, ligand exchange and hydrophobicity. These findings provide new insights into the regulating mechanisms of oxalic-activated mineral interfacial properties for environmental behavior of emerging pollutants.
