Science of perception, decision making and fatigue in the maritime industry

In this paper, we investigate how perception, decision making and fatigue affect safety in the maritime industry. With maritime safety incidents often having disastrous effects on the lives of the seafarers, the natural environment, and the industry as a whole, a better understanding of the science behind the human errors is necessary to increase safety at sea. We conducted interviews and real time observations of seafarers, and we combine our findings with a review of relevant academic literature with the aim of using scientific knowledge to address a real-world problem. We conclude that the seafarers consistently work at the limits of their cognitive abilities and that better care for their wellbeing is crucial for safety at sea. It is hoped that this study will be beneficial to the practitioners in the field of the maritime industry as well as psychologists studying the effects of long term, high cognitive loads in the work environment.

Spatial uniformity in the power-grid system

Robust synchronization is indispensable for stable operation of a power grid. Recently, it has been reported that a large number of decentralized generators, rather than a small number of large power plants, provide enhanced synchronization together with greater robustness against structural failures. In this paper, we systematically control the spatial uniformity of the geographical distribution of generators and conclude that the more uniformly generators are distributed, the more enhanced synchronization occurs. In the presence of temporal failures of power sources, we observe that spatial uniformity helps the power grid to recover stationarity in a shorter time. We also discuss practical implications of our results in designing the structure of a power-grid network.

Finite-time and finite-size scaling of the Kuramoto oscillators

Phase transition in its strict sense can only be observed in an infinite system, for which equilibration takes an infinitely long time at criticality. In numerical simulations, we are often limited both by the finiteness of the system size and by the finiteness of the observation time scale. We propose that one can overcome this barrier by measuring the nonequilibrium temporal relaxation for finite systems and by applying the finite-time-finite-size scaling (FTFSS) which systematically uses two scaling variables, one temporal and the other spatial. The FTFSS method yields a smooth scaling surface, and the conventional finite-size scaling curves can be viewed as proper cross sections of the surface. The validity of our FTFSS method is tested for the synchronization transition of Kuramoto models in the globally coupled structure and in the small-world network structure. Our FTFSS method is also applied to the Monte Carlo dynamics of the globally coupled q-state clock model.

Abiotic stress and the plant circadian clock

In this review, we focus on the interaction between the circadian clock of higher plants to that of metabolic and physiological processes that coordinate growth and performance under a predictable, albeit changing environment. In this, the phytochrome and cryptochrome photoreceptors have shown to be important, but not essential for oscillator control under diurnal cycles of light and dark. From this foundation, we will examine how emerging findings have firmly linked the circadian clock, as a central mediator in the coordination of metabolism, to maintain homeostasis. This occurs by oscillator synchronization of global transcription, which leads to a dynamic control of a host of physiological processes. These include the determination of the levels of primary and secondary metabolites, and the anticipation of future environmental stresses, such as mid-day drought and midnight coldness. Interestingly, metabolic and stress cues themselves appear to feedback on oscillator function. In such a way, the circadian clock of plants and abiotic-stress tolerance appear to be firmly interconnected processes.

A systematic survey in Arabidopsis thaliana of transcription factors that modulate circadian parameters

BACKGROUND

Plant circadian systems regulate various biological processes in harmony with daily environmental changes. In Arabidopsis thaliana, the underlying clock mechanism is comprised of multiple integrated transcriptional feedbacks, which collectively lead to global patterns of rhythmic gene expression. The transcriptional networks are essential within the clock itself and in its output pathway.

RESULTS

Here, to expand understanding of transcriptional networks within and associated to the clock, we performed both an in silico analysis of transcript rhythmicity of transcription factor genes, and a pilot assessment of functional phenomics on the MYB, bHLH, and bZIP families. In our in silico analysis, we defined which members of these families express a circadian waveform of transcript abundance. Up to 20% of these families were over-represented as clock-controlled genes. To detect members that contribute to proper oscillator function, we systematically measured rhythmic growth via an imaging system in hundreds of misexpression lines targeting members of the transcription-factor families. Three transcription factors were found that conferred aberrant circadian rhythms when misexpressed: MYB3R2, bHLH69, and bHLH92.

CONCLUSION

Transcript abundance of many transcription factors in Arabidopsis oscillates in a circadian manner. Further, a developed pipeline assessed phenotypic contribution of a panel of transcriptional regulators in the circadian system.
