Effect of the timing of radiation therapy on the push-out strength of resin cement to root dentine

This study investigated the effect of radiation timing on the bond strength of resin cement to intraradicular dentine. Fifty human teeth were distributed into 5 groups (n = 10): Control (nonirradiated teeth), Before-RCT (teeth irradiated before root canal treatment), After-CH (teeth irradiated after canal preparation and placement of calcium hydroxide intracanal dressing), After-RCT (teeth irradiated after completion of root canal treatment) and After-FPL (teeth irradiated after luting of a glass fibre post). Each tooth received 70 Gy irradiation. The roots were sectioned for push-out strength testing. After-RCT and After-FPL groups had significantly lower push-out strength than the control at the middle third (p < 0.05). Control and After-CH groups had a higher percentage of cohesive dentine failure. Radiotherapy after root canal obturation and post luting adversely affected the adhesiveness of resin cement to intraradicular dentine. Teeth irradiated before root canal treatment and after placement of calcium hydroxide had the best performance.

How the translucency of direct anatomic fiber posts affects the bond strength and microhardness of a self-adhesive luting agent in flared roots

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate the influence of the composite resin translucency used in direct anatomic fiber posts on the bond strength (BS) and microhardness (VHN) of a luting agent into flared roots.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The root canals of 70 single-rooted premolars were endodontically treated and prepared to simulate an oversized root canal. Prior to post cementation, composite resins with varying translucency (high translucent, HT; medium translucent, MT; high opacity, HO) were placed around the fiber posts to create anatomic fiber posts. The attenuation profile (%) of light passing either through the post or through the anatomic posts (n = 8) was obtained prior to the cementing procedures. A positive control group (PC) in which a prefabricated fiber post (PFP) with the diameter compatible with the root canal was cemented and a poorly adapted fiber post (negative control group, NC) were also evaluated. For both tests, the data were subjected to 2-way ANOVA and Bonferroni tests (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

A more severe light attenuation through the post at the cervical (P < .001) and medium (P < 0.001) thirds was noted when less translucent composite resin surrounded the anatomic post. HO groups showed lower BS (P = .009) and VHN (P < .001) values than the other groups, regardless of root third. No significant difference in BS values was noted between PC and HT groups.

CONCLUSION

The use of a more translucent composite resin in anatomic fiber posts increased the microhardness and bond strength of a dual polymerization self-adhesive RLA compared to the use of MT and HO composite. A well-adapted PFP showed the highest adhesive and mechanical behavior.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Clinicians should choose more translucent composite resins to create direct anatomic fiber posts to be cemented in flared root canals. That choice may allow improved mechanical properties of self-adhesive RLA and higher bond strength to the root canal as a consequence.

Effects of Both Fiber Post/Core Resin Construction System and Root Canal Sealer on the Material Interface in Deep Areas of Root Canal

This study aimed to examine the resin polymerization of a fiber post/core resin construction system and the interface between resin and root canal sealers, which are important for root canal sealing. We used the i-TFC Luminus fiber post and i-TFC Luminus LC flow (i-TFC-L), the GC fiber post and Unifil Core EM (GCF), and the FiberKor post and Build-It FR (FKP) as core construction systems, and Nishika Canal Sealer BG (CS-BG), Metaseal Soft (META), and Nishika Canal Sealer EN (CS-EN) as sealers. The light transmission of fiber posts (n = 5), the polymerization of core resin (n = 5), and the adhesion between the sealer and core resin (n = 10) were evaluated. The i-TFC Luminus fiber post light transmission was significantly higher than that of other posts. Without shielding, i-TFC-L showed a significantly greater amount of polymerized resin than the other systems. With shielding, although i-TFC-L showed a significantly greater amount of polymerized resin immediately after light irradiation, polymerized resin was significantly greater in GCF and FKP after 10 min. All systems adhered to CS-BG and META but not to CS-EN. These results indicate that resin polymerization in the cavity differs among fiber post/core resin construction systems and that the adhesion of the resin and sealer depends on the property of the sealer.

Light transmission and bond strength of glass fiber posts submitted to different surface treatments

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Light transmitted deep into the root canal is an important parameter to increase bonding of the cement to the post and dentin. Glass fiber posts seem to be an option to increase transmitted light, but literature on the light transmittance profile and power transmission to deep canal regions is lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate light delivered by 2 types of fiberglass posts submitted to different surface treatments and to evaluate the bond strength.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Whiteposts and Superposts were allocated to 4 groups: no surface treatment, surface treatment with 24% hydrogen peroxide, surface treatment with silane, and surface treatment with 24% hydrogen peroxide plus silane. The total light transmitted by the posts was measured by using an integrating sphere to collect the diffuse light. The light profile that was laterally delivered to the post was measured with a power detector equipped with an optical fiber probe. The bond strength was measured with the push-out test. Scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate the surface treatments. The light transmission data were analyzed by using a generalized linear model and the Bonferroni test and the bond strength values were evaluated by using ANOVA and the Tukey test (α=.05).

RESULTS

The cervical third presented the highest transmission (74.1% for Whiteposts and 74.6% for Superposts), followed by the middle (20.9% for Whiteposts and 20.4% for Superposts) and apical (5.0% for both Whiteposts and Superposts) thirds. Superposts led to higher bond strength than Whiteposts (9.73 ±5.89 and 8.48 ±4.99 MPa, respectively). Surface treatment with silane and hydrogen peroxide plus silane afforded similar bond strength (11.4 ±6.4 and 10.7 ±5.6 MPa, respectively), which was higher as compared with the bond strength obtained after surface treatment with hydrogen peroxide. For both post types, the bond strength decreased from the cervical (12.2 ±6.0 MPa) to the middle (9.7 ±5.0 MPa) and apical (6.5 ±3.6 MPa) thirds.

CONCLUSIONS

Light transmission and bond strength decreased from the cervical to the apical third. Surface treatment impacted bond strength; light transmission through Whiteposts was slightly higher than light transmission through Superposts.

Influence of single post, oval, and multi-post restorative techniques and amount of residual tooth substance on fracture strength of endodontically treated maxillary premolars

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to compare the influence of the number of coronal walls and post-endodontic restorations on the mechanical strength of 165 recently extracted endodontically treated maxillary premolars.

METHODS

The teeth were divided into 3 control (no post) and 3 test groups according to the number of residual walls. Each test group was divided into subgroups according to the type of post-endodontic restoration (single, oval, and multi-post techniques). Samples were prepared conforming to the assigned subgroup. A universal loading machine applied a load parallel to the longitudinal axis of the teeth, thus simulating physiological occlusion. ANOVA and the Kruskal Wallis test were used for comparisons (P ≤ 0.05), and Tukey's test for multiple comparisons.

RESULTS

For intact teeth, significant differences were found among all 3 subgroups, with single post showing the highest values. For 3 residual walls, oval post resulted in significantly lower values than single and multi-post systems. For 2 residual walls, the multi-post technique showed almost twice the resistance of oval post restorations.

CONCLUSION

In oval canals the use of a single or multi-post technique increased post-and-core resistance even in intact teeth, whereas oval fiber posts showed no improvements. Multi-post design improved fracture resistance mostly in maxillary premolars lacking both marginal ridges.

Kinetics of polymerization shrinkage of self-adhesive and conventional dual-polymerized resin luting agents inside the root canal

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

Information regarding the shrinkage kinetics and monomer conversion of dual-polymerized conventional and self-adhesive resin luting agents (RLA) in situ is lacking.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the shrinkage strain and ratio of 1 conventional and 1 self-adhesive RLA by using fiber optic sensors based on Bragg gratings and Vickers hardness in the root canal.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

The root canals of 34 single-rooted premolars were endodontically treated and assigned to 2 groups according to the RLA: RelyX ARC (ARC) and RelyX U200 (U200). Two Bragg grating sensors were attached to fiber posts (n=10), and both post and RLA were placed inside the root canal so that shrinkage strain and ratio values could be measured at the cervical and apical root thirds. For hardness analysis (n=7), two 1-mm-thick slices of each root-third (cervical and apical) were obtained, and 4 indentations were made on the RLA layer. The shrinkage strain and rate, as well as hardness data, were evaluated by using 2-way repeated-measures ANOVA followed by the Bonferroni post hoc test when a significant interaction between factors was detected (α=.05).

RESULTS

The shrinkage strain and rate values of both RLAs were higher at the cervical third than those at the apical third. ARC showed higher shrinkage strain than U200 at the cervical third. The highest hardness values were observed at the cervical third, while ARC showed the lowest hardness values at the apical third.

CONCLUSIONS

The shrinkage kinetics profile and hardness of self-adhesive RLA may differ from those of conventional RLA depending on the root third.

Fracture strength of endodontically treated teeth restored with different fiber post and core systems

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different post and core systems, CAD/CAM crown placement on fracture strength of endodontically treated mandibular premolar teeth. One hundred forty single-rooted premolar teeth were randomly divided into a control group and six experimental groups as follows: control group (Group 1); FiberSite post luting with Clearfil DC Core Plus (Group 2); RelyX Fiber post luting and core build up with Clearfil DC Core Plus (Group 3); RelyX Fiber post luting with Clearfil DC Core Plus and core build up with Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior (Group 4); specimens that received CAD/CAM crowns after the same procedures performed in Groups 2, 3, and 4, respectively (Groups 5, 6, and 7). Fracture strength tests were performed, and the failure modes were recorded. Data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests. The highest fracture resistance was observed in the control group and among the experimental groups in Group 4. Groups 3 and 5 showed similar fracture resistance followed by Group 2. The lowest fracture resistances were seen in the samples of Groups 6 and 7. While the fracture strength of Group 2 increased after the crown placement (Group 5), the fracture strength of Group 3 and Group 4 decreased (P < 0.05). While the specimens in Groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 predominantly showed favorable failure, unfavorable failure was more frequent in Groups 5, 6, and 7.

Effect of carbodiimide and chlorhexidine on the bond strength longevity of resin cement to root dentine after radiation therapy

AIM

To evaluate the effect of carbodiimide (EDC) and chlorhexidine (CHX) on the bond strength (BS) of resin cement to root dentine of teeth submitted to radiotherapy.

METHODOLOGY

One hundred and twenty extracted maxillary canines were selected and assigned to 2 groups (n = 60): nonirradiated and irradiated (30 cycles of 2 Gy, total 60 Gy). Roots lengths were standardized, and canals were prepared and filled. Post spaces were then prepared, and the samples were redistributed according to dentine treatment (n = 20): saline solution (SF); CHX 2%; or EDC 0.5M. After drying the post space, fibreglass posts were cemented. Cross-sectioned slices were obtained, and in half of the specimens of each subgroup (n = 10), the analysis was performed immediately; the others (n = 10) were stored for 10 months before analyses. The most cervical slice of each third was subjected to a push-out test and failure pattern analysis (n = 10), and the most apical slice submitted to the analysis of the adhesive interface by SEM (n = 5). The bond strength data were submitted to anova and Tukey tests, the adhesive interface adaptation was submitted to Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn's tests, and the Chi-square test was used to evaluate the type of failure.

RESULTS

The irradiated specimens had significantly lower bond strength (13.8 ± 4.3) than the nonirradiated (18.1 ± 3.1; P < 0.001). For the irradiated teeth, the bond strengths were significantly lower in the SF and CHX groups (P < 0.001). Also, the bond strengths reduced significantly after 10 months in the SF and CHX groups (P < 0.001). Cohesive failures occurred in dentine for irradiated specimens. Poorer interface adaptation, dentine fractures and microfractures were observed in irradiated specimens, and better adaptation was observed for specimens after EDC treatment.

CONCLUSIONS

Radiotherapy was associated with lower bond strength and worse interface adaptation. Dentine treatment with EDC contributed to adhesive interface longevity during the cementation of glass fibre posts in nonirradiated and irradiated teeth.

In Vivo Measurement of Root Canal Wall Temperature at Different Stages Prior to Fiber Post Cementation

Objective This study measured the in vivo temperature of prepared root canal walls during various stages of treatment prior to endodontic postcementation.

Materials and Methods One tooth each from five patients requiring endodontic treatment received conventional gutta-percha obturation. The coronal 4 mm of gutta-percha was removed by drilling and the canal wall temperature was measured. A sterile, saline rinse was applied, and another temperature value was recorded. Paper points were placed, and the wall temperature was recorded. A standardized period of 1.5 minute passed, simulating time needed to mix and place the resin cement and post (no resin was placed), after which the final wall temperature was obtained. The tooth was temporized and scheduled for prosthetic reconstruction. A one-way repeated measure analysis of variance (with Tukey's post hoc test) was performed among mean temperature values for each treatment stage (preset α 0.05).

Results Significant temperature differences were found among the treatment stages. Canal space drilling yielded the highest temperature (35.5 ± 0.8°C), while the lowest was obtained after saline rinsing (34.0 ± 0.9°C). The temperature of prepared root canal wall prior to postplacement (34.9 ± 1.2°C) and following paper point drying (34.8 ± 1.1°C) presented intermediate results, with no statistical difference between them.

Conclusions This study suggested that root canal wall temperature varied during various stages of preparation prior to endodontic post.

Development and characterization of biological bovine dentin posts

This study aimed at evaluating the use of biological dentin post (BDP), achieved by milling bovine root, through the analyses of mechanical and optical properties. BDPs were compared to a glass fiber post (GFP) in the following tests (n = 10): a) elastic modulus (E) and flexural resistance (σ) by three point bending test; b) fracture resistance (FR) by compressive load at 45° and failure pattern; c) light transmitting (LT) ability and their influence on the resin cement's degree of conversion (DC%); d) bond strength (BS) by push-out test and failure pattern. Bovine teeth were decoronated and root length was standardized at 14 mm. The canals were prepared and irrigated with 2.5% NaOCl. GFP's surface was conditioned by 1 min immersion in 24% H₂O₂ solution before silanization. After root embedment, the root canal walls and the BDP's surface were hybridized (H₃PO₄ 37% + self-cured adhesive) for FR and DC% analyses. Posts were fixed into the root canals using a conventional dual resin cement. For BS test, both posts were luted using the conventional and the self-adhesive cementation. A universal testing machine (EMIC DL2000; 1 mm/min) was employed for the mechanical tests (E, σ, FR and BS). For the LT analysis, opaque polyethylene discs were transfixed by the posts, leaving 10 mm of the posts' apical section for measurements. Posts' cervical portion was irradiated (800 mW/cm²) and a spectrometer recorded the number of photons transmitted to previously chosen lateral post regions and at the apical tip. The resin cement DC% was evaluated in several sites of the cement film. After normal distribution were checked (Shapiro-Wilk test), data were submitted to ANOVA (5%) and Scheffe post-hoc test (5%). Results showed that: a) E: BDP > GFP; b) σ: BDP < GFP; c) RF: BDP < GFP; d) LT could not be observed for BDP. For GFPs, the greatest number of photons was observed at the post apical tip. An exponential decay was observed from the cervical to the apical post region; e) resin cement DC% was statistically similar at all points of measurements for both posts; and, f) BS: BDP = GFP, regardless the adhesive protocol used. It was concluded that: a) teeth restored with BDP exhibited lower fracture resistance than those restored with GFP; b) resin cement DC% was not influenced by the light transmitting ability of the post; c) the retention provided by the BDP was similar to the one provided by GFP, independently of the luting protocol.

The Post-endodontic Adhesive Interface: Theoretical Perspectives and Potential Flaws

INTRODUCTION

The aim of this review was to analyze the potential of successful bonds of endodontic posts to radicular dentin as well as the limitations of the post-endodontic adhesive interface.

METHODS

The MEDLINE/PubMed and Web of Science electronic databases were searched. The search was augmented by a manual search of the pertinent bibliographies.

RESULTS

The post-endodontic adhesive interface finds application in the endodontic cohesive units. Many techniques and materials exist to improve the bond between endodontic posts and resin-based materials as well as between resin-based materials and radicular dentin. Different techniques used for the adhesion of metallic and fiber-reinforced posts are discussed and critically analyzed.

CONCLUSIONS

Although adhesive cementation of endodontic posts is popular, a long-term predictable bond may be compromised because of procedures related to the endodontic treatment and/or the adhesive cementation procedures. Microleakage and degradation phenomena may further jeopardize the post-endodontic adhesive interface.

Influence of dentin pretreatment with synthetic hydroxyapatite application on the bond strength of fiber posts luted with 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate-containing luting systems

The aim of this in vitro study was evaluate the effect of application of synthetic hydroxyapatite on fiber post bond strength to radicular dentine. Forty, single-root teeth were endodontically treated and an 8 mm post space was prepared. Specimens were randomly placed in four groups (n = 10 in each) and treated using the following fiber post luting procedures: group 1, 17% EDTA + Panavia SA; group 2, 17% EDTA + Teethmate Desensitizer + Panavia SA; group 3, All-Bond Universal + Duo-Link Universal; and group 4, All-Bond Universal + Teethmate Desensitizer + Duo-Link Universal. Fiber posts were luted in the post space and light-cured for 120 s using a light-emitting diode (LED) lamp. After 7 d of storage at 37°C, the teeth were cut into 1-mm-thick slices, which were subjected to a push-out test until failure using a universal testing machine. Two specimens per group were prepared for scanning electron microscopy analysis. An energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy detector was used for elemental analysis of the specimen surface. The results were statistically analyzed using one-way anova. The fiber post bond strength was statistically significantly increased after the application of Teethmate Desensitizer to post space walls, either with a 10-MDP-containing self-adhesive cement or with a universal adhesive. Scanning electron microscopy and EDAX analysis showed that Teethmate Desensitizer created a calcium phosphate precipitate over post space dentinal tubules, which significantly improved the bond strength of the fiber post luted with 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP)-containing adhesive systems.

Light transmittance of fiber posts following various surface treatments: A preliminary study

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to compare the light transmittance of fiber posts following application of various surface treatments.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Fiber post specimens (Snowpost red size #14) were tested (n = 7). The fiber posts were divided into five groups according to the application of surface treatments: Group 1: No surface treatment; Group 2: Etched with hydrofluoric acid (HF) + silane application; Group 3: Airborne-particle abraded with 110 μm Al2O3; Group 4: Irradiated with erbium: Yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser; Group 5: Airborne-particle abraded with 110 μm Al2O3 + silane application. The light transmittance of the specimens was compared using a spectrophotometer. Statistical significance was determined using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

One-way ANOVA revealed that surface treatment had significant effects on light transmittance of posts (P < 0.001). While laser treatment had the highest percentage of light transmittance, treatment with silane following HF application had the lowest.

CONCLUSION

Application of surface treatments might negatively affect the light transmission property of fiber posts.

Effect of Photoactivation Timing on the Mechanical Properties of Resin Cements and Bond Strength of Fiberglass Post to Root Dentin

OBJECTIVES

This study tested the hypothesis that photoactivation timing and resin cement affect mechanical properties and bond strength of fiberglass posts to root dentin at different depths.

METHODS

Fiberglass posts (Exacto, Angelus) were luted with RelyX Unicem (3M ESPE), Panavia F 2.0 (Kuraray), or RelyX ARC (3M ESPE) using three photoactivation timings: light curing immediately, after three minutes, or after five minutes. Push-out bonding strength, PBS (n=10) was measured on each root region (coronal, middle, apical). The elastic modulus (E) and Vickers hardness (VHN) of the cement layer along the root canal were determined using dynamic indentation (n=5). A strain-gauge test was used to measure post-gel shrinkage of each cement (n=10). Residual shrinkage stress was assessed with finite element analysis. Data were analyzed with two-way analysis of variance in a split-plot arrangement and a Tukey test (α=0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis was used to determine the influence of study factors.

RESULTS

The five-minute delay photoactivation timing significantly increased the PBS for all resin cements evaluated. The PBS decreased significantly from coronal to apical root canal regions. The mean values for E and VHN increased significantly with the delayed photoactivation for RelyX Unicem and decreased from coronal to apical root regions for all resin cements with the immediate-curing timing.

CONCLUSIONS

The PBS of fiber posts to root dentin, E, and VHN values were affected by the root canal region, photoactivation timing, and resin cement type. Shrinkage stress values decreased gradually with delayed photoactivation for all the cements.

Influence of luting agent translucency on fiber post retention

The aim was to assess the influence of cement translucency on the retentive strength of luted fiber posts. Twenty extracted human premolars were randomly divided into four equal groups, based on the combinations of materials to be tested. Two post types of the same size, shape, and chemical composition, but different light-transmission properties [Translucent post (TP) and Opaque post (OP)] were selected. The two post types were luted using the etch-and-rinse, light-curing adhesive in combination with two shades of the same resin cement of markedly different light-transmitting ability [Transparent shade (TS) and Opaque shade (OS)]. Early post retention was assessed using the thin-slice push-out test. Post type did not significantly influence post retention; however, cement translucency emerged as a relevant factor in intraradicular cementation, with the TS achieving higher push-out strengths. The between-factor interaction was also statistically significant; specifically, OP-OS yielded significantly lower retentive strengths than all the other groups. Post translucency did not influence post retention, provided that a highly translucent cement was utilized for luting.

Measurement of Elastic Modulus and Vickers Hardness of Surround Bone Implant Using Dynamic Microindentation - Parameters Definition

The clinical performance of dental implants is strongly defined by biomechanical principles. The aim of this study was to quantify the Vicker's hardness (VHN) and elastic modulus (E) surround bone to dental implant in different regions, and to discuss the parameters of dynamic microindantion test. Ten cylindrical implants with morse taper interface (Titamax CM, Neodent; 3.5 mm diameter and 7 mm a height) were inserted in rabbit tibia. The mechanical properties were analyzed using microhardness dynamic indenter with 200 mN load and 15 s penetration time. Seven continuous indentations were made distancing 0.08 mm between each other perpendicularly to the implant-bone interface towards the external surface, at the limit of low (Lp) and high implant profile (Hp). Data were analyzed by Student's t-test (a=0.05) to compare the E and VHN values obtained on both regions. Mean and standard deviation of E (GPa) were: Lp. 16.6 ± 1.7, Hp. 17.0 ± 2.5 and VHN (N/mm2): Lp. 12.6 ± 40.8, Hp. 120.1 ± 43.7. No statistical difference was found between bone mechanical properties of high and low profile of the surround bone to implant, demonstrating that the bone characterization homogeneously is pertinent. Dynamic microindantion method proved to be highly useful in the characterization of the individual peri-implant bone tissue.

Comparison of different dentin pretreatment protocols on the bond strength of glass fiber post using self-etching adhesive

INTRODUCTION

This study compared the influence of different irrigants with and without ultrasound or laser irradiation on the bond strength of glass fiber posts using a self-etching adhesive in a supplementary dentin pretreatment.

METHODS

Ninety bovine incisor roots were divided into 3 groups according to the irrigant tested: 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) (n = 30); 2.5% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) (n = 30), and saline solution (control) (n = 30). Each group was randomly divided into 3 subgroups according to the supplementary dentin pretreatment: ultrasound, Nd:YAG laser, and nonsupplemented (control). A self-etching adhesive system (Futurabond DC; VOCO GmbH, Cuxhaven, Germany) was used, and the glass fiber posts were cemented with dual-cure epoxy-based luting agent (Bifix QM, VOCO GmbH). All roots were sectioned transversely, and the push-out test was performed. Failure mode analysis was also evaluated.

RESULTS

Bond strength decreased significantly after the use of 2.5% NaOCl in all root thirds (P < .05). CHX showed no difference in the mean bond strength value compared with saline solution (P > .05). The supplementary dentin pretreatment using the Nd:YAG laser or ultrasound did not improve the bond strength values for both NaOCl and CHX (P > .05). Moreover, the apical third exhibited the lowest mean bond strength values (P < .05). Analysis indicated that the predominant failure mode was the mixed type.

CONCLUSIONS

Regardless of the irrigant used, the supplementary dentin pretreatment with ultrasound or laser irradiation showed no improvement in bond strength. Also, the use of NaOCl decreased the bond strength of glass fiber posts using a self-etching adhesive system, whereas CHX preserved it.

Influence of fiber post cementation length on coronal microleakage values in vitro and finite element analysis

AIM

This study aims to evaluate, the Influence of different fiber posts cementation lengths by finite element analysis (FEA) and coronal microleakage.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Fifty anterior bovine teeth were sectioned to obtain roots with 16 mm length. The coronal length of the post was 6 mm for all groups, while the radicular length were varied 6, 8, 10 or 12 mm. The fiber posts surfaces were cleaned with alcohol and silanized. Then the posts were cemented using a two steps total etch-and-rinse adhesive system + conventional resin cement. Forty teeth were submitted to mechanical cycling (45°; 2.000.000 cycles; 90N; 4Hz; 37°C) and ten teeth with radicular length of 12 mm was not submitted, ser ving as c ontrol. So, the experimental design was composed by different ratios of post coronal length/post radicular length and mechanical cycling (MC): Gr1- 1/1 + MC; Gr2- 3/4 + MC; Gr3- 3/5 + MC; Gr4- 1/2 + MC. All groups were immersed in a 1% toluidine blue solution. After 24 hours, the teeth were longitudinally sectioned and the microleakage scores was given by a blind operator. Data were submitted to Kruskal-Wallis test (p = 0.05). The experimental variables were simulated in two-dimensional finite element analysis (2D-FEA). The maximum principal stress distributions were compared.

RESULTS

No difference was observed in microleakage values between the cycled groups, whilst the control groups showed the lowest values. FEA analysis showed similar maximum principal stress distribution between the groups.

CONCLUSION

Mechanical cycling affected the values of coronal microleakage and different cementation length generated similar values of coronal microleakage and stress distribution.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

These results showed that from the microleakage point of view, more conservative cementation lengths have the same effect as longer cementation lengths.

Effect of energy density and delay time on the degree of conversion and Knoop microhardness of a dual resin cement

AIM

In the present study, we evaluated the influence of the photo-curing delay time and energy density on the degree of conversion and the Knoop microhardness of a resin cement.

METHODS

Seventy-eight samples were assigned to 13 groups (n = 6), one of which received no light curing (control). The samples were made of a dual-cured resin cement (RelyX ARC) with the aid of a Teflon matrix, submitted to one of the following energy densities (J/cm²): 7, 14, 20, and 28. Delay times were immediate (0), 1 min, or 2 min. After 24 h, the degree of conversion and microhardness were measured at three segments: cervical, medium, and apical. Data were submitted to three-way anova and Tukey's and Dunnett's tests, the latest of which was used to compare the control to the experimental groups.

RESULTS

No interaction was observed between delay time and energy density regarding the degree of conversion. The cervical segment showed the highest values, while the apical showed the lowest. Microhardness values concerning the cervical segment in all groups were statistically different from that obtained for the control.

CONCLUSION

A high-irradiance light-curing unit allows for a reduced irradiation exposure time with a short delay time, aimed at tooth restorations using a dual-cured resin cement.

Microhardness of dual-polymerized resin cement around a translucent fiber post in the intraradicular environment

Aim:

In this study, we evaluated the effect of photopolymerization on Vickers microhardness of dual-polymerized resin cement at three locations when a translucent quartz fiber post was used.

Materials and Methods:

Single-rooted bovine teeth received quartz fiber post systems (length: 12 mm) using a dual-polymerized resin cement. In Group 1, the posts were cemented but not photopolymerized, and in Group 2, the posts were both cemented and photopolymerized. After cementation, approximately 1.5-mm thick sections were obtained (two cervical, two middle, and two apical) for regional microhardness evaluations.

Statistical Analysis:

Statistical analyses were performed using the SPSS software (ver. 11.0 for Windows; SPSS, Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). Microhardness (kg/mm²) data were submitted to two-way analysis of variance (two-way ANOVA) and repeated measures with microhardness values as the dependent variable and polymerization status (two levels: with and without) and root region (three levels: cervical, middle, and apical) as independent variables. Multiple comparisons were made using Dunnett's T3 post-hoc test. P values of <0.05 were considered to indicate statistical significance in all tests.

Results:

Photopolymerization did not significantly change the microhardness values when compared with no photopolymerization. Microhardness values also showed no significant difference between the three regions in the root canals in both groups.

Conclusions:

The mode of polymerization of the cement tested in combination with the translucent quartz fiber post system did not affect the microhardness of the cement at the cervical, middle, or apical regions of the root.

Microhardness of different resin cement shades inside the root canal

Objectives: To compare microhardness along the root canal post space of two resin cements in different shades and a dual-cure resin core material. Study Design: Root canals of 21 bovine incisors were prepared for post space. Translucent posts (X•Post, Dentsply DeTrey) were luted using one the following resin luting agent: Calibra (Dentsply DeTrey) in Translucent, Medium and Opaque shades, RelyX Unicem (3M ESPE) in Translucent, A2 and A3 shades and the dual-cure resin core material Core•X flow. All materials were applied according to manufacturers’ instructions and were all photopolymerized (Bluephase LED unit, Ivoclar Vivadent, 40s). After 24 hours, roots were transversally cut into 9 slices 1 mm thick from the coronal to apical extremes, three corresponding to each root third. Then, VHNs were recorded (100 gf, 30 s) on the resin luting materials along the adhesive interface in all sections. Data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and SNK tests (α=0.05). Results: A significant influence on microhardness of resin luting material in their respective shades (p<0.001), root third (p<0.001) and interactions between them was detected (p<0.001). RelyX Unicem cement showed the highest microhardness values and Calibra the lowest, regardless of the shade selected. All resin luting materials tested exhibited a significantly higher microhardness in the cervical third. Conclusions: Microhardness of resin luting agents tested inside the canal is dependent on material brand and resin cement shade seems to be a less relevant factor. Microhardness decreased along the root canal, regardless of the shade selected.

Conventional dual-cure versus self-adhesive resin cements in dentin bond integrity

During post preparation, the root canal is exposed to the oral cavity, and endodontic treatment may fail because of coronal leakage, bacterial infection and sealing inability of the luting cement.

OBJECTIVE

this study quantified the interfacial continuity produced with conventional dual-cure and self-adhesive resin cements in the cervical (C), medium (M) and apical (A) thirds of the root.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Forty single-rooted human teeth were restored using Reforpost # 01 conical glass-fiber posts and different materials (N=10 per group): group AC=Adper™ ScotchBond™ Multi-purpose Plus + AllCem; group ARC=Adper™ ScotchBond™ Multi-purpose Plus + RelyX ARC; group U100=RelyX U100; and group MXC=Maxcem Elite. After being kept in 100% humidity at 37°C for 72 hours, the samples were sectioned parallel to their longitudinal axis and positive epoxy resin replicas were made. The scanning electron micrographs of each third section of the teeth were combined using Image Analyst software and measured with AutoCAD-2002. We obtained percentage values of the interfacial continuity.

RESULTS

Interfacial continuity was similar in the apical, medium and cervical thirds of the roots within the groups (Friedman test, p>0.05). Comparison of the different cements in a same root third showed that interfacial continuity was lower in MXC (C=45.5%; M=48.5%; A=47.3%) than in AC (C=85.9%, M=81.8% and A=76.0%), ARC (C=83.8%, M=82.4% and A=75.0%) and U100 (C=84.1%, M=82.4% and A=77.3%) (Kruskal-Wallis test, p<0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

Allcem, Rely X ARC and U100 provide the best cementation; cementation was similar among root portions; in practical terms, U100 is the best resin because it combines good cementation and easy application and none of the cements provides complete interfacial continuity.
