Abstract
The photoconducting properties of platinum diimine-dithiolate complex [Pt(bipy)(Naph-edt)] (1; bipy = 2,2'-bipyridine; Naph-edt2- = 2-naphthylethylene-1,2-dithiolate) were investigated. DFT calculations on a model assembly with four complex units suggest that the high external quantum efficency measured on a prototype photodetector correlates with the intermolecular character of electronic excitations in the visible region.

Abstract
![]()
The reaction of the bis(1,2-dithiolene)
complex [Pd(Me2timdt)2] (1; Me2timdt•– = monoreduced 1,3-dimethyl-2,4,5-trithioxoimidazolidine)
with Br2 yielded the complex [Pd(Me2timdt)Br2] (2), which was reacted with Na2mnt
(mnt2– = 1,2-dicyano-1,2-ethylenedithiolate) to
give the
neutral mixed-ligand complex [Pd(Me2timdt)(mnt)] (3). Complex 3 shows an intense solvatochromic
near-infrared (NIR) absorption band falling between 955 nm in DMF
and 1060 nm in CHCl3 (ε = 10700 M–1 cm–1 in CHCl3). DFT calculations were
used to elucidate the electronic structure of complex 3 and to compare it with those of the corresponding homoleptic complexes 1 and [Pd(mnt)2] (4). An in-depth
comparison of calculated and experimental structural and vis–NIR
spectroscopic properties, supported by IEF-PCM TD-DFT and NBO calculations,
clearly points to a description of 3 as a dithione-dithiolato
complex. For the first time, a broken-symmetry (BS) procedure for
the evaluation of the singlet diradical character (DC) of heteroleptic
bis(1,2-dithiolene) complexes has been developed and applied to complex 3. The DC, predominant for 1 (nDC = 55.4%), provides a remarkable contribution
to the electronic structures of the ground states of both 3 and 4, showing a diradicaloid nature (nDC = 24.9% and 27.5%, respectively). The computational
approach developed here clearly shows that a rational design of the
DC of bis(1,2-ditiolene) metal complexes, and hence their linear and
nonlinear optical properties, can be achieved by a proper choice of
the 1,2-dithiolene ligands based on their electronic structure. The reaction of [Pd(Me2timdt)2] (1; Me2timdt•− = monoreduced
1,3-dimethyl-2,4,5-trithioxoimidazolidine) with Br2 yielded
[Pd(Me2timdt)Br2] (2), which was
reacted with Na2mnt (mnt2− = 1,2-dicyano-1,2-ethylenedithiolate)
to give [Pd(Me2timdt)(mnt)] (3), showing an
intense solvatochromic near-infrared (NIR) absorption band. The singlet
diradical character (DC), predominant for 1, provides
a remarkable contribution to the ground states of 3 and 4. A rational design of the DC of bis(1,2-dithiolene) complexes
can be achieved by a proper choice of the 1,2-dithiolene ligands.

Abstract
Metal bis(1,2-dithiolene) complexes belonging to the class [Ni(Ar-edt)2]x- [Ar-edt2- = arylethylene-1,2-dithiolate; Ar = phenyl, (1x-), 2-naphthyl (2x-); x = 0 and 1] were fully characterized by NMR, UV-visible-near-infrared (UV-vis-NIR), diffuse reflectance, and FT-IR spectroscopy, as well as cyclic voltammetry and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. These complexes have emerged as new photoconducting materials that allowed for the development of a prototype of photodetectors with response in the vis-NIR region. The photodetecting devices showed in some cases quantum efficiencies orders of magnitude higher than those of previously reported 1,2-dithiolene systems.

Abstract
The platinum salt C[PtL2], where C = [(R)-Ph(Me)HC*-NMe3](+) and [PtL2](-) = radical monoanion based on [4', 5': 5, 6][1, 4]dithiino[2,3-b]quinoxaline-1',3'dithiolato, shows a variety of properties both in solution and in the solid state thanks to the electronic and/or structural features of the ligand. The complex crystallizes in the chiral space group P1 due to the presence of the enantiopure cation (R)-Ph(Me)HC*-NMe3(+), and it shows paramagnetic behavior relatable to the [PtL2](-) radical monoanion. This anionic complex is redox active and shows a strong near-infrared absorbance peak at 1085 nm tunable with the oxidation state of the complex. This complex exhibits a proton-dependent emission at 572 nm in solution at room temperature. The excitation band corresponds to the HOMO-1 (π-orbitals of the S2C2S2 system) → LUMO (π-orbitals of the quinoxaline and benzene-like moieties) transition suggesting that emission is mainly ligand centered in character. The luminescent properties are highly unusual, since the emission falls well above the energy of the lowest energy absorption (anti-Kasha behavior). Joint experimental and density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT studies are discussed to provide a satisfactory structure/property relationship.

Abstract
Substitution of the halide ligands in (Bu4N)2[Mo3S7X6] (X = Cl, Br) by diimine ligands, such as 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (dmbpy), 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and 1,10-phenanthroline (phen), affords the neutral heteroleptic clusters Mo3S7Cl4(dmbpy) (), Mo3S7Br4(dmbpy) (), Mo3S7Br4(bpy) (), and Mo3S7Br4(phen) (). Further substitution of the halide ligands in Mo3S7Br4(diimine) clusters by dmit (1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate) allows the preparation of the mixed diimine-dithiolene neutral cluster complexes Mo3S7(dnbpy)(dmit)2 (, dnbpy = 4,4'-dinonyl-2,2'-bipyridine), Mo3S7(dcmbpy)(dmit)2 (, dcmbpy = 4,4'-dimethoxycarbonyl-2,2'-bipyridine), and Mo3S7(dcbpy)(dmit)2 (, dcbpy = 2,2'-bipyridine-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid). The optical limiting properties of complexes have been assessed by the open-aperture Z-scan technique at 570 nm, employing a nanosecond optical parametric oscillator. In order to investigate the effect of increasing the π-system, complexes , with the general formula Mo3S7X4(diimine), (X = Cl, Br), were compared to clusters , containing the dmit ligand. The influence of the metal content on the optical power limiting properties was also investigated by comparing the trinuclear series of complexes prepared herein with the bis(dithiolene) dinuclear cluster (Et4N)2[Mo2O2S2(BPyDTS2)2], which has been recently prepared by our group. All trinuclear clusters are efficient optical limiters (σeff > σ0) with the threshold limiting fluence F15% decreasing on proceeding from dinuclear to trinuclear clusters and, generally, on extending the π-system.

Abstract
A new homoleptic dithiolene tungsten complex, tris-{1,2-bis(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-1,2-ethylenodithiolene-S,S'}tungsten, was successfully synthesized via a reaction of the thiophosphate ester and sodium tungstate. The thiophosphate ester was prepared from 3,5-dimethoxybenzaldehyde via benzoin condensation to produce the intermediate 1,2-bis-(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-2-hydroxy-ethanone compound, followed by a reaction of the intermediate with phosphorus pentasulfide. FTIR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, 1H NMR and 13C NMR and elemental analysis confirmed the product as tris{1,2-bis-(3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-1,2-ethylenodithiolene-S,S'}tungsten with the molecular formula of C54H54O12S6W. Crystals of the product adopted a monoclinic system with space group of P2(1)/n, where a=12.756(2) Å, b=21.560(3) Å, c=24.980(4) Å and β=103.998(3)°. Three thioester ligands were attached to the tungsten as bidentate chelates to form a distorted octahedral geometry. Density functional theory calculations were performed to investigate the molecular properties in a generalized-gradient approximation framework system using Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof functions and a double numeric plus polarization basis set. The HOMO was concentrated on the phenyl ligands, while the LUMO was found along the W(S2C2)3 rings. The theoretical optical properties showed a slight blue shift in several low dielectric solvents. The solvatochromism effect was insignificant for high polar solvents.
