Abstract
OBJECTIVES Endocrinal variations within an individual impact the electrolyte composition, pH, and flow-rate (FR) of saliva. The aim of this study was to evaluate the gender-specific differences and the effect of combined estrogen-progestin oral contraceptives (COCs) on FR, pH, and electrolyte concentrations in the parotid saliva (PS) of a group of healthy adults. MATERIAL AND METHODS Stimulated PS was collected from 20 healthy adults using a Lashley cup; 11 males, 8 females, and 1 female undertaking combined contraceptive therapy (levonorgestrel/ethinyloestradiol 0.1 mg + 0.02 mg). FR and pH were recorded for each saliva sample. Electrolytes concentrations (Na+ , Ca2+ , K+ , Mg2+ ) were measured using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). Statistical analysis was performed, and the significance level was set at p < .05. RESULTS PS FR varied from 0.13 to 0.42 mL/min in females not taking any medication and from 0.08 to 0.5 mL/min in males not taking any medication. PS pH of females and males not taking any medication ranged from 6.23 to 7.50 and from 6.15 to 7.55. PS pH and FR of the female taking COCs were 6.5 and 0.1 mL/min. PS pH, FR, and electrolytes concentrations (Ca2+ , Na+ , K+ , Mg2+ ) were not statistically significantly different between females and males not taking any medication. PS concentrations of Ca2+ and Na+ were significantly higher in the females taking COCs than in the females not taking any medication. Whereas, concentrations of K+ and Mg2+ did not differ significantly between the females taking COCs and the females not taking any medication. CONCLUSIONS There are no significant gender-specific differences in PS flow rate, pH, and electrolyte concentrations of Na+ , Ca2+ , Mg2+ , and K+ . Combined hormonal oral contraceptive has a significant effect on PS flow rate, pH, Ca2+ , and Na+ concentrations. Whereas the PS concentration of K+ and Mg2+ are not influenced by COCs. These results warrant further investigation.

Abstract
Background/purpose Upregulation of B-cell specific Moloney murine leukemia virus insertion site 1 (BMI-1) has been involved in the invasion, metastasis, and poor prognosis of many cancers. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels and clinical significance of BMI-1 in saliva of patients with salivary adenoid cystic carcinoma (SACC), and to analyze biological function and mechanism of BMI-1 in the invasion and metastasis of SACC. Materials and methods The levels of BMI-1 in saliva and tumor tissues of SACC patients were determined. The correlation of salivary BMI-1 levels with clinicopathological parameters and clinical outcomes in patients with SACC was analyzed. Additionally, the effects of BMI-1 on wound-healing, transwell invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)-related protein expression in vitro as well as on tumorigenicity and experimental lung metastasis in vivo were investigated through exogenous overexpression and silencing of BMI-1 in SACC cells. Results BMI-1 levels increased in saliva and tumor tissues in SACC patients with invasion or metastasis. High salivary BMI-1 levels were correlated with poor TNM stage, poor overall survival, and disease-free survival. Exogenous expression of BMI-1 in SACC-83 promoted its migration and invasion, while silencing BMI-1 in SACC-LM inhibited its migration and invasion in vitro and suppressed tumorigenesis and lung metastasis in vivo. Furthermore, BMI-1 regulated the expression of EMT-related proteins in SACC. Conclusion Our study shows that BMI-1 can serve as a valuable biomarker to identify tumor invasion and metastasis in SACC, predict its prognosis, and act as a promising therapeutic target for SACC.

Abstract
A woman is susceptible to oral diseases at various stages in her life span. Besides, multiple biological, behavioral, and social factors affect the general health condition. Many drugs or chemicals can influence the oral cavity & associated structures. An example of these drugs group is oral contraceptive pills (OCS) which women widely use to prevent pregnancy and determine the number of children, and hormonal therapy. This study aims to evaluate the effect of oral contraceptive pills use on salivary secretion and composition in addition to the occurrence of any oral manifestations with the uses of these drugs among women aged 16-45 years. The total number of sample subjects is 51 women. The samples were separated into two groups: The first group included 21 unmarried women with no previous experience with oral contraceptive pills (control group).
In contrast, the second group consisted of 30 women who were married and using this drug (study group). This study is considered to be a comparative study between these two groups concerning the analysis of the salivary composition, unstimulated salivary flow rates and PH level: The results obtained from this study showed a marked significant difference in salivary analysis between the drug user & nonuser drug groups concerning the salivary flow rate while the PH had no statistical differences between them. However, the two groups had a significant difference in alkaline phosphatase enzyme. The salivary analysis showed highly substantial variations in immunoglobulin A (IgA) & total protein levels in saliva between control & study groups; also, in this study, there was a positive association between gingival inflammation with gingival index score (2) (80%), gingival index score (3) (100%) and duration for taking the drug. By this drug administration, the altered salivary flow rate & levels of salivary contents that include (secretary proteins, IgA and enzymes) may influence and play an essential role in oral & dental health.

Abstract
Differential HPA axis function has been proposed to underlie sex-differences in mental disorders; however, the impact of fluctuating sex hormones across the menstrual cycle on HPA axis activity is still unclear. This meta-analysis investigated basal cortisol concentrations as a marker for HPA axis activity across the menstrual cycle. Through a systematic literature search of five databases, 121 longitudinal studies were included, summarizing data of 2641 healthy, cycling participants between the ages of 18 and 45. The meta-analysis showed higher cortisol concentrations in the follicular vs. luteal phase (dSMC = 0.12, p =.004, [0.04 - 0.20]). Comparisons between more precise cycle phases were mostly insignificant, aside from higher concentrations in the menstrual vs. premenstrual phase (dSMC = 0.17, [0.02 - 0.33], p =.03). In all included studies, nine samples used established cortisol parameters to indicate HPA axis function, specifically diurnal profiles (k = 4) and the cortisol awakening response (CAR) (k = 5). Therefore, the meta-analysis highlights the need for more rigorous investigation of HPA axis activity and menstrual cycle phase.

Abstract
Female athletes have garnered considerable attention in the last few years as more and more women participate in sports events. However, despite the well-known repercussions of female sex hormones, few studies have investigated the specificities of elite female athletes. In this review, we present the current but still limited data on how normal menstrual phases, altered menstrual phases, and hormonal contraception affect both physical and cognitive performances in these elite athletes. To examine the implicated mechanisms, as well as the potential performances and health risks in this population, we then take a broader multidisciplinary approach and report on the causal/reciprocal relationships between hormonal status and mental and physical health in young (18-40 years) healthy females, both trained and untrained. We thus cover the research on both physiological and psychological variables, as well as on the Athlete Biological Passport used for anti-doping purposes. We consider the fairly frequent discrepancies and summarize the current knowledge in this new field of interest. Last, we conclude with some practical guidelines for eliciting improvements in physical and cognitive performance while minimizing the health risks for female athletes.

Abstract
Many zoo elephants do not cycle normally, and for African elephants, it is often associated with hyperprolactinemia. Dopamine agonists successfully treat hyperprolactinemia-induced ovarian dysfunction in women, but not elephants. The objective of this study was to determine how longitudinal dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin patterns in African elephants are related to ovarian cycle function. We hypothesized that dopamine concentrations are decreased, while oxytocin and serotonin are increased in non-cycling, hyperprolactinemic African elephants. Weekly urine and serum samples were collected for eight consecutive months from 28 female African elephants. Females were categorized as follows: (1) non-cycling with average prolactin concentrations of 15 ng/ml or greater (HIGH; n = 7); (2) non-cycling with average prolactin concentrations below 15 ng/ml (LOW; n = 13); and (3) cycling with normal progestagen and prolactin patterns (CYCLING; n = 8). Both oxytocin and serotonin were elevated in hyperprolactinemic elephants. Thus, we propose that stimulatory factors may play a role in the observed hyperprolactinemia in this species. Interestingly, rather than being reduced as hypothesized, urinary dopamine was elevated in hyperprolactinemic elephants compared to CYCLING and LOW prolactin groups. Despite its apparent lack of regulatory control over prolactin, this new evidence suggests that dopamine synthesis and secretion are not impaired in these elephants, and perhaps are augmented.

Abstract
Healthy women using contraceptives containing a low dose of an estrogen may have a higher serum concentration of cortisol (s-cortisol) and cortisol binding globulin (s-CBG) than the commonly used upper reference limits. There are no published reference intervals for s-cortisol, s-CBG, serum free cortisol index (s-FCI) or cortisol in saliva (sa-cortisol) for these women. The aim was to establish the above-mentioned reference intervals and document the differences in s-cortisol and s-CBG in one group of women using and another group not using ethinyl estradiol (EE). In this cross-sectional study, the reference limits presented were given as the 2.5 and 97.5 percentiles of the distribution of reference values in a population of 277 healthy volunteer women, aged 18-45 years. 157 women were not using any type of estrogen, while 120 women were using contraceptives containing a daily dose of 15-35 μg of EE. Serum and salivary cortisol, and serum CBG were measured using standard laboratory methods. S-FCI was calculated as s-cortisol/s-CBG. The reference intervals for s-cortisol in samples collected at 0800-1030 am in women using and not using EE contraception were: 284-994 nmol/L and 159-569 nmol/L respectively, and for s-CBG: 847-3366 nmol/L and 860-1940 nmol/L, respectively. For s-FCI and sa-cortisol, no clinically significant differences were found. Sa-cortisol may be the preferred measurand for evaluation of possible hypercortisolism in women using estrogens, since cortisol in saliva is not influenced by estrogen. If assessing morning s-cortisol and s-CBG in women using EE, we recommend using separate - and not the commonly used - reference intervals.

Abstract
The stress response differs between women using hormonal contraception and naturally cycling women. Yet, despite ample evidence showing that the stress response differs across the menstrual cycle in naturally cycling women, limited work has investigated whether the stress response differs across the hormonal contraceptive cycle, during which synthetic hormones are taken most of the month but not all of it. To induce a stress response, women using hormonal contraception completed the cold pressor test during either the active phase, when hormones are present, or during the inactive phase, when hormones are not present. Saliva was collected and assayed for free cortisol and progesterone levels prior to stress onset, immediately after stress termination, and 15-min post stress onset. Free cortisol and progesterone increased to a similar degree across both hormonal contraceptive phases in response to the cold pressor test. Post-hoc investigation indicates that the progestin “generation” (classification of synthetic progestins based on the compounds they are derived from) can differentially affect the free steroid response to cold pressor test stress, with the largest effects observed in women using formulations containing second-generation progestins. These findings indicate that progestin generation, particularly second-generation progestins, may have a more impactful influence on the stress response than hormonal contraceptive cycle phase. Potential mechanisms driving this effect and need for additional research are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Salivary secretion is an important parameter reflecting the health status of an individual and has been used clinically for the diagnosis of various oral diseases, such as xerostomia. Salivary metabolomic profiling is considered an emerging potential tool for the detection of various systemic diseases. To our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the quantitative relationship between salivary secretion volume and salivary metabolomic profile. METHODS To evaluate inter- and intra-day variations in salivary secretion, 234 saliva samples were collected three times per day for three days from 13 subjects and analyzed. Capillary electrophoresis-mass spectrometry was used for non-targeted quantification of water-soluble metabolites. RESULTS No significant inter- or intra-day variations were observed in salivary secretion volume. No significant inter-day variations were observed in metabolomic patterns. In contrast, significant intra-day variations were observed in salivary metabolomic profiles. The difference was more obvious for stimulated saliva than for unstimulated saliva. These profile changes were independent of salivary secretion volume. CONCLUSIONS Our results indicated that diurnal change had a greater effect on salivary metabolomic profiles than the other factors. Hence, sampling time should be tightly controlled to minimize unexpected bias in the clinical use of salivary metabolomics.

Abstract
Background Upregulation of heparanase has been reported in an increasing number of human cancer tissues. However, the level of salivary heparanase and its clinical significance in patients with salivary gland tumors remain unclear. Methods Salivary heparanase levels in patients with salivary gland tumors were detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) and the clinical significance was evaluated by analyzing the correlations among salivary heparanase levels, clinicopathological parameters, and clinical outcomes. Results The levels of salivary heparanase were significantly higher in patients with malignant salivary gland tumors than in benign tumors and normal controls (P<0.0001). High salivary heparanase levels were positively correlated with increased lymph node metastasis (P = 0.0235) and poorer tumor node metastasis stage (TNM) (P = 0.0183). Survival analyses revealed that high salivary heparanase levels were associated with worse overall survival (P = 0.0023) and disease-free survival (DFS) (P = 0.0025). Conclusions The study shows that salivary heparanase levels, as detected by the ELISAs, can be used to diagnose and provide an accurate prognosis for malignant salivary gland tumors. Salivary heparanase level was an independent predictor in patients with malignant salivary gland tumors.
