Abstract
Cationic polymers have recently attracted considerable interest as research breakthroughs for various industrial and biomedical applications. They are particularly interesting due to their highly positive charges, acceptable physicochemical properties, and ability to undergo further modifications, making them attractive candidates for biomedical applications. Polyethyleneimines (PEIs), as the most extensively utilized polymers, are one of the valuable and prominent classes of polycations. Owing to their flexible polymeric chains, broad molecular weight (MW) distribution, and repetitive structural units, their customization for functional composites is more feasible. The specific beneficial attributes of PEIs could be introduced by purposeful functionalization or modification, long service life, biocompatibility, and distinct geometry. Therefore, PEIs have significant potential in biotechnology, medicine, and bioscience. In this review, we present the advances in PEI-based nanomaterials, their transfection efficiency, and their toxicity over the past few years. Furthermore, the potential and suitability of PEIs for various applications are highlighted and discussed in detail. This review aims to inspire readers to investigate innovative approaches for the design and development of next-generation PEI-based nanomaterials possessing cutting-edge functionalities and appealing characteristics.

Abstract
The rational design and controllable synthesis of functional silica-based materials have gained increased interest in a variety of biomedical and biotechnological applications due to their unique properties. The current review shows that marine organisms, such as siliceous sponges and diatoms, could be the inspiration for the fabrication of advanced biohybrid materials. Several biomolecules were involved in the molecular mechanism of biosilicification in vivo. Mimicking their behavior, functional silica-based biomaterials have been generated via biomimetic and bioinspired silicification in vitro. Additionally, several advanced technologies were developed for in vitro and in vivo immobilization of biomolecules with potential applications in biocatalysis, biosensors, bioimaging, and immunoassays. A thin silica layer could coat a single living cell or virus as a protective shell offering new opportunities in biotechnology and nanomedicine fields. Promising nanotechnologies have been developed for drug encapsulation and delivery in a targeted and controlled manner, in particular for poorly soluble hydrophobic drugs. Moreover, biomimetic silica, as a morphogenetically active biocompatible material, has been utilized in the field of bone regeneration and in the development of biomedical implantable devices. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: In nature, silica-based biomaterials, such as diatom frustules and sponge spicules, with high mechanical and physical properties were created under biocompatible conditions. The fundamental knowledge underlying the molecular mechanisms of biosilica formation could inspire engineers and chemists to design novel hybrid biomaterials using molecular biomimetic strategies. The production of such biohybrid materials brings the biosilicification field closer to practical applications. This review starts with the biosilicification process of sponges and diatoms with recently updated researches. Then, this article covers recent advances in the design of silica-based biomaterials and their potential applications in the fields of biotechnology and nanomedicine, highlighting several promising technologies for encapsulation of functional proteins and living cells, drug delivery and the preparation of scaffolds for bone regeneration.

Abstract
In this review, we provide a general and clear overview about the different alternatives reported to fabricate a myriad of polypeptide architectures based on the ring-opening polymerization of N-carbonyanhydrides (ROP NCAs). First of all, the strategies for the preparation of NCA monomers directly from natural occurring or from modified amino acids are analyzed. The synthetic alternatives to prepare non-functionalized and functionalized NCAs are presented. Protection/deprotection protocols, as well as other functionalization chemistries are discussed in this section. Later on, the mechanisms involved in the ROP NCA polymerization, as well as the strategies developed to reduce the eventually occurring side reactions are presented. Finally, a general overview of the synthetic strategies described in the literature to fabricate different polypeptide architectures is provided. This part of the review is organized depending on the complexity of the macromolecular topology prepared. Therefore, linear homopolypeptides, random and block copolypeptides are described first. The next sections include cyclic and branched polymers such as star polypeptides, polymer brushes and highly branched structures including arborescent or dendrigraft structures.

Efficient immobilization of AGE and NAL enzymes onto functional amino resin as recyclable and high-performance biocatalyst. Bioprocess Biosyst Eng 2016; 40:331-340. Abstract
N-Acetylglucosamine-2-epimerase (AGE) and N-acetylneuraminic acid lyase (NAL) were immobilized for synthesis of N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) on three resins: Amberzyme oxirane resin (AOR), poly (styrene-co-DVB)-Br resin (PBR) and amino resin (AR). The loading capacity and immobilized enzyme activity showed that AR was the best carrier. Three methods of glutaraldehyde cross-linking were tested and simultaneous cross-linking and immobilization was demonstrated to be the best method. The functional properties of immobilized AGE and NAL were studied and compared to those of the free enzyme. The highest enzyme activities of free and immobilized AGE were obtained in 0.1 M potassium phosphate buffer at pH 7.5 and a temperature of 37 °C. Comparatively, the highest NAL activities were at pH 8.5. Meanwhile, an increase in K m (from 1.14 to 1.31 mg·mL-1 for AGE and from 1.05 to 1.25 mg·mL-1 for NAL) and a decrease in V max (from 177.53 to 106.37 µg·min-1 mL-1 for AGE and from 126.41 to 95.96 µg·min-1 mL-1 for NAL) were recorded after immobilization. The AR-glutaraldehyde-enzyme system exhibited better thermal stability than the free enzyme, and retained 72% of its initial activity even after eight repeated runs. The apparent activation energy (E a) of the free and immobilized AGE (NAL) was 117.14 kJ·mol-1 (124.21 kJ·mol-1) and 78.45 kJ·mol-1 (66.64 kJ·mol-1), respectively, implying that the catalytic efficiency of the immobilized enzyme was restricted by mass-transfer rather than kinetic limit. Subsequently, Neu5Ac production from GlcNAc using immobilized enzymes in one reactor was carried out resulting 101.45 g·L-1 of Neu5Ac and the highest conversion ratio of 82%. This method of enzyme immobilization may have a promising future for Neu5Ac production in industry.

Abstract
Inspired by biosilicification, biomimetic polymer-silica nanocomposite has aroused a lot of interest from the viewpoints of both scientific research and technological applications. In this study, a novel dual functional polymer, NH₂-Alginate, is synthesized through an oxidation-amination-reduction process. The "catalysis function" ensures the as-prepared NH₂-Alginate inducing biomimetic mineralization of silica from low concentration precursor (Na₂SiO₃), and the "template function" cause microscopic phase separation in aqueous solution. The diameter of resultant NH₂-Alginate micelles in aqueous solution distributed from 100 nm to 1.5 μm, and is influenced by the synthetic process of NH₂-Alginate. The size and morphology of obtained NH₂-Alginate/silica nanocomposite are correlated with the micelles. NH₂-Alginate/silica nanocomposite was subsequently utilized to immobilize β-Glucuronidase (GUS). The harsh condition tolerance and long-term storage stability of the immobilized GUS are notably improved due to the buffering effect of NH₂-Alginate and cage effect of silica matrix.

Abstract
Phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) from Rhodotorula glutinis was encapsulated within polyethyleneimine-mediated biomimetic silica. The main factors in the preparation of biomimetic silica were optimized by response surface methodology (RSM). Compared to free PAL (about 2 U), the encapsulated PAL retained more than 43 % of their initial activity after 1 h of incubation time at 60 °C, whereas free PAL lost most of activity in the same conditions. It was clearly indicated that the thermal stability of PAL was improved by encapsulation. Moreover, the encapsulated PAL exhibited the excellent stability of the enzyme against denaturants and storage stability, and pH stability was improved by encapsulation. Operational stability of 7 reaction cycles showed that the encapsulated PAL was stable. Nevertheless, the K m value of encapsulated PAL in biomimetic silica was higher than that of the free PAL due to lower total surface area and increased mass transfer resistance.

Abstract
The hybrid alginate/gelatin/calcium oxalate (AGOCa) support was successfully synthesized through the biomimetic mineralization method for immobilization in situ of a pectinolytic extract from Aspergillus niger ATCC 9642 via entrapment technique. The efficiency of immobilization reached 72.7%. Sodium oxalate buffer (100 mM, pH 5.5) was selected as adjuvant of the immobilization process by allowing the formation of a calcified shell around the calcium alginate capsule, significantly increasing the stability to storage, thermal and recycling of the enzymatic immobilized pectinolytic extract. The pH and temperature for maximum activity were from 5.0 to 6.0 and 60 to 80 °C, respectively. The new hybrid support can be a potential alternative to obtain immobilized pectinases with properties for advantageous industrial applications.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of polyelectrolyte-decorated hybrid colloidal particles by using negatively charged polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) micelles as colloidal templates for silica mineralization under ambient conditions. The negatively charged polyelectrolytes including poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), poly(L-glutamic acid) (PLGA), and poly(styrene sulfonate) (PSS) were complexed with poly(L-lysine) at non-stoichiometric mixing weight percentage to form negatively charged PEC micelles. Varying the mixing weight percentage and molecular weight of polyelectrolytes led to the changes in the size and charge of the PEC particles. Silica mineralization in the complex core resulted in the colloidally stable hybrid particles decorated with different negatively charged polyelectrolytes. The colloidal properties of these polyelectrolyte-decorated hybrid particles were determined by the composition and decorated polyelectrolyte. This approach provided a simple and facile method to prepare polymer-decorated hybrid colloidal particles comprised of different polymers and their colloidal properties can be easily tuned by varying the decorated polymer and synthesis condition.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) particles by mixing the negatively and positively charged polyelectrolytes, poly(L-glutamic acid) (PGA) and poly(2-(N,N-diethylamino) ethylmethacrylate) (PDEAEMA), and the use of negatively charged PEC particles as colloidal templates for silica mineralization under ambient conditions. The structure and property of PEC particles, as well as polypeptide chain conformation, were found to depend on the mixing weight percentage, polymer molecular weight, and solution condition. The negatively charged PEC micelles can be deposited with silica without loss colloid stability, leading to PGA-decorated hybrid particles. These hybrid particles were negatively charged at neutral and basic condition and become positively charged, accompanying the conformational changes of the grafted PGA, upon decreasing pH below isoelectric points due to the protonation/deprotonation of PGA and PDEAEMA. Functional nanoparticles such as gold NPs could be incorporated using polypeptides as the mediating agents. These hybrid particles loaded with drug exhibited noticeable pH-responsive behavior with accelerated release at acidic condition, demonstrating the potential for use as pH-responsive delivery vehicles. This type of polypeptide-decorated hybrid particles represents an interesting class of organic-inorganic hybrids in which the functional properties of polypeptides such as biocompatibility, stimuli responsiveness, and directed growth of metal nanoparticles can be incorporated.
