Abstract
Heavy metal pollution in water bodies is a global concern. The prominent source of metal contamination in aqueous streams and groundwater is wastewater containing heavy metal ions. Elevated concentrations of heavy metals in water bodies can have a negative impact on water quality and public health. The most effective way to remove metal contaminants from drinking water is thought to be adsorption. A deacetylated derivative of chitin, chitosan, has a wide range of commercial uses since it is biocompatible, nontoxic, and biodegradable. Due to its exceptional adsorption behavior toward numerous hazardous heavy metals from aqueous solutions, chitosan and its modifications have drawn a lot of interest in recent years. Due to its remarkable adsorption behavior toward a range of dangerous heavy metals, chitosan is a possible agent for eliminating metals from aqueous solutions. The review has focused on the ideas of biosorption, its kinds, architectures, and characteristics, as well as using modified (physically and chemically modified) chitosan, blends, and composites to remove heavy metals from water. The main objective of the review is to describe the most important aspects of chitosan-based adsorbents that might be beneficial for enhancing the adsorption capabilities of modified chitosan and promoting the usage of this material in the removal of heavy metal pollutants.

Abstract
Abstract
Recently, removal of nickel ions has been gaining a lot of attention because of the negative impact of nickel ions on the environment. The aim of this review paper is to organize the scattered available information on removal of nickel ions from aqueous solutions through the adsorption process. Survey on investigated materials suggests that composite- and polymer-based adsorbents have the most effective capability for nickel adsorption. The composite material class, i.e. CaCO3-maltose, followed by biopolymer-based material showed the highest Ni(II) adsorption capacity of 769.23 and 500 mg/g, respectively. The importance of treatment parameters (i.e. pH, temperature, contact time, and metal ion concentration) is discussed, together with their effect on the underlying physicochemical phenomena, giving particular attention to the adsorption/desorption mechanism. It was ascertained that adsorption of nickel ions is pH dependent and the optimal pH range for adsorption of Ni(II) ions was in range of 6–8. In general, nickel adsorption is an endothermic and spontaneous process that mainly occurs by forming a monolayer on the adsorbent (experimental data are often fitted by Langmuir isotherms and pseudo-second-order kinetics). Regeneration (i.e. desorption) is also reviewed, suggesting that acidic eluents (e.g. HCl and HNO3) allow, in most of the cases, an efficacious spent adsorbent recovery. The percentage use of desorption agents followed the order of acids (77%) > chelators (8.5%) > alkalis (8%) > salts (4.5%) > water (2%). Helpful information about adsorption and desorption of nickel ions from aqueous solutions is provided.

Abstract
Abstract
High-molecular alginates were extracted from Djiboutian brown seaweeds, Sargassum sp. (S) and Turbinaria (T) and isolated as sodium salts in 31.0 and 42.7% yield by weight. 1H NMR analysis of the uronic acid block-structure indicates mannuronic/guluronic M/G ratios of 0.49 and 3.0 for the alginates extracts, respectively. The resulting alginates were deposited onto native Aerosil 200 silica, amine-functionalized and carboxyl-functionalized silica particles to enhance the mechanical strength providing Alg.(T/S)+SiO2) Alg.(T/S)+SiO2NH2) and Alg.(T)+SiO2CO2H) composites. Taking Pb(II) as examples for toxic heavy metal ions, the effects of the pH, adsorption kinetics, and isotherms have been studied systematically. The best uptake achieved was 585 mg Pb2+ ion/g using Alg.S+SiO2NH2. Furthermore, the Pb(II) ions were successfully desorbed in several cycles from Alg.T+SiO2 using 0.5 M hydrochloric acid. Therefore, Alg.T+SiO2 may be considered as a low-cost biosorbent that quickly adsorbs and easily desorbs analyte lead ions. A comparison of the adsorption capacity of our biopolymer-coated particles with that of other adsorbents reported in the literature reveals that our materials are among the best performing for the adsorption of Pb(II).

Abstract
Three types of organo-mineral composites have been probed as adsorbents for the removal of Ni(II) ions from aqueous solution. Native Aerosil 200 silica particles have been encapsulated with carboxymethylchitosan (CM-CS) providing SiO2+CM-CS, surface-silanized silica particles SiO2NH2+CM-CS were obtained by treatment with APTES and subsequent encapsulation by CM-CS. Alternatively, surface-carboxylated Aerosil 200 was coated by CM-CS affording SiO2CO2H+CM-CS. The materials have been characterized by various techniques. The effects of counter ions (Cl-, Br-, CH3COO-, NO3- and SO42-), pH and initial Ni(II) concentration on the adsorption capacities have been systematically investigated. The maximum adsorption capacity qm of CM-CS-coated silica was determined using the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. For SiO2CO2H+CM-CS, SiO2+CM-CS and SiO2NH2+CM-CS, they decrease at pH 7 in the order 256mg/g>140mg/g>105mg/g. The adsorption kinetic fits well with a pseudo-second order model. These carbohydrate-derived biosorbents are excellent adsorbents with capacities superior to most other adsorbents reported in the literature.

Abstract
AbstractEffects of chlorides of univalent (LiCl, NaCl, KCl), bivalent (MgCl2, BaCl2) and trivalent (AlCl3) metals at different concentration (0.001–0.1 M) on the behavior of nanosilica A-200 (0.5–5 wt.%) in aqueous media are analyzed using photon correlation spectroscopy (particle size distribution, PSD), electrophoresis (zeta potential ζ), potentiometric titration (surface charge density), and estimation of screening length of primary particles and their aggregates. The zeta potential and the PSD are affected by silica content, pH, and concentration and type of dissolved salts. Smaller but more strongly hydrated Li+ cations caused stronger nonlinear dependences of the zeta potential on pH and salt content than Na+ or K+. This nonlinearity is much stronger at a lower content of silica (0.5–1 wt.%) than at C
A-200 = 2.5 or 5 wt.%. At a high concentration of nanosilica (5 wt.%) the effect of K+ ions causes stronger diminution of the negative value of the zeta potential due to better adsorption of larger cations. Therefore, the influence of K+ on increasing screening length is stronger than that of Na+ for both primary nanoparticles and their aggregates. A similar difference in the ζ values is observed for different in size cations Ba2+ and Mg2+.

Abstract
Over the past decades, organic-inorganic hybrid polymers have been applied in different fields, including the adsorption of pollutants from wastewater and solid-state separations. In this review, firstly, these compounds are classified. These compounds are prepared by sol-gel method, self-assembly process (mesopores), assembling of nanobuilding blocks (e.g., layered or core-shell compounds) and as interpenetrating networks and hierarchically structures. Lastly, the adsorption characteristics of heavy metals of these materials, including different kinds of functional groups, selectivity of them for heavy metals, effect of pH and synthesis conditions on adsorption capacity, are studied.

Abstract
A novel hybrid nanomaterial was fabricated by encapsulating ZrO2 nanoparticles into spherical polystyrene beads (MPS) covalently bound with charged sulfonate groups (-SO3(-)). The resultant adsorbent, Zr-MPS, exhibited more preferential sorption toward Pb(II) than the simple equivalent mixture of MPS and ZrO2. Such observation might be ascribed to the presence of sulfonate groups of the polymeric host, which could enhance nano-ZrO2 dispersion and Pb(II) diffusion kinetics. To further elucidate the role of surface functional groups, we encapsulated nano-ZrO2 onto another two macroporous polystyrene with different surface groups (i.e., -N(CH3)3(+)/-CH2Cl, respectively) and a conventional activated carbon. The three obtained nanocomposites were denoted as Zr-MPN, Zr-MPC, and Zr-GAC. The presence of -SO3(-) and -N(CH3)3(+) was more favorable for nano-ZrO2 dispersion than the neutral -CH2Cl, resulting in the sequence of sorption capacities as Zr-MPS > Zr-MPN > Zr-GAC > Zr-MPC. Column Pb(II) sorption by the four nanocomposites further demonstrated the excellent Pb(II) retention by Zr-MPS. Comparatively, Zr-MPN of well-dispersed nano-ZrO2 and high sorption capacities showed much faster breakthrough for Pb(II) sequestration than Zr-MPS, because the electrostatic repulsion of surface quaternary ammonium group of MPN and Pb(II) ion would result in a poor sorption kinetics. This study suggests that charged groups in the host resins improve the dispersion of embedded nanoparticles and enhance the reactivity and capacity for sorption of metal ions. Suitably charged functional groups in the hosts are crucial in the fabrication of efficient nanocomposites for the decontamination of water from toxic metals and other charged pollutants.
