Abstract
PURPOSE Photo methods such as photo-elicitation and photovoice have traditionally been implemented as knowledge-generation techniques; however, they have also been conceptualized as tools for community impact and as interventions in and of themselves. We performed a scoping review to document how photo methods have been used in studies of cancer, to describe participant populations, and to identify opportunities for future directions for the use of photo methods in cancer. METHODS An a priori search strategy was implemented across health-related databases with the following inclusion criteria: (1) study participants were diagnosed with cancer and/or were caregivers of those with cancer; (2) study participants were asked to take and/or respond to photographs as part of the study protocol; (3) articles were published in peer-reviewed journals; (4) articles were written in English. RESULTS Eighty non-duplicative articles were identified; of these, 30 articles describing 24 individual studies were included for review. All but one (95.8%) of the studies utilized photovoice solely as a knowledge-generation technique without participant outcome measurement or analysis. Across all included studies, participants were largely women with breast cancer; other demographic and cancer-related variables (e.g., race and cancer stage) were not consistently reported. Caregivers were included in 37.5% of studies. CONCLUSION Photo methods are most frequently used in order to capture qualitative data in cancer populations; however, there are missed opportunities in their lack of use for intervention and systemic change. In addition, inconsistent reporting of demographics and cancer characteristics limits our ability to synthesize these data across studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Returning to school can be challenging for children and adolescents with cancer who have been absent for a long time. As there is little known about the return to school experience of children and adolescents with cancer, this meta-synthesis aimed to describe the experiences of children and adolescent cancer patients as they return to school. METHODS Seven English databases and three Chinese databases were searched from inception to March 14, 2023. The Joanna Briggs Institute Qualitative Assessment and Review Instrument (JBI-QARI) was used to appraise study quality. Data were synthesized using the Thomas and Harden thematic and content analysis method. RESULTS Twelve qualitative studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed into meta-synthesis. Data synthesis led to constructing four analytical themes and twelve sub-themes. The four major themes constructed were:benefits to school re-entry, barriers to school re-entry, motivators to school re-entry and the adaptation process after returning to school. CONCLUSION Children and adolescents with cancer were willing to return to education and can adapt to school life over time. But they were faced with challenges, including physical, psychological, and social barriers. Appropriate measures need to be taken to reduce those barriers. IMPLICATIONS TO PRACTICE Findings can be used to inform future research and interventions to support a successful return to education for children and adolescents with cancer. Healthcare providers should address the needs of children and adolescents at different stages and actively work with schools, hospitals and families to help childhood cancer survivors successfully return to school.

Abstract
PURPOSE Young cancer survivors ("young survivors") may need to disclose their cancer experiences to reintegrate into society. In such cases, the recognition of social support through the disclosure of cancer experiences may prevent potential social disadvantages. This review aimed to describe the motivations, strategies and outcomes, and benefits and disadvantages of disclosure in young survivors based on the social-ecological model (SEM) to identify the support survivors need when disclosing their cancer experiences. METHODS Using the integrated review methodology, we systematically searched six databases in English and Japanese as well as searched the reference lists of the selected studies. The themes identified via thematic analysis were categorized within the SEM levels. RESULTS This review analyzed 14 studies and identified four themes, including "Motivation for Cancer Disclosure," "Barriers to Cancer Disclosure," "Consequences of Cancer Disclosure: Benefits," and "Consequences of Cancer Disclosure: Disadvantages." Motivations for young survivors to disclose their cancer involved post-cancer differences, perceptions, relationships, and social context. In navigating barriers, including self-stigma, peer exclusion, and discrimination, they employed strategies such as reassurance and information limitation. Tailored disclosure strategies at each SEM level offered social and psychological benefits, however, disadvantages, including stress, vulnerability, employment issues, and limited insurance coverage, were experienced by young survivors due to cancer disclosure. CONCLUSIONS To optimize the benefits of cancer disclosure for young survivors, addressing psychological burdens, enhancing disclosure skills, offering familial psychological support, and fostering public awareness of cancer are essential.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The INSCHOOL project aimed to understand the school experiences and unmet needs of young people across a diversity of long-term physical health conditions. METHODS Young people aged 11-18 years, in mainstream secondary school in the United Kingdom, with one of 11 physical health conditions were invited to unique participant-driven interviews, focus groups, or written activities. Creative preparation activities were provided to give participants increased control over the data collection and prioritize their voices. A needs analysis, in combination with participatory analysis sessions with young people, identified the common needs of participants in relation to their school lives. RESULTS Eighty-nine young people participated from April 2022 to 2023. Analysis of their transcripts defined six common needs across all the health conditions: Need to safely manage my health at school; need for a flexible education pathway; need to be acknowledged and listened to in the right way; need to be included in and supported by the school community; need to build toward my future; need to develop attitudes and approaches to help me cope in school. CONCLUSIONS This study has generated new, actionable knowledge by identifying six major needs that young people have in relation to the intersection of their health condition and their school life. This paper shows that a commonalities approach to research and policy development is warranted given the similarities in experiences and needs. The common needs identified in the INSCHOOL project highlight six areas where future interventions could be targeted to begin making meaningful changes for all young people with long-term health conditions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Assess the existing evidence base in order to synthesise the current qualitative findings for the impact of chronic health conditions on the school lives of young people. DESIGN Qualitative evidence synthesis using thematic synthesis. PATIENTS Young people aged 11-18 years with a chronic health condition from one of the following groups: oncology, cystic fibrosis, diabetes, asthma, rheumatology, neuromuscular, colorectal, chronic pain, allergies and dermatology. OUTCOME MEASURE Qualitative findings and discussions present in included studies formed the data for the thematic synthesis. RESULTS From a search identifying 19 311 records, a sample of 35 papers were included. The included papers represented 15 countries and primarily employed interviews as part of data collection. Thematic synthesis resulted in six themes: 'keeping up/catching up/missing out/looking forward'; 'identity'; 'relationship with peers'; 'normality and difference'; 'autonomy'; 'relationships with staff'. CONCLUSIONS Thematic synthesis highlighted the commonalities, rather than divergence, of issues for young people across different chronic conditions. Policies need to be based on the experiences of the people they aim to provide for, and while attendance and attainment remain important, there is clearly more that needs to be considered when gathering data, designing interventions and developing policies to support this population. It may also be advisable for clinical professionals to include the broader psychosocial aspects of school life in discussions and plans to support young people with long-term conditions. Abstract
Improved survival rates of pediatric oncology patients give them the opportunity to return to school. This can present a significant challenge, as returning students often become vulnerable to peer rejection. The objective of this double-arm descriptive study was to establish a framework from which to optimize a school reintegration intervention for the peers of pediatric oncology patients. Ultimately, the study aimed to promote increased knowledge, acceptance by peers, and a smooth transition back to school for childhood cancer survivors. We utilized age-appropriate surveys to evaluate the knowledge and concerns of 3rd to 8th-grade students in Michigan regarding friends with cancer and to identify concerns of pediatric oncology patients at an academic medical center regarding return to school during or after cancer treatment. The majority of 3rd to 8th-grade students correctly answered questions related to etiology, prognosis, side effects, and treatment of cancer. Respondents in 3rd to 5th grade were significantly more likely than 6th to 8th graders to endorse the perception that cancer is contagious (P = 0.0036). Fewer students who had a friend with cancer were worried that their friend might die, compared to those who did not have a friend with cancer (3rd to 5th graders [P = 0.0002]; 6th to 8th graders [P = < 0.0001]). Results suggest that peer intervention may be optimized via customization based upon student concerns rather than focusing on cancer education. Additionally, personalized interventions and assistance for patients should strive to reduce stigma and differentiation from other students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite the increasing number of studies using photo-elicitation for data collection in qualitative research, there is a need to further explore its use among families of children and adolescents living with chronic illness. OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to discuss methodological and pragmatic considerations about the use of photo-elicitation interviews (PEIs) for data collection with families of children and adolescents living with chronic illness. METHODS We discussed methodological aspects of using PEIs as reported in publications. A search of the literature was carried out to identify articles presenting information on methodological aspects of the use of PEIs in qualitative data collection, regardless of age group. In pursuit of complementing the evidence with pragmatic considerations of using PEIs, we illustrate with an example of a recent qualitative study of our own that aimed to understand the narratives about hope of families of children and adolescents living with chronic illness. RESULTS We synthesized common aspects that need to be considered when using PEIs with different populations: ethical issues, cameras, guidance, and interviews. We also presented our experience of using the PEI technique to collect data from families. Because of our experience, we denominate our method as the "family photo-elicitation interview" (FPEI). Our method goes beyond the PEI technique because it integrates aspects of family nursing theories when conducting interviews with families. FPEIs strengthen family interaction and allow family members to share their perspectives. DISCUSSION We present a new perspective of PEIs-the FPEI-in the pediatric context. Previous studies have not addressed considerations about using PEIs for families. We hope our results assist novice researchers in planning and implementing FPEIs in qualitative research. We recommend that researchers explore the use of FPEIs in other contexts, such as geriatrics or palliative care.

Abstract
AIMS To critically review and synthesize empirical studies on childhood cancer survivors' experiences and needs on returning to school after treatment. DESIGN A mixed-method systematic review. DATA SOURCES A search of CINAHL, PsycINFO, EMBASE, MEDLINE, ERIC and Web of Science was conducted for studies published in English, Spanish and Portuguese languages between January 2010 and May 2020. REVIEW METHODS Twenty-one studies were eligible for inclusion (13 qualitative studies, 6 quantitative and 2 mixed-method studies). The quality of the studies was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme and the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. Findings were synthesized using data-based convergent synthesis design. RESULTS Findings were synthesized under four themes: academic continuity and school re-entry; physical and psychological well-being; school life and participation and stakeholders' responses to childhood cancer. Findings indicated that prolonged/recurring absences, physical and mental changes, personal/health factors impacted children's social participation, peer relationships and school re-integration. Factors which contributed to a more positive experience included maintaining contact with peers and teachers throughout treatment, peer relationships, understanding and support from school community. Sharing information about cancer was an ongoing challenging issue for children, that needed to be handled sensitively. CONCLUSION It is evident that re-entry to school was very challenging for most children due to treatment side effects, prolonged absences, disrupted peer relationships, lack of preparation and lack of communication between schools, families and healthcare professionals. IMPACT Despite the growing number of childhood cancer survivors worldwide, there is a deficit of studies about children's re-entry experiences and educational needs. This review illustrates the considerable challenges that children face on school re-entry and the critical importance of better care, support and collaboration from healthcare professionals, parents and school personnel. Nurses could help by raising awareness and leading on preparation for school re-entry.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cancer diagnoses pose challenges to adolescents' and young adults' (AYA) physical, mental, and emotional health, and developmental tasks. In order for AYAs, caregivers, clinicians, and other collaborators to optimize health outcomes (coproduction of health), understanding what living well means for AYAs who have experienced cancer is necessary. The objective was to develop an empirical definition of "living well" for AYAs who have experienced cancer to broadly understand AYA values and priorities. This definition may ultimately guide future conversations between caregivers and AYAs, eliciting thorough, personal definitions of living well from individual AYAs. Such conversations may enhance AYA participation in coproducing their health. PROCEDURE Qualitative analysis using a phenomenological approach of N = 30 structured Respecting Choices interviews conducted with AYAs (14-21 years; mean 84.2 [SD 69] months postcancer diagnosis with 21% on active treatment) from four tertiary pediatric hospitals in the context of a primary study of a pediatric advance care planning intervention trial. RESULTS AYAs who have experienced cancer conceptualized "living well" as maintaining physical, mental, and emotional health, as well as engaging in purposeful, age-appropriate activities with people important to them. Living well had three components: living mindfully, living an identity as a healthy AYA, and spending time with friends and family. CONCLUSIONS Conversations with AYAs who have experienced cancer elicited rich, complex concepts of "living well." Provider initiation of discussions about living well may facilitate personalized goals of care conversations. This study may serve as the basis to design and prototype future clinical interventions to enhance AYA engagement.

Abstract
Abstract
Background
Adolescents diagnosed with cancer experience unique psychosocial concerns that persist beyond treatment completion into longer-term survivorship. Camp-based, group Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) programs are a potential model for providing evidence-informed psychological and peer support to adolescent cancer survivors.
Objective
This paper describes the development and exploration of the feasibility and acceptability of such a program, Places You’ll Go. This manualised program incorporates five 90-min group ACT sessions within a 3-day camp, teaching ACT strategies in the context of psychosocial impacts of cancer.
Method
Eight facilitators and twenty-eight Australian adolescent cancer survivors (68% female; age range 12–17 years, M = 15.4 years) participated in the program and evaluation. Feasibility was assessed using facilitator-reported session duration, attendance, quality and content fidelity; facilitators also completed interviews after program completion. Young people completed surveys on program acceptability at the end of each session and at program completion.
Results
All planned sessions were delivered, with 97% attendance and high fidelity in manualised program delivery. All young people were mostly or very satisfied and would recommend the program to another cancer survivor. Opportunities for peer connection and skill development contributed to perceived program acceptability.
Conclusions
The Places You’ll Go program was acceptable and feasible to deliver. It is a promising community-based model for promoting peer support and well-being in adolescent cancer survivors, indicating the potential of ACT-based approaches for this population. Further work is underway to evaluate whether the program improves psychosocial wellbeing among participants, and if this is linked to the therapeutic mechanisms underpinning ACT.
