How to set up and run a Bad Bugs Bookclub group

The Bad Bugs Bookclub is a public engagement initiative that enables scientists (microbiologists) and non-scientists to discuss the role of infectious disease and microorganisms in novels of fiction. The bookclub began in 2009, but since 2020, the meetings have taken place online, enabling international membership and occasional author participation. The bookclub has been shown, through peer-reviewed publications, to have impact and value to its members. For each book (the number now exceeds 100), a reading guide (questions to provoke discussion) and a meeting report (narrative of the discussion) were produced. Previously hosted on a website, the reading guides from this rich archive and resource are now presented alongside this paper, which provides tips on how to run a similar reading group.

Evaluating panel discussions in ESP classes: an exploration of international medical students' and ESP instructors' perspectives through qualitative research

This study investigates the effectiveness of panel discussions, a specific interactive teaching technique where a group of students leads a pre-planned, topic-focused discussion with audience participation, in English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses for international medical students. This approach aims to simulate professional conference discussions, preparing students for future academic and clinical environments where such skills are crucial. While traditional group presentations foster critical thinking and communication, a gap exists in understanding how medical students perceive the complexities of preparing for and participating in panel discussions within an ESP setting. This qualitative study investigates the perceived advantages and disadvantages of these discussions from the perspectives of both panelists (medical students) and the audience (peers). Additionally, the study explores potential improvements based on insights from ESP instructors. Utilizing a two-phase design involving reflection papers and focus group discussions, data were collected from 46 medical students and three ESP instructors. Thematic analysis revealed that panel discussions offer unique benefits compared to traditional presentations, including enhanced engagement and more dynamic skill development for both panelists and the audience. Panelists reported gains in personal and professional development, including honing critical thinking, communication, and presentation skills. The audience perceived these discussions as engaging learning experiences that fostered critical analysis and information synthesis. However, challenges such as academic workload and concerns about discussion quality were also identified. The study concludes that panel discussions, when implemented effectively, can be a valuable tool for enhancing critical thinking, communication skills, and subject matter knowledge in ESP courses for medical students. These skills are transferable and can benefit students in various academic and professional settings, including future participation in medical conferences. This research provides valuable insights for ESP instructors seeking to integrate panel discussions into their curriculum, ultimately improving student learning outcomes and preparing them for future success in professional communication.

A Scoping Review for Debate-Style Journal Clubs in Health Professional Education

OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this scoping review are to (1) describe the available literature regarding the utility of the debate-style journal club for health professional learners on literature evaluation skills and (2) report the themes found within debate-style journal club research and assessments in the context of professional education.

FINDINGS

A total of 27 articles written in the English language were included in this scoping review. Published evaluations of debate-style journal clubs have been predominantly based in the pharmacy profession (48%, n = 13), but are reported in other health professions, such as medicine (22%, n = 6), dentistry (15%, n = 4), nursing (7%, n = 2), occupational therapy (4%, n = 1), and physical therapy (4%, n = 1), as well. The skills assessed in these studies often included critical literature evaluation, application of literature to patient care, critical thinking, knowledge retention, use of supporting literature, and debate-specific skills. Learners typically reported better understanding and application of the literature, and enjoying the experience more than traditional journal clubs, but note the increased assessor and learner time requirement for debating. Pharmacy learner-specific articles more often utilized a traditional, team-based debate format, incorporated grading rubrics for skill assessment and debate performance, and included a grading component for the debate in the course.

SUMMARY

Debate-style journal clubs are well-received by learners but require an additional time commitment. Debate platforms, format, rubric use and validation, and outcome assessment vary across published reports.

Knowledge in Motion: A Comprehensive Review of Evidence-Based Human Kinetics

This comprehensive review examines critical aspects of evidence-based human kinetics, focusing on bridging the gap between scientific evidence and practical implementation. To bridge this gap, the development of tailored education and training programs is essential, providing practitioners with the expertise and skills to effectively apply evidence-based programs and interventions. The effectiveness of these programs in improving physical fitness across all age groups has been widely demonstrated. In addition, integrating artificial intelligence and the principles of slow science into evidence-based practice promises to identify gaps in knowledge and stimulate further research in human kinetics. The purpose of this review is to provide researchers and practitioners with comprehensive information on the application of scientific principles in human kinetics. By highlighting the importance of evidence-based practice, this review is intended to promote the adoption of effective interventions to optimize physical health and enhance performance.

The Effectiveness of a Journal Club for Improving Evidence-Based Medicine Skills and Confidence in Pre-clerkship Medical Students

Introduction

Evidence-based medicine (EBM) refers to medical practice that uses current best evidence to inform decision-making. This requires several skills including (1) creating an answerable question, (2) searching literature, (3) critically appraising evidence, and (4) applying results. Journal clubs are known to be effective in improving searching and critical appraisal skills in graduate medical education. In pre-clerkship medical education, journal clubs are used less often, and students often do not have the opportunity to engage in all of the steps above.

Methods

We developed a journal club for pre-clerkship students and measured its effectiveness using a pre-test, post-test design. Students attended 5 journal club sessions run by rotating student leaders and facilitated by faculty. Student groups developed searchable questions from clinical cases, searched the literature, located and critically appraised an article, and applied results to the case. We measured EBM skills and confidence using two validated questionnaires.

Results

Twenty-nine students (MS-1 and MS-2) completed the study. EBM confidence significantly improved at post-test with greatest improvements in the MS-1 student cohort. Confidence in developing a searchable question from a patient case significantly improved in both cohorts. There were no changes measured on the Test of EBM Knowledge and Skills.

Discussion

Participation in a faculty-mentored, student-led journal club improved confidence across all domains of EBM, primarily in MS-1 students. Journal clubs are positively received by pre-clerkship medical students and provide effective mechanisms to teach and promote all steps of EBM in pre-clerkship curricula.
