Cytocompatibility of Polymers for Skin-Contact Applications Produced via Pellet Extrusion

Orthoses and prostheses (O&P) play crucial roles in assisting individuals with limb deformities or amputations. Proper material selection for these devices is imperative to ensure mechanical robustness and biocompatibility. While traditional manufacturing methods have limitations in terms of customization and reproducibility, additive manufacturing, particularly pellet extrusion (PEX), offers promising advancements. In applications involving direct contact with the skin, it is essential for materials to meet safety standards to prevent skin irritation. Hence, this study investigates the biocompatibility of different thermoplastic polymers intended for skin-contact applications manufactured through PEX. Surface morphology analysis revealed distinct characteristics among materials, with TPE-70ShA exhibiting notable irregularities. Cytotoxicity assessments using L929 fibroblasts indicated non-toxic responses for most materials, except for TPE-70ShA, highlighting the importance of material composition in biocompatibility. Our findings underscore the significance of adhering to safety standards in material selection and manufacturing processes for medical devices. While this study provides valuable insights, further research is warranted to investigate the specific effects of individual ingredients and explore additional parameters influencing material biocompatibility. Overall, healthcare practitioners must prioritize patient safety by meticulously selecting materials and adhering to regulatory standards in O&P manufacturing.

Dimensional Stability and Retention Strength of Impressions to Custom Impression Trays Fabricated Using Conventional Method and Additive Technology - An In-vitro Study

BACKGROUND

3D printing technology is replacing manual fabrication in all fields. 3D-printed impression trays should be assessed as they could replace conventional impression trays in the future.

AIM

In-vitro comparison and evaluation of the dimensional stability and retention strength of impressions to custom impression trays fabricated using conventional method and additive technology.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A maxillary edentulous auto-polymerizing acrylic resin model served as the master model. Two moulds were prepared from the master model in order to obtain 12 casts. One cast was scanned for 3D printing digital light processing (DLP) and fused deposition modelling (FDM) 24 impression trays using polylactic acid (PLA). Twelve casts were used to fabricate light cure impression trays. Polyvinyl-siloxane impressions were made on the master model using 36 impression trays and 18 trays each were used to assess dimensional stability and retention strength.

RESULTS

In dimensional stability analysis, one sample t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between each group and the master model followed by a one-way ANOVA. There were significant differences, but the difference was less with FDM trays (P < 0.05). In retention strength analysis, one-way Analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed statistically significant difference between each group and post-hoc test revealed specific difference, the highest with FDM trays (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

Dimensional changes were observed at 30 minutes and 72 hours. Lesser dimensional changes were observed when impressions were made using FDM trays followed by DLP and light cure trays. The mean retention strength seen in descending order was FDM, followed by DLP and light cure trays. The best retention strength was noticed when impressions were made using FDM trays.

Influence of additive manufacturing method and build angle on the accuracy of 3D-printed palatal plates

OBJECTIVES

In this in vitro study, the effects of additive manufacturing (AM) methods and build angles on the trueness and precision of 3D-printed palatal plate orthodontic appliances for newborns and infants were examined.

METHODS

Specimens were fabricated by different representative AM methods, including digital light processing (DLP), fused filament fabrication (FFF), and MultiJet printing (MJP). Three build angles (0°, 45°, and 90°) were used. After scanning, all specimens were analyzed using the 3D inspection software. The root mean square values were measured for trueness and precision. Color maps were created to detect deviations in samples. The data were statistically analyzed with a two-way ANOVA.

RESULTS

The trueness and precision were statistically influenced by both AM methods and build angles (p < 0.05). Moreover, the root mean square values of the 45° DLP (0.0221 ± 0.0017 μm) and the 0° MJP (0.0217 ± 0.0014 μm) were significantly lower compared to those in other groups (p < 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

AM methods (DLP, FFF, and MJP) and build angles (0°, 45°, and 90°) significantly impacted the dimensional accuracy of additively manufactured palatal plate orthodontic appliances. Also, the 45° DLP and the 0° MJP were associated with the highest trueness and precision.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

All tested AM methods with different build angles yielded clinically acceptable outcomes (within an acceptance range of ±300 μm for trueness), achieving the highest accuracy with a technology-specific suitable build angle.

Additive manufacturing technologies in the oral implant clinic: A review of current applications and progress

Additive manufacturing (AM) technologies can enable the direct fabrication of customized physical objects with complex shapes, based on computer-aided design models. This technology is changing the digital manufacturing industry and has become a subject of considerable interest in digital implant dentistry. Personalized dentistry implant treatments for individual patients can be achieved through Additive manufacturing. Herein, we review the applications of Additive manufacturing technologies in oral implantology, including implant surgery, and implant and restoration products, such as surgical guides for implantation, custom titanium meshes for bone augmentation, personalized or non-personalized dental implants, custom trays, implant casts, and implant-support frameworks, among others. In addition, this review also focuses on Additive manufacturing technologies commonly used in oral implantology. Stereolithography, digital light processing, and fused deposition modeling are often used to construct surgical guides and implant casts, whereas direct metal laser sintering, selective laser melting, and electron beam melting can be applied to fabricate dental implants, personalized titanium meshes, and denture frameworks. Moreover, it is sometimes required to combine Additive manufacturing technology with milling and other cutting and finishing techniques to ensure that the product is suitable for its final application.

Rinsing postprocessing procedure of a 3D-printed orthodontic appliance material: Impact of alternative post-rinsing solutions on the roughness, flexural strength and cytotoxicity

OBJECTIVE

The present study evaluated the effect of different rinsing postprocessing solutions on surface characteristics, flexural strength, and cytotoxicity of an additive manufactured polymer for orthodontic appliances. These solutions have been deemed an alternative to the standard isopropanol which is a flammable liquid, known to have toxic effects.

METHODS

Tested specimens were manufactured using direct light processing of an orthodontic appliance polymer (FREEPRINT® splint 2.0, Detax) and post-processed with different post-rinsing solutions, including isopropanol (IPA), ethanol (EtOH), EASY 3D Cleaner (EYC), Yellow Magic7 (YM7), and RESINAWAY (RAY), respectively. All groups were post-cured following the manufacturer's instructions. Surface topography and roughness (Ra and Rv) were evaluated. In addition, flexural strength was measured by a three-point bending test. An extract test was performed to evaluate cytotoxicity. The data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis test with Dunn's multiple comparisons test (p < 0.05).

RESULTS

Various post-rinsing solutions did not significantly affect the roughness values (Ra and Rv). Specimens post-processed with EtOH (98.1 ± 12.4 MPa) and EYC (101.1 ± 6.3 MPa) exhibited significantly lower flexural strength compared to the groups of IPA (110.7 ± 5.3 MPa), RAY (112.1 ± 5.6 MPa) and YM7 (117.3 ± 5.9 MPa), respectively. Finally, there were no cytotoxic effects of parts cleaned with different post-rinsing solutions.

SIGNIFICANCE

Considering the use of 3D-printed orthodontic appliance materials, different rinsing postprocessing procedures did not affect surface characteristics. However, the flexural strength was significantly influenced, which could be attributed to the chemical ingredients of the post-rinsing solutions. Various post-rinsing treatments had no alternation concerning cytocompatibility.

Experimental Study of Single-Lap, Hybrid Joints, Made of 3D Printed Polymer and Aluminium Adherends

This paper presents the results of an experimental study into single-lap joints. One part of the joint was made as a 3D printed polymer and had cylindrical tenons, while the other part was made of an aluminium flat bar having mortises whose diameter and distribution corresponded to the polymer tenons. In addition to the mechanical joint, a layer of double-sided VHB (Very High Bond) adhesive tape was also placed in the lap, thus creating a hybrid joint. In total, 80 specimens were made, which were divided into four groups: A—specimens with one tenon of different diameters, B—specimens with different number of tenons of the same diameter, C—specimens characterised by multi-stage operation and R—reference specimens, connected only by double-sided adhesive tape. The joints were subjected to uniaxial tensile tests. The force–displacement characteristics obtained and the energy required, up to the point of the failure of the joints, have been analysed in this paper. The four and six-stage joints designed can significantly increase the safety of the structures in which they will be used.

Effect of additive manufacturing method and build angle on surface characteristics and Candida albicans adhesion to 3D printed denture base polymers

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the influence of additive manufacturing method and build angle on surface characteristics and Candida albicans (C. albicans) adhesion to 3D printed denture base polymers.

METHODS

Specimens of 3D printing denture base polymers were prepared by two printers, namely, stereolithography (SLA, Form 3B) and digital light processing technology (DLP, Solflex 350 plus). Three build angles were used: 0°, 45°, and 90°. Surface topography was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Also, arithmetical mean height (S_a) values were calculated. An adhesion test was performed to observe initial C. albicans adhesion to the specimens. The data were statistically analyzed using the two-way analysis of variance and Tukey's multiple comparison test.

RESULTS

The data of S_a values had statistically significant differences, which were mainly determined by the main factor of build angle (p < 0.05). Moreover, the quantitative results of C. albicans adhesion exhibited no significant differences: printing techniques (p = 0.7794) and build angle (p = 0.0589), respectively.

CONCLUSIONS

Surface roughness was significantly influenced by the build angle rather than by the AM method. Whereas, AM method (SLA and DLP) and build angle (0°, 45°, and 90º) had no impacts on the C. albicans adhesion to the 3D printed denture bases.

CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE

Build angle dominates the surface roughness and topography of the 3D printed denture polymers. Our results indicate that C. albicans' adhesion might not be influenced by AM method and build angle.

Applications of three-dimensional printers in prosthetic dentistry

This narrative review aims to provide an overview of recent studies and case reports on three-dimensional (3D) printing, and to verify the applicability of 3D printers in the field of dental prostheses. This review was performed by conducting a search of PubMed. The clinical application of fabricating a prosthesis made with cobalt-chromium is considered possible depending on the material and hardware of the 3D printer. However, it is currently difficult to assess the clinical use of 3D-printed zirconia crowns. Further research is required, such as verification of materials used, margin morphology, and hardware. Clinically acceptable results have been reported for patterns using 3D printers. Interim restorations made using a 3D printer have been reported with good results that are considered clinically usable. Dentures made with 3D printers need further verification in terms of strength and deformation. Custom trays made with 3D printers are clinically useful, however, issues remain with design time and effort. Although several studies have reported the usefulness of 3D printers, further verification is required since 3D printers are still considered new technology.

Effects of printing layer thickness on mechanical properties of 3D-printed custom trays

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

The layer thickness serves as a straightforward and controllable parameter to alter the mechanical properties of 3D-printed custom trays. However, how the printing layer thickness affects the mechanical properties of the trays is not fully understood.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the effects and their underlying mechanisms and to optimize the mechanical properties through modulation of the printing layer thickness.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

Polylactic acid (PLA) specimens were 3D-printed with 5 layer thicknesses from 0.1 mm to 0.5 mm. The bond, flexural, and tensile strengths were measured by using a universal test machine. Postfracture interfaces were examined by means of scanning electron microscopy. Additionally, the printing dimensional accuracy was estimated by measuring the size deviations between the printed and virtual specimens, and the printing times were recorded.

RESULTS

With increasing PLA printing layer thickness, the tensile bond strength first increased and then decreased, peaking at a thickness of 0.4 mm. While the flexural and tensile strengths decreased, the printing dimensional accuracy remained constant from 0.1 mm to 0.4 mm and then decreased at 0.5 mm. The printing time sharply decreased as printing layer thickness increased.

CONCLUSIONS

Moderate layer thickness provided the best properties for 3D-printed custom trays.

Repairability of a 3D printed denture base polymer: Effects of surface treatment and artificial aging on the shear bond strength

OBJECTIVES

The present study aimed to evaluate the repairability of a 3D printed denture base material. The effects of surface treatments and artificial aging on the shear bond strength (SBS) were investigated.

METHODS

A total of 224 specimens were printed by digital light processing technology (Rapid Shape D30II) using a 3D printing denture base material (FREEPRINT denture). To evaluate the repairability, the SBS and failure modes were measured after surface treatment and artificial aging. Specifically, half of the specimens were further performed with thermocycling (5-55 °C, 5000 cycles) for artificial aging. The aged and non-aged specimens were further divided into four subgroups (n = 28) to simulate a denture base repair with one of the following treatments: control (without surface treatment), monomer (applying methylmethacrylate for 120 s), P600 (grinding with P600 silicon carbide paper) and sandblasting (blasted with 125 μm aluminum oxide with 2 bar), respectively. Surface roughness was measured (n = 6) and surface topography was observed by scanning electron microscopy (n = 2). A test rod was built on the sample surface using the same 3D printing material. Afterward, all specimens further underwent thermocycling (5-55 °C, 10,000 cycles).

RESULTS

For non-aged groups, no significant differences in SBS could be found (p < 0.05), and bondings failed cohesively in the denture base material. Regarding the aged control and monomer group, adhesive failures at the interface were primarily observed, and SBS values were statistically lower than those of the other groups (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONS

The 3D printed denture base material exhibited favorable repairability. For the realignment surface, the SBS at the bonding interface is satisfying and additional surface treatments could be not necessary. In contrast, the aged surface could significantly decrease the SBS; hence subtractive surface treatments are highly recommended.
