Allergic diseases, excessive Internet use and suicidal ideation in Korean adolescents

A tree-based corpus annotated with Cyber-Syndrome, symptoms, and acupoints

Prolonged and over-excessive interaction with cyberspace poses a threat to people's health and leads to the occurrence of Cyber-Syndrome, which covers not only physiological but also psychological disorders. This paper aims to create a tree-shaped gold-standard corpus that annotates the Cyber-Syndrome, clinical manifestations, and acupoints that can alleviate their symptoms or signs, designating this corpus as CS-A. In the CS-A corpus, this paper defines six entities and relations subject to annotation. There are 448 texts to annotate in total manually. After three rounds of updating the annotation guidelines, the inter-annotator agreement (IAA) improved significantly, resulting in a higher IAA score of 86.05%. The purpose of constructing CS-A corpus is to increase the popularity of Cyber-Syndrome and draw attention to its subtle impact on people's health. Meanwhile, annotated corpus promotes the development of natural language processing technology. Some model experiments can be implemented based on this corpus, such as optimizing and improving models for discontinuous entity recognition, nested entity recognition, etc. The CS-A corpus has been uploaded to figshare.

[Asthma and suicidal behavior in adolescents: a literature review]

INTRODUCTION

Adolescence is a difficult time in life and asthma has major psychological consequences for adolescents.

OBJECTIVES

This systematic literature review focused on the association between asthma and suicidal behaviors (suicidal ideations [SI], suicide plans [SP] and suicide attempts [SA]) among adolescents in the general population.

METHOD

Research on Medline for the 1980-2021 period. Objectives This systematic literature review focused on the association between asthma and suicidal behaviors (suicidal ideations [SI], suicide plans [SP] and suicide attempts [SA]) among adolescents in the general population.

RESULTS

An overwhelming majority of the studies taken into consideration demonstrated a significant positive association between asthma and suicidal behaviors. Among the 10 studies assessing SI (with or without SP), 9 of them found a significant positive association between asthma and SI. Eight studies assessed SA; five cross-sectional studies and one prospective study demonstrated a significant positive association between asthma and SA. Only one case-control study did not find a significant positive association between asthma and SA after hospitalization for asthma. The two cross-sectional studies assessing suicidal risk taken as a whole (SI, SP and SA) demonstrated a significant positive association between asthma and at least one suicidal behavior. (OR=1.71; P<0.001). However, several studies did not include depression as an adjustment factor.

CONCLUSION

It is important that healthcare professionals assess suicide risk in adolescent suffering from asthma, the objective being to avoid SA or death from SA.

Internet Addiction and Attention in Adolescents: A Systematic Review

Internet addiction (IA) has been explored worldwide and involves some features that might harm social, psychological, and functional aspects. The vulnerability of adolescents might result in some addictive behaviors, and the Internet is one of them. The aim of this systematic review was to identify empirical studies that have been done to explore instruments that have been used to assess IA and to verify what variables and comorbidities are related to IA in adolescents, including executive functions, such as attention. To accomplish our aim, a systematic search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, Web of Science, and PsycINFO. Some inclusion and exclusion criteria were used to select the studies and 44 in total were analyzed independently. The results showed that the most used instrument to assess IA is the Young's Internet Addiction Test. A few studies have been developed in the Western world, and most of them have analyzed attention bias in attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and non-ADHD groups. Furthermore, other variables have been widely explored in the studies, such as depression, sleeping patterns, body weight, aggressiveness, and other addictive substances.

Suicidality among patients with asthma: A systematic review and meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Asthma is associated with multiple psychiatric comorbidities. However, the relationship between asthma and suicidality has not be well established.

METHODS

According to the PRISMA guidelines, protocol of the study was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42019123150). A systematic search of the PubMed, Embase and PsycINFO databases was performed for relevant studies published from its inception to January 25, 2019. Studies that reported the risk of suicidal ideation, attempts and mortality in asthmatics compared with non-asthmatics were included. A random-effects model was used to synthesize the estimates and the quality of the included studies was assessed under the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale.

RESULTS

Twenty-eight studies including 2,759,841 asthmatic patients and 16,290,362 non-asthmatic controls were pooled and analyzed in the current study. The pooled data showed that asthmatic patients had increased risk of exhibiting suicidal ideation (OR, 1.52; 95%CI, 1.37-1.70), suicide attempts (OR, 1.60; 95%CI, 1.33-1.92) and suicide mortality (OR, 1.31; 95%CI, 1.11-1.55) compared to non-asthmatic controls. Noticeably, adolescent asthmatic patients had a more than 2-fold risk of suicide mortality compared to non-asthmatic controls (OR, 2.14; 95%CI, 1.61-2.83).

LIMITATIONS

The limitations of the present study were variability in study designs and various measures of asthma and suicidality, which possibly contribute to notable heterogeneity.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with asthma have a significantly increased risk of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts and suicide mortality. Clinical physicians should pay more attention to the increased risk of suicidality in asthmatics, screen for these suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and make appropriate mental health referrals when necessary.

Depressive Symptoms, Emotional Aggression, School Adjustment, and Mobile Phone Dependency Among Adolescents with Allergic Diseases in South Korea

PURPOSE

This study aimed to examine the effects of depression, aggression, and school adjustment on mobile phone dependency among South Korean adolescents, and to identify the differences in these paths among adolescents with or without allergic diseases.

DESIGN AND METHODS

The Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey, a nationwide multistage cluster sampling survey, was used for this cross-sectional study. Data were collected from 1937 first-year middle school students in South Korea, using self-reported questionnaires. Multiple-group structural equation modeling was used to test the differences of the critical ratio for the variables depressive symptom, emotional aggression, school adjustment, and mobile phone dependency between adolescents with allergic diseases and those without allergic disease.

RESULTS

Depressive symptoms and emotional aggression were significantly higher in the allergic disease group. Significantly different effects were found on the path of depressive symptoms to school adjustment and depressive symptoms to mobile phone dependency.

CONCLUSIONS

Higher depressive symptoms in allergic disease adolescents had a greater negative effect on school adjustment and a more positive effect on mobile phone dependency. Healthcare professionals need to be concerned not only with the physical symptoms of adolescents with allergic diseases but also with psychological issues, such as depression.

PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS

Early assessments and interventions for depressive symptoms in adolescents with allergic diseases could help prevent over dependency on mobile phones, as well as maladjustment to school.

Asthma and allergy as risk factors for suicidal behavior among young adults

An association between allergic disease, depression and suicidality has been reported.

OBJECTIVE

To explore the relationships between suicidality and asthma, allergy, internet addiction, stress, sleep quality, pain/discomfort, and depression, among emerging adults.

PARTICIPANTS

929 college students completed an online survey between October 2015 and April 2017.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study using multivariate analysis techniques was implemented.

RESULTS

Using structural equation modeling, we found that allergies and stress were directly related to pain/discomfort; pain/discomfort was associated to poor sleep, depression, and suicidality. Sleep quality was also affected by stress; while sleep, stress, pain/discomfort, and internet addiction were directly related to depression (all p < .05). Ultimately, four factors impacted suicidality: stress, pain/discomfort, depression, and, indirectly, sleep quality (all p < .05). Although allergy had some effects, these did not reach statistical significance (p < .09).

CONCLUSION

Findings suggest that allergy might impact suicidality indirectly through increased pain/discomfort, poor sleep, and depression.

Asthma and other allergic diseases in relation to suicidal behavior among South Korean adolescents

OBJECTIVES

Adolescent asthma can be the cause of social and psychological problems. We investigated the association between asthma with other allergic diseases and suicidal risk behavior among South Korean adolescents using nationally representative data.

METHODS

Web-based self-report data from the Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey were used in this study (N = 237,022). Complex sample logistic regression was used to define the relationship between suicidal behavior and asthma (n = 7177), with other allergic diseases [asthma with allergic rhinitis (AR) or asthma with atopic dermatitis (AD) (n = 9720), asthma with AD and AR (n = 4971)].

RESULTS

Participants with asthma and other allergies showed a higher prevalence of substance use, greater sexual experience, greater perceived stress, poorer perceived health, more severe depression, more suicidal ideation, and more suicide attempts than those without allergy. Depression, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts increased trend in the following order: no asthma, asthma only, asthma with one other allergy (asthma with AD or asthma with AR), and asthma with AD and AR. After adjusting for multiple confounders, the odds ratio for suicidal ideation with asthma and AD and AR was 1.13 [95% confidence interval (CI), 1.06-1.19] and that for suicide attempts was 1.31 (95% CI, 1.20-1.43).

CONCLUSIONS

Adolescent asthma and other allergies were associated with suicidal behavior.

Excessive internet use in young women: What are the implications?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

There are considerable gender differences in youth engaging in excessive internet use (EIU). This review provides updates based on the recent literature focusing on the EIU in young women to describe its implications including what it constitutes of, its correlates, sequelae and preventive and/or treatment strategies.

RECENT FINDINGS

Definition of EIU and its conceptualization still requires refinement. Recent studies indicate a changing trend towards female predominance of EIU. Women also differ in their internet use compared with men regarding their preference in the internet content and online activities, motives of use and factors related to access to the internet, including the device, sociocultural restrictions, etc. The correlates and sequelae of EIU encompass psychological, physical, biological, family and social domains that could form the basis of identifying individuals at risk and strategizing treatment.

SUMMARY

The findings indicate the need for standardization in definition and measures of EIU for better recognition of EIU and identification of its at-higher-risk females. Effective preventive and treatment measures are still limited by various methodology flaws outlined here.
