Electronic circular dichroism spectrum of uridine studied by the SAC–CI method

Assessing the Performance of DFT Functionals for Excited-State Properties of Pyridine-Thiophene Oligomers

In this article, we have examined the accuracy of various density functional theory (DFT) functionals to reproduce the absorption and CD spectra of pyridine-thiophene oligomers. The performance of different levels of approximations in DFT functionals is discussed with reference to the ADC(2) results. Starting from a linear system, like monomer, calculations are carried out at ADC(2) and DFT levels till a helical system, like pentamer, is formed. For vertical excitation energies, results obtained with functionals, like CAM-B3LYP, ωB97XD, and M06-2X, are closer to the ADC(2) results. However, analysis of excited-state properties shows that the state ordering patterns or results regarding natural transition orbitals from these DFT functionals sometimes differ from the ADC(2) results. Global hybrid functionals like B3LYP and PBE0 produce excitation energies which are far away from the ADC(2) benchmark results. Similarly, pure functionals and their long-range corrected versions produce either redshifted or blueshifted energies. For the CD spectra, the above three mentioned functionals, CAM-B3LYP, ωB97XD, and M06-2X, again produce spectra closer to the benchmark spectra.

Accuracy of Td-DFT in the Ultraviolet and Circular Dichroism Spectra of Deoxyguanosine and Uridine

Accuracy of the time-dependent density functional theory (Td-DFT) was examined for the ultraviolet (UV) and circular dichroism (CD) spectra of deoxyguanosine (dG) and uridine, using 11 different DFT functionals and two different basis sets. The Td-DFT results of the UV and CD spectra were strongly dependent on the functionals used. The basis-set dependence was observed only for the CD spectral calculations. For the UV spectra, the B3LYP and PBE0 functionals gave relatively good results. For the CD spectra, the B3LYP and PBE0 with 6-311G(d,p) basis gave relatively permissible result only for dG. The results of other functionals were difficult to be used for the studies of the UV and CD spectra, though the symmetry adapted cluster-configuration interaction (SAC-CI) method reproduced well the experimental spectra of these molecules. To obtain valuable information from the theoretical calculations of the UV and CD spectra, the theoretical tool must be able to reproduce correctly both of the intensities and peak positions of the UV and CD spectra. Then, we can analyze the reasons of the changes of the intensity and/or the peak position to clarify the chemistry involved. It is difficult to recommend Td-DFT as such tools of science, at least from the examinations using dG and uridine.

Excitation and circular dichroism spectra of (+)-(S,S)-bis(2-methylbutyl)chalcogenides

Theoretical electronic spectra and natural circular dichroism (CD) spectra of (+)-(S,S)-bis(2-methylbutyl)chalcogenides, Ch[CH₂CH(CH₃)C₂H₅]₂ (Ch = S, Se, and Te), were calculated by the symmetry adapted cluster (SAC) and SAC-configuration interaction (SAC-CI) methods. Whereas the calculated CD spectrum for each stable conformation itself did not reproduce the corresponding experimental one, their Boltzmann-averaged spectra showed good agreement with the experimental results. We provided the assignment for each spectral band according to our calculation results. For the telluride compound, temperature dependence of the CD spectra was experimentally observed due to variation in the Boltzmann factor, and our calculations reproduced it qualitatively. The spectral features that we could not reproduce can be attributed to triplet transitions through the spin-orbit interaction effects as well as accuracy incompleteness on the calculation conditions.

Excitation and circular dichroism spectra of (−)-(3aS, 7aS)-2-chalcogena-trans-hydrindans(Ch = S, Se, Te): SAC and SAC-CI calculations

The ground and several electronic excited states of (3aS,7aS)-2-chalcogena-trans-hydrindans were calculated by the symmetry adapted cluster (SAC) and SAC-configuration interaction (SAC-CI) methods. Theoretical electronic excitation spectra and natural circular dichroism (CD) spectra were obtained for these compounds, and the calculated spectra showed good agreement with the experimental ones reported by Laur (Proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Organic Selenium and Tellurium compounds, Metz, France, 1979, pp. 219-299). For all the chalcogen compounds, the first singlet excited states are assigned to n-sigma* and the other states are assigned to n-Rydberg in our calculations. It indicates that the spectra for the sulfide, selenide, and telluride are almost regarded as the analogues except for the red shifts of the band positions from the sulfide to the telluride. For the telluride, however, the experimental spectra have shapes that cannot be interpreted by the singlet excitations solely. Our calculations predict the triplet states that account for the spectral shapes, indicating importance of the spin-orbit interaction effects for the accurate reproduction of the experimental spectra of the telluride.
