Assessing hedonic hunger among Chinese adults using the Power of Food Scale: Psychometric properties and cross-cultural invariance between China and the US

Psychometric network analysis of the Intuitive Eating Scale-2 in Chinese general adults

The Intuitive Eating Scale-2 (IES-2) is a measure of intuitive eating behaviors that has been extensively validated, with traditional latent variable modeling approaches, in youth and adults from many different populations, including college students in China. However, there is still a lack of research on the psychometric properties of the IES-2 in adults from the Chinese general population. Moreover, psychometric network analysis, as a complement to traditional latent variable modeling approaches, has not been used for examining the psychometric properties of the IES-2. Thus, the present study used a psychometric network approach to evaluate the psychometric properties of the IES-2 in Chinese adults from the general population. A sample of 700 Chinese general adults (50% women; Mage = 31.13 years, SD = 9.19) recruited online were included in the present study. Psychometric network analysis was performed. Exploratory graph analysis (EGA) identified four dimensions, which were well separated in the estimated network. The network structure showed excellent stability and metric measurement invariance (i.e., network loadings) across men and women. Furthermore, several items on the IES-2 were identified as key nodes in the network of the IES-2 that may be important for the development and maintenance of intuitive eating. For example, two items (i.e., "I trust my body to tell me when to eat," and "I trust my body to tell me when to stop eating") related to reliance on body cues were the most impactful nodes in the complete network. The findings of our study provide a greater understanding of the IES-2 from the perspective of network analysis and have implications for applications of intuitive eating interventions for general populations.

Cross-sectional association study of hedonic hunger, self-control, cognitive distortion, and well-being with adiposity measures among a sample of urban Malaysian adults

BACKGROUND

We assessed the association of hedonic hunger, self-control (impulsivity and restraint), cognitive distortion (CD), and well-being with adiposity measures such as waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), body mass index (BMI), total body fat (TBF), subcutaneous fat (SF), visceral fat level (VFL), skeletal muscle percentage (SM), and resting metabolism (RM), among a sample of urban Malaysian adults at Sunway University and Sunway College, Selangor, Malaysia.

METHODS

Among 186 participants (M/F = 51/135; aged 22.1 ± 5.0), psychometrics were assessed using Power of Food Scale (PFS), Brief Self-Control Scale, CD Questionnaire (CD-Quest), and WHO-5 Well-being Index. Blood pressures, anthropometrics and body compositions were also measured using standard methods and bioimpedance.

RESULTS

Men had significantly higher well-being, but lower overall self-control, impulsivity and Food Available hedonic hunger. Those with moderate/severe CD had higher odds ratio (OR) of having high central adiposity, compared with those with absent/slight CD (OR: 2.52;95% CI: 1.14, 5.61; p = 0.023 for WC and OR: 2.50; 95% CI: 1.19, 5.23; p = 0.015 for WHR). Higher CD and PFS scores were strongly significantly correlated with higher systolic blood pressure (SBP), WC, WHR, WHtR, BMI, TBF, SF, VFL and RM. Lower self-control was weakly correlated with higher WC, while lower impulsivity and restraint were weakly correlated with higher VFL. Those who were overweight, obese, and in high TBF class had significantly higher PFS Aggregate Factor scores. Food Available and Food Present scores, but not Food Tasted, were also significantly higher among overweight participants.

CONCLUSIONS

Higher hedonic hunger and CD were associated with higher SBP and all adiposity measures. Overweight participants had higher hedonic hunger in the context of ready availability and physical presence of highly palatable foods. Lower self-control was weakly correlated with higher central adiposity; lower impulsivity and restraint were weakly correlated with higher visceral adiposity. These findings have provided some insights into the cognitive factors underlying adiposity.

Psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the oncology nurses health behaviors determinants scale: a cross-sectional study

Objective

To test the validity and reliability of the Oncology Nurses Health Behaviors Determinants Scale (HBDS-ON) in oncology nurses, the Chinese version was developed.

Methods

The Brislin double translation-back translation approach was employed to forward translation, back translation, synthesis, cross-cultural adaptation, and pre-survey, resulting in the first Chinese version of the Oncology Nurses Health Behaviors Determinants Scale (HBDS-ON). A convenience sample technique was used to select 350 study participants in Liaoning, Shandong, and Jiangsu, China, who satisfied the inclusion and exclusion criteria, to assess the validity and reliability of the scale.

Results

The Chinese version of the Oncology Nurses Health Behaviors Determinants Scale (HBDS-ON) had six subscales (perceived threat, perceived benefits, perceived barriers, self-efficacy, cues to action, and personal protective equipment availability and accessibility), including 29 items. The average scale level was 0.931, and the content validity level of the items varied from 0.857 to 1.000. Each Cronbach's α coefficient had an acceptable internal consistency reliability range of 0.806 to 0.902. X2/df = 1.667, RMSEA = 0.044, RMR = 0.018, CFI = 0.959, NFI = 0.905, TLI = 0.954, and IFI = 0.960 were the model fit outcomes in the validation factor analysis. All of the model fit markers fell within reasonable bounds.

Conclusion

The Chinese version of the Oncology Nurses Health Behaviors Determinants Scale (HBDS-ON) has good reliability and validity and can be used as a tool to assess the influencing factors of chemotherapy exposure for oncology nurses in China.

The relationship between psychological distress and weight maintenance in weight cycling: mediating role of eating behavior

BACKGROUND

Obesity is a global public health concern. The goal of this study was to see if eating habits could mediate the relationship between psychological distress and weight maintenance in a population with a history of weight cycling.

METHODS

A 3-month outpatient intervention consisting of a diet and exercise program was provided to 153 participants. Psychological distress, appetite, and behavior were assessed at the beginning and end of the study. Anthropometric measurements were taken at baseline and six months.

RESULTS

After the structural equation model was developed, it was discovered that the psychological status of people with obesity and weight cycling histories correlated with the weight loss outcome effect (three and six months). This effect was mediated by factors related to eating behavior. Associative psychological factors had a direct effect on eating behavior (three months: β = 0.181, 95% CI: 0.055-0.310; six months: β = 0.182, 95% CI: 0.039-0.332) and appetite had a direct effect on eating behavior (three months: β = 0.600, 95% CI: 0.514-0.717; six months: β = 0.581, 95% CI: 0.457-0.713), both of which were significant (p < 0.01). At three months, psychological distress has a more substantial positive impact on weight change, with eating behavior acting as a partial mediator. At six months, there was no support for appetite's moderating role in eating behavior.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings suggest that psychological interventions should be strengthened to improve weight loss effectiveness, particularly in participants with a history of weight cycling, making weight loss more complicated and prone to rebound.
