Abstract
The epidemiology of inflammatory diseases affecting the central nervous system (CNS) in dogs is largely unknown. We aimed to report the relative proportion of different causes of inflammatory disease affecting the CNS in dogs and identify predictors for infectious vs. immune-mediated conditions and predictors for the most common diseases affecting the brain and the spinal cord. This was a retrospective cohort study over a 10-year period in 2 referral institutions using multivariable and multinomial logistic regression for identification of risk factors. In total, 1,140 client-owned dogs diagnosed with inflammatory disease affecting the CNS were included. Fifteen different diagnoses were identified, with immune-mediated (83.6%) disease being more common than infectious conditions (16.4%). The most common immune-mediated conditions diagnosed were meningoencephalitis of unknown origin (47.5%) and steroid-responsive meningitis–arteritis (30.7%), and the most common infectious conditions were discospondylitis (9.3%) and otogenic intracranial infection (2.2%). Older age (p < 0.001, OR = 1.019, 95% CI: 1.014–1.024), higher body weight (p < 0.001, OR = 1.049, 95% CI: 1.025–1.074), male sex (p = 0.009, OR = 1.685, 95% CI: 1.141–2.488), longer duration of the clinical signs before presentation (p < 0.001, OR = 1.011, 95% CI: 1.006–1.017), progressive nature of the clinical signs (p < 0.001, OR = 2.295, 95% CI: 1.463–3.599), identification of a possibly associated preceding event (p = 0.0012, OR = 1.93, 95% CI: 1.159–3.213), and hyperesthesia on presentation (p < 0.001, OR = 2.303, 95% CI: 1.528–3.473) were associated with a diagnosis of infectious diseases. Our data shows that immune-mediated diseases are more common than infectious conditions as a cause for inflammatory CNS disease in dogs. The risk factors for the most common diagnoses were identified from signalment, history, and findings of the physical and neurological examinations to give valuable information that can guide clinicians with their investigations.

Abstract
Objectives Despite comprehensive diagnostics, the aetiology of meningoencephalitis (ME) in cats often remains undetermined. As a result of recently published surveys, Encephalitozoon cuniculi has gained growing importance in cats not only with ocular disorders, but also with central nervous system disease. Therefore, it was hypothesised that E cuniculi may be an underestimated pathogen in the development of feline non-suppurative and/or granulomatous ME. Methods As a first step, histopathological sections of the brain of cats with encephalopathy were retrospectively reviewed to identify cases of granulomatous ME. In a second step, an immunohistochemical screening for detection of E cuniculi was performed in cases with ME of unknown origin. Results In 59/89 (66.3%) cats with ME, an aetiologically relevant pathogen was detected. Forty-three of 89 (48.3%) cats had a diagnosis of feline infectious peritonitis. In 14/89 (15.7%) cats, protozoan cysts were identified and infection with Toxoplasma gondii was confirmed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in all cases. In 2/89 (2.3%) cats with granulomatous ME, fungal organisms were identified. Thirty of 89 (33.7%) cats with ME of unknown origin that underwent IHC for the detection of E cuniculi remained negative. Conclusions and relevance The results of this study suggest that E cuniculi is unlikely to be directly associated with (non-suppurative and/or granulomatous) ME in cats in Austria.

Abstract
An outbreak of neurological disease in grower pigs characterised by ataxia and paraparesis was investigated in this study. The outbreak occurred 3-4 weeks post weaning in grower pigs which displayed signs of spinal cord damage progressing to recumbency. Pathology in the affected spinal cords and to a lesser extent in the brainstem was characterised by pronounced inflammation and neuronophagia in the grey matter. Molecular investigation using a pan-virus microarray identified a virus related to porcine sapelovirus (PSV) in the spinal cord of the two affected pigs examined. Analysis of 802 nucleotides of the virus polymerase gene showed the highest homology with those of viruses in the genus Sapelovirus of Picornaviridae. This PSV, strain G5, shared 91-93%, 67-69% and 63% nucleotide homology with porcine, simian and avian sapeloviruses, respectively. The nucleotide homology to other members of the Picornaviridae ranged from 41% to 62%. Furthermore, viral antigen was detected and co-localised in the spinal cord lesions of affected animals by an antibody known to react with PSV. In conclusion, clinical and laboratory observations of the diseased pigs in this outbreak are consistent with PSV-G5 being the causative agent. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first unequivocal report of polioencephalomyelitis in pigs by a neuroinvasive PSV in the United Kingdom.

Abstract
Twenty-one cats presented with a history of slowly progressive neurological signs characterised by a stiff extended tail, behavioural changes, and spastic and ataxic gait. All cats had outdoor access and lived in the same geographical rural area in north-east Scotland. Histological findings were consistent with lymphohistiocytic meningoencephalomyelitis. Immunohistochemistry ruled out 15 pathogens and showed a significant expression of the interferon-inducible Mx protein, suggesting an as yet unidentified infective or environmental immunogenic trigger as the possible causative agent. The late age at onset (mean 9 years), the very slow progression of clinical signs (mean 11 months) and the peculiar clinical presentation (particularly the posture of the tail) have not been reported previously in cats with lymphohistiocytic meningoencephalomyelitis.

Abstract
PRACTICAL RELEVANCE Neurological disease is a relatively common reason for referral, constituting approximately 10% of the feline referral caseload. Nearly one-third to one-half of these cases may be infectious in origin. As such, an awareness of infectious diseases causing central nervous system (CNS) signs in cats, and their clinical diagnosis and management, is relevant to anyone dealing with cats on a regular basis. GLOBAL IMPORTANCE Some conditions (eg, rabies) are more common in certain countries than others. Conditions such as feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) and toxoplasmosis are of global significance. PATIENT GROUP Many infectious diseases may affect any feline population. Some, such as FIP, are more common in pedigree households, whereas others such as toxoplasmosis, feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) or feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) infections, are more likely to affect a single cat with an outdoor lifestyle. EQUIPMENT All patients benefit from thorough history taking and clinical, neurological and ophthalmic examinations, which all require minimal equipment. Infectious diseases may often be diagnosed on blood samples; however, definitive diagnosis may require more extensive investigation involving cerebrospinal fluid analysis or advanced imaging necessitating access to computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. EVIDENCE BASE The information in this review, which summarises current knowledge of infectious diseases affecting the CNS, is collated from publications on the infectious diseases comprising previous research papers, review articles, case series, case reports and textbooks, supplemented by the clinical experience of the authors.
