Global trends in pesticides: A looming threat and viable alternatives

Combining Vis-NIR and NIR hyperspectral imaging techniques with a data fusion strategy for prediction of norfloxacin residues in mutton

Norfloxacin is an antibacterial compound that belongs to the fluoroquinolone family. Currently, hyperspectral imaging (HSI) for the detection of antibiotic residues focuses mostly on individual systems. Attempts to integrate different HSI systems with complementary spectral ranges are still lacking. This study investigates the feasibility of applying data fusion strategies with two HSI techniques (Visible near-infrared and near-infrared) in combination to predict norfloxacin residue levels in mutton. Spectral data from the two spectral techniques were analyzed using partial least squares regression (PLSR), support vector regression (SVR) and stochastic configuration networks (SCN), respectively, and the two data fusion strategies were fused at the data level (low-level fusion) and feature level (middle-level fusion, mid-level fusion). The results indicated that the modeling performance of the two fused datasets was better than that of the individual systems. Mid-level fusion data achieved the best model based on uninformative variable elimination (UVE) combined with SCN, in which the determination coefficient of prediction set (R2p) of 0.9312, (root mean square error of prediction set) RMSEP of 0.3316 and residual prediction deviation (RPD) of 2.7434, in comparison with all others. Therefore, two HSI systems with complementary spectral ranges, combined with data fusion strategies and feature selection, could be used synergistically to improve the detection of norfloxacin residues. This study may provide a valuable reference for the non-destructive detection of antibiotic residues in meat.

Toxicity potential of a pyraclostrobin-based fungicide in plant and green microalgae models

Pyraclostrobin-based fungicides play an effective role in controlling fungal diseases and are extensively used in agriculture. However, there is concern regarding the potential adverse effects attributed to exposure to these fungicides on non-target organisms and consequent influence exerted on ecosystem functioning. Thus, it is essential to conduct studies with model organisms to determine the impacts of these fungicides on different groups of living organisms. The aim of this study was to examine the ecotoxicity associated with exposure to commercial fungicides containing pyraclostrobin. The focus of the analysis involved germination and initial development of seedlings of 4 plant models (Lactuca sativa, Raphanus sativus, Pennisetum glaucum and Triticum aestivum), in addition to determining the population growth rate and total carbohydrate content in microalga Raphidocelis subcapitata. The fungicide pyraclostrobin adversely influenced growth and development of the tested plants, indicating a toxic effect. The fungicide exerted a significant impact on the initial development of seedlings of all model species examined with T. aestivum plants displaying the greatest susceptibility to pyraclostrobin. Plants of this species exhibited inhibitory effects on both aerial parts and roots when treated with a concentration of 4.75 mg/L pyraclostrobin. In addition, the green microalga R. subcapitata was also significantly affected by the fungicide, especially at relatively high concentrations as evidenced by a reduction in total carbohydrate content. This commercial fungicide demonstrated potential phytotoxicity for the tested plant models and was also considered toxic to the selected microalgae, indicating an ecotoxic effect that might affect other organisms in aquatic environments.

Sustainable lignin-modified epoxy nanocarriers for enhanced foliar insecticide efficacy and food safety

Reducing pesticide residues while extending their efficacy period is a critical challenge in the development of controlled-release pesticides. This study focuses on loading avermectin onto lignin-modified epoxy resin nanocarriers via the creation of photostable nanocapsules (NCs) for evaluating their efficacy against Plutella xylostella. This study also assesses the NCs' resistance to water scour on plant leaves by comparing them with traditional preparations. These NCs feature a stable core-shell structure, an encapsulation efficiency of 92.90 % and slow-release properties. Compared to emulsifiable concentrate (EC) and microemulsion (ME) under UV irradiation, the loading of nanocarriers significantly prolonged the degradation time of avermectin by fivefold. The Nano-formula demonstrated enhanced insecticidal activity in comparison to traditional preparations. Field tests revealed that the efficacy of the NCs on Day 7 (92.55 %) and Day 14 (78.54 %) significantly surpassed that of traditional preparations. Additionally, NCs are more readily washed off cabbage leaves by water than EC and ME, aiding in the reduction of pesticide residues. This technology is particularly suitable for leafy vegetable crops in arid regions or greenhouses, enhancing effectiveness period while minimizing pesticide residues. This research offers novel insights and directions for the development of controlled-release pesticides.

Serum albumin and liver dysfunction mediate the associations between organophosphorus pesticide exposure and hypertension among US adults

BACKGROUND

Human health is commonly threatened by organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) due to their widespread use and biological characteristics. However, the combined effect of mixtures of OPPs metabolites on the risk of hypertension and potential mechanism remain limited.

OBJECTIVES

To comprehensively investigate the effects between OPPs exposure on hypertension risk and explore and underlying mechanism among US general population.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study collected US adults who had available data on urine OPPs metabolites (dialkyl phosphate compounds, DAPs) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to assess the relationships of DAPs with hypertension risk. Survey-weighted logistic regression, restricted cubic spline (RCS), and mixed exposure analysis models [weighted quantile sum regression (WQS) and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR)] were used to analyze individual, dose-response and combined associations between urinary DAPs metabolites and hypertension risk, respectively. Mediation analysis determined the potential intermediary role of serum albumin and liver function in the above associations.

RESULTS

Compared with the reference group, participants with the highest tertile levels of DEP, DMTP, DETP, and DMDTP experienced increased risk of hypertension by 1.21-fold (95%CI: 1.02-1.36), 1.20-fold (95%CI: 1.02-1.42), 1.19-fold (95%CI: 1.01-1.40), and 1.17-fold (95%CI: 1.03-1.43), respectively. RCS curve also showed positive exposure-response associations of individual DAPs with hypertension risk. WQS and BKMR analysis further confirmed DAP mixtures were significantly associated with increased risk of hypertension, with DEP identified as a major contributor to the combined effect. Mediation analysis indicated that serum albumin and AST/ALT ratios played crucial mediating roles in the relationships between individual and mixed urinary DAPs and the prevalence of hypertension.

CONCLUSION

Our findings provided more comprehensive and novel perspectives into the individual and combined effects of urinary OPPs matabolites on the increased risk of hypertension and the possible driving mechanism, which would be of great significance for environmental control and early prevention of hypertension.

Occupational Exposure to Pesticides, Personal Protection, and Willingness to Reduce Chemical Sprayings Among Iranian Greenhouse Farmers

OBJECTIVES

The level of greenhouse farmers' personal protection in pesticide use and the possibility of environmental protection through farmers' willingness to reduce chemical sprayings were assessed in Khuzestan Province, Iran.

METHODS

A survey of 80 active greenhouse vegetable growers was carried out in 2021 with face-to-face interviews. Willingness to reduce chemical sprayings was examined with the theory of planned behavior (TPB) model.

RESULTS

Several intoxication symptoms were reported, with the most common symptom of pesticide intoxication being dizziness. Farmers showed unsafe or rather unsafe use of personal protective equipment (PPE) during pesticide handling. The maximum use of PPE pertained to the use of mask, spray clothing, and long-sleeved shirts. On a scale from 1 (= totally disagree) to 5 (= totally agree), the respondents showed negative attitudes towards reducing chemical sprayings (mean = 2.30), rather low levels of subjective norms (mean = 2.67), and rather low levels of perceived behavioral control over reduction of chemical sprayings (mean = 2.76). The TPB variables accounted for 73% of the variance in farmers' behavioral intention. Overall, farmers' behavioral intention to reduce chemical sprayings was almost neutral.

CONCLUSION

Increasing knowledge of the adverse effects of pesticides on health is necessary to promote safety behavior of farmers in the greenhouse.

Achievements and perspectives of synthetic biology in botanical insecticides

Botanical insecticides are the origin of all insecticidal compounds. They have been widely used to control pests in crops for a long time. Currently, the commercial production of botanical insecticides extracted from plants is limited because of insufficient raw material supply. Synthetic biology is a promising and effective approach for addressing the current problems of the production of botanical insecticides. It is an emerging biological research hotspot in the field of botanical insecticides. However, the biosynthetic pathways of many botanical insecticides are not completely elucidated. On the other hand, the cytotoxicity of botanical pesticides and low efficiency of these biosynthetic enzymes in new hosts make it still challenging for their heterologous production. In the present review, we summarized the recent developments in the heterologous production of botanical insecticides, analyzed the current challenges, and discussed the feasible production strategies, focusing on elucidating biosynthetic pathways, enzyme engineering, host engineering, and cytotoxicity engineering. Looking to the future, synthetic biology promises to further advance heterologous production of more botanical pesticides.

Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)-based biopesticide: Navigating success, challenges, and future horizons in sustainable pest control

The global demand for food production is escalating, necessitating innovative approaches to mitigate pest-related crop losses. Conventional pest management using synthetic pesticides has several drawbacks, promoting the search for eco-friendly alternatives such as biopesticides. Among these, Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt)-based biopesticides have emerged as a promising option due to their specificity, sustainability, and safety. This article reviews the success and application of Bt as a biopesticide, analysing its environmental impacts, formulation strategies, marketing trends and associated challenges. The environment impact of Bt is multifaceted, influencing soil ecosystems, plant-associated habitats, and non-target organisms. It interacts dynamically with soil invertebrates and affects both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, demonstrating a complex ecological footprint. The market for Bt-based biopesticide is expanding, driven by their proven efficacy and eco-friendliness with projections indicating continued growth. Despite the promising market trends, regulatory hurdles and formulation complexities remain significant obstacles. Addressing these challenges require collaborative efforts to streamline processes and enhance market acceptance. Nonetheless, the future of Bt-based biopesticide appears promising. Ongoing research is focused on advanced formulations, expanding the range of targeted pests and fostering regulatory cooperation, underscoring the pivotal role of Bt-based biopesticide in sustainable agriculture.

Hazardous fipronil insecticide effects on aquatic animals' health: Historical review and trends

Fipronil (FIP) is a broad-spectrum and highly efficient insecticide used against several arthropod pests, such as parasitic mites and insect pests affecting both animals and plants. Given its several benefits, FIP is widely used in the agricultural and veterinary medicine fields, but its indiscriminate use can have ecotoxic effects on non-target species. Thus, the current study aimed to summarise and critically analyse FIP's ecotoxicity in aquatic animals. Data referring to bibliometric parameters (publication year and geographical distribution), experimental conditions (field and laboratory, FIP type, animal class, species, habitat, and exposure conditions), and biomarkers (oxidative stress, DNA damage, neurotoxicity, and morphological changes) were summarised and critically analysed. Ecotoxicological studies were mainly conducted with insects, crustaceans, molluscs, and fish. Exposure to pure FIP or FIP-based commercial formulation can induce mortality and have sublethal effects on non-target organisms, such as increased reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative damage, genotoxicity (DNA damage), neurotoxicity, and morphological changes. The herein reviewed data have evidenced high median lethal FIP concentration (LC50) in vertebrates in comparison to invertebrates. The current findings confirmed that FIP can have several effects on aquatic organisms, besides suggesting potential ecotoxicological risks posed by this insecticide.

Assessment of pesticide residues: a comprehensive analysis of seasonal trends and health implications

This study assessed the presence of eight pesticide residues in the Indus River, Mianwali, Pakistan, focusing on three sampling sites (S1, S2, and S3) in water, sediment, and the fish species Cyprinus carpio during both dry and wet seasons. Analysis was conducted using gas chromatography with an electron capture detector. Results indicated elevated pesticide concentrations in both seasons, with levels of 0.84 and 0.62 μg/L in water, 12.47 and 9.21 μg/g/dw in sediment, and 17.33 and 12.17 μg/g/ww in fish, with higher concentrations observed during the dry season. Cypermethrin and carbofuran were the primary pesticides detected in water, while endosulfan and cypermethrin were dominant in sediment and fish tissue, often exceeding standard safety thresholds. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis revealed stronger correlations between sediment and fish muscle, with varying associations among pesticides across seasons. The Hazard Index (HI) surpassed 1 in both seasons, signaling potential health risks to humans. These findings underscore the substantial risk agricultural pesticides pose to the aquatic ecosystem and food chain, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable agricultural practices and stricter regulations to minimize pesticide use and encourage eco-friendly pest management strategies.

Unraveling the pesticide-diabetes connection: A case-cohort study integrating Mendelian randomization analysis with a focus on physical activity's mitigating effect

BACKGROUND AND AIMS

There is no evidence on the longitudinal and causal associations between multiple pesticides and the incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the Chinese rural population, and whether physical activity (PA) modified these associations remains unclear. Here, we aimed to investigate the longitudinal and causal associations between pesticides mixture and T2DM, and determine whether PA modified these associations.

METHODS

A total of 925 subjects with normal glucose and 925 subjects with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) were enrolled in this case-cohort study. A total of 51 targeted pesticides were quantified at baseline. Logistic regression, quantile g-computation, and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) were used to assess the individual and combined effects of pesticides on IFG and T2DM. Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis was employed to obtain the causal association between pesticides and T2DM.

RESULTS

After 3-year follow-up, one-unit increment in ln-isofenphos, ln-malathion, and ln-deltamethrin were associated with an increase conversion of IFG to T2DM (FDR-P<0.05). One quartile increment in organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), organophosphorus pesticides (OPs), herbicides and pyrethroids mixtures were related to a higher incidence of T2DM among IFG patients (P<0.05). The BKMR results showed a positive trend between exposure to pesticides mixture and T2DM. The MR analysis indicated a positive association between exposure to pesticides and T2DM risk (P<0.05). No any significant association was found between pesticides and IFG. In addition, compared to subjects with high levels of PA, those with low levels of PA were related to increased risk of T2DM with the increased levels of pesticides among IFG patients.

CONCLUSIONS

Individual and combined exposure to pesticides increased the incidence of T2DM among IFG patients. MR analysis further supported the causal association of pesticides exposure with T2DM risk. Our study furtherly indicated that high levels of PA attenuated the diabetogenic effect of pesticides exposure.

High-throughput screening of 222 pesticides in road environments in a megacity of northern China: A new approach to urban population exposure

A large number of pesticides have been widely manufactured and applied, and are released into the environment with negative impact on human health. Pesticides are largely used in densely populated urban environments, in green zones, along roads and on private properties. In order to characterize the potential exposure related health effects of pesticide and their occurrence in the urban environment, 222 pesticides were screened and quantified in 228 road dust and 156 green-belt soil samples in autumn and spring from Harbin, a megacity in China, using GC-MS/MS base quantitative trace analysis. The results showed that a total of 33 pesticides were detected in road dust and green-belt soil, with the total concentrations of 650 and 236 ng/g (dry weight = dw), respectively. The concentrations of pesticides in road dust were significantly higher than that in green-belt soil. Pesticides in the environment were influenced by the seasons, with the highest concentrations of insecticides in autumn and the highest levels of herbicides in spring. In road dust, the concentrations of highways in autumn and spring (with the mean values of 94.1 and 68.2 ng/g dw) were much lower than that of the other road classes (arterial roads, sub-arterial roads and branch ways). Whereas in the green-belt soil, there was no significant difference in the concentration of pesticides between the different road classes. A first risk assessment was conducted to evaluate the potential adverse health effects of the pesticides, the results showed that the highest hazard index (HI) for a single pesticide in dust and soil was 0.12, the hazard index for children was higher than that for adults, with an overall hazard index of less than 1. Our results indicated that pesticide levels do not have a significant health impact on people.

Synergistic insights into pesticide persistence and microbial dynamics for bioremediation

Rampant use of fertilizers and pesticides for boosting agricultural crop productivity has proven detrimental impact on land, water, and air quality globally. Although fertilizers and pesticides ensure greater food security, their unscientific management negatively impacts soil fertility, structure of soil microbiome and ultimately human health and hygiene. Pesticides exert varying impacts on soil properties and microbial community functions, contingent on factors such as their chemical structure, mode of action, toxicity, and dose-response characteristics. The diversity of bacterial responses to different pesticides presents a valuable opportunity for pesticide remediation. In this context, OMICS technologies are currently under development, and notable advancements in gene editing, including CRISPR technologies, have facilitated bacterial engineering, opening promising avenues for reducing toxicity and enhancing biological remediation. This paper provides a holistic overview of pesticide dynamics, with a specific focus on organophosphate, organochlorine, and pyrethroids. It covers their occurrence, activity, and potential mitigation strategies, with an emphasis on the microbial degradation route. Subsequently, the pesticide degradation pathways, associated genes and regulatory mechanisms, associated OMICS approaches in soil microbes with a special emphasis on CRISPR/Cas9 are also being discussed. Here, we analyze key environmental factors that significantly impact pesticide degradation mechanisms and underscore the urgency of developing alternative strategies to diminish our reliance on synthetic chemicals.

Nanozyme coating-gated multifunctional COF composite based dual-ratio enhanced dual-mode sensor for highly sensitive and reliable detection of organophosphorus pesticides in real samples

The reliable detection of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) in complex matrices remains an enormous challenge due to inevitable interference of sample matrices and testing factors. To address this issue, we designed a nanozyme-coated mesoporous COF with guest molecule loading, and successfully used it to construct a dual-ratio dual-mode sensor through target-regulated signal generation. The multifunctional COF-based composite (MB/COF@MnO2, MCM) featured high loading of methylene blue (MB), oxidase-like MnO2 coatings as gatekeepers, and specific recognition of thiocholine (TCh). TCh, a regulator produced from acetylcholinesterase (AChE)-catalyzed hydrolysis of acetylthiocholine, could decompose MnO2 coatings, triggering the release of abundant MB and oxidation of few o-phenylenediamine (OPD). OPs, strong inhibitors of AChE, could restrain TCh production and MnO2 decomposition, thereby controlling the release of less MB and oxidation of more OPD. This regulation boosted the dual-ratio dual-mode assay of OPs by using the released MB and oxidized OPD in the solution as testing signals, measured by both fluorescent and electrochemical methods. Experimental results demonstrated the sensitive detection of dichlorvos with LODs of 0.083 and 0.026 ng/mL via the fluorescent/electrochemical mode, respectively. This study represented a creative endeavor to develop dual-ratio dual-mode sensors for OPs detection in complex samples, offering high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, and good reliability.

Unveiling Drimenol: A Phytochemical with Multifaceted Bioactivities

Drimenol, a phytochemical with a distinct odor is found in edible aromatic plants, such as Polygonum minus (known as kesum in Malaysia) and Drimys winteri. Recently, drimenol has received increasing attention owing to its diverse biological activities. This review offers the first extensive overview of drimenol, covering its sources, bioactivities, and derivatives. Notably, drimenol possesses a wide spectrum of biological activities, including antifungal, antibacterial, anti-insect, antiparasitic, cytotoxic, anticancer, and antioxidant effects. Moreover, some mechanisms of its activities, such as its antifungal effects against human mycoses and anticancer activities, have been investigated. However, there are still several crucial issues in the research on drimenol, such as the lack of experimental understanding of its pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, and toxicity. By synthesizing current research findings, this review aims to present a holistic understanding of drimenol, paving the way for future studies and its potential utilization in diverse fields.

Temperature and land use change are associated with Rana temporaria reproductive success and phenology

Chemical pollution, land cover change, and climate change have all been established as important drivers of amphibian reproductive success and phenology. However, little is known about the relative impacts of these anthropogenic stressors, nor how they may interact to alter amphibian population dynamics. Addressing this gap in our knowledge is important, as it allows us to identify and prioritise the most needed conservation actions. Here, we use long-term datasets to investigate landscape-scale drivers of variation in the reproductive success and phenology of UK Common frog (Rana temporaria) populations. Consistent with predictions, we found that increasing mean temperatures resulted in earlier initialisation of spawning, and earlier hatching, but these relationships were not consistent across all sites. Lower temperatures were also linked to increased spawn mortality. However, temperature increases were also strongly correlated with increases in urban area, arable area, and nitrate levels in the vicinity of spawning grounds. As with spawning and hatching, there was marked spatial variation in spawn mortality trends, where some sites exhibited steady increases over time in the proportion of dead or diseased spawn. These findings support previous work linking warming temperatures to shifts in timing of amphibian breeding, but also highlight the importance of assessing the effect of land use change and pollution on wild amphibian populations. These results have implications for our understanding of the response of wild amphibian populations to climate change, and the management of human-dominated landscapes for declining wildlife populations.

Impact of seawater temperature and physical-chemical properties on sorption of pharmaceuticals, stimulants, and biocides to marine particles

Pharmaceuticals, stimulants, and biocides enter the environment via wastewater from urban, domestic, and industrial areas, in addition to sewage, aquaculture and agriculture runoff. While some of these compounds are easily degradable in environmental conditions, others are more persistent, meaning they are less easily degraded and can stay in the environment for long periods of time. By exploring the adsorptive properties of a wide range of pharmaceuticals, stimulants, and biocides onto particles relevant for marine conditions, we can better understand their environmental behaviour and transport potential. Here, the sorption of 27 such compounds to inorganic (kaolin) and biotic (the microalgae Cryptomonas baltica) marine particles was investigated. Only two compounds sorbed to microalgae, while 23 sorbed to kaolin. The sorption mechanisms between select pharmaceuticals and stimulants and kaolin was assessed through exploring adsorption kinetics (caffeine, ciprofloxacin, citalopram, fluoxetine, and oxolinic acid) and isotherms (ciprofloxacin, citalopram, and fluoxetine). Temperature was shown to have a significant impact on partitioning, and the impact was more pronounced closer to maximum sorption capacity for the individual compounds.

Pesticide levels in shrimp on Mexican coasts

The present review aimed to evaluate the current situation of pesticide residues detected in shrimp (commercial species) on the Mexican coasts. The organochlorine pesticides (OC), α-endosulfan (210.01 ng g-1), endosulfan sulfate (127.5 ng g-1), heptachlor (126.04 ng g-1 and γ-HCH (121.04 ng g-1) are identified as the most common pesticides in shrimp tissues, with the Northwest area reporting the highest concentrations of these OC. Given that there is an under-evaluation of pesticide residue levels, there was a greater contribution of studies directed at the Northwest of the country considering that there are states that are among the main shrimp-producing and consumers entities. The concentrations and types of pesticides banned nationally and globally, due to their toxic effects on the population, were reported. Therefore, since the most current information is 19 years out of date, it is necessary to perform recent evaluations with sensible and precise methods.

Entomopathogenic Bacillus cereus impairs the fitness of the spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii

Drosophila suzukii is a notorious pest which causes devastating damage to thin-skinned fruits, and the larvae feed on the fruit, causing extensive agricultural economic loss. The current application of insecticides to manage this pest results in serious resistance and environmental hazards, so an alternative strategy for D. suzukii biocontrol is urgently needed. Here, we reported that entomopathogenic Bacillus cereus has the potential to biocontrol D. suzukii. We isolated and identified the bacterial strain, B. cereus H1, that was detrimental to the fitness of both D. suzukii progenies and parents. D. suzukii was robustly repelled to depositing eggs on the halves with metabolites of B. cereus H1. Both males and females of D. suzukii were susceptible to B. cereus H1. B. cereus H1 significantly arrested larval development with at least 40% lethal larvae. The median lethal time (LT50) of males and females of D. suzukii challenged with B. cereus H1 was 3 and 2 d, respectively. Moreover, B. cereus H1 disrupted the intestinal integrity and pH value of D. suzukii and resulted in an increase in bacterial load of guts and hemolymph. Mechanistically, infection of B. cereus H1 led to the activation of the dual oxidase (DUOX)-ROS-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) pathway. The findings showed that the entomopathogen B. cereus H1 could potentially act as a biological control agent against D. suzukii, advancing fundamental concepts of integrated pest management programs against D. suzukii.

Association between exposure to organophosphorus pesticide and suicidal ideation among U.S. adults: A population-based study

OBJECTIVE

This study aims to investigate the potential link between exposure to organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) and suicidal ideation (SI) among adults.

METHODS

This study encompassed four cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), involving 5244 participants aged 20 and above. SI was assessed using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. The levels of exposure to OPPs were estimated by analyzing concentrations of OPP metabolites in urine samples. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to explore the association between exposure to each OPP and SI. Stratified analyses and interaction tests were conducted across various groups, including pairwise combinations of gender and age, as well as body mass index, smoking status, hypertension, and diabetes. Weighted Quantile Sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) models were applied to assess the cumulative impact of exposure to the four OPPs on SI, along with their respective contributions. Additionally, the potential interactions among these four OPPs were evaluated.

RESULTS

Multivariate logistic regression revealed that only dimethylthiophosphate (DMTP) among OPPs demonstrated a statistically significant positive association with SI [OR: 1.18; 95 % CI: 1.02-1.37]. Stratified analyses indicated that the influence of OPPs on SI was particularly pronounced in young and older men. The WQS regression analysis revealed a statistically significant association between the mixed metabolites of OPPs and SI [OR = 1.10, 95 % CI: 1.04-1.16], with DMTP (weighted 0.63) contributing the most. Furthermore, the BKMR model supported a positive trend in the overall impact of these OPP metabolites on SI, displaying notable individual exposure-response relationships for DMTP (PIP: 0.77).

CONCLUSIONS

Our study suggests an association between exposure to DMTP and an increased risk of SI. Specifically, young adult males and older males appear particularly susceptible to the effects of OPP exposure.

Virulence and proteomic responses of Metarhizium anisopliae against Aedes albopictus larvae

The tropical climate in Malaysia provides an ideal environment for the rapid proliferation of Aedes mosquitoes, notably Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, prominent vectors of dengue fever. Alarmingly, these species are increasingly developing resistance to conventional pesticides. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Metarhizium anisopliae isolate HSAH5 spores, specifically on conidia (CO) and blastospores (BL), against Ae. albopictus larvae. The study centered on evaluating their pathogenic effects and the resultant changes in protein expression. Spore suspensions with varying concentrations were prepared for larvicidal bioassays, and protein expressions were analysed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Subsequently, protein annotation and network analysis were conducted to elucidate infection mechanisms and the proteomic response. Based on the lethal concentrations and time frames, CO exhibited faster larval mortality than BL at lower concentrations. Despite this, both spore types demonstrated comparable overall pathogenic effects. Results from the proteomic profiling revealed 150 proteins with varied expressions following exposure to Ae. albopictus extract, shedding light on distinct infection strategies between the spores. Gene Ontology enrichment and network analysis illustrated the diverse metabolic adaptations of M. anisopliae and interactions with mosquito larvae. This highlighted the complexity of host-pathogen dynamics and the significance of biosynthetic processes, energy storage, and cellular interaction pathways in disease progression. The BL network, consisting 80 proteins and 74 connections, demonstrates the intricate fungal mechanisms triggered by host stimuli. Conversely, the CO network, though smaller, displayed notable interconnectivity and concentrated involvement at the cell periphery, suggesting a deliberate strategy for initial host contact. This study offers valuable insights into proteome dynamics of M. anisopliae's BL and CO for managing mosquito populations and combating disease transmission, thereby significantly advancing public health and environmental conservation efforts.

Is exposure to pesticides associated with biological aging? A systematic review and meta-analysis

OBJECTIVE

Exposure to pesticides is a risk factor for various diseases, yet its association with biological aging remains unclear. We aimed to systematically investigate the relationship between pesticide exposure and biological aging.

METHODS

PubMed, Embase and Web of Science were searched from inception to August 2023. Observational studies investigating the association between pesticide exposure and biomarkers of biological aging were included. Three-level random-effect meta-analysis was used to synthesize the data. Risk of bias was assessed by the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale.

RESULTS

Twenty studies evaluating the associations between pesticide exposure and biomarkers of biological aging in 10,368 individuals were included. Sixteen reported telomere length and four reported epigenetic clocks. Meta-analysis showed no statistically significant associations between pesticide exposure and the Hannum clock (pooled β = 0.27; 95 %CI: -0.25, 0.79), or telomere length (pooled Hedges'g = -0.46; 95 %CI: -1.10, 0.19). However, the opposite direction of effects for the two outcomes showed an indication of possible accelerated biological aging. After removal of influential effect sizes or low-quality studies, shorter telomere length was found in higher-exposed populations.

CONCLUSION

The existing evidence for associations between pesticide exposure and biological aging is limited due to the scarcity of studies on epigenetic clocks and the substantial heterogeneity across studies on telomere length. High-quality studies incorporating more biomarkers of biological aging, focusing more on active chemical ingredients of pesticides and accounting for potential confounders are needed to enhance our understanding of the impact of pesticides on biological aging.

Response of Soil Microbiota, Enzymes, and Plants to the Fungicide Azoxystrobin

The present study was aimed at assessing the impact of azoxystrobin-a fungicide commonly used in plant protection against pathogens (Amistar 250 SC)-on the soil microbiota and enzymes, as well as plant growth and development. The laboratory experiment was conducted in three analytical terms (30, 60, and 90 days) on sandy clay (pH-7.0). Azoxystrobin was applied to soil in doses of 0.00 (C), 0.110 (F) and 32.92 (P) mg kg-1 d.m. of soil. Its 0.110 mg kg-1 dose stimulated the proliferation of organotrophic bacteria and actinobacteria but inhibited that of fungi. It also contributed to an increase in the colony development index (CD) and a decrease in the ecophysiological diversity index (EP) of all analyzed groups of microorganisms. Azoxystrobin applied at 32.92 mg kg-1 reduced the number and EP of microorganisms and increased their CD. PP952051.1 Bacillus mycoides strain (P), PP952052.1 Prestia megaterium strain (P) bacteria, as well as PP952052.1 Kreatinophyton terreum isolate (P) fungi were identified in the soil contaminated with azoxystrobin, all of which may exhibit resistance to its effects. The azoxystrobin dose of 0.110 mg kg-1 stimulated the activity of all enzymes, whereas its 32.92 mg kg-1 dose inhibited activities of dehydrogenases, alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, and urease and stimulated the activity of catalase. The analyzed fungicide added to the soil at both 0.110 and 32.92 mg kg-1 doses inhibited seed germination and elongation of shoots of Lepidium sativum L., Sinapsis alba L., and Sorgum saccharatum L.

Prediction of Potential Risk for Flupyradifurone and Its Transformation Products to Hydrobionts

Flupyradifurone (FPF) is considered the latest generation of neonicotinoid insecticides. Here, we investigated the toxicity and ecological risk of FPF and its aerobic transformation products (TPs) to aquatic species using the method of prediction. We found that FPF exhibited moderate or high toxicity to some aquatic species. The 5% hazardous concentration of FPF was 3.84 μg/L for aquatic organisms. We obtained 91 aerobic TPs for FPF, and almost half of FPF TPs exhibited toxicity to fish or Daphnia. Eleven of the TPs of FPF exhibited a high or moderate risk to aquatic ecosystems. All FPF TPs with high and moderate risks contained a 6-chloropyridine ring structure, indicating that the derivant of a pyridine ring exhibits potential risks to aquatic ecosystems. Our results provide insight into the potential risk of FPF to aquatic ecosystems and could be used to help set criteria to control pollution caused by FPF.

Pest management facing warming and chemical stresses: Multi-stress effects on the biological agent Trichogramma oleae

Global change is affecting plant-insect interactions in agroecosystems and can have dramatic consequences on yields when causing non-targeted pest outbreaks and threatening the use of pest natural enemies for biocontrol. The vineyard agroecosystem is an interesting system to study multi-stress conditions: on the one hand, agricultural intensification comes with high inputs of copper-based fungicides and, on the other hand, temperatures are rising due to climate change. We investigated interactive and bottom-up effects of both temperature increase and copper-based fungicides exposure on the important Lepidopteran vineyard pest Lobesia botrana and its natural enemy, the oophagous parasitoid Trichogramma oleae. We exposed L. botrana larvae to three increasing copper sulfate concentrations under two fluctuating thermal regimes, one current and one future. Eggs produced by L. botrana were then exposed to T. oleae. Our results showed that the survival of L. botrana, was only reduced by the highest copper sulfate concentration and improved under the warmer regime. The development time of L. botrana was strongly reduced by the warmer regime but increased with increasing copper sulfate concentrations, whereas pupal mass was reduced by both thermal regime and copper sulfate. T. oleae F1 emergence rate was reduced and their development time increased by combined effects of the warmer regime and increasing copper sulfate concentrations. Size, longevity and fecundity of T. oleae F1 decreased with high copper sulfate concentrations. These effects on the moth pest and its natural enemy are probably the result of trade-offs between the survival and the development of L. botrana facing multi-stress conditions and implicate potential consequences for future biological pest control. Our study supplies valuable data on how the interaction between pests and biological control agents is affected by multi-stress conditions.

Immobilized Multi-Enzyme/Nanozyme Biomimetic Cascade Catalysis for Biosensing Applications

Multiple enzyme-induced cascade catalysis has an indispensable role in the process of complex life activities, and is widely used to construct robust biosensors for analyzing various targets. The immobilized multi-enzyme cascade catalysis system is a novel biomimetic catalysis strategy that immobilizes various enzymes with different functions in stable carriers to simulate the synergistic catalysis of multiple enzymes in biological systems, which enables high stability of enzymes and efficiency enzymatic cascade catalysis. Nanozymes, a type of nanomaterial with intrinsic enzyme-like characteristics and excellent stabilities, are also widely applied instead of enzymes to construct immobilized cascade systems, achieving better catalytic performance and reaction stability. Due to good stability, reusability, and remarkably high efficiency, the immobilized multi-enzyme/nanozyme biomimetic cascade catalysis systems show distinct advantages in promoting signal transduction and amplification, thereby attracting vast research interest in biosensing applications. This review focuses on the research progress of the immobilized multi-enzyme/nanozyme biomimetic cascade catalysis systems in recent years. The construction approaches, factors affecting the efficiency, and applications for sensitive biosensing are discussed in detail. Further, their challenges and outlooks for future study are also provided.

Determination of pesticide residues in urine by chromatography-mass spectrometry: methods and applications

Introduction

Pollution has emerged as a significant threat to humanity, necessitating a thorough evaluation of its impacts. As a result, various methods for human biomonitoring have been proposed as vital tools for assessing, managing, and mitigating exposure risks. Among these methods, urine stands out as the most commonly analyzed biological sample and the primary matrix for biomonitoring studies.

Objectives

This review concentrates on exploring the literature concerning residual pesticide determination in urine, utilizing liquid and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, and its practical applications.

Method

The examination focused on methods developed since 2010. Additionally, applications reported between 2015 and 2022 were thoroughly reviewed, utilizing Web of Science as a primary resource.

Synthesis

Recent advancements in chromatography-mass spectrometry technology have significantly enhanced the development of multi-residue methods. These determinations are now capable of simultaneously detecting numerous pesticide residues from various chemical and use classes. Furthermore, these methods encompass analytes from a variety of environmental contaminants, offering a comprehensive approach to biomonitoring. These methodologies have been employed across diverse perspectives, including toxicological studies, assessing pesticide exposure in the general population, occupational exposure among farmers, pest control workers, horticulturists, and florists, as well as investigating consequences during pregnancy and childhood, neurodevelopmental impacts, and reproductive disorders.

Future directions

Such strategies were essential in examining the health risks associated with exposure to complex mixtures, including pesticides and other relevant compounds, thereby painting a broader and more accurate picture of human exposure. Moreover, the implementation of integrated strategies, involving international research initiatives and biomonitoring programs, is crucial to optimize resource utilization, enhancing efficiency in health risk assessment.

Modeling the implications of policy reforms on pesticide risk for Switzerland

Growing public awareness of the negative effects of pesticides on the environment, ecosystems, and human health has led governments to set targets for reducing pesticide risk. Switzerland introduced in 2023 two new policy measures to reduce pesticide risk by 50 % by 2027: (1) voluntary direct payment programs supporting pesticide-reduced and pesticide-free but non-organic cropping systems for most crops on arable land, and (2) restrictions of harmful pesticides for farmers managing under Swiss cross-compliance standards. This study aims to (1) develop a method to assess pesticide risk on a national scale and (2) carry out an ex-ante impact assessment to predict whether these policies can effectively reduce pesticide risks in Switzerland. Therefore, we introduced crop-specific pesticide quantities and pesticide risk scores into a sample of 1907 bio-economic farm optimization models. The models were used to predict farmers' adoption decisions regarding voluntary direct payment programs from 2019 to 2030. By combining the bio-economic farm optimization models with an agent-based modeling approach, we assessed the evolution of pesticide-related risks at the national level. Simulations for pesticide risk from 2019 to 2022 reflected the observed pesticide risk monitored by the Swiss government. In surface waters and semi-natural habitats, achieving the target depends on reducing pyrethroids, a class of insecticides with high-risk potential. Further, we highlight significant uncertainty in projecting the risk potential for surface waters and semi-natural habitats due to uncertainty about the amounts of pyrethroid used for different crops. The results underline the need for comprehensive datasets on pesticide use in Switzerland.

Occurrence and seasonal variation of organochlorine pesticides in selected vegetable farmlands in Lagos State, Nigeria

Pest infestation in crop production have increased farmers' interest in pesticides use with short and long term consequences. This study investigated the occurrence and seasonal variations of organochlorine pesticide residues in vegetable farms in selected areas of Lagos State. Non carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk assessment was also evaluated. Soil samples were collected during the wet and dry seasons at soil depth of 0-30 cm. Gas chromatography coupled with an Agilent mass spectrometer was used to analyse organochlorine residues (alpha-lindane,lindane, delta.-lindane, aldrin, heptachlor epoxide, alpha.-endosulfan, p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (p,p'-DDE), endrin, endosulfan, m,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (m,p'-DDD), endosulfan sulfate, o,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (o,p'-DDT) and endrin ketone) in soil. Heptachlor epoxide showed maximum concentration of 43.03 mg/kg in Station 19 in Western zone during the dry season while m,p'-DDD and endosulfan had minimum value of 0.004 mg/kg in Station 2 and Station 5 respectively during the wet season in the Far eastern zone. The concentrations of organochlorine residues were intermediate in the Eastern zone in both seasons. There was significant (p < 0.05) increase in dry season concentrations when compared to wet season. The risk assessment indicated Hazard Quotient (HQ) > 1 for non-cancer risk and cancer risk > 10-6. Thus a need for stringent monitoring programs for pesticides.

Organochlorine pesticides in Ethiopian waters: Implications for environmental and human health

Despite the global ban on organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) since the 1970s, their use continues in many developing countries, including Ethiopia, primarily due to the lack of viable alternatives and weak regulations. Nonetheless, the extent of contamination and the resulting environmental and health consequences in these countries remain inadequately understood. To address these knowledge gaps, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of reported concentrations (n=398) of OCPs (n=30) in distinct yet interconnected water matrices: water, sediment, and biota in Ethiopia. Our analysis revealed a notable geographical bias, with higher concentrations found in sediments (0.074-1161.2 µg/kg), followed by biota (0.024-1003 µg/kg) and water (0.001-1.85 µg/L). Moreover, DDTs, endosulfan, and hexachlorohexenes (HCHs) were among the most frequently detected OCPs in higher concentrations in Ethiopian waters. The DDT metabolite p,p'-DDE was commonly observed across all three matrices, with concentrations in water birds reaching levels up to 57 and 143,286 times higher than those found in sediment and water, respectively. The findings showed a substantial potential for DDTs and endosulfan to accumulate and biomagnify in Ethiopian waters. Furthermore, it was revealed that the consumption of fish contaminated with DDTs posed both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks while drinking water did not pose significant risks in this regard. Importantly, the issue of OCPs in Ethiopia assumes even greater significance as their concentrations were found to be eight times higher than those of currently used pesticides (CUPs) in Ethiopian waters. Consequently, given the ongoing concerns about OCPs in Ethiopia, there is a need for ongoing monitoring, implementation of sustainable mitigation measures, and strengthening of OCP management systems in the country, as well as in other developing countries with similar settings and practices.

Fabrication of engineered biochar for remediation of toxic contaminants in soil matrices and soil valorization

Biochar has emerged as an efficacious green material for remediation of a wide spectrum of environmental pollutants. Biochar has excellent characteristics and can be used to reduce the bioavailability and leachability of emerging pollutants in soil through adsorption and other physico-chemical reactions. This paper systematically reviewed previous researches on application of biochar/engineered biochar for removal of soil contaminants, and underlying adsorption mechanism. Engineered biochar are derivatives of pristine biochar that are modified by various physico-chemical and biological procedures to improve their adsorption capacities for contaminants. This review will promote the possibility to expand the application of biochar for restoration of degraded lands in the industrial area or saline soil, and further increase the useable area. This review shows that application of biochar is a win-win strategy for recycling and utilization of waste biomass and environmental remediation. Application of biochar for remediation of contaminated soils may provide a new solution to the problem of soil pollution. However, these studies were performed mainly in a laboratory or a small scale, hence, further investigations are required to fill the research gaps and to check real-time applicability of engineered biochar on the industrial contaminated sites for its large-scale application.

Role of Lactic Acid Bacteria in Insecticide Residue Degradation

Lactic acid bacteria are gaining global attention, especially due to their role as a probiotic. They are increasingly being used as a flavoring agent and food preservative. Besides their role in food processing, lactic acid bacteria also have a significant role in degrading insecticide residues in the environment. This review paper highlights the importance of lactic acid bacteria in degrading insecticide residues of various types, such as organochlorines, organophosphorus, synthetic pyrethroids, neonicotinoids, and diamides. The paper discusses the mechanisms employed by lactic acid bacteria to degrade these insecticides, as well as their potential applications in bioremediation. The key enzymes produced by lactic acid bacteria, such as phosphatase and esterase, play a vital role in breaking down insecticide molecules. Furthermore, the paper discusses the challenges and future directions in this field. However, more research is needed to optimize the utilization of lactic acid bacteria in insecticide residue degradation and to develop practical strategies for their implementation in real-world scenarios.

Current Insights into Sublethal Effects of Pesticides on Insects

The effect of pesticides on insects is often discussed in terms of acute and chronic toxicity, but an important and often overlooked aspect is the impact of sublethal doses on insect physiology and behavior. Pesticides can influence various physiological parameters of insects, including the innate immune system, development, and reproduction, through a combination of direct effects on specific exposed tissues and the modification of behaviors that contribute to health and reproductive success. Such behaviors include mobility, feeding, oviposition, navigation, and the ability to detect pheromones. Pesticides also have a profound effect on insect learning and memory. The precise effects depend on many different factors, including the insect species, age, sex, caste, physiological condition, as well as the type and concentration of the active ingredients and the exposure route. More studies are needed to assess the effects of different active ingredients (and combinations thereof) on a wider range of species to understand how sublethal doses of pesticides can contribute to insect decline. This review reflects our current knowledge about sublethal effects of pesticides on insects and advancements in the development of innovative methods to detect them.

Smart and Sustainable Crop Protection: Design and Evaluation of a Novel α-Amylase-Responsive Nanopesticide for Effective Pest Control

In this study, an α-amylase-responsive controlled-release formulation was developed by capping polydopamine onto β-cyclodextrin-modified abamectin-loaded hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles. The prepared Aba@HMS@CD@PDA were subjected to characterization using various analytical techniques. The findings revealed that Aba@HMS@CD@PDA, featuring a loading rate of 18.8 wt %, displayed noteworthy release behavior of abamectin in the presence of α-amylase. In comparison to abamectin EC, Aba@HMS@CD@PDA displayed a significantly foliar affinity and improved rainfastness on lotus leaves. The results of field trail demonstrated a significantly higher control efficacy against Spodoptera litura Fabricius compared to abamectin EC at all concentrations after 7, 14, and 21 days of spaying, showcasing the remarkable persistence of Aba@HMS@CD@PDA. These results underscore the potential of Aba@HMS@CD@PDA as a novel and persistently effective strategy for sustainable on-demand crop protection. The application of nanopesticides can enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of pesticide utilization, contributing to more sustainable agricultural practices.

Agriculture and environmental management through nanotechnology: Eco-friendly nanomaterial synthesis for soil-plant systems, food safety, and sustainability

Copper-based nanomaterials: Opportunities for sustainable agriculture

The exponential growth of the global population has resulted in a significant surge in the demand for food worldwide. Additionally, the impact of climate change has exacerbated crop losses caused by pests and pathogens. The transportation and utilization of traditional agrochemicals in the soil are highly inefficient, resulting in significant environmental losses and causing severe pollution of both the soil and aquatic ecosystems. Nanotechnology is an emerging field with significant potential for market applications. Among metal-based nanomaterials, copper-based nanomaterials have demonstrated remarkable potential in agriculture, which are anticipated to offer a promising alternative approach for enhancing crop yields and managing diseases, among other benefits. This review firstly performed co-occurrence and clustering analyses of previous studies on copper-based nanomaterials used in agriculture. Then a comprehensive review of the applications of copper-based nanomaterials in agricultural production was summarized. These applications primarily involved in nano-fertilizers, nano-regulators, nano-stimulants, and nano-pesticides for enhancing crop yields, improving crop resistance, promoting crop seed germination, and controlling crop diseases. Besides, the paper concluded the potential impact of copper-based nanomaterials on the soil micro-environment, including soil physicochemical properties, enzyme activities, and microbial communities. Additionally, the potential mechanisms were proposed underlying the interactions between copper-based nanomaterials, pathogenic microorganisms, and crops. Furthermore, the review summarized the factors affecting the application of copper-based nanomaterials, and highlighted the advantages and limitations of employing copper-based nanomaterials in agriculture. Finally, insights into the future research directions of nano-agriculture were put forward. The purpose of this review is to encourage more researches and applications of copper-based nanomaterials in agriculture, offering a novel and sustainable strategy for agricultural development.

Discovering allatostatin type-C receptor specific agonists

Currently, there is no pesticide available for the selective control of the pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa-specific), and conventional methods typically rely on mechanical techniques such as pheromone traps or broad-spectrum larvicidal chemicals. As climate change increases the range and dispersion capacity of crop and forest pests, outbreaks of the pine processionary occur with greater frequency and significantly impact forestry and public health. Our study is carried out to provide a T. pityocampa-specific pesticide targeting the Allatostatin Type-C Receptor (AlstR-C). We use a combination of computational biology methods, a cell-based screening assay, and in vivo toxicity and side effect assays to identify, for the first time, a series of AlstR-C ligands suitable for use as T. pityocampa-specific insecticides. We further demonstrate that the novel AlstR-C targeted agonists are specific to lepidopteran larvae, with no harmful effects on coleopteran larvae or adults. Overall, our study represents an important initial advance toward an insect GPCR-targeted next-generation pesticide design. Our approach may apply to other invertebrate GPCRs involved in vital metabolic pathways.

A risk entropy approach for linking pesticides and soil bacterial communities

Pesticides play a vital role in ensuring modern agricultural production, but also adversely affecting soil health. Microorganisms are the cornerstone of soil ecology, however, to date, there are few unified standards to measure the risk of soil pesticide residues to soil microbial community. To compensate for this gap, we collected soil samples from 55 orchards and monitored and risk-assessed 165 pesticides to microbial community in the soil. Results showed that a total of 137 pesticides were detected in all samples. Pesticide residues significantly influenced the microbial diversity and community structure in orchard soils, particularly fungicides and herbicides. The risk entropy of each pesticide was calculated in all samples and it was found that 60% of the samples had a "pesticide risk" (Risk quotient > 0.01), where the relative abundance significantly increased in 43 genera and significantly decreased in 111 genera (p < 0.05). Through multiple screens, we finally identified Bacillus and Sphingomonas as the most abundant sensitive genera under pesticide perturbation. The results showed that despite the complexity of the effects of pesticide residues on soils health, we could reveal them by identifying changes in soil bacterial, especially by the differences of microbial biomarkers abundance. The present study could provide new insights into the research strategy for pesticide pollution on soil microbial communities. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATION: The risk of pesticide residues in soil needs to be quantified and standardized. We believe that microorganisms can be used as a marker to indicate soil pesticide residue risk. For this end, we investigated the residues of 165 pesticides in 55 orchard soil samples, calculated pesticide risk entropy and their effects on the soil microbial community. Through multiple analyzing and screening, we ultimately identified that, out of the 154 detected biomarkers, Bacillus and Sphingomonas were the most abundant sensitive genera under pesticide perturbation, which have the potential to be used as key biomarkers of soil microbiomes induced by pesticide perturbation.

Analyzing the impact of pesticides on the indus river: contamination levels in water, sediment, fish, and associated human health risks

Pesticides are frequently used to protect crop yields and manage malaria vectors; however, their inadvertent transport into aquatic habitats poses a significant concern. Various anthropogenic activities influence the Indus River in Pakistan. This study aimed to assess the presence of eight pesticide residues at three different sites (Kalabagh, Kundian, and Chashma) in water, sediment, and the fish species (Labeo rohita) during both dry and wet seasons to measure the intensity of this pressure. Pesticide analysis was carried out using gas chromatography equipped with an electron capture detector. The results revealed the highest concentrations of pesticides during both dry and wet seasons at all sites, measuring 0.83 and 0.62 μg/l (water), 12.37 and 9.20 μg/g/dw (sediment), and 14.27 and 11.29 μg/g/ww (L. rohita), respectively. Overall, pesticide concentrations were higher in the dry season than in the wet season across all study sites. Based on detection frequency and concentration in both seasons at all sites, dominant pesticides included cypermethrin and carbofuran (in water), as well as endosulfan and cypermethrin (in sediment and fish tissue). Levels of endosulfan and cypermethrin exceeded standard limits. Moreover, principal component analysis (PCA) indicated no correlation among pesticides in fish tissue, sediment, and water. However, pesticides exhibited different behavior in different seasons. Furthermore, endosulfan and triazophos impose great human health risk, as indicated by the THQ value (> 1). The overall HI value was greater for site 1 in the dry season (8.378). The study concluded that the presence of agricultural pesticides in the Indus River poses a risk to aquatic life and has the potential to disrupt the entire food chain. This highlights the importance of sustainable practices for the study area and Pakistan overall agricultural and environmental sustainability. It is further recommended to strengthen regulations for reduced pesticide use and promote eco-friendly pest management.

Social foraging and the associated benefits of group-living in Cliff Swallows decrease over 40 years

Animals that feed socially can sometimes better locate prey, often by transferring information about food that is patchy, dense, and temporally and spatially unpredictable. Information transfer is a potential benefit of living in breeding colonies where unsuccessful foragers can more readily locate successful ones and thereby improve feeding efficiency. Most studies on social foraging have been short-term, and how long-term environmental change affects both foraging strategies and the associated benefits of coloniality is generally unknown. In the colonial Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota), we examined how social foraging, information transfer, and feeding ecology changed over a 40-year period in western Nebraska. Relative to the 1980's, Cliff Swallows in 2016-2022 were more likely to forage solitarily or in smaller groups, spent less time foraging, were more successful as solitaries, fed in more variable locations, and engaged less in information transfer at the colony site. The total mass of insects brought back to nestlings per parental visit declined over the study. The diversity of insect families captured increased over time, and some insect taxa dropped out of the diet, although the three most common insect families remained the same among the decades. Nestling Cliff Swallow body mass at 10 days of age and the number of nestlings surviving per nest declined more sharply with colony size in 2015-2022 than in 1984-1991 at sites where the confounding effects of ectoparasites were removed. Adult body mass during provisioning of nestlings was lower in more recent years, but the change did not vary with colony size. The reason(s) for the reduction in social foraging and information transfer over time are unclear, but the consequence is that colonial nesting may no longer offer the same fitness advantages for Cliff Swallows as in the 1980's. The results illustrate flexibility of foraging behavior and dynamic shifts in the potential selective pressures for group-living.

Chitosan nanocomposites as a nano-bio tool in phytopathogen control

Chitosan, an economically viable and versatile biopolymer, exhibits a wide array of advantageous physicochemical and biological properties. Chitosan nanocomposites, formed by the amalgamation of chitosan or chitosan nanoparticles with other nanoparticles or materials, have garnered extensive attention across agricultural, pharmaceutical, and biomedical domains. These nanocomposites have been rigorously investigated due to their diverse applications, notably in combatting plant pathogens. Their remarkable efficacy against phytopathogens has positioned them as a promising alternative to conventional chemical-based methods in phytopathogen control, thus exploring interest in sustainable agricultural practices with reduced reliance on chemical interventions. This review aims to highlight the anti-phytopathogenic activity of chitosan nanocomposites, emphasizing their potential in mitigating plant diseases. Additionally, it explores various synthesis methods for chitosan nanoparticles to enhance readers' understanding. Furthermore, the analysis delves into elucidating the intricate mechanisms governing the antimicrobial effectiveness of these composites against bacterial and fungal phytopathogens.

Quantitative determination of residue amounts of pesticide active ingredients used in grapes by LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS devices and evaluation of these pesticides in terms of public health

The aim of this study was to quantitatively determine pesticide residues in grapes, one of the most produced and consumed fruits in Turkey and in the world. A total of 226 active ingredients were analyzed in 21 samples collected from Southeastern and Eastern Anatolia regions using QuEChERS (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) extraction method and multiple residue analysis technique and LC-MS/MS and GC-MS/MS devices. In 11 out of 21 samples (52.4%), no active ingredient was detected, while at least one active ingredient was detected in 10 samples (47.6%). Thirteen different active substances (Ametoctradin, Azoxystrobin, Boscalid, Diphenoconazole, Dimethomorph, Fenhexamid, Fluopyram, Flutriafol, Metalaxyl- Metalaxyl-M, Metrafenone, Tebuconazole, Trifloxystrobin) were detected in the samples. The top 3 most detected active substances were Boscalid-Azoxystrobin and Fluopyram, respectively. The active ingredients were found between 0.015 and 0.499 mg kğ-1 values.

Factors affecting safe pesticide-use behaviors among farm plant agriculturists in northeastern Thailand

BACKGROUND

Pesticide poisoning is a major public health problem in Thailand and is the result of intensive inappropriate and unsafe use of pesticides. This analytical cross-sectional study aimed to determine the factors affecting safe pesticide-use behaviors among farm plant agriculturists in northeastern Thailand.

METHODS

The study sample included 427 farm plant agriculturists in Loei Province, northeastern Thailand. Individuals were randomly selected by a multistage random sampling technique. The following data were collected via a self-administered questionnaire consisting of 8 parts: (1) sociodemographic characteristics, (2) knowledge about pesticide use, (3) perceived severity of impact from pesticide use among farm plant agriculturists, (4) perceived susceptibility to pesticide use, (5) perceived self-efficacy in the modification of safe pesticide-use behaviors, (6) perceived outcome of the modification of safe pesticide-use behaviors, (7) social support, and (8) safe pesticide-use behaviors. Frequencies, percentages, means, standard deviations, and multiple regression analyses were employed for data analysis.

RESULTS

The majority of participants (79.4%) had high scores for safe pesticide-use behaviors among farm plant agriculturists (scores of 112-150). Factors that significantly affected safe pesticide-use behaviors included knowledge about pesticide use (β = 0.282), social support (β = 0.217), reading information from pesticide labels before pesticide use (β = 0.207), perceived self-efficacy (β = 0.186), female sex (β = -0.140), rice farmer status (β = 0.129), corn farmer status (β = 0.127), perceived susceptibility (β = 0.126), having received information from the internet (β = -0.124), and perceived severity (β = -0.098). Together, these 10 factors were found to explain 32.5% of the safe pesticide-use behaviors among farm plant agriculturists.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings indicate that there is a need to increase the number of promotional activities related to the safe use of pesticides through social support and training, with the aim of increasing the overall level of knowledge, perceived self-efficacy, perceived susceptibility, and modification of the perceived impact severity of pesticide use. Thus, relevant agencies should promote and support the safe use of pesticides by farm plant agriculturists. This study revealed that the factors affecting safe pesticide-use behaviors among farm plant agriculturists included knowledge about pesticide use, social support, reading pesticide container labels, perceived self-efficacy in the modification of pesticide-use behaviors, sex, rice farmer status, corn farmer status, perceived susceptibility to pesticide use, having received information from the internet, and perceived severity of impact from pesticide use.

Design superhydrophobic no-noble metal substrates for highly sensitive and signal stable SERS sensing

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is an analytical technique with a broad range of potential applications in fields such as biomedicine, electrochemistry, and hazardous chemicals. However, it is challenging to develop SERS substrates that are both good sensitive and signal stable. Here we designed a superhydrophobic Nd doped MoS2 uniformly assembled on the activated carbon fiber cloth (CFC) to avoid the coffee ring effect and enrich the analyte, improving the enhancement factor (EF) to 3.9 × 109 and pesticide endosulfan (<10-10) analyte detection. We demonstrate our strategy by density-functional theory (DFT) calculations confirming that both adsorption energy and density of states are enhanced after doping Nd leading to SERS enhancement. Beside DFT calculations, our experiments also provide an effective means to demonstrate that the high SERS sensitivity is based on multiple charge transfer processes combined with the activated carbon cloth. Our results address the limitations of low sensitivity and limit of detection (LOD) of semiconductor SERS substrates for trace analysis and are a step towards practical applications.

Comparative Transcriptomic Analysis Revealing the Potential Mechanisms of Erythritol-Caused Mortality and Oviposition Inhibition in Drosophila melanogaster

Erythritol has shown excellent insecticidal performance against a wide range of insect species, but the molecular mechanism by which it causes insect mortality and sterility is not fully understood. The mortality and sterility of Drosophila melanogaster were assessed after feeding with 1M erythritol for 72 h and 96 h, and gene expression profiles were further compared through RNA sequencing. Enrichment analysis of GO and KEGG revealed that expressions of the adipokinetic hormone gene (Akh), amylase gene (Amyrel), α-glucosidase gene (Mal-B1/2, Mal-A1-4, Mal-A7/8), and triglyceride lipase gene (Bmm) were significantly up-regulated, while insulin-like peptide genes (Dilp2, Dilp3 and Dilp5) were dramatically down-regulated. Seventeen genes associated with eggshell assembly, including Dec-1 (down 315-fold), Vm26Ab (down 2014-fold) and Vm34Ca (down 6034-fold), were significantly down-regulated or even showed no expression. However, there were no significant differences in the expression of three diuretic hormone genes (DH44, DH31, CAPA) and eight aquaporin genes (Drip, Big brain, AQP, Eglp1, Eglp2, Eglp3, Eglp4 and Prip) involved in osmolality regulation (all p value > 0.05). We concluded that erythritol, a competitive inhibitor of α-glucosidase, severely reduced substrates and enzyme binding, inhibiting effective carbohydrate hydrolysis in the midgut and eventually causing death due to energy deprivation. It was clear that Drosophila melanogaster did not die from the osmolality of the hemolymph. Our findings elucidate the molecular mechanism underlying the mortality and sterility in Drosophila melanogaster induced by erythritol feeding. It also provides an important theoretical basis for the application of erythritol as an environmentally friendly pesticide.

Risk assessment of airborne agricultural pesticide exposure in humans in rural China

Continuous exposure to airborne pesticides causes their gradual accumulation in the human body, eventually posing a threat to human health. To the best of our knowledge, risk assessment study of pesticide non-occupational exposure to residents in agricultural areas has not been conducted in China. In this study, air samples (gas and dust) were collected from inside and outside residences of seven households and an area near the field in a grain-growing area (wheat and maize rotation) for eight months, and the pesticides present were examined both qualitatively and quantitatively. Using a 95% confidence interval, 9 out of 16 pesticides were detected, namely acetamiprid, acetochlor, atrazine, flucarbazone-sodium, imidacloprid, methyldisulfuron-methyl, nicosulfuron-methyl, pendimethalin, and beta-cyhalothrin, and their safety was subsequently evaluated. The results showed that the inhalation exposure of households to beta-cyhalothrin exceeded the acceptable range in the first residential, and the excess lifetime cancer risk of acetochlor inhalation exposure in six households and area around the field exceeds 1E-6, which highlights the need to strengthen preventive screening for cancer risk.

Perception of the Biocontrol Potential and Palmitic Acid Biosynthesis Pathway of Bacillus subtilis H2 through Merging Genome Mining with Chemical Analysis

Bacillus has been widely studied for its potential to protect plants from pathogens. Here, we report the whole genome sequence of Bacillus subtilis H2, which was isolated from the tea garden soil of Guiyang Forest Park. Strain H2 showed a broad spectrum of antagonistic activities against many plant fungal pathogens and bacteria pathogens, including the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, and showed a good field control effect against rice blast. The complete genome of B. subtilis H2 contained a 4,160,635-bp circular chromosome, with an average G + C content of 43.78%. Through the genome mining of strain H2, we identified 7 known antimicrobial compound biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs) including sporulation killing factor, surfactin, bacillaene, fengycin, bacillibactin, subtilosin A, and bacilysin. Palmitic acid (PA), a secondary metabolite, was detected and identified in the H2 strain through genome mining analysis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Additionally, we propose, for the first time, that the type II fatty acid synthesis (FAS) pathway in Bacillus is responsible for PA biosynthesis. This finding was confirmed by studying the antimicrobial activity of PA and conducting reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) experiments. We also identified numerous genes associated with plant-bacteria interactions in the H2 genome, including more than 94 colonization-related genes, more than 34 antimicrobial genes, and more than 13 plant growth-promoting genes. These findings contribute to our understanding of the biocontrol mechanisms of B. subtilis H2 and have potential applications in crop disease control.

The inappropriate application of imidacloprid destroys the ability of predatory natural enemies to control pests in the food chain: A case study of the feeding behavior of Orius similis on Frankliniella occidentalis

Insecticides are an indispensable and important tool for agricultural production. However, the inappropriate application of insecticides can cause damage to the food chain and ecosystem. Orius similis is an important predatory and natural enemy of Frankliniella occidentalis. Imidacloprid is widely used to control pests, but will inevitably exert adverse effects on O. similis. In order to determine the effect of different imidacloprid treatments on the ability of O. similis to prey on the 2nd-instar nymphs of F. occidentalis, we determined the toxicity and predation of imidacloprid on different stages of O. similis under contact and ingestion treatments. In addition, we used the Holling disc equation to evaluate the ability of O. similis to search and exhibit predatory activity following contact and ingestion treatments. Analysis showed that the highest LC10 and LC20 values for imidacloprid contact and ingestion toxicity treatment were 17.06 mg/L and 23.74 mg/L, respectively. Both imidacloprid treatments led toa reduction in the predatory of O. similis on prey. The functional responses of the 3rd to 5th instar nymphs, along with female and male O. similis adults to the 2nd-instar nymphs of F. occidentalis were consistent with the Holling type II response following contact and ingestion with imidacloprid. However, following imidacloprid treatment, the handing time (Th) of O. similis with single F. occidentalis was prolonged and the instantaneous attack rate (a) was reduced after imidacloprid treatment. The predatory capacity (a/Th) of female O. similis adults when treated with the LC10 concentration of imidacloprid by ingestion was 52.85; this was lower than that of the LC10 concentration of imidacloprid in the contact treatment (57.67). The extent of predation of O. similis on the 2nd-instar nymphs of F. occidentalis was positively correlated with prey density, although the search effect was negatively correlated with prey density. The most extensive search effect was exhibited by adult O. similis females. Simulations with the Hessell-Varley interference model showed that an increase in the number of O. similis would reduce search efficiency regardless of whether they were treated with imidacloprid or not. Thus, O. similis, especially female adults, exhibited strong potential for controlling the 2nd-instar nymphs of F. occidentalis. The toxicity of ingestion following treatment with the same concentration of imidacloprid in O. similis was greater than that of contact treatment. When using O. similis to control F. occidentalis in the field, we should increase the number of female adults released, and prolong the interval between imidacloprid treatment and O. similis exposure. This strategy will improve the control ability of O. similis, coordinate both chemical and biological control, reduce the impact of pesticides on the environment, and improve the efficiency of agricultural production.

Novel protective aspects of dietary polyphenols against pesticidal toxicity and its prospective application in rice-fish mode: A Review

The rice fish system represents an innovative and sustainable approach to integrated farming, combining rice cultivation with fish rearing in the same ecosystem. However, one of the major challenges in this system is the pesticidal pollution resulting from various sources, which poses risks to fish health and overall ecosystem balance. In recent years, dietary polyphenols have emerged as promising bioactive compounds with potential chemo-preventive and therapeutic properties. These polyphenols, derived from various plant sources, have shown great potential in reducing the toxicity of pesticides and improving the health of fish within the rice fish system. This review aims to explore the novel aspects of using dietary polyphenols to mitigate pesticidal toxicity and enhance fish health in the rice fish system. It provides comprehensive insights into the mechanisms of action of dietary polyphenols and their beneficial effects on fish health, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and detoxification properties. Furthermore, the review discusses the potential application methods of dietary polyphenols, such as direct supplementation in fish diets or through incorporation into the rice fields. By understanding the interplay between dietary polyphenols and pesticides in the rice fish system, researchers can develop innovative and sustainable strategies to promote fish health, minimize pesticide impacts, and ensure the long-term viability of this integrated farming approach. The information presented in this review will be valuable for scientists, aqua-culturists, and policymakers aiming to implement eco-friendly and health-enhancing practices in the rice fish system.

Probabilistic risk assessment of endocrine disrupting pesticides in Iran

The chronic dietary risk assessment for 34 pesticides suspected of acting as endocrine disrupters in Iran was assessed by comparing TMDI with the Acceptable Daily Intakes (ADI). Of 34 investigated endocrine-disrupting pesticides (EDPs), 6 had TMDI > ADI. In addition, potential non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risk assessments were evaluated using Monte Carlo simulation. HQ in wheat was 17.40 and 20.29 in adults and children, respectively. Due to dimethoate residue in wheat, HQ was 2.78, and for fenitrothion residue, 3.22. HI was 21.22 for adults and 24.76 for children in wheat, more than 1. Total Carcinogenic risk (TCR) due to EDPs residues was 6.40 × 10-5 in apples, in citrus fruits 5.97 × 10-5, 3.33 × 10-5 in cucumber, 5.30 × 10-5 in lettuce, in potato was 2.36 × 10-5, in rice was 1.61 × 10-5, 1.78 × 10-5 in tomato, and due to epoxiconazole residues in wheat was 3.18 × 10-5, more than acceptable limit 1.0 × 10-6. Pore engineering of micro/mesoporous nanomaterials for encapsulation, controlled release and variegated applications of essential oils

Essential oils have become increasingly popular in fields of medical, food and agriculture, owing to their strongly antimicrobial, anti-inflammation and antioxidant effects, greatly meeting demand from consumers for healthy and safe natural products. However, the easy volatility and/or chemical instability of active ingredients of essential oils (EAIs) can result in the loss of activity before realizing their functions, which have greatly hindered the widely applications of EAIs. As an emerging trend, micro/mesoporous nanomaterials (MNs) have drawn great attention for encapsulation and controlled release of EAIs, owing to their tunable pore structural characteristics. In this review, we briefly discuss the recent advances of MNs that widely used in the controlled release of EAIs, including zeolites, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), mesoporous silica nanomaterials (MSNs), and provide a comprehensive summary focusing on the pore engineering strategies of MNs that affect their controlled-release or triggered-release for EAIs, including tailorable pore structure properties (e.g., pore size, pore surface area, pore volume, pore geometry, and framework compositions) and surface properties (surface modification and surface functionalization). Finally, the variegated applications and potential challenges are also given for MNs based delivery strategies for EAIs in the fields of healthcare, food and agriculture. These will provide considerable instructions for the rational design of MNs for controlled release of EAIs.
