Abstract
The research on superhalogens has successfully completed four decades. After their prediction in 1981 and experimental verification in 1999, such species have attracted attention due to their unusual structures and intriguing applications. Superhalogens are species whose electron affinity exceeds that of halogen or whose anions possess a larger vertical detachment energy than that of halides. Initially, these species were designed using s and p block atoms having a central electropositive atom as the core with excess electronegative atoms as ligands such as F, Cl, O etc. The last decade has witnessed enormous progress in the field of superhalogens. The transition metal atoms have played the role of the central core and a variety of new ligands have been explored. Further, new classes of superhalogens such as polynuclear superhalogens, magnetic superhalogens, aromatic superhalogens, etc. have been reported. The first application of superhalogens as strong oxidizers appeared much before their conceptualization. In the last decade, however, their applications have spanned a variety of fields such as energy storage, superacids, organic superconductors, ionic liquids, liquid crystals, etc. This makes research in the field of superhalogens truly interdisciplinary. This article is intended to highlight the progress on the design and applications of superhalogens in the last decade.

Abstract
Using a first-principles approach, we study the assembly of atomically-precise cluster solids with atomic precision. The aims are to create binary assemblies of clusters through charge transfer between neutral molecular clusters, and employing intercluster electrostatic attraction as a driving force for co-assembly. We combined pairs of complementary clusters in which one cluster is electron-donating (superalkali) and the other is electron-accepting (superhalogen). From the analysis of the binding energy between superatomic counterparts, charge transfer, and the relative size of the clusters, we analyze the resulting structures as either molecular crystals or superatomic lattices. We demonstrate that the substitution of a single atom can result in minor changes to the crystal structure of the binary solids or entirely new packing structures. The [N4Mg6Li]+[AlCl4]-, [N4Mg6Na]+[AlCl4]-, [N4Mg6K]+[AlCl4]-, [N4Mg6Li]+[AlF4]-, [N4Mg6Na]+[AlF4]-, and [N4Mg6K]+[AlF4]- compounds all form the same close-packed superatomic lattice structure through halogen bonding, with subtle differences in the orientation of the superatoms. These salts may also form molecular crystals where clusters are held to one another by electrostatic interactions. Our results emphasize how the structure of superatomic solids can be tuned upon single atom substitution.

Abstract
The Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction between 1,3-cyclohexadiene and a series of C60 fullerenes with encapsulated (super)alkali/(super)halogen species (Li+@C60, Li2F+@C60, Cl-@C60, and LiF2-@C60) was explored by means of DFT calculations. The reactivity of the ion encapsulating systems was compared to that of the parent C60 fullerene. Significant enhancement in reactivity was found for cation-encapsulating Li+/Li2F+@C60 complexes. The cycloadduct formed by LiF2-@C60 was found to be the most thermodynamically favorable among the studied ones. In contrast, encapsulation of Cl- anions disfavors the cycloaddition reaction both kinetically and thermodynamically. Higher activation energy barrier and less stability of the reaction product in the case of Cl-@C60 were associated with the higher deformation energies of the fullerene cage and the lower interaction energy between the reactants in comparison with the other studied complexes.

Abstract
Developing efficient catalysts for the conversion of CO2 into fuels and value-added chemicals is of great significance to relieve the growing energy crisis and global warming. With the assistance of DFT calculations, it was found that, different from Al12 X (X=Be, Al, and C), the alkali-metal-like superatom Al12 P prefers to combine with CO2 via a bidentate double oxygen coordination, yielding a stable Al12 P(η2 -O2 C) complex containing an activated radical anion of CO2 (i.e., CO2 .- ). Thereby, this compound could not only participate in the subsequent cycloaddition reaction with propylene oxide but also initiate the radical reaction with hydrogen gas to form high-value chemicals, revealing that Al12 P can play an important role in catalyzing these conversion reactions. Considering that Al12 P has been produced in laboratory and is capable of absorbing visible light to drive the activation and transformation of CO2 , it is anticipated that this work could guide the discovery of additional superatom catalysts for CO2 transformation and open up a new research field of superatom catalysis.

Abstract
Tris(2-methoxyethyl) fluoroborate anion (TMEFA), anovel tripodal ligand based on the BF4− superhalogen anion, is proposed and was investigated theoretically using ab initio MP2 (second-order Møller-Plesset perturbational method) and OVGF (outer valence Green function) methods. The studied molecule comprises three 2-methoxyethoxy groups (-O-CH2-CH2-O-CH3) connected to a central boron atom, which results in the C3-symmetry of the compound. The resulting anion was stable against fragmentation processes and its vertical electron detachment energy was found to be 5.72 eV. Due to its equilibrium structure resembling that of classical tripodal podands, the [F-B(O-CH2-CH2-O-CH3)3]− anion is capable of binding metal cations using its three arms, and thus may form strongly bound ionic complexes such as [F-B(O-CH2-CH2-O-CH3)3]−/Li+ and [F-B(O-CH2-CH2-O-CH3)3]−/Mg2+. The binding energies predicted for such compounds far exceed those of the similar neutral classical podand ligands, which likely makes the [F-B(O-CH2-CH2-O-CH3)3]− system a more effective molecular trap or steric shielding agent with respect to selected metal cations.

Abstract
The issue of stability of superhalogen anions in an aqueous solution is investigated on the basis of theoretical calculations carried out at the CCSD(T)/6-311++G(d,p)//MP2/6-311++G(d,p) level for two representative negatively charged systems (NaF2- and AlF4-) whose fragmentation products differ in polarity. The presence of a water solvent is simulated independently by employing the polarized continuum solvation model and by involving eight H2O molecules explicitly to allow interactions at the molecular level. The best estimates of the Gibbs free energies characterizing the AlF4- and NaF2- fragmentation reactions in a water solvent are evaluated as equal to 33-34 and 12-14 kcal/mol, respectively (assuming the F- and AlF3/NaF products) or 14-15 and 26-28 kcal/mol, respectively (assuming the HF and AlF3OH-/NaFOH- products). The corresponding fragmentation routes are suggested to be nonoperative at T = 298.15 K. The conclusion concerning the thermodynamic stability of the AlF4- and NaF2- superhalogen anions in the aqueous phase is formulated and discussed.

Abstract
The ability of a selected nanoparticle to form stable systems with superhalogens (i.e. AlF4, AlCl4, MgF3, MgCl3, LiF2, LiCl2, and LiI2) is examined on the basis of theoretical considerations supported by ab initio calculations. It is demonstrated that the C60 fullerene molecule should form stable and strongly bound (C60)˙(+)(superhalogen)(-) radical cation salts when combined with an appropriately chosen superhalogen radical (acting as an oxidizing agent). The conclusion is supported by providing: (i) the structural deformation of superhalogens and C60 nanoparticles upon ionization, (ii) predicted charge flow between the fullerene and each superhalogen (which allows estimating the amount of electron density withdrawn from the C60 molecule during the ionization process), (iii) the localization of the spin density distribution, and (iv) the interaction energies for the compounds obtained both at the B3LYP/6-31+G(d) level and at the B3LYP-D3/6-31+G(d) level. Solvent effects have been considered in the present study by means of the polarizable continuum model. It is found that the stability of C60/superhalogen species can be improved in solvents. We believe that the results provided in this contribution may likely be of prospective relevance in the future studies on the issue of binding and removal of this potentially risky nanoparticle.

Abstract
Hyperhalogens are a class of highly electronegative molecules whose electron affinities even exceed those of their superhalogen ligands. Such species can serve as new oxidizing agents, biocatalysts, and building blocks of unusual salts, and hence are important to the chemical industry. Utilizing stable N5(-) as the ligand, a series of aromatic hyperhalogen anions, namely mononuclear M(N5)(k+1)(-) (M = Li, Be, B) and dinuclear M2(N5)(2k+1)(-) (M = Li, Be), have been reported here for the first time. Calculation results based on the density functional theory revealed that all the N5(-) subunits preserve their structural and electronic integrity as well as aromatic characteristics in these anions. Especially, these anionic molecules exhibit larger vertical electron detachment energies (6.76-7.86 eV) than that of the superhalogen ligand N5(-), confirming their hyperhalogen nature. The stability of these studied anions is guaranteed by their large HOMO-LUMO gaps, and positive dissociation energies of predetermined fragmentation pathways. We hope this work will not only provide evidence of a new type of hyperhalogen molecule but also stimulate more research interest and efforts in the amazing superatom realm.
