Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed at comparing the microtensile bond strength (MTBS) and interfacial adaptation of a modern self-curing and a light-curing restorative bulk-fill composite to a conventional composite applied with the layering technique. METHODS Forty-eight occlusal cavities were divided in three main groups (16/group) based on tested materials: (i) STELA, bulk-fill self-curing restorative (STELA, SDI Ltd.); (ii) 3 M-BULK, bulk-fill composite (Filtek One Bulk-Fill, 3 M Oral Care); and (iii) 3 M-CTR, a conventional composite (Filtek Supreme XTE, 3 M Oral Care). These were used in combination with their adhesives in self-etch (SE) or etch-and-rinse (ER) mode. Specimens stored in artificial saliva (24 h or 12 months) were evaluated for MTBS and fractography. The interfacial analysis was performed through confocal microscopy. ANOVA and Fisher's LSD post hoc tests were performed with a level of significance of 5%. RESULTS All the tested materials applied in ER mode presented (24 h) greater bond strength than in SE mode. Although all materials showed a significant drop in the bond strength after prolonged storage, STELA showed the highest bonding performance and interfaces with few gaps. 3 M-BULK had the lowest bond strength and an interface with several voids and gaps. CONCLUSIONS All materials were affected by interface degradation and bonding reduction over prolonged aging. However, their use in combination with adhesives applied in ER mode may offer greater immediate bonding performance. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The use of restorative light-curing bulk-fill composites may generate gaps at the bonding interface and voids. STELA may represent a suitable alternative to avoid such issues.

Abstract
Improvements in mechanical properties and a shift of focus towards esthetic dentistry led to the application of dental resins in various areas of dentistry. However, dental resins are not inert in the oral environment and may release monomers and other substances such as Bisphenol-A (BPA) due to incomplete polymerization and intraoral degradation. Current research shows that various monomers present cytotoxic, genotoxic, proinflammatory, and even mutagenic effects. Of these eluting substances, the elution of BPA in the oral environment is of particular interest due to its role as an endocrine disruptor. For this reason, the release of residual monomers and especially BPA from dental resins has been a cause for public concern. The assessment of patient exposure and potential health risks of dental monomers require a reliable experimental and analytical setup. However, the heterogeneous study design applied in current research hinders biocompatibility testing by impeding comparative analysis of different studies and transfer to the clinical situation. Therefore, this review aims to provide information on each step of a robust experimental and analytical in vitro setup that allows the collection of clinically relevant data and future meta-analytical evaluations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Functional acidic monomers are able to chemically interact with hydroxyapatite, and this bond appears to be very stable. Therefore, this aspect of the 10-MDP molecule made it attractive and added to self-etch adhesives. OBJECTIVES The objective of this Systematic Review (SR) and Meta-analysis (MA) was to determine whether systems with the 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) functional monomer in their formula showed better clinical performance in restorations placed in noncarious cervical lesions (NCCL) when compared to systems without it. The PROSPERO registration number of the MA is CRD42016050538. DATA AND SOURCES An e-search was conducted through MEDLINE via PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, OpenGrey, Clinical Trials, Current Controlled Trials, and EU Clinical Trials Register, and a search through the references of included studies was also performed. Randomized Controlled Clinical Trials, in which the effectiveness of self-etch adhesive systems, with or without the 10-MDP functional monomer for NCCL, was discussed, were included. Risk of bias was performed according to the Cochrane Collaboration tool, and the certainty of evidence was evaluated through GRADE. STUDY SELECTION The data were grouped, heterogeneity (I2) was tested, and after duplicate removal, 4208 manuscripts were retrieved. From these, 11 studies were included in the qualitative analysis (risk of bias), with nine classified as low risk and two unclear. GRADE analysis detected moderate-to-high certainty of evidence, so the quantitative synthesis [Meta-analysis (MA)] was performed including the 11 studies. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION There were no statistical differences in the clinical performance of restorations conducted using "with or without 10-MDP" adhesive types, for all evaluated criteria (p=0.05), with heterogeneity ranging from 0% to 53%. Thus, the presence of 10-MDP functional monomer did not influence the clinical performance of restorations placed in NCCL.

Abstract
In the present study, we investigated the chemical interaction between 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (10-MDP) and methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (gamma-MPS) in one-bottle primer solutions and its effect on dentine bonding performance. Solutions containing 10 wt% 10-MDP and/or gamma-MPS at 0, 1, 5, 10, or 15 wt% were prepared, providing 10 experimental groups (labeled MDP/MPSxx or MPSxx, where MDP indicates the presence of 10 wt% MDP and xx is the wt% of gamma-MPS in the solution). Phosphoric-acid-etched dentine blocks were prepared from human molars and conditioned in the solutions before being used to build resin-dentine-bonded specimens, which were subsequently subjected to microtensile bond strength (μTBS) testing after 24-h or six-months water storage. Interfacial nanoleakage was evaluated by SEM observation. All the primer-conditioned samples showed significantly higher initial μTBS values than that of the control group, and six-months water storage significantly lowered the μTBS for all the groups; however, the decreases for MDP/MPS10 and MDP/MPS15 were significantly greater than those for MDP/MPS1 and the control solution. Furthermore, MDP/MPS10 and MDP/MPS15 groups also showed more serious nanoleakage. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction analyses were used to investigate the chemical affinity between 10-MDP and hydroxyapatite (HAp). In XRD analysis, the intensities of peaks assigned to 10-MDP-calcium salts were lower for the solutions containing gamma-MPS. Overall, the results indicate that the copresence of gamma-MPS (above 10 wt%) and 10-MDP in one-bottle primer solutions inhibit the formation of 10-MDP-calcium salts, leading to increased long-term nanoleakage and decreased bonding durability.

Abstract
The presence of 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate (MDP) at the adhesive-dentin interface enables ionic binding to calcium salts, which results in rigid nano-layering within the submicron scale resin-dentin interdiffusion zone. MDP has been used with additional co-monomers, such as hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and/or 4-methacryloyloxyethyl-trimellitic acid (4-MET), mainly to enhance the chemical bonding properties. However, the use of co-monomers may compromise the rigidity of the adhesive-dentin interface. In this study, we use high-resolution mechanical mapping across the interface to discern the in situ mechanical properties of each target region at the nanoscale. Visualization by modulus mapping demonstrated that HEMA increases the diffusion properties of MDP into dentin structures. However, the rigidity of the adhesive-dentin interface indicated by the storage modulus was markedly lower in MDP containing HEMA than in MDP containing 4-MET. Dynamic indentation testing revealed that the bonding layer was more deformable in the presence of HEMA. Moreover, the presence of MDP in the bonding layer might also increase the deformability because the polymerization linearity allows a large degree of viscoelasticity. These factors also diminish the rigidity of the adhesive-dentin interface. Within the limitations of this study, our findings demonstrated that 4-MET is a better co-monomer than HEMA in MDP-based dental adhesives. Modulus mapping and nanoindentation are introduced as new tests for the adhesive-dentin interface to address queries about the effectiveness of dental adhesives.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the clinical outcomes of minimally invasive ceramic restorations executed by dentists with different levels of experience. METHODS Sixteen professionals were divided into 4 groups according to their experience levels. These included G1: up to 2 years since graduation, G2: 2-5 years, G3: 5-10 years, and G4: more than 10 years. All professionals were trained to follow the same standardized clinical protocol, but were unaware of the research objectives. A single evaluator followed the clinical treatments and recorded the complications and errors that occurred during the execution of the protocol. Ninety-one full crowns, 137 veneers, and 46 no-preparation veneers were prepared from lithium disilicate. Follow-ups were performed immediately and at 30, 180, and 360 days after the cementation and the evaluation based on the modified United States Public Health Service criteria. Ceramic chipping/fracture and debonding were considered failures. Fractures were replicated and submitted to fractographic analysis. RESULTS The highest number of failures were found in G1 followed by G3 and the lowest number of failures were found in G2. The level of success was 94% after 360 days. The fractographic analysis demonstrated the external surface of restorations as the critical area and suggested that failures might occur due to noncompliance with the clinical protocol. There was no correlation between professional experience and number of failures or patient satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS Professional experience was not a decisive for patient satisfaction and success of minimally invasive ceramic restorations, and noncompliance with the clinical protocol was associated with early ceramic restoration failures.

Abstract
Resumo Introdução O selamento dentinário imediato consiste na aplicação imediata de um sistema adesivo sobre exposições dentinárias após o preparo dental e previamente aos procedimentos de moldagem. Objetivo O objetivo do estudo foi avaliar a influência do selamento dentinário imediato (SDI) na resistência adesiva do sistema adesivo universal (Single Bond Universal, 3M ESPE) em dentina, na forma de aplicação autocondicionante. Material e método 30 incisivos bovinos foram divididos em 3 grupos (n = 10): grupo S (Sem Selamento Dentinário Imediato), grupo SDI (Selamento Dentinário Imediato) e grupo SDIF (Selamento Dentinário Imediato + Resina Flow). A superfície vestibular foi desgastada com pontas diamantadas até a exposição superficial de dentina. A simulação da lama dentinária foi realizada com lixa d’água por 30s e a dentina tratada de acordo com o respectivo grupo. Para simulação da restauração provisória, foram cimentados blocos de resina bisacrílica com cimento de óxido de zinco. Após 7 dias, foi realizada a cimentação definitiva de blocos de resina com cimento resinoso dual (RelyX ARC, 3M ESPE). Os espécimes foram seccionados para obtenção de filetes de 1mm2 e submetidos ao teste de microtração, em uma máquina universal de ensaios (Instron). Os resultados foram tabulados e submetidos a Análise de Variância (ANOVA) e teste de Tukey a 5% de significância. Resultado Observaram-se maiores valores de resistência de união para o grupo SDIF (23,53 MPa), diferindo estatisticamente do Grupo S (17,65 MPa) (p=0,008). O grupo SDI apresentou valor médio de resistência de união (19,25 MPa), não diferindo estatisticamente dos grupos S (p=0,68) e SDIF (p=0,07). Conclusão Recomenda-se a técnica de selamento dentinário imediato seguido da uma camada de resina flow, em exposições dentinárias ocasionadas pelo preparo dental para restaurações indiretas.

Abstract
The incorporation of functional monomers in dental adhesive systems promotes chemical interaction with dental substrates, resulting in higher adhesion forces when compared to micromechanical adhesion only. The 10-MDP monomer, whose chemical structure allows for a polar behavior which is favorable to adhesion, also promotes the protection of collagen fibers through the formation of MDP-calcium salts. This systematic review aimed to characterize the interface created by 10-MDP containing adhesive systems through an evaluation of the following parameters: Formation of nano-layered structures, capacity to produce an acid-base resistant zone, and adhesion stability. The research was conducted using PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and Embase, limited to English, Spanish, and Portuguese articles. The research was done according to the PICO strategy. The 10-MDP monomer has the capacity to produce an acid-base resistant zone on the adhesive interface, which increases the response to acid-base challenges. The adhesion established by these systems is stable over time. To have the best of these adhesive solutions, a scrubbing technique must be used to apply the adhesive system on dental substrates, in order to improve monomers infiltration and to create a stable bond. Time must be given for the solution to infiltrate, hybridize and form the MDP-Ca, improving adhesive stability.

Abstract
To evaluate the stress behavior of ceramic fragment restoration, varying the thickness of the cement layer and intraoral temperature variation. A solid model of a upper lateral incisor was obtained and a defect at enamel distal/incisal edge was restored with a ceramic fragment. Based on this initial model, 4 different models (M) were built: M1 - absence of cement layer (CL) (0 μm of thickness); M2 - CL with an uniform thickness of 50 μm; M3 - CL with 50 μm at the margin of ceramics and 100 μm in the inner area far from margins; M4 - CL with 50 μm at the margin of ceramics and 200 μm in the inner area far from margins. The environment temperature changed from 5 °C to 50 °C in 4 increments. The finite element analysis was performed. Increase the cement layer thickness generated higher stress levels on ceramic surface in all temperatures, as well as on cement interface. In general hot temperature was the worst scenario for ceramic fragments integrity, since tensile and compressive stress were more intense. The maximum principal stress on ceramic fragment was found 90 MPa for M4 at 50 °C, followed for M3 (87 Mpa). For CL, the peak of stress was found for M3 at 5 °C (47 MPa). Is it possible to conclude that thick resin cement layer contribute to higher stress concentration on ceramic fragment, and extremely hot temperatures increase the risk of structural failure, since both ceramic and \cl are exposed to higher compressive and tensile stresses.

Abstract
Abstract Introduction Modern dentistry is reflected in the insertion of new materials with different adhesion forms in dental structures, such as the Universal adhesive system. Objective To evaluate the bond strength of the universal dentin adhesive system, in the form of self-etching and conventional application, compared with a simplified conventional adhesive system, in two distinct periods: 1 week and 6 months. Material and method 48 bovine incisors separated into 6 groups, stored for 7 days, were selected. Worn out the buccal enamel until dentin exposure. Adper Single Bond 2 (3M Espe) or SingleBond Universal (3M Espe) adhesives were applied, and catheters filled with Opallis Flow (FGM) composite were placed. After photoactivation, the catheters were removed and the specimens (n = 48), stored in distilled water at 37 °C for one week and six months, were exposed. The specimens were fixed to a universal testing machine (EMIC DL 2000) with a speed of 0.5 mm / min. Bond strength (BS) was calculated in MPa, and data were statistically analyzed by Anova and Tukey test at 5% significance level. Result For Adper Single bond, the BS was equivalent in the times tested; for Universal conventional and self-conditioning time influenced the BS, with a decrease in the results. At 1 week, all stickers were different from each other, with higher BS for Universal conventional mode, followed by universal self-etching mode and then Adper Single bond. Conclusion The best results were achieved with universal adhesive in conventional mode for both tested times.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The color stability and mechanical properties of luting agents influence the esthetics and longevity of ceramic restorations. However, studies evaluating the color changes and mechanical properties of luting agents under ceramic laminates activated by using different methods are lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of different modes of photoactivation on the nanohardness and elastic modulus of resin cements and dental adhesives and on the color stability of ceramic laminate veneers. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty-four lithium disilicate blocks (7×8×0.6 mm) were cemented onto bovine enamel and divided into 4 groups according to the polymerization light (Radii-Cal or Valo) used and the mode of activation of the dental adhesive (no previous photoactivation or previous photoactivation). Single Bond Universal dental adhesive and RelyX Veneer resin cement were used in all experimental groups. Color stability was measured using a UV-2450 ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer before and after ultraviolet-B artificial accelerated aging (n=8). The nanohardness and the elastic modulus of the adhesive and resin cement were measured using a nanohardness tester (n=3). The color stability and mechanical properties were measured and analyzed using ANOVA and the Tukey least significant difference test (α=.05). RESULTS No difference in color stability or mechanical properties of the resin cement among the polymerization lights was detected (P>.05). Specimens that underwent previous photoactivation of the adhesive using the Valo polywave unit exhibited higher elastic modulus values than those that did not undergo previous photoactivation (P<.001). CONCLUSIONS The Valo polywave polymerization light improved mechanical properties and color stability more than the Radii-Cal unit. Previous activation of the dental adhesive in the dental enamel with the Valo polywave polymerization light yielded more satisfactory results.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the clinical performance of posterior resin composite restorations regarding experimental and regular adhesive protocols in caries affected-dentin (CAD). MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 92 class I and class II cavities with carious lesions were selected and randomly assigned to the following groups: (1) bioactive glass-ceramic powder/two-step etch and rinse system, (2) control/two-step etch and rinse system, (3) bioactive glass-ceramic powder/two-step self-etching system, and (4) control/two-step self-etching system. Two operators carried out the adhesive protocols and restored the cavities with a nano-hybrid resin composite. Participants were followed up at 1 week and 6, 12, and 18 months for clinical evaluation performed by two blinded examiners and calibrated according to FDI criteria. Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests with a confidence of 95%. RESULTS The clinical performance of resin composite restoration was not affected by the experimental use of an adhesive protocol including a bioactive glass-ceramic powder for 18 months post-procedure. However, there was a significant difference between group 2 and group 4 (p < 0.05) for marginal adaptation (18 months). Group 2 was significantly different from group 3 (p < 0.05) for fracture of material/retention (18 months) and marginal adaptation (1 week); group 2 showed a better performance. CONCLUSION Adhesive protocols can alter the clinical performance of posterior restorations in terms of marginal adaptation and the fracture of material/retention in CAD. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Adhesive protocols may influence the success of resin composite restorations in CAD; this is important because failure can lead to caries, re-incidence, and/or clinical re-work.

Abstract
To investigate how the hydrofluoric acid (HF) concentrations applied to a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic (EMX) affects the surface morphology and microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of ceramics to dentin, using light-cured resin cements with or without UDMA. Sixty-three EMX square ceramic blocks were etched for 20 seconds using different HF concentrations (1%, 5% and 10%) and luted to dentin using two types of resin cement combinations: BisGMA/TEGDMA and BisGMA/TEGDMA/UDMA (n = 10). Each bonded EMX-dentin block was sectioned to obtain 1 mm2 sticks for μTBS evaluation. Half of the sticks were tested after 24 hours and the other half was assessed after 6 months of water storage. Data were statistically assessed using split-plot three-way ANOVA and multiple comparisons were performed using the Tukey's post hoc test (α = 0.05). One EMX sample from each HF concentration was analyzed using field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) to characterize the etching pattern. According to the FE-SEM images, increasing the concentration of HF from 1 to 5 and then to 10% led to increased removal of glassy matrix and greater exposure of lithium disilicate crystals. The 10% HF concentration yielded higher μTBS when compared to 1% for BisGMA/TEGDMA formulation (p < 0.05); whereas HF 1% and 5% showed similar μTBS values when compared to 10% HF for BisGMA/TEGDMA/UDMA resin matrix (p > 0.05) at both storage times. Water aging decreased the μTBS values (p < 0.05), except when 10% HF was associated with BisGMA/TEGDMA resin cement. Resin cement formulation and hydrofluoric acid concentrations can interfere with the immediate and long-term glass-ceramic bond strength to dentin.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the microtensile bond strength (µTBS) of Scotchbond Universal to dentin using the etch-and-rinse or the self-etch technique after 24 h and 6 months of storage. Materials and Methods: Flat dentin surfaces were obtained in 24 third molars. The teeth were divided into four groups: G1 – Scotchbond Universal applied in the etch-and-rinse mode; G2 – Scotchbond Universal applied in the self-etch mode; G3 – Scotchbond Multi-Purpose; G4 – Clearfil SE Bond. A block of composite was built on the adhesive area. The tooth/resin sets were cut parallel to the long axis to obtain 40 beams (~0.8 mm2) for each group. Twenty specimens were immediately submitted to the µTBS test, and the remaining 20 were stored in water for 6 months. Failures and the adhesive interface were analyzed by SEM. Results: According to two-way ANOVA, the interaction between adhesive and storage time was significant (p=0.015).The µTBS (MPa) means were the following: 24 h – G1 (39.37±10.82), G2 (31.02±13.76), G3 (35.09±14.03) and G4 (35.84±11.06); 6 months – G1 (36.99±8.78), G2 (40.58±8.07), G3 (32.44±6.07) and G4 (41.75±8.25). Most failures were mixed. Evidence of hybrid layer and numerous resin tags were noted for Scotchbond Universal applied with the etch-and-rinse mode and Scotchbond Multi-Purpose. A thinner hybrid layer and fewer resin tags were noted for Scotchbond Universal applied in the self-etch mode and Clearfil SE Bond. Conclusion: The results indicate that the µTBS for Scotchbond Universal is comparable to the gold-standard adhesives. Scotchbond Universal applied in the self-etch mode and Clearfil SE Bond revealed higher bond stability compared to the etch-and-rinse mode.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this randomized, controlled prospective clinical trial was to evaluate the clinical effectiveness of restoring noncarious cervical lesions with two self-etching adhesive systems applied with or without selective enamel etching. METHODS A one-step self-etching adhesive (Xeno V(+)) and a two-step self-etching system (Clearfil SE Bond) were used. The effectiveness of phosphoric acid selective etching of enamel margins was also evaluated. Fifty-six cavities were restored with each adhesive system and divided into two subgroups (n=28; etch and non-etch). All 112 cavities were restored with the nanohybrid composite Esthet.X HD. The clinical effectiveness of restorations was recorded in terms of retention, marginal integrity, marginal staining, caries recurrence, and postoperative sensitivity after 3, 6, 12, 18, and 24 months (modified United States Public Health Service). RESULTS The Friedman test detected significant differences only after 18 months for marginal staining in the groups Clearfil SE non-etch (p=0.009) and Xeno V(+) etch (p=0.004). One restoration was lost during the trial (Xeno V(+) etch; p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS Although an increase in marginal staining was recorded for groups Clearfil SE non-etch and Xeno V(+) etch, the clinical effectiveness of restorations was considered acceptable for the single-step and two-step self-etching systems with or without selective enamel etching in this 24-month clinical trial.
