Highly sensitive and selective thiourea electrochemical sensor based on novel silver nanoparticles/chitosan nanocomposite

Synthesis of silver‑bismuth oxide encapsulated hydrazone functionalized chitosan (AgBi2O3/FCS) nanocomposite for electrochemical sensing of glucose, H2O2 and Escherichia coli O157:H7

In this work, silver‑bismuth oxide encapsulated 1,3,5-triazine-bis(4-methylbenzenesulfonyl)-hydrazone functionalized chitosan (SBO/FCS) nanocomposite was synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method. The amine (-NH2) group was functionalized by the addition of cyanuric acid chloride followed by 4-methylbenzenesulfonol hydrazide. The SBO/FCS has been characterized by FT-IR, X-ray diffraction, XPS, HR-SEM, HR-TEM, AFM, and thermogravimetry (TGA). Under the optimum conditions, the SBO/FCS sensor showed brilliant electrochemical accomplishment for the sensing of glucose and H2O2 by a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.057 μM and 0.006 μM. It also showed linearity for glucose 0.008-4.848 mM and for H2O2 of 0.01-6.848 mM. Similarly, the sensor exhibited a low sensitivity to glucose (32 μA mM-1 cm-2) and a good sensitivity to H2O2 (295 μA mM-1 cm-2). In addition, that the prepared electrode could be used to sense the glucose and H2O2 levels in real samples such as blood serum and HeLa cell lines. The screen printed electrode (SPE) immunosensor could sense the E. coli O157:H7 concurrently and quantitatively with a linear range of 1.0 × 101-1.0 × 109 CFU mL-1 and a LOD of 4 CFU mL-1. Likewise, the immunosensor efficiently detect spiked E. coli O157:H7 in milk, chicken, and pork samples, with recoveries ranging from 89.70 to 104.72 %, demonstrating that the immunosensor was accurate and reliable.

Zinc oxide nanorod/rutin modified electrode for the detection of Thiourea in real samples

In this work, a novel electrochemical detection strategy was developed based on a metal-organic framework of zinc oxide nanorod nanoparticles and rutin for selective screening of Thiourea as toxic chemicals. The zinc oxide nanorod were synthesized by following direct chemical precipitation methods and characterized by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis. The surface of modified electrodes was also characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopes, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and attenuated total reflectance flourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Furthermore, the electrochemical activity of the developed sensor was tested by cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The modified electrode showed outstanding electro-catalytic activity towards the detection of Thiourea in phosphate buffer saline at a high pH level of 12.0. The proposed sensor showed a linear range of linearity in a concentration ranging from 5.0 × 10-6 - 900 × 10-6 molL-1 and a detection limit of 2.0 × 10-6 molL-1. Moreover, the selectivity of the developed electrochemical sensor was investigated for the detection of Thiourea in the presence of organic compounds and a group of anions. Furthermore, the proposed strategy demonstrated an excellent recovery value in the spiked farmland water and fruit juice sample.

Development and Characterization of Nano-Ink from Silicon Carbide/Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes/Synthesized Silver Nanoparticles for Non-Enzymatic Paraoxon Residuals Detection

The ongoing advancement in the synthesis of new nanomaterials has accelerated the rapid development of non-enzymatic pesticide sensors based on electrochemical platforms. This study aims to develop and characterize Nano-ink for applying organophosphorus pesticides using paraoxon residue detection. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes, silicon carbide, and silver nanoparticles were used to create Nano-ink using a green synthesis process in 1:1:0, 1:1:0.5, and 1:1:1 ratios, respectively. These composites were combined with chitosan of varying molecular weights, which served as a stabilizing glue to keep the Nano-ink employed in a functioning electrode stable. By using X-ray powder diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and a field emission scanning electron microscope, researchers were able to examine the crystallinity, element composition, and surface morphology of Nano-ink. The performance of the proposed imprinted working electrode Nano-ink was investigated using cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry techniques. The Cyclic voltammogram of Ag NPs/chitosan (medium, 50 mg) illustrated high current responses and favorable conditions of the Nano-ink modified electrode. Under the optimized conditions, the reduction currents of paraoxon using the DPV techniques demonstrated a linear reaction ranging between 0.001 and 1.0 µg/mL (R2 = 0.9959) with a limit of detection of 0.0038 µg/mL and a limit of quantitation of 0.011 µg/mL. It was concluded that the fabricated Nano-ink showed good electrochemical activity for non-enzymatic paraoxon sensing.

Confined Silver Nanoparticles in Ionic Liquid Films

This work reports the formation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by sputter deposition in thin films of three different ionic liquids (ILs) with the same anion (bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide) and cation (imidazolium), but with different alkyl chain lengths and symmetries in the cationic moiety ([C4C1im][NTf2], [C2C2im][NTf2], and [C5C5im][NTf2]). Ionic liquid (IL) films in the form of microdroplets with different thicknesses (200 to 800 monolayers) were obtained through vacuum thermal evaporation onto glass substrates coated with indium tin oxide (ITO). The sputtering process of the Ag onto the ILs when conducted simultaneously with argon plasma promoted the coalescence of the ILs’ droplets and the formation, incorporation, and stabilization of the metallic nanoparticles in the coalesced IL films. The formation/stabilization of the AgNPs in the IL films was confirmed using high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. It was found that the IL films with larger thicknesses (600 and 800 monolayers) were better media for the formation of AgNPs. Among the ILs used, [C5C5im][NTf2] was found to be particularly promising for the stabilization of AgNPs. The use of larger IL droplets as capture media was found to promote a better stabilization of the AgNPs, thereby reducing their tendency to aggregate.

A Sensitive Hydroquinone Amperometric Sensor Based on a Novel Palladium Nanoparticle/Porous Silicon/Polypyrrole-Carbon Black Nanocomposite

Exposure to hydroquinone (HQ) can cause various health hazards and negative impacts on the environment. Therefore, we developed an efficient electrochemical sensor to detect and quantify HQ based on palladium nanoparticles deposited in a porous silicon-polypyrrole-carbon black nanocomposite (Pd@PSi-PPy-C)-fabricated glassy carbon electrode. The structural and morphological characteristics of the newly fabricated Pd@PSi-PPy-C nanocomposite were investigated utilizing FESEM, TEM, EDS, XPS, XRD, and FTIR spectroscopy. The exceptionally higher sensitivity of 3.0156 μAμM^-1 cm^-2 and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.074 μM were achieved for this innovative electrochemical HQ sensor. Applying this novel modified electrode, we could detect wide-ranging HQ (1-450 μM) in neutral pH media. This newly fabricated HQ sensor showed satisfactory outcomes during the real sample investigations. During the analytical investigation, the Pd@PSi-PPy-C/GCE sensor demonstrated excellent reproducibility, repeatability, and stability. Hence, this work can be an effective method in developing a sensitive electrochemical sensor to detect harmful phenol derivatives for the green environment.

Modification of Thin Film Composite Membrane by Chitosan-Silver Particles to Improve Desalination and Anti-Biofouling Performance

Reverse osmosis (RO) desalination is a technology that is commonly used to mitigate water scarcity problems; one of its disadvantages is the bio-fouling of the membranes used, which reduces its performance. In order to minimize this problem, this study prepared modified thin film composite (TFC) membranes by the incorporation of chitosan-silver particles (CS-Ag) of different molecular weights, and evaluated them in terms of their anti-biofouling and desalination performances. The CS-Ag were obtained using ionotropic gelation, and were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). The modified membranes were synthetized by the incorporation of the CS-Ag using the interfacial polymerization method. The membranes (MCS-Ag) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle. Bactericidal tests by total cell count were performed using Bacillus halotolerans MCC1, and anti-adhesion properties were confirmed through biofilm cake layer thickness and total organic carbon (%). The desalination performance was defined by permeate flux, hydraulic resistance, salt rejection and salt permeance by using 2000 and 5000 mg L^-1 of NaCl. The MCS-Ag-L presented superior permeate flux and salt rejection (63.3% and 1% higher, respectively), as well as higher bactericidal properties (76% less in total cell count) and anti-adhesion capacity (biofilm thickness layer 60% and total organic carbon 75% less, compared with the unmodified membrane). The highest hydraulic resistance value was for MCS-Ag-M. In conclusion, the molecular weight of CS-Ag significantly influences the desalination and the antimicrobial performances of the membranes; as the molecular weight decreases, the membranes' performances increase. This study shows a possible alternative for increasing membrane useful life in the desalination process.
