Antibacterial activities effectuated by co-continuous epoxy-based polymer materials

Improving the Antimicrobial and Mechanical Properties of Epoxy Resins via Nanomodification: An Overview

The main purpose of this work is to provide a comprehensive overview on the preparation of multifunctional epoxies, with improved antimicrobial activity and enhanced mechanical properties through nanomodification. In the first section, we focus on the approaches to achieve antimicrobial activity, as well as on the methods used to evaluate their efficacy against bacteria and fungi. Relevant application examples are also discussed, with particular reference to antifouling and anticorrosion coatings for marine environments, dental applications, antimicrobial fibers and fabrics, and others. Subsequently, we discuss the mechanical behaviors of nanomodified epoxies with improved antimicrobial properties, analyzing the typical damage mechanisms leading to the significant toughening effect of nanomodification. Some examples of mechanical properties of nanomodified polymers are provided. Eventually, the possibility of achieving, at the same time, antimicrobial and mechanical improvement capabilities by nanomodification with nanoclay is discussed, with reference to both nanomodified epoxies and glass/epoxy composite laminates. According to the literature, a nanomodified epoxy can successfully exhibit antibacterial properties, while increasing its fracture toughness, even though its tensile strength may decrease. As for laminates-obtaining antibacterial properties is not followed by improved interlaminar properties.

Dissimilar Materials Bonding Using Epoxy Monolith

The epoxy monolith with a highly porous structure is fabricated by the thermal curing of 2,2-bis(4-glycidyloxyphenyl)propane and 4,4'-methylenebis(cyclohexylamine) in the presence of poly(ethylene glycol) as the porogen via polymerization-induced phase separation. In this study, we demonstrated a new type of dissimilar material bonding method for various polymers and metals coated with the epoxy monolith. On the basis of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations, the pore size and number of epoxy monoliths were evaluated to be 1.1-114 μm and 8.7-48 200 mm^-2, respectively, depending on the ratio of the epoxy resin and cross-linking agent used for the monolith fabrication. Various kinds of thermoplastics, such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyoxymethylene, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer, polycarbonate bisphenol-A, and poly(ethylene terephthalate), were bonded to the monolith-modified metal plates by thermal welding. The bond strength for the single lap-shear tensile test of stainless steel and copper plates with the thermoplastics was in the range of 1.2-7.5 MPa, which was greater than the bond strength value for each bonding system without monolith modification. The SEM observation of fractured test pieces directly confirmed an anchor effect on this bonding system. The elongated deformation of the plastics that filled in the pores of the epoxy monolith, was observed. It was concluded that the bond strength significantly depended on the intrinsic strength of the used thermoplastics. The epoxy monolith bonding of hard plastics, such as polystyrene and poly(methyl methacrylate), was performed by the additional use of adhesives, solvents, and a reactive monomer. The epoxy monolith sheets were also successfully fabricated and applied to dissimilar material bonding.

Versatile preparation of surface-skinless particles of epoxy resin-based monoliths using a well-defined diblock copolymer surfactant

This is the first report on a versatile and facile preparation method for well-defined and surface-skinless epoxy resin-based monolithic particles by polymerization-induced phase separation in an oil-in-oil emulsion system in the presence of a designed block copolymer.

Durable contact active antimicrobial materials formed by a one-step covalent modification of polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose and glass surfaces

In this work we have applied a direct covalent linkage of quaternary ammonium salts (QAS) to prepare a series of contact active antimicrobial surfaces based on widely utilized materials. Formation of antimicrobial polyvinyl alcohol (PVA-QAS), cellulose (cellulose-QAS) and glass (glass-QAS) surfaces was achieved by one step synthesis with no auxiliary linkers. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed tridentate binding mode of the antimicrobial agent. The antimicrobial activity of the prepared materials was tested on Bacillus cereus, Alicyclobacillus acidoterrestris, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Active site density of the modified materials was examined and found to correlate with their antimicrobial activity. Stability studies at different pH values and temperatures confirmed that the linkage of the bioactive moiety to the surface is robust and resistant to a range of pH and temperatures. Prolonged long-term effectiveness of the contact active materials was demonstrated by their repeated usage, without loss of the antimicrobial efficacy.
