Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS Urinary incontinence (UI) is a prevalent condition that can impact the quality of life of physically active women. This study aimed to evaluate knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to UI among women who exercise in gyms. METHODS A cross-sectional observational study was carried out from March to July 2022, in gyms located in the city of Parnaíba, in northeastern Brazil with physically active women. For data collection, the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), the International Incontinence Consultation Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF), a specific KAP-UI questionnaire and a standardized form for sociodemographic, gynecological and obstetric data were used. The Mann-Whitney test, Fisher's exact test and chi-square tests were performed to analyze differences between subgroups formed on the basis of the presence or absence of urinary incontinence. RESULTS The research included 256 female participants with a median age of 33 (18-67) years, good education (≥ 12 years of studies) (97%), majority single (60%), and monthly income greater than US$ 235.51 (68%). The prevalence of UI was 43% (n = 110) with a moderate impact on quality of life. Among the participants, 51.8% had adequate knowledge and 98.7% demonstrated positive attitudes toward UI. However, only 29.5% adopted treatment practices, while preventive practices were carried out by only 16.4%. Factors significantly associated with inadequate knowledge included lower levels of education (p = 0.030), single marital status (p = 0.031), monthly income below US$235.51 (p = 0.019), and bodybuilding as the main physical activity (p = 0.039). Conversely, women who were highly physically active were more likely to have adequate knowledge. Significant associations were found between adequate knowledge and preventive and therapeutic practices (p = 0.003), as well as between inadequate knowledge and inadequate practices. CONCLUSIONS Although only half of the participants had adequate knowledge about UI, the majority demonstrated a positive attitude toward the health problem. However, preventive practices were low among women without UI, as was the search for treatment among those with UI. Factors such as age, education, marital status, income, type and level of physical activity were linked to knowledge and preventive and treatment practices. Adequate knowledge was associated with effective preventive and therapeutic practices for IU by physically active women.

Abstract
The study aimed to investigate the effects of footwear on the electromyographic (EMG) activity of pelvic floor muscles (PFMs) and internal oblique (IO) muscles during running at different speeds. The study also aimed to explore the correlation between EMG activity of PFMs and IO muscles and participants' morphological characteristics. Ten nulliparous female runners were included in the study. The participants ran for 90 s at speeds of 9, 11, and 13 km/h wearing both traditional and minimalist shoes. EMG outcomes were presented as a percentage of maximum voluntary contraction (%MVC). Comparative analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon rank test. Correlational analysis was performed using the Rho-Spearman correlation coefficient. The %MVC for the IO muscles was significantly lower when using minimalist shoes compared to traditional shoes (p = 0.04). No statistically significant differences were found for the PFMs (p > 0.05). The study also observed large correlations between age and %MVC of the PFMs and IO muscles (rho = -0.64; p = 0.04). Minimalist shoes decreased the activity of IO muscles in female runners. However, no significant differences in EMG activity of PFMs were found when comparing traditional and minimalist footwear. The long-term effects of minimalist footwear on EMG activity of PFMs and IO muscles, as well as their relationship to morphological characteristics, require further investigation.

Abstract
Sexuality and urinary function have received scarce research attention in younger women. In this cross-sectional survey study, prevalence, type, severity, and impact of urinary incontinence (UI), and its relationship with sexuality was investigated in 261 nulliparous women aged 18-27 (M = 19.08 years). Modules of the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire and the Female Sexual Function Index assessed UI, sexual function, and quality of life. Thirty percent of the sample experienced UI, and 26% reported sexual function problems. A significant small negative correlation was found between UI and sexual lubrication (p = .017). Forty-three percent of participants in the total sample reported that they were bothered by urinary symptoms, and 13% avoided sexual activity due to urinary symptoms. Of those classified as incontinent, 90% were bothered by their symptoms. Urinary symptoms are impactful on the quality of life and sexual lives of young women, but despite their high prevalence, they remain a largely understudied and undertreated issue in this age group. Further research is crucial for improving awareness and access to treatment for this underserved population.

Abstract
Urinary incontinence (UI) in female athletes can impair their quality-of-life (QoL) and reduce their participation in sports. This review aims to evaluate the effect of pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT) in treating UI in women participating in high-impact sports. Furthermore, to assess the influence of PFMT on pelvic floor muscles (PFM) function and the UI impact on their QoL. For this purpose, a systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and non-RCTs was performed. An electronic search was conducted on PubMed, EMBASE, SciELO, and Scopus. The quality of evidence was assessed using the PEDro and ROBINS-I scales. The Consensus on Exercise Reporting Template (CERT) was used to assess the quality of PFMT protocols. All studies were available in full-text including incontinent female participants who are practitioners of high-impact sports, investigating PFMT vs control groups(inactive) or undergoing other treatments. Three RCTs and two non-RCTs (104 participants) were analyzed. PFMT provided a significant improvement in UI symptoms with a reduction in the frequency (n=3) and the amount of UI (n=5). PFM function was assessed in three studies, and two found improvement in maximal contraction and one in vaginal resting pressure in favor of PFMT. None of the two studies that assessed QoL found a difference after PFMT intervention.

Abstract
Background Physical effort in sports practice is an important trigger for urinary incontinence (UI). Among high-impact sports, all track and field events require continuous ground impacts and/or abdominal contractions that increase intra-abdominal pressure and impact on the pelvic floor musculature. However, studies to date have not taken into account the specific sports tasks that elite track and field athletes perform according to the competitive events for which they are training. Methods This cross-sectional study describes the prevalence, type, and severity of UI among elite track and field athletes considering their event specialization and training characteristics. A total of 211 female and 128 male elite track and field athletes answered an online questionnaire including anthropometric measures, medical history, training characteristics, and UI symptoms. To determine self-reported UI, the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-UI Short-Form (ICIQ-UI-SF) was used. To determine UI type and severity, the incontinence questionnaire and incontinence severity index were used, respectively. Results The ICIQ-UI-SF showed that 51.7% of female and 18.8% of male athletes had UI, with stress UI (SUI) being the most frequent type (64.4%) for female and urge UI for male athletes (52.9%). Of athletes who were not identified as having UI according to the questionnaires, 24.6% of female and 13.6% of male athletes experienced urine leakage during training, mainly during jumping. Although training characteristics (experience, volume, and resting) were not related to UI, female athletes specializing in vertical jumps showed significantly lower UI prevalence compared to those specializing in horizontal jumps (χ2 [1] = 4.409, p = 0.040), middle-distance running (χ2 [1] = 4.523, p = 0.033), and sprint/hurdles events (χ2 [1] = 4.113, p = 0.043). These female athletes also displayed the lowest training volume. No differences were shown for males (p > 0.05). Conclusions Over half of the elite track and field female athletes have self-reported UI, especially SUI, and prevalence is higher when considering urine leakage events during training. Training characteristics and specialization were not related to UI identified by questionnaires, but female athletes specializing in vertical jump events showed the lowest prevalence and training volume. Males showed significantly lower prevalence, without correlation with their specialization. Sport professionals should increase UI detection among elite athletes and design-specific approaches that consider their physical demands to make visible, prevent, or improve pelvic floor dysfunction in this population. Abstract
Background Chronic lower urinary symptoms (LUTS) are reported to affect more than half of women of all ages and have a significant impact on their quality of life (QoL). We aimed in this study to assess the QoL of adult Saudi women with chronic LUTS. Methods A cross-sectional study was done on 390 female patients diagnosed with LUTS at three tertiary care hospitals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from October to December 2021. LUTS are classified into three categories: symptoms related to bladder storage (increased daytime frequency, nocturia, and urinary incontinence [UI]), symptoms of bladder voiding (hesitancy, extended micturition time, and insufficient emptying), and symptoms involved in the post-urination phase such as post-micturition dribbling. The data was collected using a self-administered questionnaire which comprised demographic characteristics, International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) for assessment of LUTS severity, and King's Health Questionnaire (KHQ) for assessment of QoL. Results After analyzing the study results, we found that symptoms were mild, moderate, and severe in 11%, 51%, and 39% of participants, respectively. Increased age and parity were found to have a significant association with increased symptom severity (p-value <0.05). The current study reported a moderate effect of LUTS on QoL. There was a significant correlation between increased symptom severity and negative impact on QoL, excluding the personal relationships domain. The highest scores in KHQ, which indicate worse QoL, were found in the domains of incontinence impact and emotions, while the lowest scores, which indicate better QoL, were found in the domains of social limitations and severity measures. Employed females were found to have worse QoL in the severity measures domain, which refers to the degree of urinary symptoms affecting day-to-day functioning. In addition, younger age, below 45 years, was found associated significantly with better QoL, especially in the domains of general health, personal relationships, and severity measures. Conclusion In the current study, the majority of patients reported moderate symptoms severity. Chronic LUTS have a significant impact on the QoL of Saudi women in many aspects, including physical, social, and emotional health, especially for those who have moderate to severe symptoms. Healthcare providers should assess high-risk women for the presence of LUTS. Furthermore, we recommend evaluating the QoL of patients with LUTS as a part of routine management.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION AND AIMS Pelvic floor dysfunction (PFD) is a collection of signs, symptoms and conditions affecting the pelvic floor and urinary incontinence (UI) is the most common type of PFD. Recent systematic reviews have indicated a higher prevalence of UI among female athletes compared to their non-athletic counterparts. To date, no review has been undertaken to investigate female athletes' experiences of PFD. This review aims to offer insight and understanding, through aggregation, summary, synthesis and interpretation of findings from studies that report elite female athletes' experiences of symptoms of PFD. METHODS The review protocol was registered in PROSPERO in August 2020. A systematic search was conducted in Embase, MEDLINE (OVID), Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Web of Science for studies published in the English language reporting elite female athletes' experiences of symptoms of PFD. This review included primary research studies that involved elite female athletes of any age or ethnicity. RESULTS Of the 1922 citations retrieved in the search, 32 studies met the methodological criteria for data extraction and analysis. Five main themes emerged: (1) triggers for symptoms of PFD; (2) strategies adopted by athletes to manage/mitigate symptoms of PFD; (3) impact on QOL/daily life; (4) impact on performance; (5) impact on emotions. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this review suggest a need to further explore the experiences of PFD among elite female athletes and it is suggested that future research should adopt qualitative methods or incorporate a qualitative component.

Abstract
RESUMO O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a prevalência, o conhecimento e os fatores associados à incontinência urinária (IU) em mulheres estudantes de um curso de fisioterapia, bem como sua qualidade de vida. Foi aplicada uma ficha de avaliação, o International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire - Short Form (ICIQ-SF) e um questionário de conhecimento sobre a musculatura do assoalho pélvico (MAP) e a ocorrência de IU, baseado em estudo tipo conhecimento, atitude e prática (CAP). Das 248 estudantes do curso, 170 (69%) participaram do estudo. Pela ficha de avaliação, 111 (65%) relataram perda urinária. De acordo com o ICIQ-SF, 63 participantes (37%) são incontinentes, sendo que 41 (65%) dessas apresentam IU de esforço, apresentando pequena perda e com frequência de uma vez na semana ou menos, com baixo impacto na sua qualidade de vida. A maioria das participantes que relataram ter dor na relação sexual (59%) e alguns sintomas uroginecológicos e intestinais, como esforço ao urinar (92%), jato interrompido (75%), incômodo na região vaginal (73%), constipação (53%), esforço ao defecar (53%) e esvaziamento intestinal incompleto (70%), apresentou queixa de IU. Todas as que usam protetor (100%) e procuraram atendimento médico (100%) eram incontinentes. O uso de anticoncepcional foi maior em mulheres sem perda urinária (84%). O conhecimento sobre a MAP e a IU foi adquirido gradualmente com o avançar do curso. Esse resultado sugere que as mulheres que não cursam Fisioterapia não têm domínio do assunto, sendo necessário disseminar o conhecimento sobre a IU e a atuação da fisioterapia.

Out of 248 students, 170 (69%) participated in our study. According to our evaluation form, 111 women (65%) reported urinary loss at some point in their lives. According to ICIQ-SF criteria, 63 (37%) women were incontinent, 41 (65%) suffered from strain urinary incontinence, showing small urinary losses once per week or less, which slightly impacted their quality of life. Most women who have pain during sexual intercourse (59%) and some urogynecological and intestinal symptom, such as straining (92%), intermittent urination (75%), nausea (73%), constipation (53%), excessive effort (53%), and incomplete outlet (70%) also suffered from UI. All women who used pads (100%) and sought medical care (100%) were incontinent. The use of contraceptive was higher among women without UI (84%). Participants built their knowledge on PFM and UI as the course progressed. These results suggest that women who attend undergraduate courses outside physical therapy have limited knowledge about the subject. We find it necessary to spread knowledge about UI and the importance of physical therapy to prevent and treat UI.

Prevalence and factors associated with urinary incontinence in females with cystic fibrosis: An Italian single-center cross-sectional analysis. Pediatr Pulmonol 2022; 57:132-141. Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) are deemed to have a higher risk of developing urinary incontinence (UI), likely due to repeated increasing pressure on the pelvic floor. We aimed to determine the prevalence of female UI in a large CF referral center, and to assess the association between UI and severity of CF disease. METHODS We consecutively recruited female patients regularly attending our CF center, aged ≥6 years and with a confirmed diagnosis of CF. Prevalence, severity, and impact of UI were assessed by administering two validated questionnaires. Relationship between variables was evaluated by means of multiple correspondence analysis, whereas a logistic model was fitted to capture the statistical association between UI and independent variables. RESULTS UI was present in 51/153 (33%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 26%-41%) females. Among children and adolescents, the prevalence was 12/82 (15%, 95% CI: 8%-25%) whereas among adults was 39/71 (55%, 95% CI: 43%-67%). The only explanatory variable associated with UI was age, with children presenting the lowest risk (odds ratio, 0.32; 95% CI: 0.05-0.93). Females presenting low or high nutritional status show higher profile risk of having UI. CONCLUSIONS Stress UI is a common complication in females with CF since childhood. Although it frequently occurs in older patients with a more severe phenotype, much attention should be paid to adults and to their nutritional status.

Abstract
Urinary incontinence (UI) is described as unintentional voiding of urine that is usually seen in post-partum and post-menopausal women due to the weakening of pelvic floor muscles (PFM). Recent studies have shown an increase in the prevalence of stress urinary incontinence (SUI) among young nulliparous female athletes. The association between UI and high-impact physical activity is due to increased intra-abdominal pressure during high-impact sports exceeding intra-urethral pressure. Usually, the levator ani muscle (LAM) helps in urethral closure. However, weakening or injury of LAM can reduce the pelvic support and cause UI in young female athletes. This study aims to assess the prevalence of SUI among young nulliparous athletes and also explore the association between SUI and athletic sports in young females. We searched PubMed and Google Scholar as databases to find specific articles about the topic. After the inclusion and exclusion criteria were applied, 52 articles were selected for this review. It is found that there is an increased UI prevalence, mainly SUI, among young nulliparous female athletes, especially in volleyball players and long-distance runners. Nulliparous athletes involved in high-impact exercises were found to have an increased cross-sectional area of LAM and puborectalis muscle width. SUI is usually under-reported and underdiagnosed due to lack of knowledge and unawareness, which can negatively affect the personal and social life of young females. PFM training is considered the first line of therapy among nulliparous athletes. However, it is unclear whether the high-impact effects of sports cause UI through PFM fatigue or PFM damage. More research is needed to better understand this effect.

Abstract
This review aimed to synthesize the most up-to-date evidence regarding the prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) among adolescent female athletes. We conducted a systematic review of studies regarding UI in female athletes less than 19 years of age. This review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRIMSA). The electronic databases of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Scopus, and Web of Science (WOS) were searched between October and November 2020. After blinded peer evaluation, a total of 215 studies were identified and nine were included. Risk of bias was assessed using the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) checklist. This review identified a prevalence of UI in adolescent female athletes between 18% to 80% with an average of 48.58%. The most prevalent sports were trampolining followed by rope skipping. The prevalence of UI among adolescent female athletes practicing impact sports was significantly prevalent. There is a need for further research, education, and targeted interventions for adolescent female athletes with UI.

Abstract
The role of platelets in hemostasis and thrombosis has long been recognized, recently their contribution to immunological and inflammatory processes is emerging. Platelets could be the missing link between cardiovascular disease, chronic stress and depressive symptoms. Both physical and mental stressors cause platelet activation reflected by changes in platelet bioactivity and aggregation. Here we evaluate the proinflammatory platelet response to acute and chronic mental stress. In a prospective study design an acute mental stress test was administered to 55 healthy male participants once without and once in the presence of chronic mental stress. Blood was collected prior to and at three time points following an acute mental stress test (0, 30, 60 min). Platelet proinflammatory activation markers, were assessed using FACS analysis and aggregability was measured in response to ADP or epinephrine using PFA-100. A linear mixed model was used for analysis. Chronic mental stress lead to a significant increase in state anxiety (p < 0.001), depressive symptoms (p = 0.045) and perceived stress (p = 0.001). The factor “chronic mental stress” was significantly associated with increased numbers of CD63+ platelets (p = 0.009). The factor “acute mental stress” was associated with alterations in CD62P+ platelets (p < 0.001), CD63+ platelets (p = 0.011), PAC-1+ platelets (p < 0.001) as well as platelet leucocyte aggregates (p = 0.019). The recovery of CD62P function following the acute mental stress exposure was significantly impaired by chronic stress (p = 0.023). Aggregation was affected by chronic and acute mental stress. In conclusion, mental stress is linked to an increased and prolonged proinflammatory platelet bioactivity. This proinflammatory and immunomodulatory stimuli could help to explain the link between mental and somatic disorders. Graphical Abstract ![]()

Abstract
Urinary incontinence is an involuntary urination (leakage of urine). About 200 million people suffer from this condition, and 60% of cases are concealed and untreated because of shame. It is estimated that an increasing number of young women and women of menopausal age will suffer from urinary incontinence. This disease occurs during the perinatal, perimenopausal period, as a result of brain damage or an unhealthy lifestyle. There are four main types of urinary incontinence: stress, urge, overflow and mixed form. Treatment is adapted to the severity of disease, its type and includes physiotherapeutic treatment (kinesiotherapy, physiotherapy, massage), pharmacological, psychological and surgical treatment. In recent years, growing interest has been observed in the noninvasive biofeedback method. The patient learns to contract the weakened pelvic floor muscles, constantly monitoring progress in treatment. She is also motivated by visual and auditory stimuli. Growing evidence confirms the effectiveness of this method, which to a large extent eliminates urinary incontinence. Nevertheless, attention should also be paid to prevention, which reduces the risk of involuntary leakage of urine.

Abstract
More women participate in sports than ever before and the proportion of women athletes at the Olympic Games is nearly 50%. The pelvic floor in women may be the only area of the body where the positive effect of physical activity has been questioned. The aim of this narrative review is to present two widely held opposing hypotheses on the effect of general exercise on the pelvic floor and to discuss the evidence for each. Hypothesis 1: by strengthening the pelvic floor muscles (PFM) and decreasing the levator hiatus, exercise decreases the risk of urinary incontinence, anal incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, but negatively affects the ease and safety of childbirth. Hypothesis 2: by overloading and stretching the PFM, exercise not only increases the risk of these disorders, but also makes labor and childbirth easier, as the PFM do not obstruct the exit of the fetus. Key findings of this review endorse aspects of both hypotheses. Exercising women generally have similar or stronger PFM strength and larger levator ani muscles than non-exercising women, but this does not seem to have a greater risk of obstructed labor or childbirth. Additionally, women that specifically train their PFM while pregnant are not more likely to have outcomes associated with obstructed labor. Mild-to-moderate physical activity, such as walking, decreases the risk of urinary incontinence but female athletes are about three times more likely to have urinary incontinence compared to controls. There is some evidence that strenuous exercise may cause and worsen pelvic organ prolapse, but data are inconsistent. Both intra-abdominal pressure associated with exercise and PFM strength vary between activities and between women; thus the threshold for optimal or negative effects on the pelvic floor almost certainly differs from person to person. Our review highlights many knowledge gaps that need to be understood to understand the full effects of strenuous and non-strenuous activities on pelvic floor health.

Abstract
Urinary incontinence (UI) is common among exercising women, but no studies have been found in rhythmic gymnasts. The aims of the present study were to investigate the prevalence and risk factors for UI in rhythmic gymnasts and the impact of UI on performance. This was a cross‐sectional study including all rhythmic gymnasts competing at the highest national and international level in Norway. One hundred and thirty‐three gymnasts from 22 sports clubs were invited to participate. Background data and possible risk factors were collected via electronic questionnaires. UI was assessed by Urinary Incontinence short form (ICIQ‐UI SF). The "Triad‐specific self‐report questionnaire" was applied to assess the female athlete triad. Joint mobility was assessed by Beighton score. Logistic regression analysis was used to assess possible risk factors. One hundred and seven nulliparous rhythmic gymnasts (80.5% response rate) from 21 sports clubs, with mean age of 14.5 (SD 1.6) years, participated in the study. Thirty‐four (31.8%) reported UI with 21 (61.8%), 3 (8.8%), 6 (17.6%), and 4 (11.8%) reporting stress, urgency, mixed urinary incontinence, and leakage for no obvious reason, respectively. BMI, hypermobility, menarche, disordered eating, and hours of training were not found to be risk factors for stress urinary incontinence. Twenty‐four gymnasts with UI (70.6%) reported incontinence to influence sports performance; 10 (29.4%) reported to be afraid of visible leakage and 5 (14.7%) that the leakage would happen again. Seventy‐four (69.1%) had never heard about the pelvic floor. In conclusion, UI is common in rhythmic gymnasts and may influence sports performance.

Abstract
Purpose of Review This review aims to discuss the current literature addressing associations between physical activity and stress urinary incontinence in women. Recent Findings Multiple cross-sectional studies utilize survey questionnaires to determine prevalence of stress urinary incontinence, impact of various types and intensities of physical activity on stress urinary incontinence, and explain differences in urinary symptoms among active women. Summary Although there is evidence for increased rates of stress incontinence among women who are physically active, pathophysiology is not fully understood and there is a need for additional research exploring changes to the pelvic floor during exercise. Future research focusing on the mechanism in which physical activity contributes to urinary symptoms can guide development of primary preventions for stress urinary incontinence.
