Multiscale modeling of dendrite formation in lithium-ion batteries

Laser-induced graphene electrochemical sensor for quantitative detection of phytotoxic aluminum ions (Al3+) in soils extracts

Aluminum in its Al3+ form is a metal that inhibits plant growth, especially in acidic soils (pH < 5.5). Rapid and accurate quantitative detection of Al3+ in agricultural soils is critical for the timely implementation of remediation strategies. However, detecting metal ions requires time-consuming preparation of samples, using expensive instrumentation and non-portable spectroscopic techniques. As an alternative, electrochemical sensors offer a cost-effective and minimally invasive approach for in situ quantification of metal ions. Here, we developed and validated an electrochemical sensor based on bismuth-modified laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrodes for Al3+ quantitative detection in a range relevant to agriculture (1-300 ppm). Our results show a linear Al3+ detection range of 1.07-300 ppm with a variation coefficient of 5.3%, even in the presence of other metal ions (Pb2+, Cd2+, and Cu2+). The sensor offers a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.34 ppm and a limit of quantification (LOQ) of 1.07 ppm. We compared its accuracy for soil samples with pH < 4.8 to within 89-98% of spectroscopic methods (ICP-OES) and potentiometric titration. This technology's portability, easy to use, and cost-effectiveness make it a promising candidate for in situ quantification and remediation of Al3+ in agricultural soils and other complex matrices.

Operando Electrochemical Liquid Cell Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy Investigation of the Growth and Evolution of the Mosaic Solid Electrolyte Interphase for Lithium-Ion Batteries

The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is a key component of a lithium-ion battery forming during the first few dischage/charge cycles at the interface between the anode and the electrolyte. The SEI passivates the anode-electrolyte interface by inhibiting further electrolyte decomposition, extending the battery's cycle life. Insights into SEI growth and evolution in terms of structure and composition remain difficult to access. To unravel the formation of the SEI layer during the first cycles, operando electrochemical liquid cell scanning transmission electron microscopy (ec-LC-STEM) is employed to monitor in real time the nanoscale processes that occur at the anode-electrolyte interface in their native electrolyte environment. The results show that the formation of the SEI layer is not a one-step process but comprises multiple steps. The growth of the SEI is initiated at low potential during the first charge by decomposition of the electrolyte leading to the nucleation of inorganic nanoparticles. Thereafter, the growth continues during subsequent cycles by forming an island-like layer. Eventually, a dense layer is formed with a mosaic structure composed of larger inorganic patches embedded in a matrix of organic compounds. While the mosaic model for the structure of the SEI is generally accepted, our observations document in detail how the complex structure of the SEI is built up during discharge/charge cycling.

Self-Healing Polymer Electrolyte for Dendrite-Free Li Metal Batteries with Ultra-High-Voltage Ni-Rich Layered Cathodes

Practical applications of polymer electrolytes in lithium (Li) metal batteries with high-voltage Ni-rich cathodes have been hindered by the dendrite growth and poor oxidative stability of electrolytes. Herein, a self-healing polymer electrolyte is developed by in situ copolymerization of 2-(3-(6-methyl4-oxo-1,4-dihydropyrimidin-2-yl)ureido)ethyl methacrylate (UPyMA) and ethylene glycol methyl ether acrylate (EGMEA) monomers. With the electrolyte, the dendrite growth is inhibited by spontaneously repairing dendrite-induced defects, cracks, and voids at the Li/electrolyte interface; the suppressed dendrite growth and associated electro-chemo behaviors are visualized by the kinetic Mont-Carlo simulation. Benefitting from the high ionic conductivity, wide electrochemical window and good interfacial stability, the self-healing polymer electrolyte enables stable cycling of the LiNi_0.8 Mn_0.1 Co_0.1 O₂ (NMC811) cathode under 4.7 V, achieving a high specific capacity of ≈228.8 mAh g^-1 and capacity retention of 80.4% over 500 cycles. The new electrolyte is very promising for developing highly safe and dendrite-free Li metal batteries with high energy density.

Growth Mechanism of Micro/Nano Metal Dendrites and Cumulative Strategies for Countering Its Impacts in Metal Ion Batteries: A Review

Metal-ion batteries are capable of delivering high energy density with a longer lifespan. However, they are subject to several issues limiting their utilization. One critical impediment is the budding and extension of solid protuberances on the anodic surface, which hinders the cell functionalities. These protuberances expand continuously during the cyclic processes, extending through the separator sheath and leading to electrical shorting. The progression of a protrusion relies on a number of in situ and ex situ factors that can be evaluated theoretically through modeling or via laboratory experimentation. However, it is essential to identify the dynamics and mechanism of protrusion outgrowth. This review article explores recent advances in alleviating metal dendrites in battery systems, specifically alkali metals. In detail, we address the challenges associated with battery breakdown, including the underlying mechanism of dendrite generation and swelling. We discuss the feasible solutions to mitigate the dendrites, as well as their pros and cons, highlighting future research directions. It is of great importance to analyze dendrite suppression within a pragmatic framework with synergy in order to discover a unique solution to ensure the viability of present (Li) and future-generation batteries (Na and K) for commercial use.
