Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the levels of oxidative stress markers in the umbilical cord blood between pregnant women diagnosed with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) and low-risk controls. METHODS The sample consisted of 131 patients, including 55 pregnant women with IDA and 76 controls with similar demographic characteristics. Participants were selected from patients delivered at ≥37 weeks. We compared the two groups in terms of the native thiol, total thiol, disulfide, and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels measured in pregnant women's umbilical cord venous blood. RESULTS The native thiol and total thiol values were statistically significantly lower in the anemia group, and the disulfide and IMA values were statistically significantly higher in the IDA group (P < 0.001). Perinatal outcomes were similar between the groups. CONCLUSION In the present study, pregnant women with IDA had lower native and total thiol values and higher disulfide and IMA values in umbilical cord blood. Iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy may be a potential cause of increased oxidative stress.

Abstract
PURPOSE Ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), total oxidant status (TOS), and total antioxidant status (TAS) are biomarkers used to evaluate oxidative stress status in various diseases including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). In this study, we investigated the effects of disease severity and comorbidity on IMA, TOS and TAS levels in OSA. METHODS Patients with severe OSA (no-comorbidity, one comorbidity, and multiple comorbidities) and mild-moderate OSA (no-comorbidity, one and multiple comorbidities), and healthy controls were included in the study. Polysomnography was applied to all cases and blood samples were taken from each participant at the same time of day. ELISA was used to measure IMA levels in serum samples and colorimetric commercial kits were used to perform TOS and TAS analyses. In addition, routine biochemical analyses were performed on all serum samples. RESULTS A total of 74 patients and 14 healthy controls were enrolled. There was no statistically significant difference between the disease groups according to gender, smoking status, age, body mass index (BMI), HDL, T3, T4, TSH, and B12 (p > 0.05). As the severity of OSA and comorbidities increased, IMA, TOS, apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), desaturation index (T90), cholesterol, LDL, triglyceride, AST, and CRP values increased significantly (p < 0.05). On the other hand, TAS, minimum desaturation, and mean desaturation values decreased significantly (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS We concluded that IMA, TOS, and TAS levels may indicate OSA-related oxidative stress, but as the severity of OSA increases and with the presence of comorbidity, IMA and TOS levels may increase and TAS levels decrease. These findings suggest that disease severity and presence/absence of comorbidity should be considered in studies on OSA.

Maternal serum ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), total-sulphydryl concentrations, and some subclinic inflammatory markers in hyperemesis gravidarum (HG). Taiwan J Obstet Gynecol 2023; 62:101-106. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigates the relationship between Ischemia Modified Albumin and Total-Sulphydryl levels with some subclinical inflammatory markers in patients with hyperemesis gravidarum. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 258 pregnant women, 137 with hyperemesis gravidarum and 121 low-risk pregnancies, were included in this case-control study. The patients were divided into three groups according to the severity of hyperemesis gravidarum as mild (n = 53), moderate (n = 41) and severe (n = 43). RESULTS Serum Ischemia Modified Albumin levels were statistically different from the control group (P < 0.001). Among the subgroups, the highest Ischemia Modified Albumin value was observed in the severe hyperemesis gravidarum group, and the highest Total-Sulphydryl level was observed in the mild hyperemesis gravidarum group (P < 0.001). Serum potassium levels were higher in the control group (P < 0.001). While a negative correlation was observed between Ischemia Modified Albumin and Total-Sulphydryl, a positive correlation was observed in Platelet crit, C-reactive protein, and ketonuria. As the severity of the disease increases, Ischemia Modified Albumin, which is an oxidative stress factor, increases, and Total-Sulphydryl levels decrease (p < 0.001). Logistic regression analysis revealed that a one-unit increase in Ischemia Modified Albumin resulted in a statistically significant 1.9-fold increase in the risk of Severe hyperemesis gravidarum (OR 1.92, 95% CI 1.008-1.956; P = 0.01) CONCLUSION: This study shows that there is a condition in the pathophysiology of hyperemesis gravidarum, with an increase in Ischemia Modified Albumin and a decrease in Total-Sulphydryl levels, and oxidative stress occurs. It was important to detect increased Ischemia Modified Albumin and decreased antioxidant values in relation to the inflammatory factors that were effective in the severe hyperemesis gravidarum group.

Abstract
There is growing evidence that oxidative stress is involved in the pathogenesis of numerous conditions, including dermatological diseases. Various markers are available to assess oxidative stress, but none of these can be considered the ideal marker. Recent studies have shown that ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) is not only an indicator of ischemia, but also a marker of oxidative stress. We have conducted a narrative review to evaluate the role of IMA in dermatological diseases. We have identified 24 original articles that evaluated IMA in skin disorders (psoriasis, acne vulgaris, hidradenitis suppurativa, urticaria, vitiligo and Behcet’s disease) and hair disorders (alopecia areata, androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium). The results of the studies analyzed reveal that IMA may be considered a new marker of oxidative stress in dermatological diseases and offer new insights into the pathogenesis of these disorders and the theoretical basis for the development of new, effective, targeted therapies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first review that gathers up data on the role of IMA in dermatological diseases.

Association of Maternal Serum Ischemia Modified Albumin (IMA) with Placental Histopathological Changes and Fetomaternal Outcome: A Prospective Case Control Study in Normotensive and Pre-eclamptic Women. Abstract
Introduction Ischemia and oxidative stress leads to generation of hydroxyl free radicals and modification of 'N-terminus' of human serum albumin. This modified albumin molecule, known as Ischemia Modified Albumin (IMA), is elevated in early stages of ischemia. It has recently been approved by US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) for its clinical use, as early marker of myocardial ischemia in cardiology. IMA is a novel marker of ischemia and is elevated in other clinical conditions associated with ischemia like pulmonary embolism, uncontrolled type II diabetes mellitus, acute decompensated heart failure, preeclampsia, recurrent pregnancy losses and IUGR. Role of IMA in birth asphyxia in perinatology is of current interest and needs further research. Methodology A prospective case control study was conducted in a tertiary center in North India for one year. Total 80 pregnant women between 34 and 40 weeks were recruited and allocated in two groups. Case group comprised of 40 pre-eclamptic pregnant women and control group comprised of 40 normotensive pregnant women. Comparison and association of maternal serum IMA levels with fetomaternal outcome and number and types of placental histopathological changes was done in two groups. Results In preeclampsia group mean serum IMA (115.23 ± 49.51) was significantly higher as compared to the normotensive group (79.21 ± 14.35). The optimum cut off value of IMA to detect a case was 94.5 IU/ml (sensitivity 65%, specificity 87.5%, PPV 83.9%, NPV 71.4% and diagnostic accuracy of 76.3). Pre-eclamptic women, had significantly higher incidence of PTVD, lower fetal birth weight and placental histopathological changes as compared to normotensive group. 83.8% of the women with raised IMA levels were pre-eclamptic. Raised IMA levels were significantly associated with higher incidence of PTVD, birth weight ≤ 2 kg and hypoxic histopathological lesions of chorangiosis, intervillous fibrin and hyalinization. Conclusion Determination of maternal serum IMA levels early in pregnancy can predict preeclampsia and avoid future severe preeclampsia related complications. It might be useful to optimize both maternal and fetal/neonatal outcomes.

Abstract
We compared markers of oxidative stress (OS) in mothers with and without fetal neural tube defects (NTDs). Methods: Pregnant mothers in the second trimester with NTD-affected fetuses and age, gestational age, and body mass index-matched control mothers with unaffected fetuses were included. Maternal serum thiol-disulfide homeostasis parameters and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) were measured. Results: In 30 affected mothers compared to 31 controls, disulfide levels, disulfide/native thiol, and disulfide/total thiol ratios were higher; native and total thiol levels and native thiol/total thiol ratios were lower (p < 0.001). Mothers with NTD-affected fetuses had higher levels of IMA than controls (p = 0.025). Conclusion: The thiol-disulfide homeostasis balance was shifted in favor of disulfide, suggesting increased thiol oxidation and OS in the second trimester of NTD-affected pregnancies. Maternal levels of IMA, an oxidatively altered form of albumin, thus a measure of OS, were higher in NTD-affected second trimester pregnancies compared to controls.

Abstract
Background: Ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) is an oxidative stress marker used to assess the presence and severity of oxidative stress. This marker was first used for early diagnosis of myocardial ischemia. Materials & methods: A variety of IMA studies were carried out to show the effect of oxidative stress on gynecological disorders. Conclusion: This analysis summarizes the literature by conducting electronic research on the relationship between IMA and gynecological disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Hyperviscosity of blood secondary to polycythemia results in increased resistance to blood flow and decrease in delivery of oxygen. OBJECTIVE To evaluate whether serum endocan, NSE and IMA levels can be compared in terms of endothelial injury/ dysfunction and neuronal damage in term neonates with polycythemia who underwent PET. METHODS 38 symptomatic polycythemic newborns having PET and 38 healthy newborns were included in the study. Blood samples for endocan, NSE and IMA were taken at only postnatal 24 hours of age in the control group and in polycytemia group just before PET, at 24 and 72 hours after PET. RESULTS The polycythemia group had higher serum endocan(1073,4 ± 644,8 vs. 378,8 ± 95,9ng/ml; p<0.05), IMA(1,32 ± 0,34 vs.0,601 ± 0,095absorbance unit; p<0.05) and NSE(44,7 ± 4,3 vs. 26,91 ± 7,12μg/l; p<0.05) levels than control group before the PET procedure. At 24 hours after PET, IMA(0,656 ± 0,07 vs. 0,601 ± 0,095absorbance unit; p<0.05) and endocan(510,9 ± 228,6 vs. 378,8 ± 95,9ng/ml; p<0.05) levels were closer to the control group, being still statistically significant higher. NSE levels decreased to control group levels having no difference between the PET and control groups at 24 hours after PET (28,98 ± 6,5 vs. 26,91 ± 7,12μg/l; p>0.05). At 72 hours after PET the polycythemia and control groups did not differ statistically for IMA, endocan and NSE levels (p>0.05). CONCLUSION Serum endocan and IMA levels can be used as a biomarker for endothelial damage/ dysfunction and tissue hypoxia in infants with symptomatic polycytemia.

Abstract
Background: Thiols and ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) are novel biomarkers for the evaluation of the oxidative stress (OS) that has been associated with the pathogenesis of various neoplastic and inflammatory diseases. The aim of this study was to find out the dynamic thiol-disulfide homeostasis and IMA levels in patients with cutaneous mastocytosis (CM) to demonstrate the presence of the OS. Methods: A total of 36 patients with CM and 27 age- and sex-matched healthy participants were included in this study. Serum thiols and IMA levels were measured and compared between the 2 groups. Results: Levels of native thiol, total thiol, disulfide, disulfide/native thiol, disulfide/total thiol, native thiol/total thiol, and IMA were similar in both patients with CM and the control group. No significant difference was found with regard to mediator-releasing symptoms, clinical types, and remission status between the OS markers (thiol/disulfide variables and IMA levels) of the patients (P > 0.05). Conclusions: To our knowledge, this study is the first study in the literature that investigated thiol-disulfide homeostasis and IMA levels in pediatric patients with CM. Our study indicated that OS plays no role in the course of the pediatric CM.

Abstract
Background The purpose of the study was to determine oxidative stress-related plasma thiol/disulphide, ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels and ferroxidase activity among women with obesity in insulin-resistant and non-insulin-resistant groups in comparison with an overweight group. Methods We compared plasma thiol/disulphide, IMA levels, and ferroxidase activity between the study groups. We analyzed plasma thiol/disulphide homeostasis with a newly developed automated measurement method; IMA with Albumin Cobalt Binding Test and ferroxidase (ceruloplasmin) levels with an automated, colourimetric method. Results There were no significant differences between insulin-resistant and non-insulin-resistant women with obesity in terms of plasma native thiol, total thiol, disulphide, disulphide/native thiol ratio, disulphide/total thiol or native thiol/total thiol values. Ferroxidase activity was higher in insulin-resistant than in non-insulin-resistant women with obesity and higher in the total women with obesity group than in the overweight subjects (p<0.001, and p=0.014, respectively). IMA was lower in the insulin-resistant group than in the non-insulin-resistant group and overweight groups (p=0.011, and p=0.042, respectively). Conclusions The significantly greater increase in ferroxidase activity in insulin-resistant subjects with obesity may reflect its role as a positive acute phase protein. These findings may be related to the pathogenesis of the disease. Changes in oxidative status occur in women with obesity, and partially in overweight subjects. The ferroxidase activity of ceruloplasmin plays a crucial role in iron homeostasis and lowers oxidative stress by reducing the detrimental effects of iron.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate cord blood ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels in pregnancies with intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) and to determine its association with abnormal fetal Doppler findings.Methods: Umbilical cord IMA levels were assessed in 34 pregnant women with IUGR and 32 pregnancies with normal fetal development. Associations of IMA with abnormal umbilical artery Doppler findings, preeclampsia, and oligohydramnios were investigated. IMA was measured using a colorimetric test based on a decrease in cobalt binding.Results: No significant between group differences in maternal age, body mass index, gravida, and parity were identified. The mean gestational age at delivery was earlier in the IUGR group than in the control group (35.7 ± 3.2 versus 38.4 ± 1.2, respectively). The mean cord blood IMA values for the IUGR group were significantly increased compared to those in the control group (0.565 ± 0.22 versus 0.250 ± 0.12, respectively, p = .001). There was a significant positive correlation between umbilical artery pulsatility index and IMA levels in the IUGR group. Patients with preeclampsia, oligohydramnios, and abnormal nonstress test results in the IUGR group had significantly higher IMA levels. Patients with systolic to diastolic ratios >3 and pulsatility index (PI) above the 95th percentile in the IUGR group had significantly higher cord blood IMA levels (p = .001 and p = .007, respectively).Conclusions: Cord blood IMA values may be a useful marker for perinatal asphyxia. Abnormal Doppler findings are associated with increased IMA levels in complicated pregnancies with IUGR.

Abstract
This study was designed to evaluate umbilical cord ischaemia-modified albumin (IMA) levels and the cord blood gas parameters of foetuses with or without nuchal cords, at the time of elective C-section. The cross-sectional study population consisted of the patients who were admitted to the Tertiary Care Center between February and June 2015. Women with uncomplicated single term gestations between 37 and 40 completed weeks and scheduled for elective C-sections were included in the study. Fifty cases with a nuchal cord and 50 cases without a nuchal cord were recruited. Nuchal cord blood gas analysis and the IMA levels were evaluated. The IMA levels in umbilical artery of foetuses both in the study and control groups were similar (0.714 ± 0.150 vs. 0.689 ± 0.107 ABSU, p = .340, respectively). The umbilical artery pH values of the study group were significantly lower than that in the control group (7.31 ± 0.04 vs. 7.32 ± 0.03, p = .042; respectively). The results of the current study indicate that the nuchal cord has an impact on the foetal cord blood gas parameters to some extent before the initiation of labour. Fortunately, this impact does not end up with foetal tissue ischaemia, as confirmed by the IMA levels. Impact statement What is already known on this subject? The impact of nuchal cord on perinatal outcomes has been the subject of research for many years. Although the accumulated data has pointed out some unfavourable perinatal effects, the heterogeneity of the study groups both including a vaginal delivery and C-section and the inability to adjust the interfering factors ended up with some controversies. This is why there is not much known about the effects of the nuchal cord in women who are not in the labour process. What do the results of this study add? The current study aimed to exclude the interfering effects such as the active stage of labour. In this study, elective caesarean sections were selected as the study population to evaluate the effects of the nuchal cord on cord blood gas parameters and the IMA values. pH analysis in cord blood is used to detect hypoxia and the IMA is a new ischaemia marker. The results revealed that the in utero nuchal cord is associated with a significantly higher pCO2 and lower pH values and similar IMA values. What are the implications of these findings for clinical practice and/or further research? The final outcome supports that the nuchal cord causes alterations in cord blood gas analysis but this does not reach critical levels. Therefore, the results show that there is no need to change clinical practice when the nuchal cord is detected by ultrasound in a term gestation.

Abstract
Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the ischemia-modified albumin (IMA) level, and the IMA/albumin ratio (IMAR) in healthy pregnant women, and pregnant women with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP). Material and method: This cross-sectional study included 53 women with ICP and 52 healthy pregnant women. Their serum IMA and albumin levels were analyzed, and the women were followed up to delivery. Results: No significant intergroup differences were identified in maternal age, body mass index, and gestational age at the time that the blood samples were taken. The gestational age at delivery and the serum albumin level was significantly lower (p = .002 and p < .0001, respectively) in the ICP group than in the healthy pregnant women. Although no differences in IMA levels were shown between the groups, IMA/albumin levels were higher in the ICP group than in the healthy pregnant women (p = .004). Conclusion: Serum IMA levels did not differ between pregnant women with ICP and healthy pregnant women, while the IMAR was significantly higher in the ICP group versus the healthy pregnant women.
