A Comparison of Emotional Triggers for Eating in Men and Women with Obesity

OBJECTIVE

Emotional eating (EE) is prevalent in people seeking obesity treatment and is a contributor to poor weight loss outcomes. We aimed to delineate the emotions most associated with this type of eating, and whether they differ by sex in people undergoing obesity treatment.

METHODS

A cross-sectional study recruiting 387 adults from a hospital obesity management service. Emotional eating was measured using the Emotional Eating Scale (EES). Separate analyses included all participants, and those undergoing lifestyle interventions alone or in combination with obesity medication and/or bariatric surgery.

RESULTS

A total of 387 people (71% women) participated in the study (n = 187 receiving lifestyle modification alone; n = 200 in combination with additional treatments). Feeling 'bored' was most commonly and most strongly associated with the urge to eat, regardless of sex or treatment. Women had higher scores for total EES, for subscales of depression and anger, and individual feelings of 'blue', 'sad' and 'upset' compared to men.

CONCLUSIONS

Understanding why certain emotions differentially trigger an urge to eat in men and women, and finding strategies to break the link between boredom and eating may enable better personalisation of lifestyle interventions for people with obesity.

Emotional Eating and Weight Status in Adolescents: A Systematic Review

BACKGROUND

Despite evidence that emotional eating is associated with weight gain in adults, less is known about this association in adolescents. The purpose of the current study was to conduct a systematic review to assess the association between emotional eating and weight status in adolescents. This study also sought to describe existing measures of emotional eating in adolescents and explore weight-loss interventions that assessed emotional eating in relation to weight status in this population.

METHODS

Two independent reviewers searched the database PubMed for published or in press peer-reviewed studies that assessed the association between emotional eating and weight status in adolescents aged 12 to 19 years. Studies were excluded from this review if they were not written in the English language, did not include a measure of emotional eating, or were a dissertation study.

RESULTS

A total of 13 studies met full inclusion criteria and were included in the systematic review. Of the six longitudinal studies in the review, only one found a prospective association between emotional eating and weight status. The Dutch Eating Behavior Questionnaire was the most widely used measure of emotional eating in the systematic review (n = 6; 46.2%). The one intervention study included in this review found that baseline emotional eating was not associated with weight outcomes 2 years following gastric bypass surgery in obese Swedish adolescents (13-18 years).

CONCLUSIONS

While there were some inconsistent findings across the studies included in this review, taken as a whole, the results largely do not support an association between emotional eating and elevated weight status or reduced weight loss in adolescents.

Is it possible to obtain food consumption information through children's drawings? Comparison with the Free Listing

The aims of this research were 1) to study the children's drawings to obtain scientific information about food consumption; 2) to compare this method with an existing one (Free Listing); and 3) to compare fruits- and vegetables-consumed by children of different cultural groups within a same country. Children (n = 105) from two Argentinian cities (Salta in the northwest and 9 de Julio in the Pampean region), reported the fruits and vegetables they consumed, with the Free Listing and the new Free Drawing methods. Contingency tables were built and cognitive saliency indexes (CSI) were calculated. Children evoked 57 fruits and 54 vegetables by both methods, which were then grouped into 31 fruit and 27 vegetable categories. The advantages and limitations of the methods are discussed. Throughout Free Drawing, each food was defined by its name, shape and colour, which allowed better discrimination between varieties. Children from Salta reported consuming more fruits (63.7%) and vegetables (68.6%) than those from 9 de Julio (p < 0.05). Differences between cultural groups were found in 10 fruits and 7 vegetables, mentioned more frequently in Salta, where regional crops arose principally by Free Listing. The CSI did not depend on the method used but, for vegetables, they were affected by the cultural group. The fruits with the greatest CSI were banana and apples followed by orange (CSI≥0.19). Tomatoes, carrot and pumpkins showed the highest CSI in 9 de Julio; while carrot, tomatoes, varieties of lettuce and potatoes had the highest CSI in Salta (0.17 ≤ CSI≤0.33). Free Drawing is a qualitative alternative to study food consumption in children populations through a fun activity without the need for assistants.

The Emotional Eating Scale Adapted for Children and Adolescents (EES-C): development and preliminary validation of a short-form

The 25-item Emotional Eating Scale for children and adolescents (EES-C) is a psychometrically sound instrument that measures the extent to which youth eat in response to negative emotions. Nonetheless, questionnaire length may serve as a barrier to routine administration in clinical and school settings, and diminish the likelihood of the measure being utilized in population-wide health studies. The present study reported on the development and preliminary validation of a short-form of EES-C using data from two previously published studies. Guidelines for the development of short-form questionnaires, content and factor analyses, and other indices including standard deviations, item-total correlations, inter-item correlations, Cronbach's alpha without the item, and floor/ceiling effects were examined to develop a 10-item EES-C Short-Form. The EES-C Short-Form demonstrated acceptable psychometric properties, including good internal consistency reliability (alpha = .87) and a high degree of overlapping variance with the original EES-C Total Score and Subscale Scores (r = .71 to .96). The EES-C Short-Form also manifested a unidimensional factor structure in an Exploratory Factor Analysis, supporting construct validity. Taken together, results from the current study provide preliminary evidence of the reliability and validity of a 10-item EES-C Short-Form.

Avoidant coping moderates the relationship between stress and depressive emotional eating in adolescents

BACKGROUND

Studies with adults support an association between emotional eating and avoidant and emotion-focused coping styles. While an avoidant coping style has been identified as a risk-factor for eating disorders in adolescents, no studies to date have specifically examined the relationship between coping styles and emotional eating in this population. The purpose of the present study was to assess whether coping styles moderate the relationship between perceived stress and emotional eating in adolescents.

METHOD

Two hundred and seventy-seven middle school students (mean age = 13.26 years; SD = 0.49) completed the Emotional Eating Scale for Children and Adolescents, the Perceived Stress Scale, the Children's Coping Strategies Checklist, and a brief demographic survey. Four separate multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to determine the interactive effects of perceived stress and coping styles on emotional eating.

RESULTS

The interaction between perceived stress and an avoidant coping style accounted for a significant amount of variance in the Emotional Eating Depression subscale score (EES-C-DEP); at higher levels of perceived stress, an avoidant coping style increased an adolescent's propensity for depressive emotional eating.

CONCLUSIONS

The present findings provide preliminary support for targeting an avoidant coping style in preventative interventions, particularly for youth that have the propensity to overeat in response to feelings of depression.
