Abstract
Written language is increasingly important, as contemporary society strongly relies on text-based communication. Nonetheless, in neurosurgical practice, language preservation has classically focused on spoken language. The current study aimed to evaluate the potential role of intra-operative assessments in the preservation of written language skills in glioma patients undergoing awake surgery. It is the first feasibility study to use a standardized and detailed Written language battery in glioma patients undergoing awakening surgery. Reading and spelling were assessed pre- and post-operatively in eleven patients. Intra-operatively, 7 cases underwent written language assessment in addition to spoken object naming. Results show that reading and spelling deficits may arise before and after glioma surgery and that written language may be differently affected than spoken language. In our case series, task-specific preservation of function was obtained in all cases when a specific written language skill was monitored intra-operatively. However, the benefits of intra-operative testing did not always generalize, and non-monitored written language tasks may not be preserved. Hence, when a specific written language skill needs to be preserved, to facilitate return to work and maintain quality of life, results indicate that intra-operative assessment of that skill is advised. An illustrative case report demonstrates how profile analyses can be used pre-operatively to identify cognitive components at risk and intra-operatively to preserve written language abilities in clinical practice.

Abstract
Research regarding dysgraphia, an impairment in writing, is attaining more attention in recent times. The existing studies on dysgraphia draw insights from cognitive, behavioural, neurological, and genetic fields of knowledge. However, these multiple studies on dysgraphia fail to illustrate how these cognitive, behavioural, neurological, and genetic systems interact and intersect in dysgraphia. Therefore, the studies could not offer a comprehensive understanding of dysgraphia. In order to fill this gap, the review attempts to study dysgraphia using the notion of modularity by accommodating insights from cognitive, behavioural, neurological, and genetic aspects of dysgraphia. Such a profound understanding could facilitate an early diagnosis and holistic intervention towards dysgraphia.

Abstract
Language systems worldwide are based on either morphograms or phonograms, but Japanese is unique in that uses a complicated combination of kanji (morphogram) and kana (phonogram) characters. The white matter networks associated with reading have been investigated previously but remain incompletely understood. In this study, we performed intraoperative language mapping under local anesthesia and postoperative language assessments of 53 consecutive patients who underwent awake craniotomy for surgical resection of cerebral glioma within the dominant temporal or parietal lobe. Six cases showing intraoperative dyslexia elicited by direct electrical stimulation (DES) were examined, and all cases showed transient symptoms of kanji or kana dyslexia during DES. We investigated the intraoperative positive mapping points localized near four white matter bundles: the arcuate fascicle, posterior superior longitudinal fascicle, inferior fronto-occipital longitudinal fascicle, and inferior longitudinal fascicle (ILF). The intraoperative DES distributions for kanji dyslexia were especially associated with the anterior-inferior side of the ILF. On the other hand, the DES points associated with kana dyslexia were localized on the posterior-superior side of the complex composed of these four tracts. These results suggest the presence of specific non-interfering networks that subserve the processes of reading morphograms and phonograms.

Abstract
We report on developmental vowel dyslexia, a type of dyslexia that selectively affects the reading aloud of vowel letters. We identified this dyslexia in 55 Turkish-readers aged 9-10, and made an in-depth multiple-case analysis of the reading of 17 participants whose vowel dyslexia was relatively selective. These participants made significantly more vowel errors (vowel substitution, omission, migration, and addition) than age-matched controls, and significantly more errors in vowel letters than in consonants. Vowel harmony, a pivotal property of Turkish phonology, was intact and the majority of their vowel errors yielded harmonic responses. The transparent character of Turkish orthography indicates that vowel dyslexia is not related to ambiguity in vowel conversion. The dyslexia did not result from a deficit in the phonological-output stage, as the participants did not make vowel errors in nonword repetition or in repeating words they had read with a vowel error. The locus of the deficit was not in the orthographic-visual-analyzer either, as their same-different decision on words differing in vowels was intact, and so was their written-word comprehension. They made significantly more errors on nonwords than on words, indicating that their deficit was in vowel processing in the sublexical route. Given that their single-vowels conversion was intact, and that they showed an effect of the number of vowels, we conclude that their deficit is in a vowel-specific buffer in the sublexical route. They did not make vowel errors within suffixes, indicating that suffixes are converted as wholes in a separate sublexical sub-route. These results have theoretical implications for the dual-route model: they indicate that the sublexical route converts vowels and consonants separately, that the sublexical route includes a vowel buffer, and a separate morphological conversion route. The results also indicate that types of dyslexia can be detected in transparent languages given detailed error-analysis and dyslexia-relevant stimuli.

Abstract
Background: Tracking the white matter principal tracts is routinely typically included during the pre-surgery planning examinations and has revealed to limit functional resection of low-grade gliomas (LGGs) in eloquent areas. Objective: We examined the integrity of the Superior Longitudinal Fasciculus (SLF) and Inferior Fronto-Occipital Fasciculus (IFOF), both known to be part of the language-related network in patients with LGGs involving the temporo-insular cortex. In a comparative approach, we contrasted the main quantitative fiber tracking values in the tumoral (T) and healthy (H) hemispheres to test whether or not this ratio could discriminate amongst patients with different post-operative outcomes. Methods: Twenty-six patients with LGGs were included. We obtained quantitative fiber tracking values in the tumoral and healthy hemispheres and calculated the ratio (HIFOF–TIFOF)/HIFOF and the ratio (HSLF–TSLF)/HSLF on the number of streamlines. We analyzed how these values varied between patients with and without post-operative neurological outcomes and between patients with different post-operative Engel classes. Results: The ratio for both IFOF and SLF significantly differed between patient with and without post-operative neurological language deficits. No associations were found between white matter structural changes and post-operative seizure outcomes. Conclusions: Calculating the ratio on the number of streamlines and fractional anisotropy between the tumoral and the healthy hemispheres resulted to be a useful approach, which can prove to be useful during the pre-operative planning examination, as it gives a glimpse on the potential clinical outcomes in patients with LGGs involving the left temporo-insular cortex.

Abstract
There are few studies in literature reporting drawing as a strong trigger of praxis-induced focal seizures. The aim of the present case report was describing a case of focal epilepsy with praxis induced EEG activation, due to a cavernoma, in the left middle anterior temporal lobe by using a multimodal approach. We combined video-EEG, showing that drawing increased a sustained monomorphic delta activity localized on left anterior temporal region (F7-T1a), diffusing to the vertex (Fz) and the fronto-polar electrodes (F3), with DTI data, showing that the left uncinate fasciculus, connecting the temporal pole to the orbitofrontal cortex, significantly differed from controls. fMRI confirmed that drawing increased activation in these areas. The congruence between findings supports the role of the left uncinated fasciculus linking the temporal lobe to the orbitofrontal cortex in the present focal epilepsy mainly facilitated by drawing.

Abstract
We address existing controversies regarding neuroanatomical substrates of reading-aloud processes according to the dual-route processing models, in this particular instance in a series of 49 individuals with brain tumors who performed several reading tasks of real-time neuropsychological testing during surgery (low- to high-grade cerebral neoplasms involving the left hemisphere). We explored how reading abilities in individuals with brain tumors evolve during and after surgery for a brain tumor, and we studied the reading performance in a sample of 33 individuals in a 4-month follow-up after surgery. Impaired reading performance was seen pre-surgery in 7 individuals with brain tumors, intra-surgery in 18 individuals, at immediate post-surgery testing in 26 individuals, and at follow-up in 5 individuals. We classified their reading disorders according to operational criteria for either phonological or surface dyslexia. Neuroimaging results are discussed within the theoretical framework of the dual-route model of reading. Lesion-mask subtraction analyses revealed that areas selectively related with phonological dyslexia were located-along with the left hemisphere dorsal stream-in the Rolandic operculum, the inferior frontal gyrus, the precentral gyrus, the supramarginal gyrus, the insula (and/or the underlying external capsule), and parts of the superior longitudinal fasciculus, whereas lesions related to surface dyslexia involved the ventral stream, that is, the left middle and inferior temporal gyrus and parts of the left inferior longitudinal fasciculus.

Abstract
The study of brain connectomics has led to a rapid evolution in the understanding of human brain function. Traditional localizationist theories are being replaced by more accurate network, or hodologic, approaches that model brain function as widespread processes dependent on cortical and subcortical structures, as well as the white matter tracts (WMTs) that link these areas. Recent surgical literature suggests that WMTs may be more critical to preserve than cortical structures because of the comparably lower capacity of recovery of the former when damaged. Given the relevance of eloquent WMTs to neurologic function and thus quality of life, neurosurgical interventions must be tailored to maximize their preservation. Direct electric stimulation remains a vital tool for identification and avoidance of these critical tracts. Neurosurgeons therefore require proper understanding of the anatomy and function of WMTs, as well as the reported contemporary tasks used during intraoperative stimulation. We review the relevant tracts involved in language, visuospatial, and motor networks and the updated direct electric stimulation-based mapping tasks that aid in their preservation. The dominant-hemisphere language WMTs have been mapped using picture naming, semantic association, word repetition, reading, and writing tasks. For monitoring of vision and spatial functions, the modified picture naming and line bisection tasks, as well as the recording of visual evoked potentials, have been used. Repetitive movements and monitoring of motor evoked potentials and involuntary movements have been applied for preservation of the motor networks.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Continuous spike and waves during slow sleep (CSWS) is a typical EEG pattern defined as diffuse, bilateral and recently also unilateral or focal localization spike-wave occurring in slow sleep or non-rapid eye movement sleep. Literature results so far point out a progressive deterioration and decline of intellectual functioning in CSWS patients, i.e. a loss of previously normally acquired skills, as well as persistent neurobehavioral disorders, beyond seizure and EEG control. The objective of this study was to shed light on the neurobehavioral impact of CSWS and to identify the potential clinical risk factors for development. METHODS We conducted a retrospective study involving a series of 16 CSWS idiopathic patients age 3-16years, considering the entire duration of epilepsy from the onset to the outcome, i.e. remission of CSWS pattern. All patients were longitudinally assessed taking into account clinical (sex, age at onset, lateralization and localization of epileptiform abnormalities, spike wave index, number of antiepileptic drugs) and behavioral features. Intelligent Quotient (IQ) was measured in the whole sample, whereas visuo-spatial attention, visuo-motor skills, short term memory and academic abilities (reading and writing) were tested in 6 out of 16 patients. RESULTS Our results showed that the most vulnerable from an intellectual point of view were those children who had an early-onset of CSWS whereas those with later onset resulted less affected (p=0.004). Neuropsychological outcome was better than the behavioral one and the lexical-semantic route in reading and writing resulted more severely affected compared to the phonological route. CONCLUSIONS Cognitive deterioration is one but not the only consequence of CSWS. Especially with respect to verbal skills, CSWS is responsible of a pattern of consequences in terms of developmental hindrance, including slowing of development and stagnation, whereas deterioration is rare. Behavioral and academic problems tend to persist beyond epilepsy resolution.
