Insomnia is caused by a myriad of factors and can be very disruptive to a person's quality of life and health. When people see a health care provider, often a thorough assessment occurs and people are given various treatment options that include lifestyle interventions, medications, and/or cognitive behavior therapy. There are also many people that may choose to take over the counter or herbal medications as a remedy for insomnia. While there are many supplements that claim to have sleep benefits, clinical data supporting such claims are not always present. This article will briefly discuss the three most common herbal supplements taken for insomnia: melatonin, valerian, and lavender.

The effectiveness of aromatherapy in the management of labor pain: A meta-analysis

One non-pharmacological method that can be used to safely and without negative side effects is aromatherapy. This meta-analysis study was carried out to assess the effectiveness of aromatherapy in the treatment of labor pain. The analysis included 14 randomized controlled trials of aromatherapy interventions for labor pain. In the studies, it was observed that aromatherapy was applied through massage and inhalation using oils such as lavender, jasmine, rose, chamomile, bitter orange, and boswellia. In the meta-analysis, it was discovered that aromatherapy had a beneficial effect on the management of labor pain and reduced labor pain in the intervention group in 11 studies; it was found that there was no effect in 3 studies. According to analysis findings, aromatherapy significantly lessened the intensity of labor pain. The study's findings support the notion that aromatherapy can lessen labor pain.

The Effect of Reiki and Aromatherapy on Vital Signs, Oxygen Saturation, and Anxiety Level in Patients Undergoing Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy: A Randomized Controlled Study

This randomized controlled study aimed to determine the effect of Reiki and aromatherapy on vital signs, oxygen saturation, and anxiety level in patients undergoing upper gastrointestinal endoscopy. The sample consisted of 100 patients divided into Reiki (n = 34), aromatherapy (n = 33), and control (n = 33) groups. Data were collected 3 times (before, during, and after the procedure) using a descriptive characteristics questionnaire, a follow-up form, and the State Anxiety Subscale. The Reiki group had a mean State Anxiety Subscale score of 53.59 ± 2.98 and 43.94 ± 4.31 before and after the procedure, respectively. The aromatherapy group had a mean State Anxiety Subscale score of 54.03 ± 4.03 and 43.85 ± 3.91 before and after the procedure, respectively. The control group had a mean State Anxiety Subscale score of 38.79 ± 4.68 and 53.30 ± 7.26 before and after the procedure, respectively (P < .05). The results showed that the Reiki and aromatherapy groups had significantly lower State Anxiety Subscale scores than the control group after the procedure, indicating that Reiki and aromatherapy help reduce anxiety levels. There was a significant difference in the mean respiratory rates and oxygen saturation levels between the groups (P < .05). In conclusion, patients who do Reiki or undergo aromatherapy are less likely to experience anxiety before upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Benefit of inhalation aromatherapy as a complementary treatment for stress and anxiety in a clinical setting – A systematic review

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this systematic review is to ascertain the impact of inhalation aromatherapy on stress and anxiety in clinical settings.

METHODS

A search strategy was developed using various databases. Randomised Controlled Trials (RCTs) as well as single and double-blind pilot clinical studies (non-RCT) using inhalation aromatherapy with an essential oil blend or a single essential oil were examined. All studies included a control intervention and use of a validated measurement tool. The time period under review was years 2000-2021. Due to the high level of heterogeneity and element of bias, a narrative synthesis was conducted.

RESULTS

The search strategy initially retrieved 628 studies and through application of the selection criteria and the removal of duplicates, 76 studies were selected for review with a total of 6539 patients. In 42% of the RCTs, physiological measures including vital signs and/or salivary cortisol were used in addition to questionnaires. Over 70% of the studies reported a positive effect on anxiety levels in the aromatherapy intervention groups compared with the control. However, in many cases this is limited by the absence of safety data, imprecise reporting of plant species and dosage of essential oil.

CONCLUSION

Inhalation aromatherapy has the potential to reduce stress and anxiety with data emerging to further support this result across a wide modality of clinical treatments. However, there is a clear need for the development of standard protocols for research in this area, generating measurable results which will create the opportunity for more rigorous evidence-based outcomes.

Changes in Salivary Oxytocin Level of Term Pregnant Women after Aromatherapy Footbath for Spontaneous Labor Onset: A Non-Randomized Experimental Study

BACKGROUND

Aromatherapy is usually used to stimulate labor. However, its specific physiological effects have been scarcely examined. We evaluated whether an aromatherapy footbath increases oxytocin levels in term pregnant women.

METHODS

In this quasi-experimental study, low-risk term pregnant women in Japan underwent aromatherapy using a footbath (1) infused with clary sage and lavender essential oils, (2) infused with jasmine oil, or (3) with no infused oils (control group). The primary outcome was the salivary oxytocin level. The secondary outcomes were uterine contractions and cortisol levels.

RESULTS

In the clary sage and lavender group (n = 28), the oxytocin level increased significantly after the footbath (p = 0.035). The jasmine group (n = 27) and control group (n = 27) exhibited trends toward a respective increase and decrease in the oxytocin level; however, the changes in the oxytocin levels between the clary sage and lavender group and the control group showed no significance difference. There were no significant differences in the changes in the uterine contractions and cortisol levels between the experiment and control groups.

CONCLUSIONS

The changes in the oxytocin levels in the clary sage and lavender group did not differ significantly with those in the control group, possibly because of the small sample size. Further studies are required to examine the effects of repeated aromatherapy footbaths to stimulate labor.

Use of Lavandula angustifolia essential oil as a complementary therapy in adult health care: A scoping review

Background

In addition to its low toxicity risk, Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) essential oil is recognised worldwide for its sedative, antidepressant, antiseptic, antifungal, relaxing, and antiemetic properties. Thus, the action mechanism of lavender oil has attracted significant attention from researchers interested in improving the physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being of patients.

Objective

To investigate the scope of knowledge regarding the use of L. angustifolia essential oil as a complementary therapy in adult health care.

Methods

A scoping review was carried out using a PRISMA-ScR checklist followed by a critical assessment being performed using the Joanna Briggs Institute level of evidence. The following databases were used: SCOPUS, MEDLINE/PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, SCIELO, Cochrane Library, LILACS, Wiley Online Library, CAPES, and FIOCRUZ Dissertations.

Results

Eighty-three articles published between 2002 and 2022 were selected for the analysis; More articles came from Iran than from any other country and most articles reported clinical trials. The applicability of lavender essential oil and its route of administration in different clinical situations were the main topics addressed in the articles.

Conclusions

Most studies demonstrate the efficacy of L. angustifolia Mill. essential oil in relieving pain and decreasing anxiety. Few studies evaluated the anti-psoriatic, anti-toxoplasmotic, and wound healing properties and the protective actions against cerebral ischemia. One study reported on its safety, specifically the allergenic potential of linalool, the main chemical component of L. angustifolia essential oil. However, most studies did not involve the extensive investigations on this topic or report the safe quantities of this oil for human treatment, meaning further research into the safety of this treatment is required.

Determining the effect of inhalation and lavender essential oil massage therapy on the severity of perceived labor pain in primiparous women: A randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

This research aimed to reveal the effect of lavender essence inhalation and the massage therapy applied with lavender oil on the severity of labor pain of primiparous women.

METHODS

This randomized controlled trial was conducted with three groups. Pregnant women participating in the study were randomly divided into control group (n=40), lavender essence inhalation group (n=44) and lavender essence massage (n=37) groups. The applications were divided in three for each phase in the first stage of labor (early, active and transition). Thereafter sacral compression and circular massage were applied for 15 minutes on the lower back (waist) region of the participants by using 2 drops of lavender oil in each phase of labor; 2 drops of lavender oil were dripped onto the palms of the participants in the inhalation group by the researcher and they were asked to inhale it for 3 minutes. Research data were collected using Personal Information Form (PIF), Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Postpartum Assessment of Women Survey (PAWS).

RESULTS

The results of the research revealed that the labor pain perceived by the women who were applied inhalation and massage therapy using lavender essential oil were milder compared to the control group (p<0.05). Another finding of the research revealed that the lavender oil inhalation gave the best results in the latent phase, however the massage therapy with lavender oil was more effective in the active and transition phases.

CONCLUSION

Inhalation and massage therapy applied using lavender essential oil contributed to the alleviation of perceived labor pain. For this reason, massage therapy and inhalation applications using lavender oil are recommended to be applied by midwives as a complementary method to adapt to labor pain during delivery.

A comparison of the effect of Swedish massage with and without chamomile oil on labor outcomes and maternal satisfaction of the childbirth process: a randomized controlled trial

PURPOSE OF STUDY

Massage is widely used as a traditional technique during labor and delivery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Swedish massage with and without chamomile oil on delivery outcomes.

METHODS

The present study was a randomized clinical trial on 154 primiparous pregnant women who were selected by random sampling method and divided into 3 groups: massage with chamomile oil (n = 53), massage without chamomile oil (n = 51), and control group (n = 50). Data collection tools included demographic and delivery information questionnaire, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), maternal satisfaction with delivery scale, and Partograph form. In the two intervention groups, Swedish massage techniques (i.e., Effleurage, Petrissage, Vibration, and Superficial stroke) were performed with and without the use of chamomile oil since the active phase of labor (5 cm dilatation), while the control group received only routine labor care during labor.

RESULTS

Swedish massage with chamomile oil significantly reduced the labor pain score, reduced the length of active phase and the second stage of labor, and increased the score of maternal satisfaction with the labor process (P < 0.001). In addition, there was a significant relationship between the type of study groups and the type of delivery (P < 0.043).

CONCLUSION

The results of the study showed that using Swedish massage techniques with or without chamomile oil can improve labor outcomes. Swedish massage using chamomile oil was associated with better results compared to the same massage without using chamomile oil. Clinical trial code IRCT20200513047430N1.

Effectiveness of aromatherapy in reducing duration of labour: a systematic review

Childbirth is one of the most important events in woman's life. Different methods are typically used for labour augmentation. Aromatherapy is one of the complementary methods. The present systematic review evaluated the efficacy of aromatherapy in reducing the duration of labour. A systematic search of all clinical trials studies on Cochrane, Scopus, Web of Science, PubMed, ProQuest, Google scholar, Irandoc, Science direct, Magiran and Sid was performed up to September 2021. A total of 22 articles met the inclusion criteria and 3234 women used a variety of aromatherapies. Results showed that some aromatherapies, such as lavender was almost effective in reducing length of labour. Results suggest that some aromatherapy can be an effective, inexpensive and holistic method of reducing the duration of labour but it should be used with caution.

Analysis of the Use of Herbal Therapy to Reduce Labor Pain (Literature Review)

Abstract Background:.   labor pain can stress the mother and cause pain impulses to multiply and potentially weaken uterine muscle contractions. Pain can cause distress to the baby. One way to reduce pain is by giving herbal therapy or aromatherapy. Aromatherapy is one of the non-pharmacological methods to reduce labor pain. Aromatherapy often used to reduce labor pain is Lavender, Rose, Jasmine, Citrus Aurantium.   AIM: This study aims to determine the use of herbal therapy to reduce labor pain.The purpose of this study is to analyze the challenges in implementing health education in elementary schools in Banda Aceh   Methods: the design in this study was a literature review article. Search for articles using relevant ones obtained from data based on Pubmed, Proquest, Ebsco, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar in the past ten years (2011–2021) received 121 articles. Results: The study results show several challenges in implementing health education. Lack of understanding about School Health Services, School Health Services is not considered a strategic program, Low attention from policymakers, School Health Services Program has not been understood as part of the national target, Implementation of UKS program in schools is only a formality, Implementation and development School Health Services program is not evenly distributed. Barriers to the Implementation of School Health Services in  Elementary School are the lack of optimal inter-sectoral cooperation, lack of trained personnel, high workload, and the impact of conflicting health issues, causing various School Health Services activities to be hampered in their Implementation   CONCLUSION: Utilization of herbal therapies such as Lavender, Mawar, Jasmine, Citrus, Aurantium has been proven to reduce labor pain which can be used in various methods such as inhalation, bath, massage, and foot soak. The easy use of aromatherapy can be an alternative to reduce labor pain.

Development and Study of Ezzence: A Modular Scent Wearable to Improve Wellbeing in Home Sleep Environments

Ezzence is the first smartphone-controlled olfactometer designed for both day and night conditions. We discuss the design and technical implementation of Ezzence and report on a study to evaluate the feasibility of using the device in home-based sleep environments. The study results (N = 40) show that participants were satisfied with the device and found it easy to use. Furthermore, participants reported a significant improvement in sleep quality when using the device with scent in comparison to the control condition (p = 0.003), as well as better mood the following morning (p = 0.038) and shorter time to sleep onset (p = 0.008). The device is integrated with a wearable EEG and real-time sleep staging algorithm to release scent during specific sleep stages (N1, N2, N3, and REM), which is important for certain use cases (e.g., to study the effect of scent on REM dreams, or to improve memory consolidation with a re-exposure of scent during N2 and N3). Ezzence can be used for several applications, including those that require scent triggered day and night. They include targeted memory reactivation, longitudinal health treatments, therapy, and mental or physical exercises. Finally, this article proposes an interaction framework to understand relationships between scents and environments based on proxemic dimensions and passive or active interactions during sleep.

The Effectiveness of Neroli Essential Oil in Relieving Anxiety and Perceived Pain in Women during Labor: A Randomized Controlled Trial

Childbirth is a stressful and physically painful event in a woman’s life and aromatherapy is one of the most used non-pharmacological methods that is effective in reducing anxiety and perceived pain. This randomized controlled study aimed at determining the effect of neroli oil aromatherapy on anxiety and pain intensity perception in 88 women during labor, randomly assigned to either an intervention group (n = 44) or control group (n = 44). Anxiety and perceived pain were assessed through the visual analogue scale during the latent, early, and late active phases of labor. Data analyses included the t-test, Chi-square test, and repeated measures ANOVA. Perceived pain and anxiety in the group receiving aromatherapy were significantly lower than in the control group at all stages of labor (p < 0.05). Specifically, as the labor progressed, pain and anxiety increased in all participants, but the increase was milder in the experimental group than in the control group. The multiparas showed higher average anxiety scores, but not perceived pain, than the primiparas in all phases of labor (p < 0.05). Ultimately, neroli oil aromatherapy during labor can be used as an alternative tool to relieve anxiety and perceived pain in women during all stages of labor.

Effectiveness of nonpharmacological interventions for reducing postpartum fatigue: a meta-analysis

BACKGROUND

Postpartum fatigue is the most common issue among postnatal women and it could not only seriously affect the health of mothers but also bring about adverse impacts on their offspring. This meta-analysis aims to synthesize nonpharmacological evidence and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions for reducing postpartum fatigue among puerperae.

METHODS

The Cochrane Library, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CINAHL and ProQuest databases were searched for papers published from inception until June 2021. Grey literature was searched using OpenGrey. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or controlled clinical trials (CCTs) evaluating nonpharmacological interventions conducted during 0 ~ 78 weeks postpartum for fatigue reduction were eligible for inclusion. The methodological quality of the included studies was independently assessed by two reviewers using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool and the risk of bias in nonrandomized studies of interventions. Cohen's kappa coefficient was used to measure inter-rater agreement. The meta-analysis was conducted using Review Manager 5.3.

RESULTS

Seventeen published clinical trials matched the eligibility criteria and ten studies involving 1194 participants were included in this meta-analysis. The intervention start time varied from immediately postpartum care to 1 year after delivery, and duration ranged from 1 day to 3 months. The results revealed that exercise (SMD = - 1.74, 95% CI = -2.61 to - 0.88) and drinking tea (MD = - 3.12, 95% CI = -5.44 to - 0.80) resulted in significant improvements in women's postpartum fatigue at postintervention. Drinking tea may have beneficial effects on depression (MD = - 2.89, 95% CI = -4.30 to - 1.49). Positive effects of psychoeducational interventions on postpartum fatigue or depression were not observed. Physical therapies including mother-infant skin-to-skin contact, taking warm showers and breathing lavender oil aroma were used for reducing postpartum fatigue. No significant risk of publication bias was found. Small number of included studies and sample sizes, not time-matched conditions of control groups, high heterogeneity and the risk of bias within the included studies were the main limitations of our review.

CONCLUSIONS

This review provides evidence that exercise and drinking tea may be effective nonpharmacological interventions for relieving postpartum fatigue. More effective and targeted exercise programs need to be further studied. Rigorous RCTs of drinking tea are needed. Caution is required when interpreting the findings due to the limitations of our study. Further studies are still needed to validate our findings and increase confidence in the results.

LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL FOR SPINAL PAIN IN OBESE WOMEN: A CLINICAL TRIAL

ABSTRACT Objective To analyze the effect of lavender essential oil associated with massage on spinal pain levels in obese women. Methods The sample included 49 obese women, between 20 and 60 years of age, randomly assigned to three groups: control (n=15), intervention (n=19) and placebo (n=15). The intervention and placebo groups were submitted to eight 35-minute sessions, twice a week for one month, but the essential oil of Lavandula angustifolia was used only in the intervention group. A placebo was used for the placebo group and the control group received no intervention. Pain levels were measured before and after the intervention using the Visual Analog Scale. Results There was a significant decrease in total spinal pain (p=0.004), in the cervical region (p=0.003) and in the lumbar region (p=0.008) in the intervention group. Conclusion Lavender essential oil had a positive impact on the reduction of pain in the spine of obese women, as well as in the specific areas of the cervical and lumbar regions compared to the control and placebo groups. Labor Pain in Different Dilatations of the Cervix and Apgar Scores Affected by Aromatherapy: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Labor pain (LP), as a physiological process, is known as one of the most severe pains. Aromatherapy is one of the methods to reduce LP in the first phase of labor. It is an important approach for enjoyable birth and decreases the severity of pain in today's society. Accordingly, this study aimed to systematically review the relieving effect of aromatherapy in LP and Apgar score. We used international databases such as EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, PubMed, Cochrane Library, ProQuest, and clinicaltrials.gov to conduct a systematic search for all relevant articles. Cochran's Q-test and I² statistic were applied to assess heterogeneity, a random-effects model was used to estimate the unstandardized mean difference (UMD), and a meta-regression method was utilized to investigate the factors affecting heterogeneity between studies. A total of 27 studies were included in the meta-analysis (sample size: 2,566). Overall, aromatherapy leads to relieving LP during delivery (UMD: 1.75; 95% CI: 1.13-2.37). Based on cervix dilation, aromatherapy significantly affects LP when cervix dilation is 8-10 cm (UMD: 6.18; 95% CI: 4.51-7.85) and 0-4 cm (UMD: 5.31; 95% CI: 3.74-6.87); but it had no effects on 1- and 5-min Apgar scores. No publication bias was observed (P=0.113). Mother's age, publication year, sample size, and cervix dilation had no significant effects on heterogeneity (P>0.05). Aromatherapy had a positive impact on relieving LP, and the greatest and least effect was witnessed in dilatation of 8-10 cm and 0-4 cm, respectively. Moreover, it had no effects on 1- and 5-min Apgar scores.

Effect of Massage With Lavender Oil on Postoperative Pain Level of Patients Who Underwent Gynecologic Surgery: A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Study

This was a randomized, placebo-controlled study. The sample consisted of 3 groups of patients: an experimental group, massage application with lavender oil (n = 15); a placebo group, massage application with ultrasound gel (n = 15); and a control group (n = 15). Massage application was performed 3 hours after analgesic application. Pain levels of the patients in the experiment and placebo groups were evaluated with a Verbal Rating Scale (VRS) at the 30th minute and the 3rd hour after the application. Similarly, the pain level of patients in the control group was also evaluated with the VRS at 3 hours after the initial analgesic administration and following the 30th minute and the 3rd hour. Generally, the VRS scores of the 3 groups did not show a significant difference in terms of group and time interaction (P = .221). However, there was a significant difference in VRS scores between the experimental and control groups at the 30th minute after the massage (P = .036). This difference was caused by the lower pain level of the group, which had massage with lavender (2.66 ± .89) compared with the control group (3.80 ± 1.01). According to the study results, while only hand massage application after gynecologic surgery was effective for a short period in decreasing postoperative pain, it was determined that massage application with lavender had a longer effect in decreasing postoperative pain. The results of this study showed that this inexpensive and easy-to-apply method can be safely performed by nurses on postoperative patients and can support pain management of patients in the first hours after gynecologic surgery.

The Effect of Showing Images of the Foetus with the Virtual Reality Glass During Labour Process on Labour Pain, Birth Perception and Anxiety

AIM AND OBJECTIVES

This study was conducted to determine the effect of showing images of the foetus to the pregnant women with the virtual reality glass during labour process on labour pain, childbirth perception and anxiety level.

BACKGROUND

Virtual reality is an effective and inexpensive method that allows the creation of simulated scenarios in which it interacts with the virtual environment with multisensory stimuli.

DESIGN

This is a randomised controlled experimental study. This study was conducted with the guidelines of Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT). The study was enrolled in the Clinical Trials database (NCT04664114).

METHODS

The study included 100 pregnant women (50 intervention group and 50 control group). Ultrasound images of the foetus were recorded on the 28th week of pregnancy of the women in the intervention group. These images were shown to the women with the virtual reality glass during labour process. Routine procedures were carried out for the women in the control group. The Visual Analog Scale (VAS) was applied to both groups when cervical dilatation was 4 cm and 9 cm. The Women's Perception for the Scale of Supportive Care Given During Labor (POBS) and the Perinatal Anxiety Screening Scale (PASS) were applied almost two hours after labour.

RESULTS

The VAS scores of the women in the intervention group with 9 cm dilatation and their PASS mean scores were significantly lower than women in the control group while their POBS score were significantly higher (p < 0.01).

CONCLUSION

The results of this study show that showing images of the foetus to women with virtual reality decreased labour pain and anxiety level.

RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE

It is known that supportive care given during labour is important both for the mother's and baby's health. Therefore, it is important that nurses and midwives, who spend the most time with women and provide the most support, reduce the pain and anxiety of the woman with nonpharmacological practices and make them feel positive feelings about delivery.

Is aromatherapy effective in obstetrics? A systematic review and meta-analysis

The aim of this systematic review is to collect clinical trials conducted using essential oils (EOs) in obstetric symptoms by evaluating if and in which context the aromatherapy practice is effective in obstetrics. The research was conducted by using the databases of EMBASE, Medline, Biosis and Toxcenter, PubMed, and Google Scholar search engine, selecting articles from January 2004 to July 2020. This study was performed according to the MOOSE and PRISMA guidelines. Only the randomized clinical trials were considered, and in cases of multiple publications, it was considered the most up to date information. Biases were highlighted. In the presence of homogeneous data, pooling statistics and meta-analysis were applied. The research led to 71 articles, 17 of which were eligible. Among the trials selected, eight investigated the effectiveness of EOs on anxiety, depression, and stress. Two concerned the treatment of nausea and vomiting, six evaluated the application of EOs on labor for pain treatment, and two showed the effectiveness in the treatment of episiotomy. The heterogeneity of works carried out so far has made it possible to develop a meta-analysis only in the field of pain treatment during childbirth, identifying the effectiveness of the EOs Lavandula spp. and Rosa damascena.

Effect of Regiosacralis Counterpressure Treatment on the Pain and Interleukin-6 Levels Among Primigravid Mothers During the First Stage Labor

BACKGROUND

Severe pain experienced by mother during the labor can cause fear and anxiety which can interfere with the overall labor process. Controlling pain during the labor process is important. Regiosacralis counterpressure pain management without altering the interleukin-6 (IL-6) level is expected to reduce the pain.

OBJECTIVE

This study was aimed to investigate the effects of regiosacralis counterpressure on the pain and IL-6 levels during the first stage of labor among primigravid mothers.

METHOD

A quasiexperiment method with pretest–posttest control group design was applied. Regiosacralis counter-pressure pain management was applied to all study participants who non-randomly recruited by consecutive sampling methods. A total of 52 primigravid mothers were selected and divided into both the intervention group (n = 26) and the control group (n = 26).

RESULT

The statistical analysis of the intervention on the pain and IL-6 level revealed a significant difference between the pretest and posttest in the intervention group (p < .001; M pretest pain = 8.96 ± .528; M posttest pain = 6.96 ± .774; M pretest IL-6 = 175.539 ± 92.281; M posttest IL-6 = 170,764 ± 70,026).

CONCLUSION

Regiosacralis counterpressure treatment is effective in controlling and reducing the pain level during the first stage labor.

Comparing the Effects of Massage Therapy and Aromatherapy on Knee Pain, Morning Stiffness, Daily Life Function, and Quality of Life in Patients with Knee Osteoarthritis

BACKGROUND

Knee osteoarthritis is the most common articular disease, and non-medical treatment of this disease has attracted the attention of researchers. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of aromatherapy and massage therapy on knee pain, morning stiffness, daily life function, and quality of life in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

METHODS

This is a clinical trial. In this study, 93 patients referred to the Imam Ali Hospital (Physical Therapy Clinic) who entered the study were randomly divided into three groups including massage therapy (n = 31), aromatherapy (n = 31), and the control (n = 31). The data gathering tools were a demographic characteristics questionnaire and the Knee Injury and Osteoarthritis Outcome Score (KOOS) questionnaire. The questionnaire was completed before intervention and at the 5th and 10th sessions after intervention in all three groups. Data were analyzed by SPSS software version 20, and Chi-square, Fisher's exact test, repeated measures test, one-way ANOVA test, and Tukey's post hoc test were used for analysis.

RESULTS

The study shows that mean score subscale Symptoms and dryness in the 5th session and 10th session of intervention in the aromatherapy group is significantly higher than in the control group (p < 0.05). The massage therapy group had the highest pain score at the beginning of the intervention, but at the end of the 10th session of intervention had the least pain score. Mean score subscale Performance of daily life in the 5th session and 10th session of intervention in the aromatherapy group is significantly higher than in the control group (p < 0.05). Mean score in the subscale Performance, exercise, and recreational activities significantly differs between the aroma therapy and massage therapy groups compared with the control group in all times of interventions (p < 0.05), and in the mean score in the subscale Quality of life, there is no significant difference between the groups in all times of interventions (p > 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The use of both massage therapy and aromatherapy is recommended for patients with knee osteoarthritis. Interventions should be prolonged for at least 6 months in patients so their effects appear on the patient.

The Effect of Lavender (Lavandula stoechas L.) on Reducing Labor Pain: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Background

Labor pain is one of the most severe pains, which most of women experience. By using novel supportive methods, the labor pain can be reduced, which makes this event pleasant and delightful. Several original studies have been conducted in regard to the effect of lavender on reducing labor pain, whose results are controversial. One of the applications of meta-analysis studies is to respond to these hypotheses and remove controversies; therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of lavender on labor pain in Iran by using meta-analysis.

Methods

In this study, to find published articles electronically from 2006 to 2019, the published articles in national and international databases of SID, MagIran, IranMedex, IranDoc, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, Embase, ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science (ISI) were used. Heterogenic index between studies was determined by Cochrane test (Q)c and I ². Due to heterogeneity, the random effects model was used to estimate standardize difference of the mean score of lavender test in order to assess the labor pain between intervention and control group.

Results

In this meta-analysis and systematic review, finally 13 eligible articles met the inclusion criteria of the study. The sample size from original studies enrolled in the meta-analysis entered in the intervention group was 794 individuals and in the control group was 795 individuals. Mean score for pain in the control group was 7.2 ± 0.42 and in the intervention group was 5.4 ± 0.58 and this difference was statistically significant (p ≤ 0.001).

Conclusion

The results of this study showed that lavender can reduce labor pain, which can be considered by health policy makers and gynecologists.

Reducing Labor Pain Intensity within First Stage Active Phase through Hegu LI 4 Acupressure and Quranic Recital Method

Introduction: Labor pain is one of the greatest pains experienced by a woman in their life. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of acupressure and Quranic recital on labor pain reduction.Methods: The study design uses quasi-experiment with comparison between pretest and posttest on non-equivalent control group. Samples were as many as 30 laboring mothers in each group, totaling 60 samples who had been chosen through consecutive sampling technique. The labor pain was assessed through the NRS (Numeric Rating Scale) then analyzed univariately with mean and standard deviation, followed by independent T-sample statistical test such as bivariate analysis.Results: The average pain reduction score in the Hegu LI 4 acupressure group was higher than the Quranic recital of Surah Ar-Rahman group. The acupressure group average pain reduction was 3.03 ± 0.718 while the Quranic recital group was 2.57 ± 1.006. The difference in the average score of independent T-test was significant with the P < 0.007 and 95% C.I. -0.919-( -0.015)Conclusion: Hegu LI 4 acupressure and Quranic recital of Surah Ar-Rahman treatments were promising and may be utilized to reduce labor pain intensity within labor’s first stage active phase. Hegu LI 4 acupressure group   had a greater reduction in labor pain intensity than the Quranic recital of Surah Ar-Rahman group. This study suggests that Hegu LI 4 can be utilized to reduce labor pain as a non-pharmacological therapy.

Olfaction Modulates Inter-Subject Correlation of Neural Responses

Odors can be powerful stimulants. It is well-established that odors provide strong cues for recall of locations, people and events. The effects of specific scents on other cognitive functions are less well-established. We hypothesized that scents with different odor qualities will have a different effect on attention. To assess attention, we used Inter-Subject Correlation of the EEG because this metric is strongly modulated by attentional engagement with natural audiovisual stimuli. We predicted that scents known to be "energizing" would increase Inter-Subject Correlation during watching of videos as compared to "calming" scents. In a first experiment, we confirmed this for eucalyptol and linalool while participants watched animated autobiographical narratives. The result was replicated in a second experiment, but did not generalize to limonene, also considered an "energizing" odorant. In a third, double-blind experiment, we tested a battery of scents including single molecules, as well as mixtures, as participants watched various short video clips. We found a varying effect of odor on Inter-Subject Correlation across the various scents. This study provides a basis for reliably and reproducibly assessing effects of odors on brain activity. Future research is needed to further explore the effect of scent-based up-modulation in engagement on learning and memory performance. Educators, product developers and fragrance brands might also benefit from such objective neurophysiological measures.

The Effectiveness of Aromatherapy in the Management of Labor Pain and Anxiety: A Systematic Review

BACKGROUND

Aromatherapy as an alternative and complementary medicine is a well-known method for reducing the symptoms of various physiological processes such as labor experience. The aim of this study was to systematically review the currently available evidences evaluating the use of aromatherapy for management of labor pain and anxiety.

METHODS

In a systematic review, 5 databases (PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Scientific Information Database [SID]) were searched, from database inception up to December 2019. Keywords used included (aromatherapy OR ""essential oil" OR "aroma*") AND (pain OR anxiety) AND (labor OR delivery). Using the Cochrane Collaboration's 'Risk of bias' method; the risk of bias in the included studies was evaluated.

RESULTS

A total of 33 studies were verified to meet our inclusion criteria. Most of the included studies were conducted in Iran. Aromatherapy was applied using inhalation, massage, footbath, birthing pool, acupressure, and compress. The most popularly used essential oil in the studies was lavender (13 studies), either as a single essential oil or in a combination with other essential oils. Most of included studies confirmed the positive effect of aromatherapy in reducing labor pain and anxiety.

CONCLUSION

The evidences from this study suggest that aromatherapy, as a complementary and alternative modality, can help in relieving maternal anxiety and pain during labor.

Effects of ear and body acupressure on labor pain and duration of labor active phase: A randomized controlled trial

OBJECTIVES

This study sought to compare the effects of multi-point ear and body acupressure on labor pain and the duration of labor active phase.

DESIGN

Three-armed randomized controlled trial.

SETTING

Kowsar Hospital, Qazvin, Iran.

INTERVENTION

Participants in the body acupressure group received acupressure on GB21, GB30, BL32, LI4, and SP6 points, each for two minutes, at cervical dilation of four, six, and eight centimeters. For participants in the ear acupressure group, adhesive auriculotherapy-specific Vaccaria seeds were attached to their auricles on the zero, genitalia, Shen Men, thalamic, and uterine 1 and 2 acupoints. The seeds were compressed every thirty minutes, each time for thirty seconds. Participants in the control group received routine care services.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Labor pain intensity was assessed using a visual analogue scale at cervical dilation of four and ten centimeters.

RESULTS

While there was no significant difference between mean scores of pain among three groups, mean score of labor pain in both acupressure groups was significantly less than that in the control group (P < 0.001). However, the difference between the acupressure groups was not statistically significant (P = 0.12). Moreover, the duration of labor active phase in the ear acupressure group was significantly less than those in the body acupressure and the control groups (P < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Ear acupressure was significantly effective in reducing labor pain and shortening labor active phase. However, body acupressure solely reduces labor pain. Therefore, ear acupressure can be used to reduce labor pain and shorten labor active phase.

Comparing the effect of auricular acupressure and body acupressure on pain and duration of the first stage of labor: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

Labor pain is one of the leading causes of fear of childbirth. Acupressure is a non-pharmacological pain relief method that has shown promising results in relieving this pain. The present study is designed to compare the effects of body acupressure at multiple points and auricular acupressure on the pain and duration of labor.

METHODS/DESIGN

In a randomized controlled trial, 90 primigravida women who attend for childbirth will be randomly assigned to one of three groups (intervention groups of either body acupressure or auricular acupressure; control, consisting of routine care). Computer-generated six-block randomization techniques will be used to determine the allocation sequence with a 1:1:1 ratio. To hide the allocation, the type of intervention will be written according to the generated sequence and put in opaque envelopes; these as well as questionnaires will be encoded. The pain score for all participants will be measured at the peak uterine contraction at 4-cm cervical dilation and at 10-cm dilation based on a visual analog scale (VAS). The duration of the active phase of labor in these groups will be recorded too. Data will be imported into SPSS-16 software. First, normality of the data distribution will be investigated. To compare labor duration among the research groups, ANOVA will be used, which will be followed, in case of significance, by the Scheffe post hoc test. Furthermore, Chi-squared test will be used to compare the categorized demographic variables and ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis tests will be used to compare the quantitative variables in the studied groups. A significance level of 0.05 is considered significant.

DISCUSSION

In this study the effect of auricular acupressure and body acupressure on pain and duration of first stage of labor will be compared.

BioEssence: A Wearable Olfactory Display that Monitors Cardio-respiratory Information to Support Mental Wellbeing

This work introduces a novel wearable olfactory display that provides just-in-time release of scents based on the physiological state of the wearer. The device can release up to three scents and passively captures subtle chest vibrations associated with the beating of the heart and respiration through clothes.BioEssenceiscontrolledviaacustom-madesmartphone app that allows the creation of physiological rules to trigger different scents (e.g., when the heart rate is above 80 beats per minute, release lavender scent). The device is wireless and lightweight, and it is designed to be used during daily life, clipped on clothes around the sternum area or used as a necklace. We provide a description of the design and implementation of the prototype and potential use cases in the context of mental wellbeing.

Effects of Aromatherapy on Pain and Anxiety Scores in Adult Patients Admitted to a Community Hospital on the Medical Unit or Telemetry Unit: A Pilot Study

The purpose of the study was to determine the impact of aromatherapy intervention on pain and anxiety. The hypothesis was that the use of aromatherapy will improve pain and anxiety scores when assessed within 30 to 60 minutes of administration. The study design was a prospective comparison of aromatherapy using a pre-/postdesign study. A convenience sample of patients was recruited from both a medical unit and a telemetry unit with patients aged 18+ years from a 182-bed acute care Magnet community hospital. Pain and anxiety levels were assessed prior to administration of a medication, within 60 minutes of receiving pain medication, and within 60 minutes of receiving aromatherapy. Ninety-six percent of the participants would use aromatherapy if offered again, would use it in the future, and would recommend its use to family and friends. Both pain and anxiety improved after the aromatherapy with a P value of <.0001. This pilot study demonstrated that aromatherapy is safe and effective at reducing pain and anxiety and should be considered as a valuable adjunct to symptom management.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.) Essential Oil Alleviates Neuropathic Pain in Mice With Spared Nerve Injury

Low treatment efficacy represents an important unmet need in neuropathic pain patients and there is an urgent need to develop a more effective pharmacotherapy. An increasing number of patients choose complementary medicine to relieve pain. Lavender essential oil (LEO) is approved by the European Medicines Agency as herbal medicine to relieve anxiety and stress. However, the capability of LEO to relieve other nervous system disorders such as neuropathic pain has never been established. Our work aimed to evaluate the antineuropathic properties of lavender on a spared nerve injury (SNI) model of neuropathic pain in mice. An acute oral administration of LEO (100 mg/kg) alleviated SNI-induced mechanical allodynia, evaluated in the von Frey test, with an intensity comparable to the reference drug pregabalin. Investigations into the mechanism of action showed that LEO markedly decreased the phosphorylation of ERK1, ERK2, and JNK1, and decreased the levels of iNOS in the spinal cord; involvement of the endocannabinoid system was also detected using in vitro inhibition of the FAAH and MALG enzymes as well as in vivo experiments with the CB1 antagonist. Conversely, no effect on P38 phosphorylation and NF-kB activation was detected. These antihyperalgesic effects appeared at the same dose able to induce antidepressant-like, anxiolytic-like, and anorexic effects. In addition, gavage with LEO did not significantly alter animals' gross behavior, motor coordination, or locomotor activity, nor impaired memory functions. Oral administration of LEO could represent a therapeutic approach in the management of neuropathic pain states.

Effect of led photobiomodulation on analgesia during labor: Study protocol for a randomized clinical trial

BACKGROUND

Labor pain is one of the most intense pains experienced by women, which leads to an increase in the number of women opting to undergo a cesarean delivery. Pharmacological and nonpharmacological analgesia methods are used to control labor pain. Epidural analgesia is the most commonly used pharmacological analgesia method. However, it may have side effects on the fetus and the mother. Light-emitting diode (LED) photobiomodulation is an effective and noninvasive alternative to pharmacological methods.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the effects of LED photobiomodulation on analgesia during labor.

METHODS

In total, 60 women in labor admitted to a public maternity hospital will be selected for a randomized controlled trial. The participants will be randomized into 2 groups: intervention group [analgesia with LED therapy (n = 30)] and control group [analgesia with bath therapy (n = 30)]. The perception of pain will be assessed using the visual analogue scale (VAS), with a score from 0 to 10 at baseline, that is, before the intervention. In both the groups, the procedures will last 10 minutes and will be performed at 3 time points during labor: during cervical dilation of 4 to 5 cm, 6 to 7 cm, and 8 to 9 cm. At all 3 time points, pain perception will be evaluated using VAS shortly after the intervention. In addition, the evaluation of membrane characteristics (intact or damaged), heart rate, uterine dynamics, and cardiotocography will be performed at all time points.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

The use of LED photobiomodulation will have an analgesic effect superior to that of the bath therapy.

Pain Management in Obstetrics

Critical care clinicians may be called on to care for a laboring woman. Comprehension of the anatomic changes associated with pregnancy, and labor and birth, is essential. A working knowledge of the current options for pain management in labor, both pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic, is necessary to facilitate patient-centered care. Pharmacologic options include intravenous or intramuscular agents, inhalational agents, and neuraxial anesthesia. Each modality has contraindications, risks, and benefits that must be considered when choosing the most appropriate method.

Effect of inhalation aromatherapy with lavender essence on pain associated with intravenous catheter insertion in preschool children: A quasi-experimental study

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of inhalation aromatherapy with lavender essence on the pain severity of intravenous catheter insertion in hospitalized preschool children.

METHOD

A quasi-experimental study involving 60 participants using convenience sampling were assigned to control (n = 30) and aromatherapy (n = 30) groups. Children in the aromatherapy group inhaled 5 drops of the essence, while children in the control group inhaled 5 drops of distilled water, 20 min before venipuncture. Pain severity was measured using OUCHER scale 10 min after catheterization.

RESULTS

Mean of pain severity between the aromatherapy and control groups demonstrated a significant difference immediately (P = 0.002) and 5 (P = 0.001) and 10 min (P = 0.01) after intravenous catheter insertion. Mean of pain severity in the three assessed time points had significant differences in aromatherapy and control groups (P = 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Aromatherapy with Lavender essence helped to reduce pain severity of intravenous catheter insertion in children.
