The scaled-charge additive force field for amino acid based ionic liquids

Accuracy limit of non-polarizable four-point water models: TIP4P/2005 vs OPC. Should water models reproduce the experimental dielectric constant?

The last generation of four center non-polarizable models of water can be divided into two groups: those reproducing the dielectric constant of water, as OPC, and those significantly underestimating its value, as TIP4P/2005. To evaluate the global performance of OPC and TIP4P/2005, we shall follow the test proposed by Vega and Abascal in 2011 evaluating about 40 properties to fairly address this comparison. The liquid-vapor and liquid-solid equilibria are computed, as well as the heat capacities, isothermal compressibilities, surface tensions, densities of different ice polymorphs, the density maximum, equations of state at high pressures, and transport properties. General aspects of the phase diagram are considered by comparing the ratios of different temperatures (namely, the temperature of maximum density, the melting temperature of hexagonal ice, and the critical temperature). The final scores are 7.2 for TIP4P/2005 and 6.3 for OPC. The results of this work strongly suggest that we have reached the limit of what can be achieved with non-polarizable models of water and that the attempt to reproduce the experimental dielectric constant deteriorates the global performance of the water force field. The reason is that the dielectric constant depends on two surfaces (potential energy and dipole moment surfaces), whereas in the absence of an electric field, all properties can be determined simply from just one surface (the potential energy surface). The consequences of the choice of the water model in the modeling of electrolytes in water are also discussed.

Tracing Local Nanostructure of the Aqueous Solutions of the Biocompatible [Cho][Gly] Ionic Liquid: Importance of Hydrogen Bond Attraction between Like-Charged Ions

The neat and aqueous solutions of the cholinium glycinate ionic liquid (IL), [Cho][Gly], at different water mole fractions, x_ws, are studied by molecular dynamics simulations. The changes in the local nanostructure of systems with composition have been determined by calculation of various structural distribution functions. Hydrogen bond (H-bond) attractions determine the major relative orientations of the oppositely and like charged nearest neighbors. The cation-anion H-bonds mainly form between the hydrogen of the hydroxyl or methyl groups of the cation and the carboxylate oxygen of the anion. A preferred (antiparallel) arrangement between adjacent [Cho]⁺ cations is due to the effective H-bond between the hydroxyl oxygen and the methyl hydrogen sites that promotes the like-charge cluster formation. Adding water decreases the occurrence probability of the [Cho]⁺···[Gly]^-···[Cho]⁺ bridge structure in the aqueous solutions due to the formation of the [Gly]^-···HOH···[Gly]^- structure via H-bonding. Observed density trend versus x_w is interpreted based on an interstice model and investigating the water cluster size distribution. Finally, the effect of x_w on the infrared (IR) vibrational spectra were studied and blue and red shifts were observed for the stretching and bending vibrational modes of the hydroxyl group of [Cho]⁺, respectively. Current findings will improve the efficient engineering design and task-specific applications of aqueous solutions of bio-ILs consist of [Cho]⁺ and amino acid anions.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Ionic Liquids and Electrolytes Using Polarizable Force Fields

Many applications in chemistry, biology, and energy storage/conversion research rely on molecular simulations to provide fundamental insight into structural and transport properties of materials with high ionic concentrations. Whether the system is comprised entirely of ions, like ionic liquids, or is a mixture of a polar solvent with a salt, e.g., liquid electrolytes for battery applications, the presence of ions in these materials results in strong local electric fields polarizing solvent molecules and large ions. To predict properties of such systems from molecular simulations often requires either explicit or mean-field inclusion of the influence of polarization on electrostatic interactions. In this manuscript, we review the pros and cons of different treatments of polarization ranging from the mean-field approaches to the most popular explicit polarization models in molecular dynamics simulations of ionic materials. For each method, we discuss their advantages and disadvantages and emphasize key assumptions as well as their adjustable parameters. Strategies for the development of polarizable models are presented with a specific focus on extracting atomic polarizabilities. Finally, we compare simulations using polarizable and nonpolarizable models for several classes of ionic systems, discussing the underlying physics that each approach includes or ignores, implications for implementation and computational efficiency, and the accuracy of properties predicted by these methods compared to experiments.

Storing Energy in Biodegradable Electrochemical Supercapacitors

The development of green and biodegradable electrical components is one of the main fronts of research to overcome the growing ecological problem related to the issue of electronic waste. At the same time, such devices are highly desirable in biomedical applications such as integrated bioelectronics, for which biocompatibility is also required. Supercapacitors for storage of electrochemical energy, designed only with biodegradable organic matter would contemplate both aspects, that is, they would be ecologically harmless after their service lifetime and would be an important component for applications in biomedical engineering. By means of atomistic simulations of molecular dynamics, we propose a supercapacitor whose electrodes are formed exclusively by self-organizing peptides and whose electrolyte is a green amino acid ionic liquid. Our results indicate that this supercapacitor has a high potential for energy storage with superior performance than conventional supercapacitors. In particular its capacity to store energy was estimated to be almost 20 times greater than an analogue one of planar metallic electrodes.

Photoswitching of Azobenzene-Based Reverse Micelles above and at Subzero Temperatures As Studied by NMR and Molecular Dynamics Simulations

We designed and studied the structure, dynamics, and photochemistry of photoswitchable reverse micelles (RMs) composed of azobenzene-containing ammonium amphiphile 1 and water in chloroform at room and subzero temperatures by NMR spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations. The NMR and diffusion coefficient analyses showed that micelles containing either the E or Z configuration of 1 are stable at room temperature. Depending on the water-to-surfactant molar ratio, the size of the RMs remains unchanged or is slightly reduced because of the partial loss of water from the micellar cores upon extensive E → Z or Z → E photoisomerization of the azobenzene group in 1. Upon freezing at 253 or 233 K, E-1 RMs partially precipitate from the solution but are redissolved upon warming whereas Z-1 RMs remain fully dissolved at all temperatures. Light-induced isomerization of 1 at low temperatures does not lead to the disintegration of RMs remaining in the solution; however, its scope is influenced by a precipitation process. To obtain a deeper molecular view of RMs, their structure was characterized by MD simulations. It is shown that RMs allow for amphiphile isomerization without causing any immediate significant structural changes in the micelles.

Sodium-ion electrolytes based on ionic liquids: a role of cation-anion hydrogen bonding

Recent success of the sodium-ion batteries fosters an academic interest for their investigation. Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) constitute universal solvents providing non-volatility and non-flammability to electrolytes. In the present work, we consider four families of RTILs as prospective solvents for NaBF4 and NaNO3 with an inorganic salt concentration of 25 and 50 mol%. We propose a methodology to rate RTILs according to their solvation capability using parameters of the computed radial distribution functions. Hydrogen bonds between the cations and the anions of RTILs were found to indirectly favor sodium solvation, irrespective of the particular RTIL and its concentration. The best performance was recorded in the case of cholinium nitrate. The reported observations and correlations of ionic structures and properties offer important assistance to an emerging field of sodium-ion batteries. Graphical Abstract Sodium-ion electrolytes.

Enhanced stability of the model mini-protein in amino acid ionic liquids and their aqueous solutions

Using molecular dynamics simulations, the structure of model mini-protein was thoroughly characterized in the imidazolium-based amino acid ionic liquids and their aqueous solutions. Complete substitution of water by organic cations and anions further results in hindered conformational flexibility of the mini-protein. This observation suggests that amino acid-based ionic liquids are able to defend proteins from thermally induced denaturation. We show by means of radial distributions that the mini-protein is efficiently solvated by both solvents due to a good mutual miscibility. Amino acid-based anions prevail in the first coordination sphere of positively charged sites of the mini-protein whereas water molecules prevail in the first coordination sphere of negatively charged sites of the mini-protein.

Computational approaches to understanding reaction outcomes of organic processes in ionic liquids

The utility of using a combined experimental and computational approach for understanding ionic liquid media, and their effect on reaction outcome, is highlighted through a number of case studies.
