Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer incidence is now the highest among all cancers and accountable for 6.6% of all cancer-related deaths worldwide. Studies of the prognostic utility of plasma C-reactive protein (CRP) measurement in early-stage breast cancer have given discrepant results. METHODS We identified 6,942 patients in the Danish Breast Cancer Cooperative Group database with early-stage breast cancer diagnosed between 2002 and 2016 who had a measure of pretreatment plasma CRP. Outcomes were recurrence-free interval and survival for a period up to 10 years. We analyzed associations with plasma CRP using Fine-Gray proportional subdistribution hazards model with recurrence-free interval. Data on plasma CRP were analyzed per doubling of concentration and in relation to CRP levels of <3 mg/L, 3 to 10 mg/L, and >10 mg/L and stratified according to standard clinical parameters in sensitivity analyses. RESULTS A doubling of the plasma CRP concentration was associated with increased risk of recurrence (multivariate adjusted HR, 1.05; 95% CI, 1.01-1.08) and shorter survival (HR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.09-1.16) in multivariate analyses. Survival was shorter in patients with plasma CRP levels of 3 to 10 and >10 mg/L versus <3 mg/L, with multivariate adjusted HRs of 1.30; 95% CI, 1.17-1.45 and 1.65; 95% CI, 1.39-1.95, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Elevated plasma CRP measured before treatment in patients with early-stage breast cancer is an independent biomarker of increased risk of recurrence and early death. IMPACT CRP measures before treatment might be used to individualize follow-up of patients with early-stage breast cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many studies have explored the relationship between C-reactive protein (CRP) levels and survival outcomes in patients with ovarian cancer (OC); however, consistent results have not been reported. As such, this meta-analysis was performed to accurately assess the prognostic and clinicopathological roles of CRP in OC. METHODS The PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched for relevant studies published from inception to April 7, 2023. The effect of CRP level(s) and OC prognostic outcomes was analyzed by computing the combined hazard ratio (HR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI). Thereafter, the association between CRP level(s) and clinicopathological factors was evaluated using a combined odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% CI. RESULTS The present meta-analysis included 15 studies comprising 3202 subjects. According to the combined data, higher CRP levels were markedly associated with unfavorable overall survival (OS) (HR 1.23 [95% CI 1.11-1.37]; p < 0.001) and progression-free survival (PFS) (HR 1.55 [95% CI 1.30-1.84]; p < 0.001) in patients with OC. Furthermore, the results indicated that high CRP levels were significantly correlated with International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stages III-IV (p < 0.001), residual tumor size ≥ 1 cm (p < 0.001), histological grade 3 (p = 0.040), and ascites volume ≥ 500 mL (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION The results of this meta-analysis demonstrated that higher serum CRP levels were strongly associated with dismal OS and PFS in subjects with OC. High CRP levels were also significantly associated with clinical factors implicated in tumor aggressiveness and the development of OC.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the prognostic role of C-reactive protein (CRP) in children with Ewing's sarcoma. We conducted a retrospective study on 151 children undergoing multimodal treatment for Ewing's sarcoma in the appendicular skeleton from December 1997 to June 2020. Univariate Kaplan-Meier analyses of laboratory biomarkers and clinical parameters showed that CRP and metastatic disease at presentation were poor prognostic factors associated with overall survival and disease recurrence at 5 years (p < 0.05). A multivariate Cox regression model showed that pathological CRP (≥1.0 mg/dL) [HR of 3.67; 95% CI, 1.46 to 10.42] and metastatic disease [HR of 4.27; 95% CI, 1.58 to 11.47] were associated with a higher risk of death at 5 years (p < 0.05). In addition, pathological CRP (≥1.0 mg/dL) [HR of 2.66; 95% CI, 1.23 to 6.01] and metastatic disease [HR of 2.56; 95% CI, 1.13 to 5.55] were associated with a higher risk of disease recurrence at 5 years (p < 0.05). Our findings demonstrated that CRP was associated with the prognosis of children with Ewing's sarcoma. We recommend pre-treatment measurement of the CRP in order to recognize children with Ewing's sarcoma who are at greater risk of death or local recurrence.

Abstract
Osteoporosis and breast cancer are serious diseases that have become a significant socioeconomic burden. There are biochemical associations between the two disorders in terms of the amended function of estrogen, receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa beta ligand, oxidative stress, inflammation, and lipid accumulation. Honey as a functional food with high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can contribute to the prevention of various diseases. Its health benefits are mainly related to the content of polyphenols. This review aims to summarize the current knowledge from in vitro, animal, and human studies on the use of honey as a potential therapeutic agent for osteoporosis and breast cancer. Preclinical studies have revealed a beneficial impact of honey on both bone health (microstructure, strength, oxidative stress) and breast tissue health (breast cancer cell proliferation and apoptosis, tumor growth rate, and volume). The limited number of clinical trials, especially in osteoporosis, indicates the need for further research to evaluate the potential benefits of honey in the treatment. Clinical studies related to breast cancer have revealed that honey is effective in increasing blood cell counts, interleukin-3 levels, and quality of life. In summary, honey may serve as a prospective therapeutic supplement for bone and breast tissue health.

Abstract
PURPOSE Physical inactivity and obesity increase risk for breast cancer recurrence and cardiovascular death; inflammation is hypothesized to mediate these associations. METHODS In a four-arm randomized controlled trial, 318 breast cancer survivors with overweight or obesity were randomized to exercise alone, weight loss alone, exercise plus weight loss, or control for 12 months. Inflammation outcomes included C-reactive protein (CRP), serum amyloid A (SAA), intracellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1), and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1). RESULTS Compared with control, exercise alone increased ICAM-1 (9.3%; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.6-16.9) and VCAM-1 (8.6%; 95% CI = 2.6-14.5) but did not change CRP or SAA. Compared with control, weight loss alone reduced CRP (-35.2%; 95% CI = -49.9 to -20.7), and SAA (-25.6%; 95% CI = -39.8 to -11.9) but did not change ICAM-1 or VCAM-1. Compared with control, exercise plus weight loss reduced CRP (-44.1%; 95% CI = -57.1 to -31.1) and SAA (-26.6%; 95% CI = -40.5 to -12.6) but did not change ICAM-1 or VCAM-1. Among 194 participants with elevated CRP at baseline (e.g., >3 mg·L -1 ), compared with control, weight loss alone (0.17; 95% CI = 0.04-0.30) and exercise plus weight loss (0.31; 95% CI = 0.16-0.46) increased the probability of achieving normal CRP at month 12. In analyses that consolidated randomized groups, body weight and adiposity reductions, but not change in fitness level, correlated with decreased CRP, SAA, and ICAM-1 levels. CONCLUSIONS In breast cancer survivors with overweight or obesity, weight loss or exercise plus weight loss reduced measures of inflammation that are associated with breast cancer recurrence and cardiovascular death.

Abstract
Inflammation is an enabling characteristic of the hallmarks of cancer. There has therefore been increasing interest in the clinical value of circulating inflammatory biomarkers in cancer. In this review, we summarize results on C-reactive protein (CRP), alone or as part of the Glasgow Prognostic Score (GPS, composed of CRP and serum albumin), as a biomarker of prognosis or prediction and monitoring of therapeutic response in patients with breast cancer. A systematic literature search was performed in Medline and Embase from 1990 to August 2021. The association of serum CRP and overall survival and disease/progression-free survival was summarized in meta-analyses using a random effects model. The results from a total of 35 included studies (20,936 patients) were divided according to three identified patient settings (metastatic, non-metastatic, and general setting). Most of the studies examined prognostic utility. Several larger studies observed associations between high serum CRP and poor survival, but the meta-analyses suggested a limited value in a non-metastatic and general breast cancer setting (populations with unknown or varied disease stage). In metastatic patients, however, more consistent findings supported an association between serum CRP and prognosis (hazard ratio for overall survival: 1.87 (95% CI 1.31-2.67). Only five studies examined a role in prediction or monitoring of therapeutic response. One study reported a significant association between serum CRP levels and response to chemotherapy. Findings regarding serum CRP as a biomarker in breast cancer appear inconsistent, particularly in non-metastatic and general breast cancer, where the prognostic value could not be confirmed. In patients with metastatic breast cancer we suggest that high serum CRP is an indicator of poor prognosis. Too few studies assessed the role of serum CRP in prediction or monitoring of treatment response to allow conclusions.

Abstract
Light pollution is a global environmental issue that affects photosensitive organisms. For instance, several researchers have recognized melatonin suppression in humans as a direct cause of long-term exposure to high artificial light levels at night. Others have identified low melatonin levels as a risk factor for a higher prevalence of hormone-sensitive cancer. This paper analyzes the association between light pollution, estimated as the emission analysis of satellite worldwide nighttime light collections from 1999 to 2012, and 25,025 breast and 16,119 prostate cancer events from 2003 to 2012. Both types of cancer increased during the study period, but light pollution increased in urban and peri-urban areas and decreased in rural areas. Cumulative light pollution during 5 years showed a positive association with breast cancer but not with prostate cancer. The association between light pollution and breast cancer persisted when adjusted to age-standardized rates with a mean increase of 10.9 events per 100,000 population-year (95% confidence interval 7.0 to 14.8). We conclude that exposure to elevated light pollution levels could be a risk factor for breast cancer in Slovakia. This work can interest researchers who study relationships between atmospheric pollutants and the growing cancer epidemic. The results and the methodology can be extrapolated to any country in the world if data is available.

Abstract
The current research work was designed to investigate the protective effects of white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus) against 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-induced breast cancer. Breast cancer was induced in rats by the administration of a single dose of 50 mg/kg DMBA via gavage. The rats were divided into four groups: G1 (negative control group), G2 (positive control group), G3 (rats receiving mushroom extract), and G4 (rats administered with doxorubicin). The mushroom extract significantly (p < .001) improved the activity of antioxidant enzymes in carcinogenic rats. Moreover, the mushroom extract also prevented the increase in the concentration of tumor biomarkers that are CEA, CA 15.3, and CRP in experimental rats. Liver function enzymes were also raised in G2 and G4 compared with G3. Besides, the RBCs and Hb were also reduced significantly in G4 while in G3. The mushroom extract effectively controlled the level of RBCs and Hb. An improvement in lipid profile was also measured in mushroom extract receiving rats. Conclusively, the mushroom extract alleviated DMBA-induced breast cancer potentially via improving antioxidants, reducing lipid peroxidation, and decreasing tumor biomarkers. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The present research study examined the antitumor potential of white button mushroom. The mushroom effectively prevented the increase in tumor biomarkers, reduction in antioxidant enzymes, and increase in lipid peroxidation in rats with DMBA-induced breast cancer. The mushroom can be used as a potential source to prevent breast cancer and further research can be conducted to explore its anticancer mechanisms.

Abstract
Objective To evaluate the clinical prognostic significance of preoperative serum hypersensitive-c-reactive-protein (Hs-CRP) to albumin ratio (CAR) in patients with luminal B subtype breast cancer. Methods A total of 199 patients with luminal B subtype breast cancer enrolled in this study were analyzed retrospectively. The optimal cutoff value of CAR was performed by the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC). The associations between luminal B subtype breast cancer and clinicopathological variables by CAR were performed by chi-square test. Kaplan–Meier and log rank method were used for survival analysis. The independent prognostic factors were determined by univariate and multivariate Cox’s proportional hazards regression model. Results The patients were divided into low CAR group (CAR<0.044) and high CAR group (CAR≥0.044) by ROC. CAR was the independent factor by univariate and multivariate analysis, and the mean DFS and OS in the low CAR group survived longer than those in the high CAR group (p<0.05). According to the endocrine therapy with aromatase inhibitors, the mean survival time of DFS and OS in the low CAR group was significantly higher than that in the high CAR group (p<0.05). Moreover, patients with pathological I+II stage survived longer than those with pathological III stage, and the mean survival time of DFS and OS in the low CAR group was significantly higher than that in the high CAR group (p<0.05). Patients without lymph vessel invasion survived longer than those with lymph vessel invasion (p<0.05), and the mean survival time of DFS and OS in low the CAR group was significantly higher than that in the high CAR group (p<0.05). Conclusion Preoperative CAR was significantly associated with survival and prognosis of breast cancer, and it can be used as a routine prognostic indicator to predict the prognosis of luminal B subtype breast cancer.

Abstract
Chronic inflammation in women diagnosed with breast cancer is critically linked with tumor progression, metastasis and survival. C-reactive protein (CRP)—a circulating marker of inflammation—is an important prognostic marker for cancer-related outcomes in breast cancer survivors (e.g. recurrence, fatigue). Psychological stress, which increases circulating markers of inflammation following sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activation, may modulate tumor-relevant inflammatory processes. However, little is known about neural mechanisms that might link stress and downstream SNS-initiated proinflammatory processes, such as elevated CRP. Past work suggests that threat-related neural regions, such as the amygdala, may be key in translating psychological stress into SNS activity and subsequent peripheral inflammation. Thus, we examined amygdala reactivity to socially threatening stimuli in association with perceived stress and plasma CRP levels to further elucidate neuro-immune pathways of social threat processing within breast cancer survivors (N = 37). Significant positive correlations were found between left amygdala reactivity in response to socially threatening stimuli (e.g. angry/fearful faces vs happy faces) and perceived stress in the previous month (r = 0.32, P = 0.025) and between left amygdala reactivity and CRP (r = 0.33, P = 0.025). This work builds on prior research implicating the amygdala as a key structure in crosstalk between threat-related neural circuitries and peripheral inflammation, particularly within cancer survivors.

Abstract
Breast cancer (BC) in Nigeria is characterized by disproportionately aggressive molecular subtypes. C-reactive protein (CRP) is associated with risk and aggressiveness for several types of cancer. We examined the association of high-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP) with odds of BC by molecular subtype among Nigerian women. Among 296 newly diagnosed BC cases and 259 healthy controls, multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate adjusted odds ratios (aOR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the association between hsCRP and odds of BC overall and by molecular subtype (luminal A, luminal B, HER2-enriched and triple-negative or TNBC). High hsCRP (> 3 mg/L) was observed in 57% of cases and 31% of controls and was associated with 4 times the odds of BC (aOR: 4.43; 95% CI: 2.56, 7.66) after adjusting for socio-demographic, reproductive, and clinical variables. This association persisted regardless of menopausal status and body mass index (BMI) category. High hsCRP was associated with increased odds of TNBC (aOR: 3.32; 95% CI: 1.07, 10.35), luminal A BC (aOR: 4.03; 95% CI: 1.29, 12.64), and HER2-enriched BC (aOR: 6.27; 95% CI: 1.69, 23.25). Future studies are necessary in this population to further evaluate a potential role for CRP as a predictive biomarker for BC.

Abstract
There is strong evidence to suggest that obesity-related proteins play a key role in pathways that are related to breast cancer. In this study, we aimed to establish a robust obesity-related protein score (ORPS) that could be used to assess breast cancer risk. Based on evidence from high-quality systematic reviews and population studies, we selected nine such proteins that are stable in vitro, and measured their circulating concentrations by ELISA in a case-control study conducted in Chengdu, Sichuan, China, with 279 breast cancer cases and 260 healthy controls. Two obesity-related protein scores (ORPS) were calculated using a three-step method, with linear-weighted summation, and the one with a larger area under the curve was chosen for further evaluation. As a result, ORPS (PS5pre or PS4post) was positively correlated with breast cancer risk (premenopausal: OR≤63 VS >63 3.696, 95% CI 2.025-6.747; postmenopausal: OR≤38 VS >38 7.100, 95% CI 3.134-16.084), and represented a better risk predictor among obese women compared to non-obese in pre- and postmenopausal women. Among different molecular subtypes, ORPS was positively correlated with Luminal breast cancer, with additionally positive association with triple-negative breast cancer in premenopausal women. The ORPS might be a potential marker of breast cancer risk among Chinese women.

Abstract
Although immunotherapy is a potential strategy to resist cancers, due to the inadequate acknowledge, this treatment is not always effective for diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) patients. Based on the current situation, it is critical to systematically investigate the immune pattern. According to the result of univariate and multivariate cox proportional hazards, LASSO regression and Kaplan-Meier survival analysis on immune-related genes (IRGs), a prognostic signature, containing 14 IRGs (AQP9, LMBR1L, FGF20, TANK, CRP, ORM1, JAK1, BACH2, MTCP1, IFITM1, TNFSF10, FGF12, RFX5, and LAP3), was built. This model was validated by external data, and performed well. DLBCL patients were divided into low- and high-risk groups, according to risk scores from risk formula. The results of CIBERSORT showed that different immune status and infiltration pattern were observed in these two groups. Gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA) indicated 12 signaling pathways were significantly enriched in the high-risk group, such as natural killer cell-mediated cytotoxicity, toll-like receptor signaling pathway, and so on. In summary, 14 clinically significant IRGs were screened to build a risk score formula. This formula was an accurate tool to provide a certain basis for the treatment of DLBCL patients.

C-reactive protein and tumour diagnosis predict survival in patients treated surgically for long bone metastases. INTERNATIONAL ORTHOPAEDICS 2021; 45:1337-1346. Abstract
PURPOSE Surgical options for long bone metastases include intramedullary nail fixation or prosthetic reconstruction. Patients with a short life expectancy may benefit from less invasive surgery such as intramedullary nail fixation, while patients with a long life expectancy could be treated with more invasive surgery such as prosthetic reconstruction. The purpose of our study was to analyze the survival of patients treated surgically for long bone metastases, determining the prognostic factors affecting survival and analyzing the surgical complications and reoperation rates. Based on our results, we developed a prognostic score that helps to choose the best treatment for these patients. In addition, we compared the performance of our prognostic score with other previous prognostic models. METHOD We investigated prospectively potential clinical and laboratory prognostic factors in 159 patients with metastatic bone disease who underwent surgery with intramedullary nail fixation or prosthetic reconstruction. Clinical data were collected, recording the following data: age and sex of patients, primary tumour and time of diagnosis, number (single or multiple) and presentation (synchronous or metachronous) of bone metastases, presence of visceral metastases. The following laboratory data were analyzed: hemoglobin, leukocyte counts, lymphocyte counts, platelets count, alkaline phosphatase, and C-reactive protein. RESULTS Our study showed that pathological C-reactive protein and primary tumour diagnosis were significant negative independent prognostic factors at 12-month survival. Based on our results, we created a score using C-reactive protein and primary tumour diagnosis, creating three different prognostic groups: (A) good prognosis primary tumour and physiological CRP with probability of survival at 12 months of 88.9 [80.1-98.5]; (B) bad prognosis primary tumour and physiological CRP or good prognosis primary tumour and pathological CRP with a probability of survival at 12 months of 56.7 [45.4-70.7]; (C) bad prognosis primary tumour and pathological CRP with a probability of survival at 12 months of 12.5 [5.0-28.3]. Using ROC multiple analysis, our score (AUC = 0.816) was the most accurate in predicting a 12-month survival compared to previous prognostic models. DISCUSSION Patients treated surgically for long bone metastases with a life expectancy over 12 months should be treated with more durable reconstruction, while patients with a life expectancy less than 12 months should be treated with less invasive surgery. The diagnosis of primary cancer and C-reactive protein are two very simple data which every orthopaedic surgeon in any community hospital can easily rely on for any decision-making in the surgical treatment of a complex patient as with a patient with skeletal metastases. CONCLUSION Our prognostic score based on only two simple variables (C-reactive protein and primary tumour diagnosis) was able to predict the 12-month survival of patients treated surgically for long bone metastases and could be helpful in choosing the best treatment for these patients.

Abstract
Breast cancer (BC) is a molecularly heterogeneous disease that encompasses five major molecular subtypes (luminal A (LA), luminal B HER2 negative (LB-), luminal B HER2 positive (LB+), HER2 positive (HER2+) and triple negative breast cancer (TNBC)). BC treatment mainly depends on the identification of the specific subtype. Despite the correct identification, therapies could fail in some patients. Thus, further insights into the genetic and molecular status of the different BC subtypes could be very useful to improve the response of BC patients to the range of available therapies. In this way, we used gold nanoparticles (AuNPs, 12.96 ± 0.72 nm) as a scavenging tool in combination with Sequential Window Acquisition of All Theoretical Mass Spectra (SWATH-MS) to quantitatively analyze the serum proteome alterations in the different breast cancer intrinsic subtypes. The differentially regulated proteins specific of each subtype were further analyzed with the bioinformatic tools STRING and PANTHER to identify the major molecular function, biological processes, cellular origin, protein class and biological pathways altered due to the heterogeneity in proteome of the different BC subtypes. Importantly, a profile of blood coagulation proteins was identified in the serum of HER2-overexpressing BC patients.

Traditional techniques for cancer diagnosis, such as nuclear magnetic resonance, ultrasound and tissue analysis, require sophisticated devices and highly trained personnel, which are characterized by elevated operation costs. The use of biomarkers has emerged as an alternative for cancer diagnosis, prognosis and prediction because their measurement in tissues or fluids, such as blood, urine or saliva, is characterized by shorter processing times. However, the biomarkers used currently, and the techniques used for their measurement, including ELISA, western-blot, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) or immunohistochemistry, possess low sensitivity and specificity. Therefore, the search for new proteomic, genomic or immunological biomarkers and the development of new noninvasive, easier and cheaper techniques that meet the sensitivity and specificity criteria for the diagnosis, prognosis and prediction of this disease has become a relevant topic. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview about the search for new cancer biomarkers, including the strategies that must be followed to identify them, as well as presenting the latest advances in the development of biosensors that possess a high potential for cancer diagnosis, prognosis and prediction, mainly focusing on their relevance in lung, prostate and breast cancers.

Abstract
PURPOSE Our aim is to examine the associations between high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), common biomarkers of inflammation and insulin resistance, respectively, with breast cancer risk, while adjusting for measures of excess body size. METHODS We conducted a nested case-control study within the Alberta's Tomorrow Project cohort (Alberta, Canada) including 197 incident breast cancer cases and 394 matched controls. The sample population included both pre- and postmenopausal women. Serum concentrations of hsCRP and HbA1c were measured from blood samples collected at baseline, along with anthropometric measurements, general health and lifestyle data. Conditional logistic regression was used to evaluate associations between hsCRP, HbA1c, and breast cancer risk adjusted for excess body size (body fat percentage) and other risk factors for breast cancer. RESULTS Higher concentrations of hsCRP were associated with elevated breast cancer risk (odds ratio [OR] 1.27; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.03-1.55). The observed associations were unchanged with adjustment for body fat percentage. Higher HbA1c concentrations were not significantly associated with an increased breast cancer risk (OR 1.22; 95% CI 0.17-8.75). CONCLUSION These data suggest that hsCRP may be associated with elevated breast cancer risk, independent of excess body size. However, elevated concentrations of HbA1c did not appear to increase breast cancer risk in apparently healthy women.

Abstract
The pentraxin is a superfamily of proteins with the same domain known as the pentraxin domain at C-terminal. This family has two subgroups, namely; short pentraxins (C-reactive protein and serum amyloid P component) and long pentraxins (neuronal pentraxin 1, neuronal pentraxin 2, neuronal pentraxin receptor, pentraxin 3 and pentraxin 4). Each group shares a similar structure with the pentameric complexes arranged in a discoid shape. Previous studies revealed the functions of different pentraxin family members. Most of them are associated with human innate immunity. Inflammation has commonly been associated with tumor progression, implying that the pentraxin family might also participate in tumor progression. Therefore, we reviewed the basic characteristics and functions of the pentraxin family and their role in tumor progression.
