Abstract
A novel series of unsymmetrical bis-quinolin-3-yl chalcones has been synthesized under visible light using a Claisen-Schmidt condensation reaction between the 2-(morpholine-piperidine-pyrrolidine-thiomorpholine) substituted quinoline-3-carbaldehyde and 1-(2-methyl-4-phenylquinolin-3-yl) ethan-1-one derivatives, conducted at room temperature in the presence of NaOH/EtOH. The structures of the synthesized compounds have been confirmed by NMR spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectroscopy. The synthesized compounds exhibit λ max values ranging from 215 nm to 290 nm in non-polar to polar solvents, demonstrating positive solvatochromism. Compounds containing nitro group substituent exhibit a significant blue shift owing to their strong electron-withdrawing ability, which also contributes to fluorescence quenching. Geometrical optimization and the calculation of HOMO, LUMO, and energy gap are calculated by using the DFT/B3LYP/6-31G(d) method.

Abstract
The density functional theory (DFT) method using the functional hybrid (B3LYP) and 6-311G(d,p) basis set was utilized for the geometry optimization with dispersion correction, procedure (GO + DC), for the E and Z chalcone isomers -1-(4-aminophenyl)- 3-(i,j-dichlorophenyl)prop-2-en-1-one, where (i) and (j) represent the positions of the two chlorine atoms [(2,3), (2,4),(2,5),(2,6),(3,4), and (3,5)] abbreviated (i,j)-chalcone, and 4-(x,y-dichloro-8aH-chromen-2-yl)aniline, where (x = 5,6 and y = 6,7,8,8a) abbreviated (x,y)-chromen isomers. The calculations revealed that E chalcones are the most stable and the 4-(x,y-dichloro-8aH-chromen-2-yl) aniline isomers are the least stable. The (3,5) chalcones were the most stable in both E and Z chalcone series. However, the 4-(5,8a-dichloro-8aH-chromen-2-yl) aniline is the most stable in the series. The isomer stability order is the same as in Part 1, in which the geometry optimization calculation was followed by the dispersion correction single point energy calculation (GO/SPDC) procedure. The procedures (GO + DC) and (GO/SPDC) were used to calculate energies of the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest-unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and related properties. The order of the HOMO-LUMO energy gap (ΔE gap) was chromens

Abstract
A combined theoretical/experimental study of the photoreactivity of two flavylium-derived chalcones, 2,4,4'-trihydroxychalcone and 2,4'-dihydroxychalcone, at the multiconfigurational wavefunction level of theory (CASSCF//CASPT2) in vacuo and in an implicit solvent (water, treated as a polarisable continuum) and by means of linear absorption spectroscopy is presented. The photosensitivity of flavium salts is expressed in the ability of their chalcone form to undergo a cis-trans isomerisation which has found application in logical networks. Despite a considerable amount of experimental data documenting the dependence of the isomerisation on solvent, pH and temperature, the knowledge of how chalcones process energy under various conditions at the molecular level is still scarce. On the example of 2,4,4'-trihydroxychalcone we unravel the complex excited state deactivation mechanism in vacuo involving ultrafast decay through conical intersections, formation of twisted intramolecular charge transfer species, intramolecular proton transfer and inter system crossings. Furthermore, we rationalise the observed discrepancies in the linear absorption spectra of 2,4,4'-trihydroxychalcone and 2,4'-dihydroxychalcone, thereby establishing a link between the functionalisation pattern and the observed spectral properties.

Abstract
The present experimental and theoretical study on a new chromophore DMAMN of the type push-π-pull (push = dimethylaniline, π = imine, pull = 2-naphthoic acid), allows understanding of the mechanism by which the molecular conformational undergoes isomerization/rotomerization following electronic excitation. The steady-state fluorescence spectra of this compound, carried out in solvents of different polarities and proticities, showed significant changes in both the shape and peak positions. The wavelength and intensity change depend on the polarity and hydrogen-bonding environment. In highly polar solvents, the emission is weak and red-shifted compared to that for cyclohexane, but it is more red-shifted in moderate aprotic polar solvents. In hydroxyl solvents, a new weak low-energy emission band appears at ∼525 nm, attributed to the intermolecularly H-bonded open conformer. On the basis of the generated potential energy landscapes of the ground state and low-lying excited state in the gas phase and solution, we found that selective photon absorption, brings this molecule to a "bright" state, from which N═C isomerization Z → E, takes place. This isomerization in gas-phase and low-polarity solvents leads to two minima with a barrier, whereas in highly polar-protic media, it gives one minimum on the S1 surface with low ΔES1/T1 (0.17 eV), facilitating deactivation via ISC.

Abstract
One of the key concerns with the development of radical-generating reactive therapeutics is the ability to control the activation event within a biological environment. To that end, a series of quinoline-metal-loenediynes of the form M(QuiED)·2Cl (M = Cu(II), Fe(II), Mg(II), or Zn(II)) and their independently synthesized cyclized analogs have been prepared in an effort to elucidate Bergman cyclization (BC) reactivity differences in solution. HRMS(ESI) establishes a solution stoichiometry of 1:1 metal to ligand with coordination of one chloride counter ion to the metal center. EPR spectroscopy of Cu(QuiED)·2Cl and Cu (QuiBD)·2Cl denotes an axially-elongated tetragonal octahedron (g║ > g⊥ > 2.0023) with a dx2-y2 ground state, while the electronic absorption spectrum reveals a pπ Cl→Cu(II) LMCT feature at 19,000 cm -1, indicating a solution structure with three nitrogens and a chloride in the equatorial plane with the remaining quinoline nitrogen and solvent in the axial positions. Investigations into the BC activity reveal formation of the cyclized product from the Cu(II) and Fe(II) complexes after 12 h at 45 °C in solution, while no product is observed for the Mg(II) or Zn(II) complexes under identical conditions. The basis of this reactivity difference has been found to be a steric effect leading to metal-ligand bond elongation and thus, a retardation of solution reactivity. These results demonstrate how careful consideration of ligand and complex structure may allow for a degree of control and selective activation of these reactive agents.
