Abstract
BACKGROUND Nanotechnology has been widely applied in agricultural science. During the process of reducing metal toxicity and accumulation in rice, nanomaterials exhibit size effects. However, there is limited knowledge regarding these size effects. We aim to explore the impact of fertilizer with various sizes of ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) on rice growth and cadmium (Cd) accumulation and to elucidate the potential mechanism of Cd reduction in rice. Foliar applications of different concentrations (0.5 and 2 mmol L-1) and different sizes (30 and 300 nm ZnO-NPs) of zinc (Zn) fertilizer (Zn(NO3)2) were performed to investigate the effects on rice growth, Cd accumulation and subcellular distribution, and the expression of Zn-Cd transport genes. RESULTS The results suggested that all the foliar sprayings can significantly reduce the Cd concentrations in rice grains by 41-61% with the highest reduction in the application of ZnO-NPs with large size and low concentration. This is related to the enhancement of Cd fixation in leaf cell walls and downregulation of Cd transport genes (OsZIP7, OsHMA2, OsHMA3) in stem nodes. Foliar ZnO-NPs applications can increase the Zn concentration in grains by 9-21%. Foliar applications of Zn(NO3)2 and small-sized ZnO-NPs promoted plant growth and rice yield, while the application of large-sized ZnO-NPs significantly reduced rice growth and yield. CONCLUSION The study suggests that the rice yield and Cd reduction are dependent on the size and concentration of foliar spraying and the use of large-sized ZnO-NPs is the most effective strategy when considering both yield and Cd reduction comprehensively. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Minimizing cadmium (Cd) contamination in rice grains is crucial for ensuring food security and promoting sustainable agriculture. Utilizing genetic modification to generate rice varieties with low Cd accumulation is a promising strategy due to its cost-effectiveness and operational simplicity. Our study demonstrated that the CRISPR-Cas9-mediated quadruple mutation of the multicopper oxidase genes OsLPR1/3/4/5 in the japonica rice cultivar Tongjing 981 had little effect on yields. However, a notable increase was observed in the cell wall functional groups that bind with Cd. As a result, the quadruple mutation of OsLPR1/3/4/5 enhanced Cd sequestration within the cell wall while reducing Cd concentrations in both xylem and phloem sap, thereby inhibiting Cd transport from roots to shoots. Consequently, Cd concentrations in brown rice and husk in oslpr1/3/4/5 quadruple mutants (qm) decreased by 52% and 55%, respectively, compared to the wild-type. These findings illustrate that the quadruple mutation of OsLPR1/3/4/5 is an effective method for minimizing Cd contamination in rice grains without compromising yields. Therefore, the quadruple mutation of OsLPR1/3/4/5 via biotechnological pathways may represent a valuable strategy for the generation of new rice varieties with low Cd accumulation.

Abstract
Plant growth is severely harmed by cadmium (Cd) contamination, while the addition of zinc (Zn) can reduce the toxic effects of Cd. However, the interaction between Cd and Zn on the molecular mechanism and cell wall of Cosmosbipinnatus is unclear. In this study, a transcriptome was constructed using RNA-sequencing. In C. bipinnatus root transcriptome data, the expression of 996, 2765, and 3023 unigenes were significantly affected by Cd, Zn, and Cd + Zn treatments, respectively, indicating different expression patterns of some metal transporters among the Cd, Zn, and Cd + Zn treatments. With the addition of Zn, the damage to the cell wall was reduced, both the proportion and content of polysaccharides in the cell wall were changed, and Cd accumulation was decreased by 32.34%. In addition, we found that Cd and Zn mainly accumulated in pectins, the content of which increased by 30.79% and 61.4% compared to the CK treatment. Thus, Zn could alleviate the toxicity of Cd to C. bipinnatus. This study revealed the interaction between Cd and Zn at the physiological and molecular levels, broadening our understanding of the mechanisms of tolerance to Cd and Zn stress in cosmos.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) has become an important heavy metal pollutant because of its strong migration and high toxicity. The industrial production process aggravated the Cd pollution in rice fields. Human exposure to Cd through rice can cause kidney damage, emphysema, and various cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, posing a grave threat to health. As modern technology develops, the Cd accumulation model in rice and in-situ remediation of Cd pollution in cornfields have been extensively studied and applied, so it is necessary to sort out and summarize them systematically. Therefore, this paper reviewed the primary in-situ methods for addressing heavy metal contamination in rice paddies, including chemical remediation (inorganic-organic fertilizer remediation, nanomaterials, and composite remediation), biological remediation (phytoremediation and microbial remediation), and crop management remediation technologies. The factors that affect Cd transformation in soil and Cd migration in crops, the advantages and disadvantages of remediation techniques, remediation mechanisms, and the long-term stability of remediation were discussed. The shortcomings and future research directions of in situ remediation strategies for heavily polluted paddy fields and genetic improvement strategies for low-cadmium rice varieties were critically proposed. To sum up, this review aims to enhance understanding and serve as a reference for the appropriate selection and advancement of remediation technologies for rice fields contaminated with heavy metals.

Abstract
Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) has been reported as a beneficial role in alleviating cadmium (Cd) toxicity in plant. However, underlying molecular mechanisms about SeNPs reducing Cd accumulation and alleviating Cd toxicity in wheat are not well understood. A hydroponic culture was performed to evaluate Cd and Se accumulation, cell wall components, oxidative stress and antioxidative system, and transcriptomic response of wheat seedlings after SeNPs addition under Cd stress. Results showed that SeNPs application notably reduced Cd concentration in root and in shoot by 56.9% and 37.3%, respectively. Additionally, SeNPs prompted Cd distribution in root cell wall by 54.7%, and increased lignin, pectin and hemicellulose contents by regulating cell wall biosynthesis and metabolism-related genes. Further, SeNPs alleviated oxidative stress caused by Cd in wheat through signal transduction pathways. We also observed that Cd addition reduced Se accumulation by downregulating the expression level of aquaporin 7. These results indicated that SeNPs alleviated Cd toxicity and reduced Cd accumulation in wheat, which were associated with the synergetic regulation of cell wall biosynthesis pathway, uptake transporters, and antioxidative system via signaling pathways.

Abstract
Heavy metal copper (Cu) will inevitably impact the marine macroalgae Gracilariopsis lemaneiformis (G. lemaneiformis), which is a culture of economic importance along China's coastline. In this study, the detoxification mechanism of Cu stress on G. lemaneiformis was revealed by assessing physiological indicators in conjunction with transcriptome and metabolome analyses at 1 d after Cu stress. Our findings revealed that 25 μM Cu stimulated ROS synthesis and led to the enzymatic oxidation of arachidonic acid residues. This process subsequently impeded G. lemaneiformis growth by suppressing photosynthesis, nitrogen metabolism, protein synthesis, etc. The entry of Cu ions into the algae was facilitated by ZIPs and IRT transporters, presenting as Cu2+. Furthermore, there was an up-regulation of Cu efflux transporters HMA5 and ABC family transporters to achieve compartmentation to mitigate the toxicity. The results revealed that G. lemaneiformis elevated the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase and ascorbate-glutathione cycle to maintain ROS homeostasis. Additionally, metabolites such as flavonoids, 3-O-methylgallic acid, 3-hydroxy-4-keto-gama-carotene, and eicosapentaenoic acid were up-regulated compared with the control, indicating that they might play roles in response to Cu stress. In summary, this study offers a comprehensive insight into the detoxification mechanisms driving the responses of G. lemaneiformis to Cu exposure.

Abstract
Regions affected by heavy metal contamination frequently encounter phosphorus (P) deficiency. Numerous studies highlight crucial role of P in facilitating cadmium (Cd) accumulation in woody plants. However, the regulatory mechanism by which P affects Cd accumulation in roots remains ambiguous. This study aims to investigate the effects of phosphorus (P) deficiency on Cd accumulation, Cd subcellular distribution, and cell wall components in the roots of Salix caprea under Cd stress. The results revealed that under P deficiency conditions, there was a 35.4% elevation in Cd content in roots, coupled with a 60.1% reduction in Cd content in shoots, compared to the P sufficiency conditions. Under deficient P conditions, the predominant response of roots to Cd exposure was the increased sequestration of Cd in root cell walls. The sequestration of Cd in root cell walls increased from 37.1% under sufficient P conditions to 66.7% under P deficiency, with pectin identified as the primary Cd binding site under both P conditions. Among cell wall components, P deficiency led to a significant 31.7% increase in Cd content within pectin compared to P sufficiency conditions, but did not change the pectin content. Notably, P deficiency significantly increased pectin methylesterase (PME) activity by regulating the expression of PME and PMEI genes, leading to a 10.4% reduction in the degree of pectin methylesterification. This may elucidate the absence of significant changes in pectin content under P deficiency conditions and the concurrent increase in Cd accumulation in pectin. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results indicated an increase in carboxyl groups in the root cell walls under P deficiency compared to sufficient P treatment. The results provide deep insights into the mechanisms of higher Cd accumulation in root mediated by P deficiency.

Abstract
Natural resistance associated macrophage protein 5 (NRAMP5) is a key transporter for cadmium (Cd) uptake by rice roots; however, the effect of OsNRAMP5 on Cd translocation and redistribution in rice plants remains unknown. In this study, an extremely low Cd-accumulation mutant (lcd1) and wild type (WT) plants were utilized to investigate the effect of OsNRAMP5 mutation on Cd translocation and redistribution via the xylem and phloem and its possible physiological mechanism using field, hydroponic and isotope-labelling experiments. The results showed that OsNRAMP5 mutation reduced xylem and phloem transport of Cd, due to remarkably lower Cd translocation from roots to shoots and from the leaves Ⅰ-Ⅲ to their corresponding nodes, as well as lower Cd concentrations in xylem and phloem sap of lcd1 compared to WT plants. Mutation of OsNRAMP5 reduced Cd translocation from roots to shoots in lcd1 plants by increasing Cd deposition in cellulose of root cell walls and reducing OsHMA2-and OsCCX2-mediated xylem loading of Cd, and the citric acid- and tartaric acid-mediated long-distance xylem transport of Cd. Moreover, OsNRAMP5 mutation inhibited Cd redistribution from flag leaves to nodes and panicles in lcd1 plants by increasing Cd sequestration in cellulose and vacuoles, and decreasing OsLCT1-mediated Cd phloem transport in flag leaves.

Abstract
The application of waste oyster shell in agriculture is of extensive concern due to its benefits on improving yields and inhibiting cadmium (Cd) accumulation in edible parts of crops. However, the underlying mechanisms responsible for oyster shell powder (OSP) that decreases Cd accumulation in crops remain poorly understood. This study explored the effects of OSP on growth and Cd accumulation in rice via pot experiments and hydroponics. Pot experiments showed that the application of 1 g·kg-1 OSP improved rice yields and decreased Cd concentrations in all tissues of rice, especially in grains, which was reduced by 43.5%. The pH was increased and the phytoavailability of Cd in soil was reduced by OSP supplementation. In addition, OSP also exhibited high dissolution of Ca, Fe, Zn, and Se. In hydroponics, OSP supply also suppressed Cd accumulation in rice and increased plant growth. Pretreatment with OSP inhibited the accumulation of Cd in the roots and shoots. Simultaneously, OSP reduced the content of Cd in the root cell sap, cell wall, and xylem sap, and downregulated the expression of OsNramp5, OsNramp1, OsIRT1, and OsHMA2. These findings suggested that the application of OSP could reduce Cd accumulation by inhibiting the expression of genes responsible for Cd absorption and xylem loading in rice.

Abstract
To avoid human health endangerment via the food chain, the investigation of Cd's effects on plant growth and development, and the discovery of various compounds that would mitigate the toxic effects of Cd, are essential. Galactoglucomannan oligosaccharides (GGMOs) are biologically active compounds, which improve the growth and development of plants. Therefore, the impact of GGMOs on the mitigation of Cd toxicity on maize (Zea mays L.) protoplasts was the main objective of this research. Here, protoplast viability, de novo cell wall regeneration on protoplasts' surface and Cd-uptake by protoplasts were studied. To study the influence of different treatments over time, the protoplasts were sampled on various days during the 14-day-long cultivation. The medium containing 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 6-benzylaminopurine, and GGMOs in a 10-9 M concentration with a pH of 3.8 was found to be optimal for protoplast cultivation. The toxic effect of Cd2+, which was evident already on the 2nd day of cultivation, resulted in decreased protoplast viability, the de novo cell wall regeneration, and in increased Cd-uptake. However, the application of GGMOs on Cd-stressed protoplasts increased cell wall regeneration. Fully or partly regenerated cell walls decreased the uptake of Cd2+ through the plasma membrane and improved protoplast viability. This is the first study that confirmed that biologically active oligosaccharides promote cell wall regeneration on the protoplast surface in both non-stress and Cd-stress conditions.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) pollution is a global problem affecting soil ecology and plant growth. Abscisic acid (ABA) acts as a growth and stress hormone, regulates cell wall synthesis, and plays an important role in plant responses to stress. There are few studies on the mechanisms behind abscisic acid alleviation of cadmium stress in Cosmos bipinnatus, especially in regards to regulation of the root cell wall. This study examined the effects of different concentrations of abscisic acid at different concentrations of cadmium stress. Through adding 5 μmol/L and 30 μmol/L cadmium, followed by spraying 10 μmol/L and 40 μmol/L ABA in a hydroponic experiment, it was found that under two concentrations of cadmium stress, low concentration of ABA improved root cell wall polysaccharide, Cd, and uronic acid content. Especially in pectin, after the application of low concentration ABA, the cadmium concentration was significantly increased by 1.5 times and 1.2 times compared with the Cd concentration under Cd5 and Cd30 treatment alone, respectively. Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) demonstrated that cell wall functional groups such as -OH and -COOH were increased with exposure to ABA. Additionally, the exogenous ABA also increased expression of three kinds of antioxidant enzymes and plant antioxidants. The results of this study suggest that ABA could reduce Cd stress by increasing Cd accumulation, promoting Cd adsorption on the root cell wall, and activating protective mechanisms. This result could help promote application of C. bipinnatus for phytostabilization of cadmium-contaminated soil.

Abstract
Phosphate fertilisers and past mining activity are significant source of cadmium (Cd) pollution; thus, the concentration of Cd in agricultural soils has been substantially rising. Various substances have been tested for their potential to alleviate the toxicity of Cd and stimulate the accumulation of Cd in plant organs. This study brought new insight of the impact of galactoglucomannan oligosaccharides (GGMOs) on the maize plants grown under/in Cd stress. The application of GGMOs reduced concentration of Cd in the maize leaves and thus GGMOs increased their growth (by 24%), concentration of photosynthetic pigments (up to 39.4%), effective quantum yield of photosystem II (up to 29.6%), and net photosynthetic rate (up to 19.6%). The concentrations of stress markers increased in the Cd and Cd + GGMOs treatment; however, significantly lower concentration was detected in the Cd + GGMOs treatment (malondialdehyde by 21.7%, hydrogen peroxide by 13%). The concentration of auxin increased almost by two-fold in the Cd + GGMOs treatment compared to the Cd treatment. The recovered auxin level and enhanced nutrient uptake are proposed mechanisms of GGMOs' action during stress. GGMOs are molecules with biostimulant potential that could support vitality of maize plants in Cd stress.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal whose pollution in rice fields leads to varying degrees of Cd accumulation in rice. Furthermore, the long-term consumption of Cd-contaminated rice is harmful to human health. Therefore, it is of great theoretical significance and application value to clarify the genetic regulation mechanism of Cd accumulation in rice and cultivate rice varieties with low Cd accumulation for the safe use of Cd-contaminated soils. This review summarizes the effects of Cd on rice growth, yield, and quality; the physiological and molecular mechanisms of Cd absorption in the roots, loading, and transport of Cd in the xylem, the distribution of Cd in nodes, redistribution of Cd in leaves, and accumulation of Cd in the grains; the regulation mechanism of the Cd stress response; and the breeding of rice with low Cd accumulation. Future directions on the genetic regulation of Cd in rice and application are also discussed. This review provides a theoretical basis for studies exploring the genetic regulation of Cd stress in rice. It also offers a basis for formulating effective strategies to reduce the Cd content in rice.

Abstract
The application of exogenous silicon (Si) reportedly is one of the eco-friendly practices to mitigate cadmium (Cd) phytotoxicity and regulate the chemical behaviors of Cd in the soil-rice system. But the efficiency of Si on the Cd retention by rice root varies with the Si fertilizer management. The objective of this paper was to interpret the differences in Cd immobilization by rice roots and relevant mechanisms under different ways of Si application (T-Si, supplied at transplanting stage; TJ-Si, split at transplanting and jointing stage with the ratio of 50 % to 50 %; J-Si, supplied at jointing stage and CK, none of Si application) in Cd-contaminated paddy soils. The results showed that the Cd-retention capacity of rice root was increased by 0.60 % ~ 3.06 % under different Si management when compared to CK. The concentrations of monosilicic acid in soils and in apoplast and symplast of roots were increased significantly by Si application, while Cd concentrations in apoplast and symplast of root were decreased by 28.50 % (T-Si), 40.64 % (TJ-Si) and 30.26 % (J-Si), respectively. The distribution of Cd in rice cell wall was increased significantly by TJ-Si. The Cd concentrations of inert fractions (F3, F4 and F6) in root of TJ-Si were raised obviously. Si application downregulated the expression of OsIRT2 and OsNramp5 while upregulated OsHMA3, and the expression of OsHMA3 treated by TJ-Si was obviously higher than CK and J-Si. The distributions of the passive Cd in roots bound with thiol compounds (NPT, GSH and PCs) and polysaccharide components (pectin, hemicelluloses 1 and hemicellulose 2) were raised much more by TJ-Si than by T-Si and J-Si. On the whole, compared with T-Si and J-Si, TJ-Si could more easily replenish soil available Si and enhance Cd sequestration in roots as the result of the decrease of Cd transport factor in roots. This study unravels some mechanisms about different Si management on increasing Cd retention and decreasing Cd migration in rice roots, and TJ-Si is worthy of being recommended.

Abstract
Soil cadmium (Cd) contamination resulting from anthropogenic activity poses severe threats to food safety and human health. In this study, a pot experiment was performed to evaluate the possibility of using urease-producing bacterium UR21 and eggshell (ES) waste for improving the physiological characteristics and reducing Cd accumulation of pakchoi (Brassica chinensis L.) plants. UR21 has siderophore and IAA production ability. The application of UR21 and ES individually or in combination could improve the root and shoot length, and fresh and dry weight of pakchoi plants under Cd stress. In Cd + ES + UR21-treated plants, the dry weight of shoot and root were increased by 61.54% and 72.73%, respectively. The chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, and carotenoid content were increased by 52.19%, 42.95%, and 95.56% in Cd + ES + UR21-treated plants. Meanwhile, the H2O2 and MDA content were decreased while the SOD and POD activity were increased, and an increase of soluble protein level in pakchoi plants was observed under Cd + ES + UR21 treatment. Importantly, eggshell and UR21 alone or in combination induced a decline of Cd content in pakchoi plants, especially that Cd + ES + UR21 treatment decreased Cd content in shoot and root by 26.96% and 42.91%, respectively. Meanwhile, the soil urease and sucrase activities were enhanced. Generally, the combined application of ureolytic bacteria UR21 and eggshell exhibited better effects than applied them individually in terms of alleviating Cd toxicity in pakchoi plants. Our findings may give a unique perspective for an eco-friendly and sustainable strategy to remediate heavy metal-polluted soils.

Abstract
Cell wall pectin is essential for cadmium (Cd) accumulation in rice roots and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) plays an important role as a signaling molecule in cell wall modification. The role of H2O2 in Cd binding in cell wall pectin is unclear. D62B, a Cd-safe rice line, was found to show a greater Cd binding capacity in the root cell wall than a high Cd-accumulating rice line of Wujin4B. In this study, we further investigated the mechanism of the role of H2O2 in Cd binding in root cell wall pectin of D62B compared with Wujin4B. Cd treatment significantly increased the H2O2 concentration and pectin methyl esterase (PME) activity in the roots of D62B and Wujin4B by 22.45-42.44% and 12.15-15.07%, respectively. The H2O2 concentration and PME activity significantly decreased in the roots of both rice lines when H2O2 was scavenged by 4-hydroxy-Tempo. The PME activity of D62B was higher than that of Wujin4B. The concentrations of high and low methyl-esterified pectin in the roots of D62B significantly increased when exposed to Cd alone but significantly decreased when exposed to Cd and exogenous 4-hydroxy-Tempo. No significant difference was detected in Wujin4B. Exogenous 4-hydroxy-Tempo significantly decreased the Cd concentration in the cell wall pectin in both rice lines. The modification of H2O2 in Cd binding was further explored by adding H2O2. The maximum Cd adsorption amounts on the root cell walls of both rice lines were improved by exogenous H2O2·H2O2 treatment significantly influenced the relative peak area of the main functional groups (hydroxyl, carboxyl), and the groups intensely shifted after Cd adsorption in the root cell wall of D62B, while there was no significant difference in Wujin4B. In conclusion, Cd stress stimulated the production of H2O2, thus promoting pectin biosynthesis and demethylation and releasing relative functional groups involved in Cd binding on cell wall pectin, which is beneficial for Cd retention in the roots of Cd-safe rice line.

Abstract
Cell wall-polysaccharides play a crucial role in heavy metals binding, and hence, contribute to heavy metal detoxication in plants. However, there is no data regarding the molecular mechanisms of vanadium (V) binding to root cell walls in plants, especially in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Taking two rice cultivars with various V tolerance as the research material, the present study investigated the effect of various V concentrations on subcellular distribution of V and revealed the regulatory mechanism of cell wall polysaccharides to V exposure. The results showed that rice roots inhibited the upward movement of V, and root cell walls accumulated 69.85-82.71% of V in roots. Furthermore, hemicellulose-1 (HC-1) in cell walls shared up to 67.72% and 66.95% of the cell-wall-bound V in tolerant and sensitive cultivars, respectively. FTIR spectroscopy demonstrated that V stress induced the remolding of cell wall polysaccharides. Under V stress, V-tolerant rice generated up to 19.3% pectin, 40.9% HC-1, and 49.34% HC-2, which were higher than V-sensitive cultivar. The genes encoding UGDH, UGE, and AXS for polysaccharide biosynthesis were higher expressed in V-tolerant rice than V-sensitive rice when exposed to V. The results could provide novel insight for phytoremediation and food security guarantees.

Abstract
This paper aims to investigate the mechanism by which dark septate endophytes (DSEs) enhance cadmium (Cd) tolerance in there host plants. Maize (Zea mays L.) was inoculated with a DSE, Exophiala pisciphila, under Cd stress at different concentrations (0, 5, 10, and 20 mg·kg−1). The results show that, under 20 mg/kg Cd stress, DSE significantly increased maize biomass and plant height, indicating that DSE colonization can be utilized to increase the Cd tolerance of host plants. More Cd was retained in DSE-inoculated roots, especially that fixed in the root cell wall (RCW). The capability of DSE to induce a higher Cd holding capacity in the RCW is caused by modulation of the total sugar and uronic acid of DSE-colonized RCW, mainly the pectin and hemicellulose fractions. The fourier-transform spectroscopy analysis results show that carboxyl, hydroxyl, and acidic groups are involved in Cd retention in the DSE-inoculated RCW. The promotion of the growth of maize and improvement in its tolerance to Cd due to DSEs are related to restriction of the translocation of Cd from roots to shoots; resistance of Cd uptake Cd inside cells; and the increase in RCW-integrated Cd through modulating RCW polysaccharide components.
