Abstract
The thorium bipyridyl metallocene (Cp3tBu)2Th(bipy) (1; Cp3tBu = η5-1,2,4-(Me3C)3C5H2) shows a rich reactivity toward a series of small molecules. For example, complex 1 may act as a synthon for the (Cp3tBu)2Th(II) fragment as illustrated by its reactivity toward to CuI, hydrazine derivative (PhNH)2, Ph2E2 (E = S, Se), elemental sulfur (S8) and selenium (Se), organic azides, CS2, and isothiocyanates. Moreover, in the presence of polar multiple bonds, such as those in ketones Ph2CO and (CH2)5CO, aldehydes p-MePhCHO and p-ClPhCHO, seleno-ketone (p-MeOPh)2CSe, nitriles PhCN, Ph2CHCN, C6H11CN, and p-(NC)2Ph, and benzoyl cyanide PhCOCN, C-C coupling occurs to furnish (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CO)] (10), (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy)((CH2)5CO)] (11), (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (12), (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy)(p-ClPhCHO)] (13), (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy){(p-MeOPh)2CSe}] (14), (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy)(PhCN)] (16), (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CHCN)] (17), (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy)(C6H11CN)] (18), [(Cp3tBu)2Th]2{μ-(bipy)[p-Ph(CN)2](bipy)} (20), and (Cp3tBu)2Th{(bipy)[PhC(CN)O]} (21), respectively. Nevertheless, ketazine (PhCH═N)2 or benzyl nitrile PhCH2CN forms the dimeric complexes [(Cp3tBu)Th]2[μ-NC(Ph)(bipy)]2 (15) and (Cp3tBu)2Th[(bipy){C(═CHPh)NH}] (19), respectively. In contrast, C-N bond cleavage and C-C coupling processes occur upon addition of isonitriles Me3CNC and C6H11NC to 1 to yield the thorium isocyanido amido complexes (Cp3tBu)2Th[4-(Me3C)bipy](NC) (22) and (Cp3tBu)2Th[4-(C6H11)bipy](NC) (23), respectively. Furthermore, a single-electron transfer (SET) process ensues when 1 equiv of CuI is added to 1 to yield the Th(VI) bipyridyl iodide complex (Cp3tBu)2Th(I)(bipy) (3).

Abstract
Halide exchange of (Cp3tms)2ThCl2 (1; Cp3tms = η5-1,2,4-(Me3Si)3C5H2) with Me3SiI furnishes (Cp3tms)2ThI2 (2), which is then reduced with potassium graphite (KC8) in the presence of 2,2'-bipyridine to give the thorium bipyridyl metallocene (Cp3tms)2Th(bipy) (3) in good yield. Complex 3 was fully characterized and readily reacted with various small molecules. For example, 3 may serve as a synthetic equivalent for the (Cp3tms)2Th(II) fragment when exposed to CuI, Ph2S2, organic azides, and CS2. Moreover, upon the addition of thiobenzophenone Ph2CS, p-methylbenzaldehyde (p-MeC6H4)CHO, benzophenone Ph2CO, amidate PhCONH(p-tolyl), seleno-ketone (p,p'-dimethoxy), selenobenzophenone (p-MeOPh)2CSe, di(p-tolyl)methanimine (p-tolyl)2C═NH, 1,2-di(benzylidene)hydrazine (PhCH═N)2, and nitriles PhCN, PhCH2CN, and Ph2CHCN C-C coupling results to give (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CS)] (8), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (9), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CO)] (10), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolylNH)(Ph)CO}] (11), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-MeOPh)2CSe}] (12), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy){(p-tolyl)2CNH}] (13), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (14), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCN)] (16), (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(PhCH2CN)] (17), and (Cp3tms)2Th[(bipy)(Ph2CHCN)] (18), respectively. However, when thiazole is added to 3, the dimeric sulfido complex [(Cp3tms)2Th]2[μ-(bipy)CH2NCHCHS]2 (15) can be isolated. Moreover, the addition of isonitriles such as Me3CNC and PhCH2NC to 3 results in C-N bond cleavage and C-C coupling processes to form the thorium isocyanido amido complexes (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(Me3C)bipy](NC) (19) and (Cp3tms)2Th[4-(PhCH2)bipy](NC) (20), respectively. Nevertheless, upon exposure of 3 to (trimethylsilyl)diazomethane Me3SiCHN2, the bis-amido complex (Cp3tms)2Th[5,6-(Me3SiCH)bipy] (21), concomitant with N2 release, is isolated.

Abstract
An N-aryloxide-amidine ligand (1), [ONNO] ligand, integrating phenoxide (PhO-) and amidine ligands through methylene linkers, was employed in actinide chemistry. Upon reaction of the deprotonated ligand with ThCl4(DME)2 in ether, the corresponding dimer complex 2 was obtained. Upon treatment of 2 with KCp* (Cp* = Cp(Me)5) in tetrahydrofuran, the corresponding {[ONNO]ThIVCp*(LiCl)}2 (4) was obtained. In complex 2, the two ArO- arms bonded from the same ligand to different ThIV centers. In contrast, both ArO- arms coordinated to the same metal center in 4. Notably, when a mixture of 2 and bipyridine was treated with one or two equiv of KC8, the [ONNO]ThIV-bipyridyl•̅ radical dimer complex (5) and [ONNO]ThIV-bipyridyl2- dianionic dimer species (6) were obtained, respectively.

Abstract
A family of thorium complexes featuring the redox-noninnocent pyridinediimine ligand MesPDIMe was synthesized, including (MesPDIMe)ThCl4 (1-Th), (MesPDIMe)ThCl3(THF) (2-Th), (MesPDIMe)ThCl2(THF)2 (3-Th) and [(MesPDIMe)Th(THF)]2 (5-Th) Full characterization of these species shows that these complexes feature MesPDIMe in four different oxidation states. The electronic structures of these complexes have been explored using 1H NMR and electronic absorption spectroscopies, X-ray crystallography, and SQUID magnetometry where appropriate.

Abstract
The ground state and photoinduced mixed valence states (GSMV and PIMV, respectively) of a dinuclear (Dp4+) ruthenium(II) complex bearing 2,2'-bipyridine ancillary ligands and a 2,2':4',4'':2'',2'''-quaterpyridine (Lp) bridging ligand were investigated using femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemistry and density functional theory. It was shown that the electronic coupling between the transiently light-generated Ru(II) and Ru(III) centers is HDA ∼ 450 cm-1 in the PIMV state, whereas the electrochemically generated GSMV state showed HDA ∼ 0 cm-1, despite virtually identical Ru-Ru distances. This stemmed from the changes in dihedral angles between the two bpy moieties of Lp, estimated at 30° and 4° for the GSMV and PIMV states, respectively, consistent with a through-bond rather than a through-space mechanism. Electronic coupling can be turned on by using visible light excitation, making Dp4+ a competitive candidate for photoswitching applications. A novel strategy to design photoinduced charge transfer molecular switches is proposed.

Abstract
The uranium bipyridyl metallocene, [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(bipy) (2), is readily accessible in good yield by adding potassium graphite (KC8) to a mixture of [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2UCl2 (1) and 2,2'-bipyridine. Compound 2 was fully characterized and employed for small-molecule activation. It has been demonstrated that 2 may serve as a synthon for [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(II) fragment in the presence of Ph2E2 (E = S, Se), alkynes, and a variety of hetero-unsaturated molecules such as diazabutadienes, azine (Ph2C═N)2, o-benzoquinone, pyridine N-oxide, CS2, isothiocyanates, and organic azides. However, upon exposure of 2 to thio-ketone Ph2CS, aldehyde p-MePhCHO, ketone Ph2CO, imine PhCH═NPh, azine (PhCH═N)2, and nitrile PhCN, it may also promote C-C coupling reactions forming [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(bipy)(Ph2CS)] (16), [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(bipy)(p-MePhCHO)] (17), [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(bipy)(Ph2CO)] (18), [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(bipy)(PhCHNPh)] (19), [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(bipy)(PhCHNN═CHPh)] (20), and [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U[(N2C10H7C(Ph)NH)] (22), respectively, in quantitative conversion. Furthermore, in the presence of CuI, a single-electron transfer (SET) process is observed to yield the uranium(III) iodide complex [η5-1,3-(Me3Si)2C5H3]2U(I)(bipy) (15).

Abstract
Modular tetraphenolate ligands tethered with a protective arene platform (para-phenyl or para-terphenyl) are used to support mononuclear An(IV) (An = Th, U) complexes with an exceptionally large and open axial coordination site at the metal. The base-free complexes and a series of neutral donor adducts were synthesized and characterized by spectroscopies and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Anionic Th(IV) -ate complexes with an additional axial aryloxide ligand were also synthesized and characterized. The para-phenyl-tethered mononuclear complexes exhibit rare An(IV)-arene interactions, and the An(IV)-arene distance broadly increases with axial donor strength. The para-terphenyl-tethered complexes have almost no interaction with the arene base, isolating the central metal cation. Computational analysis of the mononuclear complexes and their reduced analogues, and Yb(III) congeners, as well as the effect of additional donor ligand binding, seek to elucidate the electronic structure of the metal-arene interactions and establish whether they, or their reduced or oxidized counterparts, could function as molecular qubits.

Abstract
A series of thorium(IV) complexes featuring the redox-active 4,6-di-tert-butyl-N-(2,6-di-isopropylphenyl)-o-iminobenzoquinone (dippiq) ligand family have been synthesized and characterized. The neutral iminoquinone ligand was used to generate Th(dippiq)Cl4(dme)2 (1-iq) and Th(dippiq)2Cl4 (2-iq), both of which show dative bonds between the thorium(IV) ion and the ligands. One electron reduction of the ligand forms the unique tris(iminosemiquinone) complex, Th(dippisq)3Cl (3-isq), which features a radical in each ligand. Further reduction furnishes the amidophenolate species, Th(dippap)3]K2(THF)2 (4-ap), which has the ligands in their dianionic form. Attempts to sequester the potassium ions with cryptand resulted in the [Th(dippap)3K][K(crypt)] (4-ap mono crypt) and [Th(dippap)3][K(crypt)]2 (4-ap crypt) species. A bis(amidophenolate) complex was accessed by incorporating bulky triphenylphosphine oxide (OPPh3) ligands to generate Th(dippap)2(OPPh)3 (5-ap). Spectroscopic and structural characterization of each derivative established the +4 oxidation state for thorium with redox chemistry occurring at the ligands rather than the thorium ion. The reported 3-isq complex is unprecedented as it is the first tri(radical) thorium complex with the highest reported magnetic moment for a thorium species as characterized by SQUID magnetometry.

Abstract
Despite the vast array of η n -carbocyclic C5-8 complexes reported for actinides, cyclobutadienyl (C4) remain exceedingly rare, being restricted to six uranium examples. Here, overcoming the inherent challenges of installing highly reducing C4-ligands onto actinides when using polar starting materials such as halides, we report that reaction of [Th(η8-C8H8)2] with [K2{C4(SiMe3)4}] gives [{Th(η4-C4[SiMe3]4)(μ-η8-C8H8)(μ-η2-C8H8)(K[C6H5Me]2)}2{K(C6H5Me)}{K}] (1), a new type of heteroleptic actinocene. Quantum chemical calculations suggest that the thorium ion engages in π- and δ-bonding to the η4-cyclobutadienyl and η8-cyclooctatetraenyl ligands, respectively. Furthermore, the coordination sphere of this bent thorocene analogue is supplemented by an η2-cyclooctatetraenyl interaction, which calculations suggest is composed of σ- and π-symmetry donations from in-plane in- and out-of-phase C[double bond, length as m-dash]C 2p-orbital combinations to vacant thorium 6d orbitals. The characterisation data are consistent with this being a metal-alkene-type interaction that is integral to the bent structure and stability of this complex.

Abstract
Recent developments and results from the organometallic chemistry of the actinides are reviewed. In the last one and a half years the structural data of about 15 organometallic complexes of transuranium actinides (Np or Pu) have been published, all involving π-ligands in the coordination sphere of the metal ion. On the basis of these data, a comparison of these molecules is presented. Depending on the steric demands of the ligands, effects like the actinide contraction seem to be stronger or weaker in the structural features. This indicates that the interplay between the actinide ion and the π-ligand is rather flexible, enabling the formation of stable bonds over a broad range of actinide ion oxidation states.

Abstract
Thorium chalcogenolates Th(ER)4 react with 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) to form complexes with the stoichiometry (bipy)2Th(ER)4 (E = S, Se; R = Ph, C6F5). All four compounds have been isolated and characterized by spectroscopic methods and low-temperature single crystal X-ray diffraction. Two of the products, (bipy)2Th(SC6F5)4 and (bipy)2Th(SeC6F5)4, crystallize with lattice solvent, (bipy)2Th(SPh)4 crystallizes with no lattice solvent, and the selenolate (bipy)2Th(SePh)4 crystallizes in two phases, with and without lattice solvent. In all four compounds the available volume for coordination bounded by the two bipy ligands is large enough to allow significant conformational flexibility of thiolate or selenolate ligands. 77Se NMR confirms that the structures of the selenolate products are the same in pyridine solution and in the solid state. Attempts to prepare analogous derivatives with 2,2',6',2''-terpyridine (terpy) were successful only in the isolation of (terpy)(py)Th(SPh)4, the first terpy compound of thorium. These materials are thermochromic, with color attributed to ligand-to-ligand charge transfer excitations.

Abstract
The preparation of [3]thoro- and [3]uranocenophanes, the first structurally authenticated ansa-bridged complexes of actinocenes, is reported. Following a flytrap route, 1,2-bis(cyclooctatetraenyldimethylsilyl)methane was synthesized, reduced to its tetraanion, and subsequently converted into bridged uranocene and thorocene complexes by salt metathesis with the corresponding actinide tetrachlorides. In addition, their electronic structures have been investigated by experimental (UV/Vis spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry) and theoretical (DFT) methods.
