Assessing natural clays of a contaminated site to stabilize and reduce the ecotoxicity of a coal tar

The validation of converting pyrite ash-contaminated soil into End-of-Waste by the High-Performance Solidification/Stabilization process application

One of the major challenges to establishing more sustainable management strategies than landfill disposal of metals-contaminated soils is the lack of End-of-Waste (EoW) criteria defined at the European and national levels. Another limitation stems from the scarcity of information on industrial-scale applications of treatment technologies able to obtain safe and reusable materials from such contaminated waste. In this context, the High-Performance Solidification/Stabilization process was applied for the full-scale remediation of pyrite ash-contaminated soil (ca. 24 000 m³ ), and a dedicated sampling and analytical protocol was developed and implemented to verify if the treated material obtained complied with the general EoW criteria established by article 6 of the Waste Framework Directive 2008/98/EC. The results of the leaching, ecotoxicological, and mechanical tests carried out on representative samples of the treated soil showed that this material (ca. 19 000 m³ ) could be classified as EoW and thus was deemed reusable both in-situ as filler for the excavation and ex-situ as road construction material. These results improve the knowledge of the performance of a state-of-the-art technique for the treatment of metals-contaminated soil. Furthermore, the developed monitoring plan can support future assessments on the compliance of materials obtained from contaminated soil with the general EoW criteria. The pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis

The freshwater snail Lymnaea stagnalis has a long research history, but only relatively recently has it emerged as an attractive model organism to study molecular mechanisms in the areas of developmental biology and translational medicine such as learning/memory and neurodegenerative diseases. The species has the advantage of being a hermaphrodite and can both cross- and self-mate, which greatly facilitates genetic approaches. The establishment of body-handedness, or chiromorphogenesis, is a major topic of study, since chirality is evident in the shell coiling. Chirality is maternally inherited, and only recently a gene-editing approach identified the actin-related gene Lsdia1 as the key handedness determinant. This short article reviews the natural habitat, life cycle, major research questions and interests, and experimental approaches.

Impact of ageing and soil contaminants on telomere length in the land snail

Telomeres (TLs) are non-coding DNA sequences that are usually shortened with ageing and/or chemical exposure. Bioindicators such as the land snail can be used to assess the environmental risk of contaminated soils. As for most invertebrates, the evolution of TLs with ageing or exposure to contaminants is unknown in this mollusc. The aims of this study were to explore the relationships between ageing, contaminant exposure, sublethal effects and TL length in the terrestrial gastropod Cantareus aspersus. TL length was investigated in haemocytes from five age classes of C. aspersus. The impact of contaminants on sub-adult snails exposed to Cd, Hg or a mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils for one or two months was studied. Bioaccumulation, growth, sexual maturity and TLs were measured. TL attrition was significant for the juvenile and sub-adult stages, but not later. Exposure to Cd increased the mortality (around 30%). Exposure to polluted soils inhibited growth (19-40%) and sexual maturity (6-100%). Although the health of the snails exposed to Cd, Hg and PAHs was altered, TL length in haemocytes was not disturbed, suggesting a high capacity of this snail species to maintain its TLs in haemocytes under chemical stress. These results first address TL length in snails and reveal that the relationship commonly proposed for vertebrates between TL shortening and ageing or exposure to contaminants cannot be generalized.
