Ultra-fast light-curing resin composite with increased conversion and reduced monomer elution

The effect of photoinitiator type and filler load on physicochemical and mechanical properties of experimental light-cured resin cements through lithium disilicate ceramics of different shades and thicknesses

OBJECTIVE

This study investigated the influence of photoinitiator types on degree of conversion (DC), rate of polymerization (RP), flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus (FM), and light transmittance (LT) of filled and unfilled light-curable resin cements through different thicknesses and shades of lithium disilicate ceramics.

METHODS

Lithium disilicate ceramic discs (IPS Emax Press, background [0.0], 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, and 4.0 mm, shades A1 and BL3) were prepared. Experimental resin-based cements [TEGDMA/BisGMA (50/50 mass%)] were prepared using either camphorquinone (CQ)/amine (0.44/1.85 mol%) or TPO (0.44 mol%)], and a micro and nanofiller loads of nil (unfilled); 40/10 mass%; and 50/10 mass%). Resin cements (0.2 mm thick) were placed on the lower surface of the ceramic specimens and light-activated for 30 s from the upper surface using a Bluephase Style curing light (exitance at tip: 1236 mW/cm2 ± 1.20). LT and distribution of irradiance through the ceramics were measured using a UV-vis spectrometer and a beam profile camera, respectively (n = 3). The DC and RP were measured in real-time using mid infrared spectroscopy in attenuated total reflectance (ATR) mode (n = 3). FS and FM were measured using a universal testing machine (n = 5). Statistical analyses were performed on LT, DC, RP, FS, and FM data using a general linear model, and supplementary ANOVA and post hoc Tukey multiple comparison test were also performed (α = .05).

RESULTS

Thicknesses, shades, photoinitiator type, and fillers load significantly influenced the optical and mechanical characteristics of the resin-based materials (p < 0.05). The BL3 shade ceramic provided higher values of DC, RP, FS, FM, and LT compared with the A1 shade (p < 0.05). Increasing ceramic thickness decreased the properties of the resin-based materials (p < 0.05). Generally, TPO improved mechanical properties of the resin cement compared with CQ (p < 0.05).

SIGNIFICANCE

The luting process of indirect restorations may be improved by using high molar absorptivity, more reactive, and more efficient photoinitiators such as TPO, as opposed to conventional CQ. The use of such initiator may allow the placement of thicker and more opaque indirect restorations.

Effect of Post-Printing Conditions on the Mechanical and Optical Properties of 3D-Printed Dental Resin

This study aimed to evaluate the flexural strength (FS), surface wear, and optical properties of 3D-printed dental resins subjected to different post-printing conditions. A total of 240 specimens (2 × 2 × 25 mm³) were 3D-printed using resin materials for permanent (VaresoSmile Crown Plus) VSC and temporary (VaresoSmile Temp) VST restorations. Specimens underwent five post-printing conditions: no post-printing cure; post-cured in a Form Cure curing unit; Visio Beta Vacuum; Ivoclar Targis; or heat-cured (150 °C) for 30 min. Each group of specimens (n = 24) was tested either directly after post-curing, after 24 h of dry storage, or following hydrothermal accelerated aging in boiling water for 16 h. The three-point bending test was used to evaluate the FS. The two-body wear test was performed on 50 disc-shaped specimens (n = 5/group). Surface gloss and translucency were measured for permanent VSC specimens (n = 5/group). SEM/EDS and statistical analyses were performed. The Form Cure device yielded the highest FS and lowest wear depth (p < 0.05). Hydrothermal aging significantly reduced FS. There were no statistical differences in FS and wear values between materials subjected to same post-printing conditions. VSC groups exhibited similar optical properties across different post-printing treatments. Post-printing treatment conditions had a significant impact on the FS and wear of the 3D-printed resin, while optical properties remained unaffected.

Awareness of possible complications associated with direct composite restorations: A multinational survey among dentists from 13 countries with meta-analysis

OBJECTIVES

Resin-based composites (RBCs) evolved into favoured materials for teeth restorations, marking a significant change in dental practice. Despite many advantages, RBCs exhibit various limitations in their physical and chemical properties. Therefore, we assessed the dentists' awareness of possible complications after direct composite restorations and their opinions about this material.

METHODS

The online questionnaire was created in English in May 2023. A 16-item survey was dedicated to general dentists and specialists. The first section included four questions related to demographic characteristics. The second section comprised twelve questions and focused on awareness of potential side effects of composite restorations, the most crucial advantages and disadvantages of composite resins, and the frequency of experienced clinical complications after the application of composite materials.

RESULTS

A total of 1830 dentists from 13 countries took part in the survey. Dentists most often declared awareness of low adhesion to the dentine (77.5 %) and, most rarely, solubility in oral fluids (42.6 %). Aesthetics was identified as the main advantage of composite fillings (79 %), followed by the possibility of repair (59 %) and adhesion to enamel (57 %). Polymerisation shrinkage was a major disadvantage for most countries (70 % overall). Analysing the declared potential clinical complications for all countries, statistically significant findings were obtained for marginal discolouration (OR=2.982, 95 % CI: 1.321-6.730, p-value=0.009) and borderline significance for secondary caries (OR=1.814, 95 % CI: 0.964-3.415, p-value=0.065).

CONCLUSIONS

Dentists value aesthetics and repairability but are aware of shrinkage and experience discolouration. The issue of toxicity and solubility seems to be the least known to dentists.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Dentists should use RBCs with critical caution due to possible side effects. Despite the undoubted aesthetics of direct composite restorations, it is necessary to remember potential clinical complications such as marginal discolouration or secondary caries.

Evaluation of the Impact of Irradiance Lamps and Storage Media on Elution of TEGDMA from Dental Composites

OBJECTIVES

 The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the effect of irradiance light and storage media on the elution of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) from conventional Filtek Z350XT 3M ESPE and two bulk-fill composites Shofu Beautifil-Bulk and Filtek Bulk fill flowable 3M ESPE using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

MATERIALS AND METHODS

 Shofu Beautifil-Bulk, Filtek Bulk fill flowable 3M ESPE, and Filtek Z350XT 3M ESPE were the three types of composites used in this study. Disk shaped samples of 4-mm thickness and 10-mm diameter were fabricated using a stainless steel mold and were polymerized using light emitting diode (LED) and quartz tungsten halogen (QTH) lamps. After polymerization, the samples were immersed in ethanol, artificial saliva with betel quid extract, and distilled water for 1, 7, and 30 days, respectively. The elution of monomer TEGDMA was evaluated using HPLC.

STATISTICAL ANALYSIS

 To evaluate the mean concentration difference, mixed way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied. Between different light, materials, and within the time duration, Tukey's post hoc test was used. A p value of 0.05 was considered significant.

RESULTS

 During the first day of storage, a significant amount of monomer TEGDMA elution was seen in all the materials. The highest values observed to be in the disks cured with QTH lamp. However, the highest elution was seen when the disks were immersed in ethanol/water solution. While the most stable medium was distilled water, artificial saliva with betel nut extract also had a significant effect on the elution of TEGDMA. The highest value obtained was of Filtek Bulk fill flowable 3M ESPE after 30 days of immersion in both LED and QTH cured disks.

CONCLUSION

 Filtek Bulk fill flowable 3M ESPE shows better properties in relation to the release of monomer TEGDMA as it releases less amount of monomer in the storage media. The release of monomer was highest in ethanol as compared to artificial saliva and distilled water with the passage of time.

Short curing time bulk fill composite systems: volumetric shrinkage, degree of conversion and Vickers hardness

This study aimed to evaluate volumetric polymerization shrinkage, degree of conversion and Vickers hardness of four bulk-fill resin composites light-activated with their dedicated light curing units (LCUs). Four groups were evaluated, according to the type of composite and curing mode: Tetric EvoCeram Bulk-fill (TEBO) and Tetric EvoFlow Bulk-fill (TEBF) were light-activated with Bluephase Style 20i (20s, in high-mode), while Tetric Powerfill (TEPO) and Tetric Powerflow (TEPF) were light-activated with Bluephase PowerCure (3s). Volumetric polymerization shrinkage test (n = 6) was performed in standardized box-shaped class-I cavities of extracted third molars (4 x 4 x 4 mm). Teeth were scanned before and after resin composite application by micro-computed tomography, and acquired data were evaluated with Amira software. Degree of conversion (n = 5) was evaluated at the top and bottom surfaces of composite cylindric samples (4 mm diameter, 4 mm thickness) using an FT-IR spectrometer (spectra between 1,500 and 1,800 cm-1, 40 scans at a resolution of 4 cm-1). Three Vickers indentations (50 g / 15 s), spaced 500 μm apart, were performed on the top and bottom composite surfaces and averaged. One-way ANOVA was used for data evaluation. TEPF showed the lowest volumetric polymerization shrinkage (p < 0.05), while the other composites were not significantly different within each other (p > 0.05). All materials presented a significant decrease in degree of conversion and Vickers hardness when compared top to bottom surfaces (p < 0.05). Bottom to top surface ratios for degree of conversion ranged from 0.8 (TEBO and TEPO) to 0.9 (TEBF and TEPF), and from 0.4 (TEPO) to 0.7 (TEBF and TEPF) for hardness. In conclusion, resinous materials present a decrease in hardness and degree of conversion from top to bottom even when a higher power is used, while the flowable material TEPF showed the lowest volumetric shrinkage values compared to the other materials.

The power of light - From dental materials processing to diagnostics and therapeutics

Harnessing the power of light and its photonic energy is a powerful tool in biomedical applications. Its use ranges from biomaterials processing and fabrication of polymers to diagnostics and therapeutics. Dental light curable materials have evolved over several decades and now offer very fast (≤ 10 s) and reliable polymerization through depth (4-6 mm thick). This has been achieved by developments on two fronts: (1) chemistries with more efficient light absorption characteristics (camphorquinone [CQ], ~30 L mol-1 cm1 [ʎmax 470 nm]; monoacylphosphine oxides [MAPO], ~800 L mol-1 cm-1 [ʎmax 385 nm]; bisacylphosphine oxide [BAPO], ~1,000 L mol-1 cm-1 [ʎmax 385 nm]) as well mechanistically efficient and prolonged radical generation processes during and after light irradiation, and; (2) introducing light curing technologies (light emitting diodes [LEDs] and less common lasers) with higher powers (≤ 2 W), better spectral range using multiple diodes (short: 390-405 nm; intermediate: 410-450 nm; and long: 450-480 nm), and better spatial power distribution (i.e. homogenous irradiance). However, adequate cure of materials falls short for several reasons, including improper selection of materials and lights, limitations in the chemistry of the materials, and limitations in delivering light through depth. Photonic energy has further applications in dentistry which include transillumination for diagnostics, and therapeutic applications that include photodynamic therapy, photobiomodulation, and photodisinfection. Light interactions with materials and biological tissues are complex and it is important to understand the advantages and limitations of these interactions for successful treatment outcomes. This article highlights the advent of photonic technologies in dentistry, its applications, the advantages and limitations, and possible future developments.

Temperature rise in photopolymerized adhesively-bonded resin composite: A thermography study

OBJECTIVES

To assess visually and quantitatively the contributions of the adhesive layer photopolymerization and the subsequent resin composite increment to spatio-temporal maps of temperature at five different cavity locations, subjected to two irradiance curing protocols: standard and ultra-high.

METHODS

Caries-free molars were used to obtain 40, 2 mm thick dentin slices, randomly assigned to groups (n = 5). These slices were incorporated within 3D-printed model cavites, 4 mm deep, restored with Adhese® Universal bonding agent and 2 mm thick Tetric® Powerfill resin composite, and photocured sequentially, as follows: G1: control-empty cavity; G2: adhesive layer; G3 composite layer with no adhesive; and G4 composite layer with adhesive. The main four groups were subdivided based on two curing protocols, exposed either to standard 10 s (1.2 W/cm2) or Ultra high 3 s (3 W/cm2) irradiance modes using a Bluephase PowerCure LCU. Temperature maps were obtained, via a thermal imaging camera, and numerically analyzed at 5 locations. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA followed by multiple one-way ANOVA, independent t-tests and Tukey post-hoc tests (α = 0.05). Tmax, ΔT, Tint (integrated area under the curve) and time-to-reach-maximum-temperature were evaluated.

RESULTS

Two-way ANOVA showed that there was no significant interaction between light-curing time and location on the measured parameters (p > 0.05), except for the time-to-reach-maximum-temperature (p < 0.05). Curing the adhesive layer alone with the 10 s protocol resulted in a significantly increased pulpal roof temperature compared to 3 s cure (p < 0.05). Independent T-tests between G3 and G4, between 3 s and 10 s, confirmed that the adhesive agent caused no significant increases (p > 0.05) on the measured parameters. The ultra-high light-curing protocol significantly increased ΔT in composite compared to 10 s curing (p < 0.05).

SIGNIFICANCE

When the adhesive layer was photocured alone in a cavity, with a 2 mm thick dentin floor, the exothermal release of energy resulted in higher temperatures with a 10 s curing protocol, compared to a 3 s high irradiance. But when subsequently photocuring a 2 mm layer of composite, the resultant temperatures generated at pulpal roof location from the two curing protocols were similar and therefore there was no increased hazard to the dental pulp from the immediately prior adhesive photopolymerization, cured via the ultra-high irradiation protocol.

Interblock and intrablock homogeneity of CAD-CAM composites mechanical properties

The purpose of this study was to characterize the homogeneity of the mechanical properties of commercial CAD-CAM composites between different blocks of the same material (interblock homogeneity) and within each block between the internal and external parts (intrablock homogeneity). Tetric CAD (TET); Katana Avencia (KAT); Cerasmart 270 (CER); Grandio (GRN) and Vita Enamic (ENA) were tested for flexural strength (σf), flexural modulus (Ef), flexural load energy (Ur) and hardness (HV). Results showed significant differences in interblock homogeneity of σf, Ef and Ur for TET, KAT, CER and ENA. In addition, significant differences in interblock homogeneity of HV for TET, CER and GRN were found. Moreover, significant differences in intrablock homogeneity of σf, Ef and Ur were found for KAT, CER, GRN and ENA, as well as for HV of all the tested materials except CER. Weibull modulus was highest for GRN, followed by ENA, KAT, TET then CER.

The effect of quaternary ammonium polyethylenimine nanoparticles on bacterial adherence, cytotoxicity, and physical and mechanical properties of experimental dental composites

A significant problem related to the functioning of resin-based composites for dental fillings is secondary or recurrent caries, which is the reason for the need for repeated treatment. The cross-linked quaternary ammonium polyethylenimine nanoparticles (QA-PEI-NPs) have been shown to be a promising antibacterial agent against different bacteria, including cariogenic ones. However, little is known about the properties of dental dimethacrylate polymer-based composites enriched with QA-PEI-NPs. This research was carried out on experimental composites based on bis-GMA/UDMA/TEGDMA matrix enriched with 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 and 3 (wt%) QA-PEI-NPs and reinforced with two glass fillers. The cured composites were tested for their adherence of Streptococcus Mutans bacteria, cell viability (MTT assay) with 48 h and 10-days extracts , degree of conversion (DC), water sorption (WSO), and solubility (WSL), water contact angle (CA), flexural modulus (E), flexural strength (FS), compressive strength (CS), and Vickers microhardness (HV). The investigated materials have shown a complete reduction in bacteria adherence and satisfactory biocompatibility. The QA-PEI-NPs additive has no effect on the DC, VH, and E values. QA-PEI-NPs increased the CA (a favorable change), the WSO and WSL (unfavorable changes) and decreased flexural strength, and compressive strength (unfavorable changes). The changes mentioned were insignificant and acceptable for most composites, excluding the highest antibacterial filler content. Probably the reason for the deterioration of some properties was low compatibility between filler particles and the matrix; therefore, it is worth extending the research by surface modification of QA-PEI-NPs to achieve the optimum performance characteristics.

Formulation, Configuration, and Physical Properties of Dental Composite Resin Containing a Novel 2π + 2π Photodimerized Crosslinker - Cinnamyl Methacrylate: An In Vitro Research

AIM

To formulate and characterize the chemical structure of a new dental composite with photodimerized cinnamyl methacrylate (PD-CMA) photo-crosslinking comonomer and to evaluate the monomer-to-polymer conversion (MPC) and glass transition temperature (Tg) of the new composite copolymers.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

CMA was PD by ultraviolet C-type (UVC) irradiation. The research groups were a control group C0 without PD-CMA and two trial groups: E10 (10 wt. % PD-CMA substituted in the base comonomers (B) and diluent (D) mixture); E20 (20 wt.% PD-CMA completely replacing the diluent (D) monomer). Infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopies were employed for ascertaining copolymerization (CP). The surface features and composition of the copolymers were explained by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, respectively. The MPC and Tg of the copolymers were assessed using FTIR and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. Statistical tests were used to compare the groups.

RESULTS

The configuration of the new copolymers P (BD-Co-CMA) and P(B-Co-CMA) was confirmed. The MPC% and T g of the copolymers were better than the control. PD-CMA at 20 wt. % in the P (B-Co-CMA) copolymer exhibited the highest MPC% and Tg.

CONCLUSION

The incorporation of PD-CMA in the composite resin resulted in new P (BD-Co-CMA) and P (B-Co-CMA) copolymers with improved MPC% and Tg.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

The substitution with PD-CMA offset the shortcomings of the conventional BD comonomers concerning the mechanical properties and biocompatibility of the restorative composite resin. This might ameliorate the restorations in vivo longevity and serviceability.

The effect of high-irradiance rapid polymerization on degree of conversion, monomer elution, polymerization shrinkage and porosity of bulk-fill resin composites

OBJECTIVE

The purpose was to compare the degree of conversion (DC), monomer elution (ME), polymerization shrinkage (PS) and porosity of two addition-fragmentation chain transfer (AFCT) modified resin-based composites (RBC) light-cured with rapid- (RP), turbo- (TP) or conventional polymerization (CP) settings.

METHODS

Cylindrical samples (6-mm wide, 4-mm thick) were prepared from Tetric PowerFill (TPF) and Filtek One Bulk (FOB). Four groups were established according to the polymerization settings: 3s-RP, 5s-TP, 10s-CP and 20s-CP. Samples in 1 mm thickness with 20s-CP settings served as controls. The DC at the top and bottom surfaces was measured with micro-Raman spectroscopy. ME was detected with high-performance liquid chromatography. PS and porosity were analyzed by micro-computed tomography. ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test, multivariate analysis and partial eta-squared statistics were used to analyze the data (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

FOB showed higher DC values (61.5-77.5 %) at the top compared to TPF (43.5-67.8 %). At the bottom TPF samples achieved higher DCs (39.9-58.5 %) than FOB (18.21-66.18 %). Extending the curing time increased DC (except the top of FOB) and decreased ME. BisGMA release was the highest among the detected monomers from both RBCs. The amount was three-fold more from TPF. The factor Material and Exposure significantly influenced DC and ME. PS (1.8-2.5 %) did not differ among the groups and RBCs except for the lowest value of TPF cured with the 3s_RP setting (p = 0.03). FOB showed 4.5-fold lower porosity (p < 0.001). Significantly higher pore volume was detected after polymerization in 3s_RP (p < 0.001).

SIGNIFICANCE

High-irradiance rapid 3-s curing of AFCT modified RBCs resulted in inferior results for some important material properties. A longer exposure time is recommended in a clinical situation.

Effect of High-radiant Emittance and Short Curing Time on Polymerization Shrinkage Vectors of Bulk Fill Composites

PURPOSE

To evaluate the effect of short curing time using a high-radiant emittance light on polymerization shrinkage vectors in different consistency bulk-fill composites (BFRCs) using micro-computed tomography.

METHODS AND MATERIALS

Radiopaque zirconia fillers were homogeneously incorporated and functioned as radiopaque tracers into two regular-paste: TBFill (Tetric EvoCeram Bulk Fill) and TPFill (Tetric PowerFill), and two flowable (n=6): TBFlow (Tetric EvoFlow Bulk Fill) and TPFlow (Tetric PowerFlow) resin composites. Class I cavities (4 mm depth × 4 mm length × 4 mm width) were 3D-printed and filled in a single increment: TBFill and TBFlow were light-activated using a Bluephase Style 20i (10 seconds in high-mode); TPFill and TPFlow were light-activated using a Bluephase PowerCure (three seconds). The same adhesive system (Adhese Universal) was used for all groups. Microcomputed tomography scans were obtained before and after light-activation. Filler particle movement was identified by polymerization shrinkage vectors at five depths (from 0-4 mm): top, top-middle, middle, middle-bottom and bottom.

RESULTS

TPFlow showed the lowest total vector displacement, followed by TBFlow, TBFill and TPFill, significantly different among each other (p<0.05). Generally, BFRCs showed decreased vector displacement with increased depth, and higher displacement at the top-surface (p<0.05). Qualitative analysis showed a similar pattern of vector magnitude and displacement for groups TBFill and TPFill, with displacement vectors on occlusal (top) surfaces toward the center of the restoration from the top to middle areas, and relatively limited displacement at the bottom. TBFlow and TPFlow showed more displacement on the occlusal (top).

CONCLUSIONS

Short curing time with high-radiant emittance on fast-curing BFRCs was shown to be a feasible option in terms of vector displacement. Flowable BFRCs presented lower vector displacement than their regular-viscosity versions.

Effect of Fast High-Irradiance Photo-Polymerization of Resin Composites on the Dentin Bond Strength

This study investigated the influence of conventional (10 s at 1160 mW/cm²) and fast high-irradiance (3 s at 2850 mW/cm²) light curing on the micro-tensile bond strength (μTBS) of bulk-fill resin composites bonded to human dentin. Sixty-four extracted human molars were ground to dentin and randomly assigned into eight groups (n = 8 per group). After application of a three-step adhesive system (Optibond FL), four different bulk-fill composites (two sculptable and two flowable composites) were placed. Of these, one sculptable (Tetric PowerFill) and one flowable (Tetric PowerFlow) composite were specifically developed for fast high-irradiance light curing. Each composite was polymerized with the conventional or the fast high-irradiance light-curing protocol. The specimens were cut into dentin-composite sticks, μTBS was determined and failure modes were analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed using t-test for independent observations and one-way ANOVA. A statistical difference between the curing protocols was only found for Tetric PowerFlow, where the conventional protocol (23.8 ± 4.2 MPa) led to significantly higher values than the fast high-irradiance light-curing protocol (18.7 ± 3.7 MPa). All other composite materials showed statistically similar values for both polymerization protocols. In conclusion, the use of fast high-irradiation light curing has no negative influence on the μTBS of the investigated high-viscosity bulk-fill composites. However, it may reduce the dentin bond strength of flowable bulk-fill composite.

Quality of Cure in Depth of Commercially Available Bulk-fill Composites: A Layer-by-layer Mechanical and Biological Evaluation

Despite their popularity, the use of bulk-fill composites remains controversial, both in terms of their properties and their in-depth development. The objectives of the present work were (1) to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of the quality of cure in depth of commercially available bulk-fill composites by combining various key mechanical and biological characterization methods, (2) to evaluate the inter-material differences when optimally cured, and (3) to evaluate the efficiency of an antioxidant-N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC)-to restrain the adverse effects of the leached components on cell viability. Nine bulk-fill composites (including flowable and high-viscosity materials) were investigated and compared to two conventional resin-based composites, one flowable and one high-viscosity restorative material. The materials were injected or packed into Teflon molds of various configurations, up to 6 mm material thickness. They were then light-cured from the top for 20 seconds with Bluephase G2 (Ivoclar Vivadent, irradiance = 1050 mW/cm2). The following physicomechanical properties were measured for the upper (0-2 mm), intermediate (2-4 mm), and lower (4-6 mm) layers: degree of conversion using Raman Spectrometry (DC, in %), microhardness using a Vickers micro-indenter before (VHN dry) and after 24 hours of storage in ethanol (VHN EtOH), and flexural strength (in MPa) and flexural modulus (in GPa) using a three-point bend test. Each composite layer and an uncured layer were also stored for one week in a standard cell growth medium to generate conditioned media. Human dental pulp cells were then cultured for 24 hours with the latter and cell viability was measured using an MTS assay. A similar experiment was repeated with conditioned media produced in contact with uncured composites, with and without the addition of 4 mM NAC. The data were subjected to a Shapiro-Wilk test, then one-way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis test, followed either by Tukey's test (inter-material comparison) or by Dunnett's or Dunn's test (comparison between layers relative to the upper one). The level of statistical significance was set at 0.05. Some materials (EverX, X-traF, VenusBF, X-traB) did not show any significant differences (p>0.05) for any of the properties considered between the intermediate layers compared to the upper one (considered as reference). Others displayed significant differences, at least for some properties, highlighting the value of combining various key mechanical and biological characterization methods when investigating the quality of cure in depth. Significant inter-material differences (p<0.05) were observed when comparing the properties of their upper layer, considered as "optimally" polymerized. Hence, one needs to consider the absolute property values, not only their relative evolution concerning layer thickness. Finally, the use of NAC appeared as beneficial to reduce the risk of harmful effects to dental pulp cells, especially in case of excessive thickness use, and may therefore be of potential interest as an additive to composites in the future.

Meta-analytical analysis on components released from resin-based dental materials

OBJECTIVES

Resin-based materials are applied in every branch of dentistry. Due to their tendency to release substances in the oral environment, doubts have been raised about their actual safety. This review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the last decade literature regarding the concentrations of elutable substances released from dental resin-based materials in different type of solvents.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

All the literature published on dental journals between January 2010 and April 2022 was searched using international databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science). Due to strict inclusion criteria, only 23 papers out of 877 were considered eligible. The concentration of eluted substances related to surface and volume of the sample was analyzed, considering data at 24 h as a reference. The total cumulative release was examined as well.

RESULTS

The most eluted substances were HEMA, TEGDMA, and BPA, while the less eluted were Bis-GMA and UDMA. Organic solvents caused significantly higher release of substances than water-based ones. A statistically significant inverse correlation between the release of molecules and their molecular mass was observed. A statistically significant positive correlation between the amount of released molecule and the specimen surface area was detected, as well as a weak positive correlation between the release and the specimen volume.

CONCLUSIONS

Type of solvent, molecular mass of eluates, and specimen surface and volume affect substances release from materials.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

It could be advisable to rely on materials based on monomers with a reduced elution tendency for clinical procedures.

Postpolymerization of a 3D-printed denture base polymer: Impact of post-curing methods on surface characteristics, flexural strength, and cytotoxicity

OBJECTIVE

This study investigated the influence of postpolymerization of a three-dimensional (3D) printed denture base polymer. The effect of post-curing methods on surface characteristics, flexural strength, and cytotoxicity was evaluated.

METHODS

A total of 172 specimens were additively manufactured using one denture base material (V-Print dentbase, VOCO) and further post-cured by different light-curing devices, including Otoflash G171 (OF), Labolight DUO (LL), PCU LED (PCU), and LC-3DPrintbox (PB), respectively. Polymethyl methacrylate resin (PalaExpress Ultra) was used as a reference (REF). Afterward, surface topography was observed using scanning electron microscopy, and surface roughness was measured (n = 6). Furthermore, flexural strength was tested (n = 20). Cytotoxicity was evaluated by the extract and direct contact tests. The data were analyzed using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's multiple comparisons and Kruskal-Wallis tests (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

The different post-curing methods applied did not significantly influence surface topography and roughness (Ra). Meanwhile, specimens post-cured by PCU (162.3 ± 44.16 MPa) and PB (171.2 ± 34.41 MPa) showed significantly higher flexural strength than those post-cured by OF (131.3 ± 32.87 MPa) and REF (131.2 ± 19.19 MPa), respectively. Additionally, various post-curing methods effectively decreased the cytotoxic effects of 3D-printed denture base polymer.

CONCLUSIONS

Different post-curing methods did not significantly alter the Ra values of the 3D-printed denture base material. However, flexural strength was significantly affected by the postpolymerization methods, which might be attributed to the different wavelengths of post-curing devices. In addition, various postpolymerization methods reduced the cytotoxic effects of the 3D-printed denture base polymer.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Flexural strength of additively manufactured denture bases depends on the postpolymerization strategy. Therefore, an appropriate post-curing method is required to optimize the flexural strength of 3D-printed denture materials.

The Effect of Incorporating Different Concentrations of Octenidine Dihydrochloride on the Degree of Conversion of an Experimental Flowable Resin Composite

BACKGROUND: One of the important parameters in assessing the definitive physical, mechanical, and biological characteristics of resin composites is the degree of conversion (DC), as composite qualities have been proven to improve with increasing the DC after photo-polymerization. Besides, fracture or secondary caries are the most common causes of composite resin failure. Accordingly, this reflects the need of formulating dental restorative materials possessing antibacterial activity. AIM: This study was designed to incorporate different concentrations of a new antibacterial agent (Octenidine dihydrochloride [OCT]) into an experimentally formulated flowable resin composite and evaluate its DC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four groups were tested in this study; group I was used as the control group, it’s a commercially available flowable composite “Herculite Ultra Flowable”. Group II was an experimental flowable composite with no antibacterial agent. During the preparation of the experimental flowable resin composite material, OCT antibacterial agent was added to the filler in special dark containers at a concentration of 1% wt. and 1.5% wt. respectively, in groups III and IV. The DC was measured and compared to the commercially available resin composite using the Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy method. RESULTS: Results of the current study showed that the mean values of DC ranged between (70.37 and 48.7), where Group1 showed the highest mean value, followed by Group 2 than Group 3, Group 4 specimens had the lowest mean value. The data showed that there is a statistically significant difference between all the tested groups. However, the DC was still within the accepted ranges for dental use. CONCLUSION: Based on the results obtained within the experimental conditions of this study it may be stated that the inclusion of the antibacterial OCT 1% and 1.5% wt., into the flowable resin composite showed satisfactory results for the DC as it met the ADA requirements for clinical use.

Mechanical Properties of Experimental Composites with Different Photoinitiator

Objective  The effect of different photoinitiators on mechanical properties of experimental composites was evaluated.

Materials and Methods  Resin composites were formulated by using a blend of bisphenol A-glycidyl and triethylene glycol (50/50 wt%) dimethacrylate monomers, and 65 wt% of barium aluminium silicate and silica filler particles. Photoinitiators used were 0.2% camphorquinone (CQ) and 0.8% co-initiator (DMAEMA); 0.2% phenyl-propanedione and 0.8% DMAEMA; 0.1% CQ + 0.1% phenyl propanedione and 0.8% DMAEMA; 0.42% mono(acyl)phosphine oxide (MAPO); and 0.5% bis(acyl)phosphine oxide (BAPO). Specimens ( n = 10) were light cured by using a multiple-emission peak light-emitting diode for 20 seconds at 1,200 mW/cm ² of irradiance and Knoop hardness and plasticization, depth of cure, flexural strength, and elastic modulus were evaluated. Data were statiscally analyzed at significance level of α = 5%.

Results  Experimental composites containing MAPO and BAPO photoinitiators showed the highest values of flexural strength, elastic modulus, top surface hardness, and lower hardness reduction caused by alcohol compared with CQ. Composites containing CQ and PPD showed similar results, except for depth of cure and hardness of bottom surface.

Conclusion  BAPO and MAPO showed higher flexural strength, elastic modulus, hardness on top surface, and lower polymer plasticization to CQ.

Monomer Conversion, Dimensional Stability, Biaxial Flexural Strength, Ion Release, and Cytotoxicity of Resin-Modified Glass Ionomer Cements Containing Methacrylate-Functionalized Polyacids and Spherical Pre-Reacted Glass Fillers

The aim of this study was to prepare RMGICs for pulp protection that contain polyacids functionalized with methacrylate groups (CMs) to enable light-activated polymerization without the need for toxic 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) monomers. The effects of using CM liquids with 0 or 5 wt% HEMA on the physical/mechanical properties and cytotoxicity of the experimental RMGICs were assessed. Spherical pre-reacted glass fillers (SPG) were used as the powder phase. The experimental RMGICs were prepared by mixing SPG with CM liquid (0 wt% HEMA, F1) or CMH liquid (5 wt% HEMA, F2). Commercial materials (Vitrebond, VB; TheraCal LC, TC) were used for the comparisons. The degree of monomer conversion and fluoride release of both F1 and F2 were significantly lower than those of VB. F1 showed comparable biaxial flexural strength with VB but higher strength than TC. The dimensional stability (mass/volume changes) of the experimental materials was comparable with that of the commercial materials. F1 and F2 exhibited higher Sr/Ca ion release and relative cell viability than VB. The use of CMH liquid reduced the strength but enhanced the fluoride release of the experimental RMGICs. In conclusion, the experimental RMGICs showed comparable strength but lower cytotoxicity compared to the commercial RMGICs. These novel materials could be used as alternative materials for pulp protection.

Light Transmittance and Depth of Cure of a Bulk Fill Composite Based on the Exposure Reciprocity Law

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the exposure reciprocity law of a multi-wave light-emitting diode (LED) on the light transmittance (LT), depth of cure (DOC) and degree of conversion in-depth (DC) of a bulk fill composite. A bulk fill composite (EvoCeram® bulk fill, Ivoclar Vivadent) was photoactivated using the multi-wave LED (VALO™ Cordless, Ultradent). The LED was previously characterized using a spectrophotometer to standardize the time of exposure when using the Standard or Xtra-Power modes with the same radiant exposure of 20J/cm2. LT was evaluated through samples of the bulk fill composite every millimeter till 4 mm in-depth. DOC was evaluated according to the ISO 4049. DC of the central longitudinal cross-section from each sample of the DOC test was mapped using FT-NIR microscopy. Data were statistically analyzed according to the experimental design (α=0.05; ß=0.2). The radiant exposure in the violet wavelength range for Standard and Xtra-Power was 4.5 and 5.0 J/cm2, respectively; for the blue wavelength range the radiant exposure for Standard and Xtra-Power was 15.5 and 15.0 J/cm2, respectively. There was no statistical difference in the DOC using Standard or Xtra-Power light-curing modes, but the DOC was lower than the claimed by the manufacturer (4 mm). The DC was not significantly affected by the light-curing mode up to 4 mm in depth (p>0.05). According to exposure reciprocity law, the reduction in exposure time using the same radiant exposure did not affect the depth of cure of the bulk fill composite.

Rapid 3 s Curing: What Happens in Deep Layers of New Bulk-Fill Composites?

This study assessed the influence of rapid 3 s light curing on the new generation of bulk-fill resin composites under the simulated aging challenge and depths up to 4 mm. Four bulk-fill materials were tested: two materials designed for rapid curing (Tetric PowerFill—PFILL; Tetric PowerFlow—PFLW) and two regular materials (Filtek One Bulk Fill Restorative—FIL; SDR Plus Bulk Fill Flowable—SDR). Three-point bending (n = 10) was used to measure flexural strength (FS) and flexural modulus (FM). In the 3 s group, two 2 mm thick specimens were stacked to obtain 4 mm thickness, while 2 mm-thick specimens were used for ISO group. Specimens were aged for 1, 30, or 30 + 3 days in ethanol. The degree of conversion (DC) up to 4 mm was measured by Raman spectroscopy. There was no difference between curing protocols in FS after 1 day for all materials except PFLW. FM was higher for all materials for ISO curing protocol. Mechanical properties deteriorated by increasing depth (2–4 mm) and aging. ISO curing induced higher DC for PFLW and FIL, while 3 s curing was sufficient for PFILL and SDR. The 3 s curing negatively affected FM of all tested materials, whereas its influence on FS and DC was highly material-specific.

Optimization of Plasmonic Gold Nanoparticle Concentration in Green LED Light Active Dental Photopolymer

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) display surface plasmon resonance (SPR) as a result of their irradiation at a targeted light frequency. SPR also results in heat production that increases the temperature of the surrounding environment, affecting polymerization. The aim was to investigate the SPR effect of AuNPs on a dimethacrylate-based photopolymer system. The tested composites were designed to overlap the illumination required for the polymerization and the plasmon effect. The 5 nm-sized dodecanethiol capped AuNPs were applied in different concentrations in the matrix that were irradiated with green light (λ = 532 nm), where the Irgacure 784 photoinitiator also absorbs the light. The plasmonic effect was investigated for the refractive index change by surface plasmon resonance imaging (SPRi) supplemented by ellipsometry. Moreover, optical transmission and transmission electron micrographs (TEM), diametral tensile stress (DTS), and confocal Raman spectroscopy was performed to determine the degree of conversion (DC) at 1.0, 1.4, and 2.0 mW/cm² light intensities. It was found that the optimal conditions were at 0.0208 wt% AuNPs concentration and 1.4 mW/cm² light intensity at which the refractive index change, DTS, and DC data were all maximal. The study confirmed that AuNPs are applicable to improve the polymerization efficiency of dental composite resin.

Long-Term Stability of a RAFT-Modified Bulk-Fill Resin-Composite under Clinically Relevant Versus ISO-Curing Conditions

The addition of RAFT (reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer) agents to the matrix formulation of a bulk-fill resin composite can significantly decrease the required curing time down to a minimum of 3 s. Evaluating the long term-stability of this resin composite in relation to varied curing conditions in an in-vitro environment was this study’s goal. Specimens were produced according to either an ISO or one of two clinical curing protocols and underwent a maximum of three successive aging procedures. After each one of the aging procedures, 30 specimens for each curing condition were extracted for a three-point bending test. Fragments were then stereo-microscopically characterized according to their fracture mechanism. Weibull analysis was used to quantify the reliability of each aging and curing combination. Selected fragments (n = 12) underwent further testing via depth-sensing indentation. Mechanical values for either standardized or clinical curing were mostly comparable. However, changes in fracture mechanism and Weibull modulus were observed after each aging procedure. The final procedure exposed significant differences in the mechanical values due to curing conditions. Curing conditions with increased radiant exposure seemingly result in a higher crosslink in the polymer-matrix, thus increasing resistance to aging. Yet, the clinical curing conditions still resulted in acceptable mechanical values, proving the effectiveness of RAFT-polymerization.

Bis(4-methyl phenyl)iodonium as an alternative component to diphenyliodonium in camphorquinone-based ternary initiating systems

OBJECTIVE

To evaluate the influence of different co-initiators (diphenyliodonium hexafluorophosphate - DPI - and bis(4-methyl phenyl)iodonium hexafluorophosphate - BPI) on chemical and mechanical properties of resins.

METHODS

Nine experimental resins (50% Bis-GMA and 50% TEGDMA, w/w) with 60 wt% filler particles were formulated. The initiating system used was camphorquinone (CQ-1 mol%) and ethyl dimethylaminobenzoate (EDAB-2 mol%). Experimental groups were established according to DPI and BPI quantities (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1 mol%). The control group was a resin containing only CQ-EDAB. Light transmission through the resin during polymerisation was analysed with a UV-vis spectrophotometer. Real-time polymerisation of the systems was evaluated using an FTIR spectrometer. Real-time polymerisation shrinkage strain was evaluated, and the flexural strength and modulus of materials were obtained by 3-point bending. Experimental groups were statistically analysed by Analysis of Variance and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Dunnett's test was applied to compare experimental groups with control.

RESULTS

Light transmission rapidly increased initially for resins containing DPI or BPI. After 30 s cure, the irradiance on the lower surface of resin specimens was similar for all groups. After 10 s of light irradiation, groups containing DPI and BPI had higher conversion than the control. However, conversion after 120 s post-irradiation was similar for all groups. The rate of polymerisation, shrinkage strain, and the maximum strain rate were higher for groups containing DPI/BPI. The use of iodonium salts increased the flexural strength and flexural moduli of resins.

SIGNIFICANCE

DPI and BPI increased resin reactivity similarly. Increased rate of polymerization influenced light transmission through the resin in the first seconds of polymerisation and increased resin shrinkage and rate of shrinkage, as well as flexural strength and moduli.

The effect of rapid high-intensity light-curing on micromechanical properties of bulk-fill and conventional resin composites

Rapid high-intensity light-curing of dental resin composites is attractive from a clinical standpoint due to the prospect of time-savings. This study compared the effect of high-intensity (3 s with 3,440 mW/cm²) and conventional (10 s with 1,340 mW/cm²) light-curing on micromechanical properties of conventional and bulk-fill resin composites, including two composites specifically designed for high-intensity curing. Composite specimens were prepared in clinically realistic layer thicknesses. Microhardness (MH) was measured on the top and bottom surfaces of composite specimens 24 h after light-curing (initial MH), and after subsequent immersion for 24 h in absolute ethanol (ethanol MH). Bottom/top ratio for initial MH was calculated as a measure of depth-dependent curing effectiveness, whereas ethanol/initial MH ratio was calculated as a measure of crosslinking density. High-intensity light-curing showed a complex material-dependent effect on micromechanical properties. Most of the sculptable composites showed no effect of the curing protocol on initial MH, whereas flowable composites showed 11–48% lower initial MH for high-intensity curing. Ethanol/initial MH ratios were improved by high-intensity curing in flowable composites (up to 30%) but diminished in sculptable composites (up to 15%). Due to its mixed effect on MH and crosslinking density in flowable composites, high-intensity curing should be used with caution in clinical work.

Chemistry of novel and contemporary resin-based dental adhesives

The chemistry of resin-based dental adhesives is critical for its interaction with dental tissues and long-term bonding stability. Changes in dental adhesives composition influences the materials' key physical-chemical properties, such as rate and degree of conversion, water sorption, solubility, flexural strength and modulus, and cohesive strength and improves the biocompatibility to dental tissues. Maintaining a suitable reactivity between photoinitiators and monomers is important for optimal properties of adhesive systems, in order to enable adequate polymerisation and improved chemical, physical and biological properties. The aim of this article is to review the current state-of-the-art of dental adhesives, and their chemical composition and characteristics that influences the polymerisation reaction and subsequent materials properties and performance.

Synthesis of an anti-cariogenic experimental dental composite containing novel drug-decorated copper particles

Secondary caries is one of the most major cause for re-placement of dental composite restorations. Targeting the survival of cariogenic bacteria residing on the restoration surface may reduce this problem. The present study aims to evaluate the antibacterial potential as well as assess the physical and chemical properties of experimental dental composites containing novel drug-decorated copper particles (DDCP) as adjunct antibacterial filler particles. These were incorporated at concentrations of 0%, 0.5%, 0.10%, 0.20%, and 0.25% (w/w) into experimental composite consisting of methacrylate monomers and silanized silica fillers. RESULTS: Direct contact test revealed that the anti-cariogenic potential of experimental composites was more than the control groups. The cell viability assay showed no toxic effect on MC3T3-E1 cell lines in the MTT assay. The microhardness of experimental composites increased as the percentage of DDCP increased, however, the degree of cure was increased only up till the concentration of 0.20%. The release kinetics of the composites reveals that even after 28 days there was a steady and slow release of copper particles signifying the sustained anti-cariogenic effect. CONCLUSION: The experimental composites have good anti-cariogenic potential, which was sustained for one month without any deleterious effect on the physical and chemical properties of resin dental composites.

A Guide through the Dental Dimethacrylate Polymer Network Structural Characterization and Interpretation of Physico-Mechanical Properties

Material characterization by the determination of relationships between structure and properties at different scales is essential for contemporary material engineering. This review article provides a summary of such studies on dimethacrylate polymer networks. These polymers serve as photocuring organic matrices in the composite dental restorative materials. The polymer network structure was discussed from the perspective of the following three aspects: the chemical structure, molecular structure (characterized by the degree of conversion and crosslink density (chemical as well as physical)), and supramolecular structure (characterized by the microgel agglomerate dimensions). Instrumental techniques and methodologies currently used for the determination of particular structural parameters were summarized. The influence of those parameters as well as the role of hydrogen bonding on basic mechanical properties of dimethacrylate polymer networks were finally demonstrated. Mechanical strength, modulus of elasticity, hardness, and impact resistance were discussed. The issue of the relationship between chemical structure and water sorption was also addressed.

Depth-dependence of Degree of Conversion and Microhardness for Dual-cure and Light-cure Composites

Clinical Relevance

New dual-cure bulk-fill composites show promise for uniform degree of conversion and microhardness throughout the entire depth of direct restorations.

SUMMARY

Objective:

The aim of this study was to evaluate the degree of conversion (DC) through micro-Raman spectroscopy and surface microhardness in Vickers hardness (VHN) of three new dual-cure bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBCs) compared with light-cure bulk-fill and incremental RBCs at two clinically relevant depths and for two light irradiation times.

Methods:

Three commercially available restorative dual-cure bulk-fill RBCs (BulkEZ, HyperFIL, and Injectafil) were evaluated and compared with three light-cure RBCs (Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable, Filtek One Bulk Fill, and incremental Filtek Z250) as controls. Specimens were prepared in two different depths (0.5 mm and 5 mm) and were light irradiated for 20 seconds or 40 seconds. Self-cure was also evaluated for the three dual-cure bulk-fill RBCs. Micro-Raman spectroscopic measurements and VHN tests (n=5) were made after 24 hours of dry storage in the dark at room temperature for all test conditions. Data were analyzed using one-way and two-way analyses of variance (α=0.05).

Results:

All tested RBCs showed significantly higher DC and VHN values at 0.5-mm depth than at 5-mm depth, with the exception of BulkEZ, which showed similar DC and VHN values at two depths. The three dual-cure bulk-fill RBCs showed significantly higher DC than the three light-cure RBCs under the same curing condition. The three dual-cure RBCs showed much smaller differences in VHN values between the two depths than the three light-cure RBCs. Twenty seconds and 40 seconds of light irradiation did not generate significant difference in DC and VHN values for the three dual-cure bulk-fill RBCs at either depth or for the three light-cure RBCs at the 0.5-mm depth; however, 40 seconds of light irradiation generated significantly higher DC and VHN values for One Bulk Fill and Z250 at the 5-mm depth compared with 20 seconds of light irradiation.

Assessment of Compressive Mechanical Behavior of Bis-GMA Polymer Using Hyperelastic Models

Despite wide industrial applications of Bis-GMA polymer, very few studies are available about the material classification, mechanical properties, and behavior of this material. In this study, the compressive behavior of Bis-GMA polymer was studied using different hyperelastic constitutive models through a hybrid experimental-computational process. Standard uniaxial compression tests were conducted to extract the mechanical behavior and structural response of the Bis-GMA polymer. A nano-indentation experiment was used to verify the compressive behavior of Bis-GMA polymer in the form of hyperelastic behavior. The finite element model and real-time simulation of the test incorporating different hyperelastic models were developed in comparison with the experimental finding to obtain the proper type of hyperelastic behavior of Bis-GMA polymer. The results indicate that a second-order polynomial hyperelastic model is the best fit to predict the behavior of Bis-GMA polymer. Next, the validated model was used to determine the true stress–strain curve of the Bis-GMA polymer.

Tertiary Amine and Tooth Mineral Hydroxyapatite Facilely Trigger Self-cure of 10-MDP Based Adhesives

The present work aims to investigate if a novel self-cure system, mediated by tertiary amine ethyl 4-(dimethylamino)-benzoate (4E) and tooth mineral hydroxyapatite (HAp), would trigger polymerization of model adhesives based on a popular self-etch monomer, 10- methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP). The effect of 4E and HAp contents on degree of conversion (DC), polymerization rate (Rp), and induction period (IP) was investigated. The occurrence of such self-cure phenomenon in adhesives that underwent prior inadequate light cure was also evaluated. Model self-etch adhesives were prepared by using a monomer mixture of 10-MDP with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate at1:1 wt. ratio. 4E (0.3-1.3 wt%), and HAp (0.5-2 wt%) were added to the mixture. Benzoylperoxide and N,N-dihydroxyethyl-p-toluidine were used as conventional chemical-cure system, and trimethylbenzoyl-diphenylphosphine oxide as light-curing photoinitiator. The polymerization processes and mechanical properties of model adhesives were evaluated by real time ATR/FT-IR and nanoindentation, respectively. The 4E- HAp system successfully triggered self-cure of 10-MDP based model adhesives. DC, Rp and IP were apparently affected by both 4E and HAp contents. DC of self-cure of the model adhesives was much higher than that of the conventional chemical-cure system. 4E-HAp initiated self-cure further boosted DC to ~100% regardless of prior light exposure, and significantly improved elastic modulus and hardness, thus provided a novel polymerization method to effectively salvage curing of the adhesives after inadequate light-cure.

Increased rates of photopolymerisation by ternary type II photoinitiator systems in dental resins

To evaluate the effects of Type I and Type II photoinitiator systems on curing efficiency, degree of conversion (DC) and chemico-physical properties of resin based materials. A comonomer base containing 50%wt 2.2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloxypropoxy)phenyl]propane (bis-GMA) and 50%wt triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) was formulated with either 0.5 or 1mol% of Type II camphoroquinone (CQ), Type I monoacylphosphine oxide (MAPO) or bis-acylphosphine oxide (BAPO) photoinitiators. The Type II system was either a binary (1: 2 CQ:amine) or ternary system (1: 2 CQ:amine + 0.5 mol% DPI). Degree and rate of polymerization was measured by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). Knoop micro-hardness prior to and following ethanol immersion was assessed. Flexural strength and modulus was measured under three-point bend test. Water sorption and solubility was also evaluated. The photoinitiator absorption spectra and the total absorbed energy per unit volume (E_abs) for 0.5mol% photoinitiator in each material was calculated. Despite the reduced total absorbed energy per unit volume for CQ based systems, ternary Type II system significantly improved curing efficiency (P < 0.05) compared to both Type I photoinitiators and degree of conversion compared to MAPO only, whilst exhibiting comparable mechanical and physical properties compared to both Type I based materials at equivalent molar concentrations of photoinitiator (P > 0.05). Ternary Type II systems is an efficient alternative to improve the polymerization of resin materials, promoting similar or even better properties than Type I initiators. DPI can increase the reactivity of CQ systems and promote polymerization rates superior than Type I photoinitiators.

Properties of Experimental Dental Composites Containing Antibacterial Silver-Releasing Filler

Secondary caries is one of the important issues related to using dental composite restorations. Effective prevention of cariogenic bacteria survival may reduce this problem. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity and physical properties of composite materials with silver sodium hydrogen zirconium phosphate (SSHZP). The antibacterial filler was introduced at concentrations of 1%, 4%, 7%, 10%, 13%, and 16% (w/w) into model composite material consisting of methacrylate monomers and silanized glass and silica fillers. The in vitro reduction in the number of viable cariogenic bacteria Streptococcus mutans ATCC 33535 colonies, Vickers microhardness, compressive strength, diametral tensile strength, flexural strength, flexural modulus, sorption, solubility, degree of conversion, and color stability were investigated. An increase in antimicrobial filler concentration resulted in a statistically significant reduction in bacteria. There were no statistically significant differences caused by the introduction of the filler in compressive strength, diametral tensile strength, flexural modulus, and solubility. Statistically significant changes in degree of conversion, flexural strength, hardness (decrease), solubility (increase), and in color were registered. A favorable combination of antibacterial properties and other properties was achieved at SSHZP concentrations from 4% to 13%. These composites exhibited properties similar to the control material and enhanced in vitro antimicrobial efficiency.

Investigating the limits of resin-based luting composite photopolymerization through various thicknesses of indirect restorative materials

OBJECTIVE

To determine the limitations of using light-curable resin-based luting composites (RBLCs) to bond indirect ceramic/resin-composite restorations by measuring light transmittance through indirect restorative materials and the resulting degree of conversion (DC) of the luting-composites placed underneath.

METHODS

Various thicknesses (0-4mm) and shades of LAVA Zirconia and LAVA Ultimate were prepared and used as light curing filters. A commercial, light curable RBLC, RelyX Veneer (control) was compared with four experimental RBLCs of the following composition: TEGDMA/BisGMA (50/50 or 30/70wt%, respectively); camphorquinone/amine (0.2/0.8wt%) or Lucirin-TPO (0.42wt%); microfillers (55wt%) and nanofillers (10wt%). RBLCs covered with the LAVA filter were light-cured for 40s, either with the dual-peak BluephaseG2 or an experimental device emitting either in the blue or violet visible band. The samples were analyzed by Raman spectroscopy to determine DC. Light transmittance through the filters was measured using a common spectroscopy technique.

RESULTS

All the factors studied significantly influenced DC (p<0.05). RBLCs with increased TEGDMA content exhibited higher DC. Only small differences were observed comparing DC without filters and filters ≤1mm (p>0.05). For thicknesses ≥2mm, significant reductions in DC were observed (p<0.05). Transmittance values revealed higher filter absorption at 400nm than 470nm. A minimal threshold of irradiance measured through the filters that maintained optimal DC following 40s irradiation was identified for each RBLC formulation, and ranged between 250-500mW/cm².

SIGNIFICANCE

This work confirmed that optimal photopolymerization of RBLCs through indirect restorative materials (≤4mm) and irradiation time of 40s is possible, but only in some specific conditions. The determination of such conditions is likely to be key to clinical success, and all the factors need to be optimized accordingly.

Continuous and scalable polymer capsule processing for inertial fusion energy target shell fabrication using droplet microfluidics

High specification, polymer capsules, to produce inertial fusion energy targets, were continuously fabricated using surfactant-free, inertial centralisation, and ultrafast polymerisation, in a scalable flow reactor. Laser-driven, inertial confinement fusion depends upon the interaction of high-energy lasers and hydrogen isotopes, contained within small, spherical and concentric target shells, causing a nuclear fusion reaction at ~150 M°C. Potentially, targets will be consumed at ~1 M per day per reactor, demanding a 5000x unit cost reduction to ~$0.20, and is a critical, key challenge. Experimentally, double emulsions were used as templates for capsule-shells, and were formed at 20 Hz, on a fluidic chip. Droplets were centralised in a dynamic flow, and their shapes both evaluated, and mathematically modeled, before subsequent shell solidification. The shells were photo-cured individually, on-the-fly, with precisely-actuated, millisecond-length (70 ms), uniform-intensity UV pulses, delivered through eight, radially orchestrated light-pipes. The near 100% yield rate of uniform shells had a minimum 99.0% concentricity and sphericity, and the solidification processing period was significantly reduced, over conventional batch methods. The data suggest the new possibility of a continuous, on-the-fly, IFE target fabrication process, employing sequential processing operations within a continuous enclosed duct system, which may include cryogenic fuel-filling, and shell curing, to produce ready-to-use IFE targets.

Effects of radiant exposure values using second and third generation light curing units on the degree of conversion of a lucirin-based resin composite

Objective

Using Fourier transform infrared analysis (FTIR) in vitro, the effects of varying radiant exposure (RE) values generated by second and third generation LED LCUs on the degree of conversion (DC) and maximum rate of polymerization (Rpmax) of an experimental Lucirin TPO-based RC were evaluated.

Material and Methods

1 mm or 2 mm thick silicon molds were positioned on a horizontal attenuated total reflectance (ATR) unit attached to an infrared spectroscope. The RC was inserted into the molds and exposed to varying REs (18, 36 and 56 J/cm2) using second (Radii Plus, SDI) and third generation LED LCUs (Bluephase G2/Ivoclar Vivadent) or a quartz tungsten based LCU (Optilux 501/SDS Kerr). FTIR spectra (n=7) were recorded for 10 min (1 spectrum/s, 16 scans/spectrum, resolution 4 cm-1) immediately after their application to the ATR. The DC was calculated using standard techniques for observing changes in aliphatic to aromatic peak ratios both prior to, and 10 min after curing, as well as during each 1 second interval. DC and Rpmax data were analyzed using 3-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test (p=0.05).

Results

No significant difference in DC or Rpmax was observed between the 1 mm or 2 mm thick specimens when RE values were delivered by Optilux 501 or when the 1 mm thick composites were exposed to light emitted by Bluephase G2, which in turn promoted a lower DC when 18 J/cm2 (13 s) were delivered to the 2 mm thick specimens. Radii Plus promoted DC and Rpmax values close to zero under most conditions, while the delivery of 56 J/cm2 (40 s) resulted in low DC values.

Conclusions

The third generation LCU provided an optimal polymerization of Lucirin TPO-based RC under most tested conditions, whereas the second generation LED-curing unit was useless regardless of the RE.

Effects of delivering the same radiant exposures at 730, 1450, and 2920 mW/cm2 to two resin-based composites

Objective:

To evaluate the effects of curing two resin-based composites (RBC) with the same radiant exposures at 730, 1450, and 2920 mW/cm².

Materials and Methods:

Two types of RBC, Filtek Supreme Ultra and Tetric-EvoCeram-Bulk Fill, were light-cured to deliver the same radiant exposures for 5, 10, or 20 s by means of a modified Valo light emitted diode light-curing unit with the light tip placed directly over each specimen. The RBC was expressed into metal rings that were 2.0 and 4.0 mm in thickness, directly on an attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared plate heated to 33°C, and the degree of conversion (DC) of the RBC was recorded. The specimens were then removed and the Knoop microhardness (KHN) was tested at both the bottom and the top of each specimen. The KHN was tested again after 24 h and 7 days of storage in the dark at 37°C and 100% humidity. The DC and KHN results were analyzed with Fisher's protected least significant difference at α = 0.05.

Results:

The DC values for the specimens cured at the three different irradiance levels were similar. However, at different depths, there were differences in the DC values. In general, there were no clear differences among the samples cured in the three different groups, and the KHN was always greater 24 h and 7 days later (P < 0.05).

Conclusions:

Despite the curing time, and as long as the samples were cured with the same radiant exposures, there were no significant effects on the DC and KHN of both RBCs.

Effectiveness of high-power LEDs to polymerize resin cements through ceramics: An in vitro study

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The cementation of ceramic veneers using light-polymerized resin cement is largely dependent on the proper light activation of the cement. Light activation using high irradiance could shorten the time required to lute multiple restorations.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the light transmission of dental light-polymerizing units through ceramic cylinders and its effect on the polymerization kinetics of a resin cement.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Ceramic ingots (IPS Empress Esthetic, shade ET1) were sectioned to produce cylinders 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 mm thick. Two light-emitting diode units were evaluated: SmartLite Focus and Valo Cordless, the latter used in either Standard or Xtra Power (XP) modes. Light transmission (average of irradiance, total energy, and light-emission profile) through the cylinders was measured (n=3). The polymerization kinetics of a resin cement light polymerized through the ceramic was monitored for 5 minutes (n=3). The degree of conversion was measured again after 72 hours. Data were individually analyzed with 2-way ANOVA and the Tukey HSD test (α=.05).

RESULTS

Valo at XP presented the highest values of irradiance and SmartLite the lowest, irrespective of the ceramic thickness. Regarding the total energy, XP showed the lowest values. The total energy and irradiance lessened with the increase in ceramic thickness. In general, except for Valo at XP, the ceramic thickness did not affect the degree of conversion. Valo at XP and interposing 2.0 mm ceramic resulted in the lowest values of Rp_max.

CONCLUSIONS

The reduction of total energy and irradiance by ceramic interposition had only a slight effect on polymerization kinetics.

Correlation between the beam profile from a curing light and the microhardness of four resins

OBJECTIVE

To demonstrate the effect of localized irradiance and spectral distribution inhomogeneities of one LED-based dental light-curing unit (LCU) on the corresponding microhardness values at the top, and bottom surfaces of four dental resin-based composites (RBCs), which contained either camphorquinone (CQ) alone or a combination of CQ and monoacylphosphine oxide (TPO) as photoinitiators.

METHODS

Localized irradiance beam profiles from a polywave LED-based LCU were recorded five times using a laser beam analyzer, without and with either a 400 nm or 460 nm narrow bandpass filter placed in front of the camera lens. Five specimens of each of the four RBCs (two containing CQ/TPO and two containing CQ-only) were exposed for 5-, 10-, or 30-s with the light guide directly on the top surface of the RBC. After 24 h, Knoop microhardness values were measured at 45 locations across the top and bottom surfaces of each specimen. Microhardness readings for each RBC surface and exposure time were correlated with localized patterns of the LCU beam profile, measured using the 400 nm and 460 nm bandpass filters. Spearman rank correlation was used to avoid relying on an assumption of a bivariate normal distribution for the KHN and irradiance.

RESULTS

The local irradiance and spectral emission values were not uniformly distributed across the light tip. There was a strong significant positive correlation with the irradiance beam profile values from the LCU taken through bandpass filters and the microhardness maps of the RBC surfaces exposed for 5 and 10 s. The strength of this correlation decreased with increasing exposure time for the RBCs containing CQ only, and increased for the RBCs containing both CQ and TPO.

CONCLUSIONS

Localized beam and spectral distributions across the tip end of the light guide strongly correlated with corresponding areas of microhardness in both the top and bottom surfaces among four RBCs with different photoinitiator contents. Significance: A light-curing unit with a highly inhomogeneous light output can adversely affect localized microhardness of resin-based composites and this may be a contributing factor for premature failure of a restoration.
