Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to evaluate the protective effects of alamandine, a new member of the angiotensin family, against doxorubicin (DOX)-induced nephrotoxicity in rats. METHODS Rats were intraperitoneally injected with DOX (3.750 mg/kg/week) to reach a total cumulative dose of 15 mg/kg by day 35. Alamandine (50 µg/kg/day) was administered to the rats via mini-osmotic pumps for 42 days. At the end of the experiment, rats were placed in the metabolic cages for 24 h so that their water intake and urine output could be measured. After scarification, the rats' serum and kidney tissues were collected, and biochemical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical studies were carried out. RESULTS DOX administration yielded increases in pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-1β and IL-6, pro-fibrotic proteins transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β), pro-inflammatory transcription factor nuclear kappa B (NF-κB), kidney malondialdehyde (MDA), creatinine clearance, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), and water intake. On the other hand, the DOX-treated group exhibited decreased renal superoxide dismutase (SOD), renal glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity, and urinary output. Alamandine co-therapy decreased these effects, as confirmed by histopathology and immunohistochemical analysis. CONCLUSIONS The results suggest that alamandine can prevent nephrotoxicity induced by DOX in rats.

Abstract
Fertility control with medicinal plants has been reported in the ancient and modern medical literature. In this research, the effects of methanol and oil extracts of Ocimum gratissimum (OG) on testicular morphology and epididymal sperm reserve were investigated in adult male Wistar rats. Fifty-five rats divided into 5 groups A-E of 11 rats each was used for this study. Methanol and oil extracts of Ocimum gratissimum were administered at two doses 250 and 500 mg/kg for 28 days. Animals in control group A received distilled water for the same duration. At day 14 and 28 of the study, five animals were sacrificed from each group, and their blood and testes samples were collected for the analysis. Spermiogram, testicular biometry, serum testosterone assay, and testicular morphology were assessed from harvested testes. The results revealed that there was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in serum testosterone level. There was also no significant difference (p > 0.05) in sperm volume, livability and abnormalities but there was significant differences (p < 0.05) in the sperm motility and concentration. Testicular biometry and testicular morphology between control and treated groups did not reveal any significant differences (p > 0.05). The study showed that methanol and oil extracts of Ocimum gratissimum (OG) did not have any inhibitory effect on the reproductive function and fertility of adult male albino rats. Further works should be carried out on isolated active fractions of this plant on male fertility.

Abstract
Gentamicin, an aminoglycoside drug, used for the treatment of Gram-negative bacterial infections. Despite its potency against bacterial infections, its clinical use is limited owing to nephrotoxicity effect. However, the study investigated the nephroprotective effect of fatty acids from ethanolic extract of Moringa oleifera seeds (EEMOS) against gentamicin-induced kidney injury in rats. Forty-five male Wistar rats, 100-160 g, were divided into 5 groups as follows: Group 1 (control), 5 rats, received 0.2 ml/100 g/day of propylene glycol orally for 28 days. Group 2, 10 rats, received 100 mg/kg/day (i.p) of gentamicin (GENT) for 8 days. Group 3-5, 10 rats each, treated with EEMOS orally for 28 days at graded doses of 100, 200 and 400 mg/kg respectively after GENT treatment. Twenty four after treatment, five rats from each group were sacrificed. The remaining 5 rats were sacrificed after 2 weeks recovery period from the drugs. The result showed that GENT elicited polyuria, elevated plasma creatinine, urea, and lower plasma electrolytes and creatinine clearance levels. Measurements of 24 h urinary output demonstrated marked decrease in creatinine and potassium levels in the GENT-treated group, whereas sodium level remain unchanged. Also, GENT caused significant decrease in superoxide dismutase and an increase in malondialdehyde levels in the kidney of the rats. Histopathological examination revealed evidence of necrosis of the kidney. Treatment with EEMOS significantly ameliorated the alterations caused by GENT in the plasma, urine and kidney homogenate of the rats. Hence, the mono- and poly-unsaturated fatty acids present in EEMOS were responsible for its renoprotective ability.

Abstract
This study evaluates the reproductive toxicity of ethyl acetate and butanolic fractions from crude methanolic leaf extract of Ocimum gratissimum in male Wistar rats. Acute toxicity was assessed to determine the safety dose, Sub-chronic reproductive toxicity studies were carried out by administering daily 25, 100 and 400 mg/kg body weight doses of the fractions to respective group of animals and 1 ml of normal saline daily for the control group for 28 days. Blood, epididymis and testes were harvested for reproductive hormones, sperm parameters, and histopathologic analysis respectively. There was significant (P < 0.05) increase in serum levels of testosterone, body-weight gain, sperm count. There was also apparent increase in mean-testicular weight and preservation of testicular histology with increase spermatogenesis in both the ethyl acetate and butanolic fraction treated groups compared with control. Serum levels of luteinising hormone was however significantly (P < 0.05) decrease across the groups compared to control. These effects were more pronounced in the butanolic fraction group compared to the ethyl acetate treated group. Sperm motility was also significantly (P < 0.05) higher in the ethyl acetate treated group compared to control. Findings from this studies demonstrate that these fractions were non-toxic at the tested doses with regards to male reproduction but, rather, exhibited fertility enhancing effects which was better with the butanolic fraction. Our findings also shows that the ethyl acetate fraction may be safer than the butanolic fraction.

Abstract
Background: Ocimum gratissimum (OG) is used in the traditional management of diabetes in Nigeria. This study investigated the anti-diabetic potential of OG leaf fractions (OGLF) in a rat model of Type-2 diabetes (T2D). Methods: Methanol crude extract of OG leaf was fractionated with solvents of increasing order of polarity (n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl-acetate, n-butanol and water). The anti-diabetic potential of the fractions was evaluated in vivo. T2D was induced in Albino Wistar rats and treated with OGLF. Results: The T2D rats showed significant elevation in serum levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG), liver and kidney function biomarkers. At 4-week of intervention with OGLF, the untreated diabetic control group maintained severe hyperglycaemia in the presence of 61.7% serum insulin, 17.3% pancreatic β-cell function (HOMA-β) and 51.5% Insulin sensitivity. The glucose tolerance ability was enhanced in the n-butanol-fraction (OGb) treated group. With 74.8% available serum insulin and 38.6% improvement in insulin sensitivity, the OGb treated group had a 63.5% reduction in FBG and it was found to be most effective as it ameliorates a majority of the changes caused in the studied parameters in diabetic rats. Conclusions: The data from this study suggest that OGb fraction is a potential candidate for the development of an effective drug for the management of T2D.
