Accelerated atrazine degradation and altered metabolic pathways in goat manure assisted soil bioremediation

Long-term vinasse application enhanced the initial dissipation of atrazine and ametryn in a sugarcane field in Tucumán, Argentina

The production of sugarcane bioethanol generates large volumes of vinasse, an effluent whose final disposal can produce an environmental impact that is of concern. The long-term disposal of vinasse in sugarcane fields could challenge crop management, such as the performance of traditional herbicides, by changing soil properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of long-term vinasse application on the field and the dissipation of atrazine and ametryn herbicides in a subtropical sugarcane agroecosystem, and to discuss the potential processes involved in it. Vinasse affected soil properties by increasing pH (12%), electrical conductivity (160%), and soil organic carbon (25%) at 0-10 cm depth of soil. Differences in the herbicide calculated sorption coefficient (Kd) varied according to the pedotransfer function applied and the herbicide type (atrazine or ametryn). During the first seven days after herbicide application, the soil underwent long-term vinasse application and increased atrazine and ametryn dissipation 45% and 33%, respectively, compared with the conventional fertilization scheme (control). The Pesticide Root Zone Model revealed that dissipation was mediated mainly by the degradation process rather than transport or other processes. The long-term application of vinasse in a typical sugarcane field of Tucumán, Argentina decreased the potential groundwater pollution of triazines and, adversely, reduced their bioavailability for weed control. For this, the present study presents original information about how long-term treatment with vinasse may require an adaptation of conventional management practices such as the application of herbicides in Argentina and other sugarcane-producing regions. Advances in understanding and mitigating Atrazine's environmental and health impact: A comprehensive review

Atrazine is a widely used herbicide in agriculture, and it has garnered significant attention because of its potential risks to the environment and human health. The extensive utilization of atrazine, alongside its persistence in water and soil, underscores the critical need to develop safe and efficient removal strategies. This comprehensive review aims to spotlight atrazine's potential impact on ecosystems and public health, particularly its enduring presence in soil, water, and plants. As a known toxic endocrine disruptor, atrazine poses environmental and health risks. The review navigates through innovative removal techniques across soil and water environments, elucidating microbial degradation, phytoremediation, and advanced methodologies such as electrokinetic-assisted phytoremediation (EKPR) and photocatalysis. The review notably emphasizes the complex process of atrazine degradation and ongoing scientific efforts to address this, recognizing its potential risks to both the environment and human health.

Degradation of atrazine, glyphosate, and 2,4-D in soils collected from two contrasting crop rotations in Southwest Chaco, Argentina

Argentina stands as one of the leading consumers of herbicides. In a laboratory incubation experiment, the persistence and production of degradation metabolites of Atrazine, 2,4-D, and Glyphosate were investigated in a loamy clay soil under two contrasting agricultural practices: continuous soybean cultivation (T1) and intensified rotations with grasses and legumes (T2). The soils were collected from a long-term no-till trial replicating the influence of the meteorological conditions in the productive region. The soil was enriched with diluted concentrations of 6.71, 9.95, and 24 mg a.i./kg-1 of soil for the respective herbicides, equivalent to annual doses commonly used in the productive region. Samples were taken at intervals of 0, 0.5, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 16, 32, and 64 days, and analysis was conducted using high-resolution liquid chromatography UPLC MS/MS. An optimal fit to the first-order kinetic model was observed for each herbicide in both rotations, resulting in relatively short half-lives. Intensified crop sequences favored the production of biotic degradation metabolites. The impact of the high frequency of soybean cultivation revealed a trend of soil acidification and a reduced biological contribution to attenuation processes in soil contamination.

"Structural responses of non-targeted bacterial and hppd communities to the herbicide tembotrione in soil"

Tembotrione (TBT) is a β-triketone herbicide targeting the 4-Hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase enzyme (4-HPPD) of weeds. This molecule can also affect soil microorganisms, either through both direct and indirect toxic effects for microorganisms expressing 4-HPPD, or by promoting tolerant and/or degrading microbial populations. Our study aimed to characterize the impacts of TBT on the diversity of total- and hppd (coding for 4-HPPD) -soil bacterial communities. Soil microcosms were treated with the active ingredient TBT at the recommended field dose (100 g a.i/ha; D1) or the tenfold dose (D10). Soil samples were collected from 0 to 55 days post-treatment to study: (i) total- and hppd-bacterial diversities using 16SrRNA and hppd amplicons sequencing, respectively; (ii) TBT dissipation in soil. Both total- and hppd-bacterial community composition was not affected by TBT treatments (D1 and D10). However, D10 treatment slightly increased richness and phylogenetic diversity of the total bacterial community while decreasing hppd richness. Overall, the highest dose of TBT seemed to promote TBT-tolerant or TBT-degrading bacterial populations and to deplete TBT-sensitive ones. These effects were transient as TBT was rapidly dissipated with a DT50 of 7 days and 15 days for D1 and D10, respectively. Differential abundance analysis with a Generalized Linear Model allowed the identification of Sphingomonas, Steroidobacter and Lysobacter as genus that were influenced by TBT, and which could be used as a new class of exposure biomarkers.

Atrazine decontamination by a newly screened psychrotroph Paenarthrobacter sp. KN0901 in an aquatic system: Metabolic pathway, kinetics, and hydroponics experiment

Atrazine residues running off the fields and entering water resources are a major threat to food security and the ecosystem. In this study, a psychrotrophic functional strain named KN0901 to remove atrazine residues was screened. KN0901 could degrade 30 mg·L^-1 atrazine in 4 days at 15ºC with 10⁵ CFU·mL^-1 incubation. The phylogenetic results showed KN0901 belonged to Paenarthrobacter sp. PCR results showed that the functional genes consist of trzN, atzB, and atzC, suggesting atrazine was transformed to cyanuric acid by KN0901. KN0901 could degrade atrazine without adding exogenous carbon and nitrogen sources. What's more, KN0901 could tolerate extreme low temperature (5ºC) and high atrazine concentration (100 mg·L^-1). When growth and degradation curves were compared, the results indicated the length of lag time showed significant correlation to atrazine degradation rate. The hydroponic experiments showed that the toxicity of atrazine was significantly reduced with KN0901 treatment. The study provided an effective, economic, and eco-friendly bioremediation measure to address atrazine contamination.

Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) degradation and microbial community change in mangrove rhizosphere gradients

Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) is a widespread persistent organic pollutant in the environment. As an ultimate barrier preventing pollutant entry into the ocean, mangrove plays an important role in coastal ecosystem. However, little information is known about DEHP degradation in mangrove rhizosphere. In this study, a rhizobox was used to separate four consecutive rhizosphere compartments with distance of 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, and > 6 mm to the rhizoplane of Kandelia obovata and investigate DEHP gradient degradation behavior in rhizosphere. Sediments closer to the rhizoplane exhibited higher DEHP degradation efficiencies (74.4 % in 0-2 mm layer). More precisely, mangrove rhizosphere promoted the benzoic acid pathway and non-selectively accelerated the production of mono(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, phthalic acid and benzoic acid. Higher sediment organic matter content, lower pH and less humus in rhizosphere benefited DEHP hydrolysis. In addition, rhizosphere significantly increased microbial biomass and activities comparing to bulk sediments. Some bacterial lineages with potential DEHP degradation capability exhibited a distance-dependent pattern that decreased with the distance to the rhizoplane, including Bacillales, Acidothermaceae, Gammaproteobacteria, and Sphingobacteriales. Our findings suggested that mangrove rhizosphere could accelerate DEHP degradation by altering sediment physicochemical properties and microbial composition, showing positive effects on coastal ecosystem services for eliminating phthalate acid ester contamination.

Enhanced phytoremediation of atrazine-contaminated soil by vetiver (Chrysopogon zizanioides L.) and associated bacteria

The intensive and long-term use of atrazine (ATZ) has led to the contamination of agricultural soils and non-target organisms, posing a series of threats to human health through the transmission of the food chain. In this study, a 60-day greenhouse pot experiment was carried out to explore the phytoremediation by Chrysopogon zizanioides L. (vetiver). The uptake, accumulation, distribution, and removal of ATZ were investigated, and the degradation mechanisms were elucidated. The results showed that the growth of vetiver was inhibited in the first 10 days of the incubation; subsequently, the plant recovered rapidly with time going. Vetiver grass was capable of taking up ATZ from the soil, with root concentration factor ranging from 2.36 to 15.55, and translocating to the shoots, with shoot concentration factor ranging from 7.51 to 17.52. The dissipation of ATZ in the rhizosphere soil (97.51%) was significantly higher than that in the vetiver-unplanted soil (85.14%) at day 60. Metabolites were identified as hydroxyatrazine (HA), deethylatrazine (DEA), deisopropylatrazine (DIA), and didealkylatrazine (DDA) in the samples of the shoots and roots of vetiver as well as the soils treated with ATZ. HA, DEA, DIA, and DDA were reported first time as metabolites of ATZ in shoots and roots of vetiver grown in soil. The presence of vetiver changed the formation and distribution of the dealkylated products in the rhizosphere soil, which remarkably enhanced the occurrence of DEA, DIA, and DDA. Arthrobacter, Bradyrhizobium, Nocardioides, and Rhodococcus were the major atrazine-degrading bacterial genera, which might be responsible for ATZ degradation in the rhizosphere soil. Our findings suggested that vetiver grass can significantly promote ATZ degradation in the soil, and it could be a strategy for remediation of the atrazine-contaminated agricultural soil.

Comparative study of bacterial community dynamics in different soils following application of the herbicide atrazine

Microbial communities in cultivated soils control the fate of pollutants associated with agricultural practice. The present study was designed to explore the response of bacterial communities to the application of the widely-used herbicide atrazine in three different crop fields that differ significantly in their physicochemical structure and nutritional content: the nutrient-rich (with relatively high carbon and nitrogen content) Newe Yaar (NY) and Ha-Ogen (HO) soils and the nutrient-poor, sandy Sde-Eliyahu (SE) soil. The 16 S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing revealed the nutrient poor HO soil differs in its response to atrazine in comparison to the two nutrient-rich soils both in the shortest persistence of atrazine and its effect on community structure and composition. Potential reported bacterial degraders of atrazine such as Pseudomonas, Clostridium and Bacillus were more abundant in contaminated sandy/poor soils (HO) whereas bacteria known for nitrogen cycling such as Azospirillum, Sinorhizobium, Nitrospira and Azohydromonas were significantly more abundant in the nutrient rich contaminated SE soils. No significant increase of potential indigenous degrader Arthrobacter was detected in SE and NY soils whereas a significant increase was recorded with HO soils. An overall shift in bacterial community composition following atrazine application was observed only in the nutrient poor soil. Understanding atrazine persistence and microbiome response to its application of in dependence with soil types serve the design of precision application strategies.

Performance and mechanisms of biochar-assisted vermicomposting in accelerating di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate biodegradation in farmland soil

Biochar and earthworms can accelerate di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) degradation in soils. However, little is known regarding the effect of biochar-assisted vermicomposting on soil DEHP degradation and the underlying mechanisms. Therefore, the present study investigated DEHP degradation performance and bacterial community changes in farmland soils using earthworms, biochar, or their combination. Biochar-assisted vermicomposting significantly improved DEHP degradation through initial physical adsorption on biochar and subsequent rapid biodegradation in the soil, earthworm gut, and charosphere. Burkholderiaceae, Pseudomonadaceae, and Flavobacteriaceae were the potential DEHP degraders and were enriched in biochar-assisted vermicomposting. In particularly, Burkholderiaceae and Sphingomonadaceae were enriched in the earthworm gut and charosphere, possibly explaining the mechanism of accelerated DEHP degradation in biochar-assisted vermicomposting. Soil pH, soil organic matter, and humus (humic acid, fulvic acid, and humin) increased by earthworms or biochar enhanced DEHP degradation. These findings imply that biochar-assisted vermicomposting enhances DEHP removal not only through rapid physical sorption but also through the improvement of soil physicochemical characteristics and promotion of degraders in the soil, earthworm gut, and charosphere. Overall, biochar-assisted vermicomposting is a suitable method for the remediation of organic-contaminated farmland soils.

Rapid biodegradation of atrazine by a novel Paenarthrobacter ureafaciens ZY and its effects on soil native microbial community dynamic

An atrazine-utilizing bacterium, designated as ZY, was isolated from agricultural soil and identified as Paenarthrobacter ureafaciens. The P. ureafaciens ZY demonstrated a significant degradation capacity of atrazine, with the degradation efficiency of 12.5 mg L^-1 h^-1 in liquid media (at pH 7, 30°C, and the atrazine level of 100 mg L^-1). The P. ureafaciens ZY contained three atrazine-degrading genes (i.e., trzN, atzB, and atzC) could metabolize atrazine to form cyanuric acid, which showed lower biotoxicity than the parent atrazine as predicted by Ecological Structure Activity Relationships model. A laboratory-scale pot experiment was performed to examine the degradation of atrazine by P. ureafaciens ZY inoculation and investigate its effects on the native microbial communities. The results exhibited that the P. ureafaciens ZY was conductive to the degradation of atrazine, increased the total soil phospholipid fatty acids at the atrazine level of 50, 70, and 100 mg kg^-1. By using high-throughput sequencing analysis, Frateuria, Dyella, Burkholderia-Caballeronia-Paraburkholderia were considered as the most important indigenous atrazine-degrading microorganisms due to their relative abundances were positively correlated with the atrazine degradation rate. In addition, P. ureafaciens ZY also increased the abundance of atrazine-degrading genus Streptomyces and Bacillus, indicating that there may be a synergic relationship between them in the process of atrazine degradation. Our work provides a new insight between inoculums and native microorganisms on the degradation of atrazine.

Effect of H3PO4-modified biochar on the fate of atrazine and remediation of bacterial community in atrazine-contaminated soil

The application of chemically modified biochar is a promising strategy for the remediation of contaminated (e.g., pesticides) soil. In this study, H₃PO₄ was used to modify peanut shell to improve the remediation performance of biochar. Surface area (980.19 m²/g), pore volume (0.12 cm³/g), and the functional groups (OH, CO, and phosphorus-containing groups) on the biochar were increased by H₃PO₄ treatment. The sorption experimental data were well fitted by Freundlich model, while the sorption affinity (K_f) of H₃PO₄ modified biochar (PBC) for atrazine was 128 times greater than that of the untreated biochar (BC) in the aquatic systems. The K_f values of PBC-amended soil to atrazine were increased by 13.57 times than that of single soil. The strong sorption of PBC on atrazine delayed the degradation of atrazine in soil, and the residual percentage of atrazine in soil and soil-PBC mixture were 4.90% and 71.44% at the end of 60-day incubation, with the degradation half-life increased from 13.3 to 121.6 d. The analysis of high-throughput sequencing results showed that atrazine reduced the diversity of soil microbial community, but the abundance of microorganisms with degradation function increased and became dominant species. The addition of PBC in soil accelerated the microbial remediation of atrazine stress, which may promote the soil nitrogen cycle. Therefore, amendment of atrazine contaminated soil with PBC can reduce the environmental risk of atrazine and benefit the soil microbial ecology.

Toxicological effects, environmental behaviors and remediation technologies of herbicide atrazine in soil and sediment: A comprehensive review

Atrazine has become one of the most popular applied triazine herbicides in the world due to its high herbicidal efficiency and low price. With its large-dosage and long-term use on a global scale, atrazine can cause widespread and persistent contamination of soil and sediment. This review systematically evaluates the toxicological effects, environmental risks, environmental behaviors (adsorption, transport and transformation, and bioaccumulation) of atrazine, and the remediation technologies of atrazine-contaminated soil and sediment. For the adsorption behavior of atrazine on soil and sediment, the organic matter content plays an extremely important role in the adsorption process. Various models and equations such as the multi-media fugacity model and solute transport model are used to analyze the migration and transformation process of atrazine in soil and sediment. It is worth noting that certain transformation products of atrazine in the environment even have stronger toxicity and mobility than its parent. Among various remediation technologies, the combination of microbial remediation and phytoremediation for atrazine-contaminated soil and sediment has wide application prospects. Although other remediation technologies such as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can also efficiently remove atrazine from soil, some potential problems still need to be further clarified. Finally, some related challenges and prospects are proposed.

Insight into the role of charge carrier mediation zone for singlet oxygen production over rod-shape graphitic carbon nitride: Batch and continuous-flow reactor

As a new approach of creating the photo-exited electron (e^-) and hole (h⁺) mediation zone for highly selective singlet oxygen (¹O₂) production, the rod-type graphitic carbon nitride (NCN) has been synthesized from the nitric acid-modified melamine followed by the calcination. The NCN exhibited a higher surface area and surface oxygen adsorption ability than bulk graphitic carbon nitride (BCN). The increment of CO and NH_x groups on NCN corresponded to e^- and h⁺ mediation groups, respectively, resulting in higher production of ¹O₂ than BCN. Moreover, those mediation groups on NCN result in higher recombination efficiency and longer e^- decay time. As a result, the optimized NCN-0.5 (derived from 0.5 M of nitric acid-modified melamine) displayed 5.8 times higher kinetic rate constant of atrazine (ATZ) removal under UVA-LED irradiation compared to BCN. This study also evaluated the ATZ degradation pathways and toxicity effect of by-products. In addition, continuous flow experiments using NCN-0.5 showed superior ATZ removal performance with a hybrid concept between a slurry photocatalysis and a continuous stirred tank reactor system using actual effluent obtained from a wastewater treatment plant. Thus, this work provides an insight into the strategy for highly selective ¹O₂ production and the potential for water purification application.
