Abstract
AIM Due to conventional endocrinological methods, there is presently no shared work available, and no therapeutic options have been demonstrated in oral cancer (OC) and periodontal disease (PD), type 2 diabetes (T2D), and obese patients. The aim of this study is to determine the similar molecular pathways and potential therapeutic targets in PD, OC, T2D, and obesity that may be used to anticipate the progression of the disease. METHODS Four Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) microarray datasets (GSE29221, GSE15773, GSE16134, and GSE13601) are used for finding differentially expressed genes (DEGs) for T2D, obese, and PD patients with OC in order to explore comparable pathways and therapeutic medications. Gene ontology (GO) and pathway analysis were used to investigate the functional annotations of the genes. The hub genes were then identified using protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks, and the most significant PPI components were evaluated using a clustering approach. RESULTS These three gene expression-based datasets yielded a total of seven common DEGs. According to the GO annotation, the majority of the DEGs were connected with the microtubule cytoskeleton structure involved in mitosis. The KEGG pathways revealed that the concordant DEGs are connected to the cell cycle and progesterone-mediated oocyte maturation. Based on topological analysis of the PPI network, major hub genes (CCNB1, BUB1, TTK, PLAT, and AHNAK) and notable modules were revealed. This work additionally identified the connection of TF genes and miRNAs with common DEGs, as well as TF activity. CONCLUSION Predictive drug analysis yielded concordant drug compounds involved with T2D, OC, PD, and obesity disorder, which might be beneficial for examining the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of metabolic disorders and Oral cancer.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With a significant increase in both incidence and mortality, oral cancer-particularly oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC)-is one of the main causes of death in developing countries. Even though there is evidence of advances in surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy, the overall survival rate for patients with OSCC has improved, but by a small percentage. This may be due, on the one hand, to the fact that the disease is diagnosed when it is at a too-advanced stage, when metastases are already present. METHODS This review explores the therapeutic potential of natural herbal products and their use as adjuvant therapies in the treatment of oral cancer from online sources in databases (PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Research Gate, Scopus, Elsevier). RESULTS Even if classic therapies are known to be effective, they often produce many serious side effects and can create resistance. Certain natural plant compounds may offer a complementary approach by inducing apoptosis, suppressing tumor growth, and improving chemotherapy effectiveness. The integration of these compounds with conventional treatments to obtain remarkable synergistic effects represents a major point of interest to many authors. This review highlights the study of molecular mechanisms and their efficiency in in vitro and in vivo models, as well as the strategic ways in which drugs can be administered to optimize their use in real contexts. CONCLUSIONS This review may have a significant impact on the oncology community, creating new inspirations for the development of more effective, safer cancer therapies with less toxic potential.

Abstract
Oral cancer is a global health concern, particularly because of its aggressive tissue invasion and metastases, holding 16th position on occurrence among all carcinoma worldwide. The aberrated transcription factor NF-κB1 influences development and spread of oral cancer, making it a potential therapeutic target. This study investigated the therapeutic potential of a few natural compounds from Artocarpus heterophyllus, Tinospora cordifolia, and Glycosmis pentaphylla in the treatment of oral cancer. Two FDA-approved drugs (5-fluorouracil, Docetaxel) and 16 natural compounds, including Artocarpin, Artocarpanone, Cycloartocarpin from Artocarpus heterophyllus; Berberine, Hydrastine, Magnoflorine, Palmatine Chloride, Tetrahydropalmatine from Tinospora cordifolia; and 5-Hydroxyarborinine, 5-Hydroxynoracronycine, 1-Hydroxy-3-methoxy-10-methyl-9-acridone, Des-N-methylacronycine, Des-N-methylnoracronycine, Kokusagenine, Noracronycin, Skimmianine from Glycosmis pentaphylla were examined using in-silico techniques. Among the 16 natural compounds studied, Hydrastine shown the highest binding energy (-6.87 kcal/mol) against NF-κB1, surpassing all other drugs, including the standards 5-fluorouracil (-4.04 kcal/mol) and docetaxel (-2.4 kcal/mol). Further molecular dynamics simulations and in-vitro experiments verified Hydrastine's exceptional anti-cancer activity. The results of in-vitro were well-aligned with the findings of in-silico, revealing considerable cytotoxicity, apoptosis induction, and cell cycle arrest. The findings revealed natural compounds' potential as safer, more effective alternatives to current cancer therapeutics, opening up new avenues for oral cancer treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Various medical conditions and the drugs used to treat them have been shown to impede or complicate dental implant surgery. It is crucial to carefully monitor the medical status and potential post-operative complications of patients with systemic diseases, particularly elderly patients, to minimize the risk of health complications that may arise. AIM The purpose of this study was to review the existing evidence on the viability of dental implants in patients with systemic diseases and to provide practical recommendations to achieve the best possible results in the corresponding patient population. METHODS The information for our study was compiled using data from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar databases and searched separately for each systemic disease included in our work until October 2023. An additional manual search was also performed to increase the search sensitivity. Only English-language publications were included and assessed according to titles, abstracts and full texts. RESULTS In total, 6784 studies were found. After checking for duplicates and full-text availability, screening for the inclusion criteria and manually searching reference lists, 570 articles remained to be considered in this study. CONCLUSION In treating patients with systemic conditions, the cost-benefit analysis should consider the patient's quality of life and expected lifespan. The success of dental implants depends heavily on ensuring appropriate maintenance therapy, ideal oral hygiene standards, no smoking and avoiding other risk factors. Indications and contraindications for dental implants in cases of systemic diseases are yet to be more understood; broader and hardcore research needs to be done for a guideline foundation.

Abstract
Introduction The most effective method of assessing sarcopenia has yet to be determined, whether by single muscle or by whole muscle segmentation. The purpose of this study was to compare the prognostic value of these two methods using computed tomography (CT) images in patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Materials and methods Sex- and age-adjusted Cox proportional hazards models were employed for each parameter of sarcopenia related to overall survival, disease-free survival, and disease-specific survival. Harrell's concordance index was calculated for each model to assess discriminatory power. Results In this study including 165 patients, a significant correlation was found between the CT-based assessment of individual muscles and their cross-sectional area. Single muscle assessments showed slightly higher discriminatory power in survival outcomes compared to whole muscle assessments, but the difference was not statistically significant, as indicated by overlapping confidence intervals for the C-index between assessments. To further validate our measurements, we classified patients into two groups based on intramuscular adipose tissue content (P-IMAC) of the spinous process muscle. Analysis showed that the higher the P-IMAC value, the poorer the survival outcome. Conclusion Our findings indicate a slight advantage of single-muscle over whole-muscle assessment in prognostic evaluation, but the difference between the two methods is not conclusive. Both assessment methods provide valuable prognostic information for patients with OSCC, and further studies involving larger, independent cohorts are needed to clarify the potential advantage of one method over the other in the prognostic assessment of sarcopenia in OSCC.

Abstract
Zinc finger protein 217 (ZNF217) is one of the well-researched members of the Krüppel-like factor transcription factor family. ZNF217 possesses a characteristic structure of zinc finger motifs and plays a crucial role in regulating the biological activities of cells. Recent findings have revealed that ZNF217 is strongly associated with multiple aspects of cancer progression, impacting patient prognosis. Notably, ZNF217 is subject to regulation by non-coding RNAs, suggesting the potential for targeted manipulation of such RNAs as a robust therapeutic avenue for managing cancer in the future. The main purpose of this article is to provide a detailed examination of the role of ZNF217 in human malignant tumors and the regulation of its expression, and to offer new perspectives for cancer treatment.

Abstract
The oral microbiome potentially wields significant influence in the development of cancer. Within the human oral cavity, an impressive diversity of more than 700 bacterial species resides, making it the second most varied microbiome in the body. This finely balanced oral microbiome ecosystem is vital for sustaining oral health. However, disruptions in this equilibrium, often brought about by dietary habits and inadequate oral hygiene, can result in various oral ailments like periodontitis, cavities, gingivitis, and even oral cancer. There is compelling evidence that the oral microbiome is linked to several types of cancer, including oral, pancreatic, colorectal, lung, gastric, and head and neck cancers. This review discussed the critical connections between cancer and members of the human oral microbiota. Extensive searches were conducted across the Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed databases to provide an up-to-date overview of our understanding of the oral microbiota's role in various human cancers. By understanding the possible microbial origins of carcinogenesis, healthcare professionals can diagnose neoplastic diseases earlier and design treatments accordingly.

Abstract
New methods of early detection and risk assessment have been studied aiming to predict the prognosis of patients and directing a specialized treatment of the oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (OTSCC). In this context, several molecular biomarkers have been investigated for this purpose, and, among them, the heat shock protein 27 (HSP27) can be named. The study aimed to analyze whether heat shock protein 27 (HSP27) exerts any influence on OTSCC, correlating its immunoexpression with clinicopathological parameters, and patient survival. The sample comprised 55 OTSCC cases and 20 normal oral mucosa specimens. The malignancy grading systems proposed by the WHO in 2005, Brandwein-Gensler et al., and Almangush et al. were applied in a histomorphological study. HSP27 expressions were evaluated through the Immunoreactivity Score System (IRS). Significant values were considered at p <0.05 for all statistical tests. Higher IRS results were observed for normal oral mucosa specimens when compared to OTSCC cases (p <0.001). No significant associations between HSP27 immunostaining, the analyzed clinicopathological parameters and patient survival were observed. The results of the present study indicate lower HSP27 expression in OTSCC cases compared to normal oral mucosa specimens. Thus, HSP27 expression does not seem to influence patient prognosis.

Abstract
Cancer can be considered one of the most threatening diseases to human health, and immunotherapy, especially T-cell immunotherapy, is the most promising treatment for cancers. Diet therapy is widely concerned in cancer because of its safety and fewer side effects. Many studies have shown that both the function of T cells and the progression of cancer can be affected by nutrients in the diet. In fact, it is challenging for T cells to infiltrate and eliminate cancer cells in tumor microenvironment, because of the harsh metabolic condition. The intake of different nutrients has a great influence on the proliferation, activation, differentiation and exhaustion of T cells. In this review, we summarize the effects of typical amino acids, lipids, carbohydrates and other nutritional factors on T cell functions and provide future perspectives for dietary treatment of cancer based on modifications of T cell functions.

Abstract
Several resistance mechanisms are involved in dental caries, including oral biofilms. An accumulation of bacteria on the surface of teeth is called plaque. Periodontitis and gingivitis are caused by dental plaque. In this review article, we aimed to review the studies associated with the application of photodynamic therapy (PDT) to prevent and treat various microbial biofilm-caused oral diseases in recent decades. There are several studies published in PubMed that have described antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (APDT) effects on microorganisms. Several in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated the potential of APDT for treating endodontic, periodontal, and mucosal infections caused by bacteria as biofilms. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are activated in the presence of oxygen by integrating a nontoxic photosensitizer (PS) with appropriate wavelength visible light. By causing irreversible damage to microorganisms, ROS induces some biological and photochemical events. Testing several wavelengths has been conducted to identify potential PS for APDT. A standard protocol is not yet available, and the current review summarizes findings from dental studies on APDT.

Abstract
One of the most prevalent cancers is oral squamous cell carcinoma, and preventing mortality from this disease primarily depends on early detection. Clinicians will greatly benefit from automated diagnostic techniques that analyze a patient's histopathology images to identify abnormal oral lesions. A deep learning framework was designed with an intermediate layer between feature extraction layers and classification layers for classifying the histopathological images into two categories, namely, normal and oral squamous cell carcinoma. The intermediate layer is constructed using the proposed swarm intelligence technique called the Modified Gorilla Troops Optimizer. While there are many optimization algorithms used in the literature for feature selection, weight updating, and optimal parameter identification in deep learning models, this work focuses on using optimization algorithms as an intermediate layer to convert extracted features into features that are better suited for classification. Three datasets comprising 2784 normal and 3632 oral squamous cell carcinoma subjects are considered in this work. Three popular CNN architectures, namely, InceptionV2, MobileNetV3, and EfficientNetB3, are investigated as feature extraction layers. Two fully connected Neural Network layers, batch normalization, and dropout are used as classification layers. With the best accuracy of 0.89 among the examined feature extraction models, MobileNetV3 exhibits good performance. This accuracy is increased to 0.95 when the suggested Modified Gorilla Troops Optimizer is used as an intermediary layer.

Abstract
Drug resistance is a common cause of therapy failure in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). One approach to tackling it is by targeting fundamental cellular processes, such as translation. The eukaryotic translation initiation factor 2α (EIF2α) is a key player in canonical translation initiation and integrates diverse stress signals; when phosphorylated, it curbs global protein synthesis. This study evaluates EIF2α expression and phosphorylation in HNSCC. A small-molecule inhibitor of EIF2α dephosphorylation, salubrinal, was tested in vitro, followed by viability assays, flow cytometry, and immunoblot analyses. Patient-derived 3D tumor spheres (PD3DS) were cultured with salubrinal and their viability assessed. Lastly, salubrinal was evaluated with standard-of-care chemotherapeutics. Our analysis of RNA and proteomics data shows elevated EIF2α expression in HNSCC. Immunohistochemical staining reveals increasing EIF2α abundance from premalignant lesions to invasive and metastatic carcinoma. In immunoblots from intraoperative samples, EIF2α expression and steady-state phosphorylation are higher in HNSCC than in neighboring normal tissue. Inhibition of EIF2α dephosphorylation decreases HNSCC cell viability and clonogenic survival and impairs the G1/S transition. Salubrinal also decreases the viability of PD3DS and acts synergistically with cisplatin, 5-fluorouracil, bleomycin, and proteasome inhibitors. Our results indicate that pharmacological inhibition of EIF2α dephosphorylation is a potential therapeutic strategy for HNSCC.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD) are lesions associated with an increased risk of transformation (MT) into cancer. OBJECTIVE A study was made of the salivary levels of adenosine deaminase (ADA), ferritin (FRR) and total proteins (TP) in healthy individuals and in patients with oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMD), assessing the potential role of saliva as a diagnostic tool. METHODS A total of 91 subjects participated in the study, divided into two groups-59 patients with OPMD (oral leukoplakia or oral lichen planus) and 32 healthy controls-with measurements being made of salivary ADA, ferritin (FRR) and total proteins (TP). RESULTS There were no significant differences in salivary mean ADA between the OPMD group 0.85 ± 2.18 UI/I and the controls 0.71 ± 1.72 UI/I (p = 0.934), though the levels of both FRR mean OPMD, 12.66 ± 10.50 (µg/L), versus control, 7.19 ± 4.44 (p = 0.001), and TP, 23.41 ± 17, versus control, 14.15 ± 15.19, were significantly higher in the OPMD group (p = 0.001). Patients with oral lichen planus showed significant differences in terms of FRR (p = 0.009) and TP (p = 0.003). The ferritin in LPO with a cut-off point of 8.5C showed a sensitivity and specificity of 54.3% and 82.3, respectively. The area under the curve (AUC) was 0.69 (95% confidence interval (95% CI): 0.58-0.82; p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS Ferritin and total proteins may constitute potential salivary biomarkers for oral lichen planus, though further studies are still needed in this field. In addition, saliva testing is a reliable and noninvasive diagnostic tool and appears to be a reliable strategy offering an interesting alternative for the screening of large populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The bone defects cannot heal by themselves when their range exceeds the critical size defect (CSD). In clinical treatment, significant bone defects are often caused by trauma, developmental deformity, tumour resection and infection. OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of green synthesis of TiO2 from propolis extract/collagen/HA (Hydroxyapatite) scaffolds on bone regeneration in rats. METHODS Water uptake, biodegradability, porosity and biodegradation of the scaffolds were evaluated after they were synthesised using freeze-dry method. Cell viability by MTT assay was then evaluated. During the 4, 8 and 12 weeks following the scaffold implantation, the bone regeneration was evaluated using macroscopic and microscopic tests to determine the effectiveness of green synthesis of TiO2 from propolis extract/collagen/HA scaffolds. RESULTS Compared to the HA/Coll scaffold, ProTiO2 /HA/Coll scaffold was reduced porosity, water absorption and degradability porosity. Based on in vitro tests, both synthetic scaffolds induced cell growth and were less toxic and stimulated cell growth. Based on histopathological testing, the ProTiO2 /HA/Coll scaffolds formed high levels of bone during 12 weeks in comparison with HA/Coll and control group. CONCLUSIONS ProTiO2 /HA/Coll composite can be used in regenerative medicine, bone fillers and scaffolds. As a result, this research suggests that ProTiO2 /HA/Coll composites could be promising candidates for bone regeneration.

Abstract
Exemestane (EXE), an irreversible aromatase inhibitor, is employed as a therapy for hormone-dependent breast cancer. Several studies have also established the budding effects of genistein (GEN) in various types of cancer such as breast, prostate, as well as skin due to its feeble estrogenic and anti-estrogenic properties. Considering the promising benefits of GEN, it was combined with EXE to accomplish superior therapeutic efficiency with fewer side effects. The quantification of the exact concentration of EXE and GEN when delivered as a combination would be required for which HPLC method was developed and validated. For this purpose, the C18 ODS column having dimensions of 150 × 4.6 mm, 5 μm, using mobile phase A as methanol:water (35:15, v/v), with formic acid (0.01%), and B as acetonitrile (in the ratio of A:B--30:70 v/v) at a flow rate of 1 mL/min was commonly used. The Box-Behnken design was chosen as our experimental model, and the interactions among the independent and dependent variables were analyzed. Parameters like linearity, system suitability, specificity, precision (intra- and interday), robustness, ruggedness, LOD (limit of detection), and LOQ (limit of quantification) were selected for the validation of our proposed method. EXE and GEN were eluted individually at 245 and 270.5 nm, respectively, while both of the agents were determined simultaneously at 256 nm, showing retention time as 2.10 and 1.67 min, respectively, and the calibration plot was observed to be linear in the range of 5-110 μg/mL. Hence, the method that we developed and validated was found to be suitable for the identification of both the drugs simultaneously in combination and in our in-house-developed nanoformulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several osteotomies are required for orthognathic surgery to reposition the jaws correctly. This study aimed to evaluate whether Kinesiotaping can reduce swelling, pain, and trismus following orthognathic surgery of the facial skull. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present study consists of two phases. In the split-mouth phase, 16 skeletal class III patients underwent Bimax Orthognathic surgery, and Kinesiological tape (KT) was applied on one half of the face. In the prospective case-control phase, 30 patients were divided into two groups. Kinesio tape was applied on both sides of the face of the Kinesio group, and pressure dressing and ice therapy were used for the second group. The tape was parallel to the lower border of the mandible along its entire length, tangent to the labial commissure area on the studied side. The tape was placed in place for 5 days. Edema was evaluated by measuring the distance from the menton to the lower edge of the tragus. The maximum mouth-opening trismus was evaluated, and the VAS index was used to evaluate pain. RESULTS There was evidence of swelling reduction after KT; within the same study, differences between the left and right sides as well as for the same side were statistically significant (p < 0.001). As a result of tapping lymphatic Kinesio tape on the affected area, tension was reduced, and lymphatic circulation was restored. Blood and lymph microcirculation was improved, enabling the body to heal itself. CONCLUSION Kinesio tape reduced swelling after orthognathic surgery in a positive way. As a simple, non-traumatic, economical method, Kinesio taping seems promising.

Abstract
This study investigated the effect of postoperative deep sedation after oral cancer reconstructive surgery on the occurrence of early postoperative pneumonia and early postoperative delirium. We obtained medical records of 108 consecutive patients who underwent microvascular reconstructive surgery at Tsukuba University Hospital for oral cancer between January 2013 and December 2021. Forty-six of them woke soon after surgery. Ten of these forty-six patients were restless and required immediate sedation within 3 h after surgery. The comparison between sedation group and no sedation group revealed early postoperative pneumonia in the no sedation group; however, sedation was not related to early postoperative delirium. The preoperative albumin levels of patients with postoperative pneumonia were significantly different (p = 0.03) than those of patients without postoperative pneumonia. The performance status (p = 0.02), preoperative albumin level (p = 0.02), and age 75 years or older (p = 0.02) were significantly associated with postoperative delirium. Restless patients and those who could not be sedated experienced delirium and pneumonia. The risk of pneumonia was increased for patients who were difficult to sedate.

Abstract
A novel drug delivery system for the treatment of oral cancer was developed using a facile polydopamine (PDA)-based surface modification and a binding mechanism linking folic acid-targeting ligands. The system was able to achieve the following objectives: loading of chemotherapeutic agents, active targeting, pH responsiveness, and prolonged in vivo blood circulation. DOX-loaded polymeric nanoparticles (DOX/H20-PLA@PDA NPs) were functionalized with amino-poly (ethylene glycol)-folic acid (H2N-PEG-FA) after coating them with PDA to form the targeting combination, DOX/H20-PLA@PDA-PEG-FA NPs. The novel NPs exhibited drug delivery characteristics similar to DOX/H20-PLA@ PDA NPs. Meanwhile, the incorporated H2N-PEG-FA contributed to active targeting, as illustrated in cellular uptake assays and animal studies. In vitro cytotoxicity and in vivo anti-tumor studies have shown that the novel nanoplatforms exhibit extremely effective therapeutic effects. In conclusion, the multifunctional PDA-modified H20-PLA@PDA-PEG-FA NPs offer a promising chemotherapeutic strategy to improve the treatment of oral cancer.

Abstract
Immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) therapy can improve the survival of cancer patients with a high tumor mutation burden (TMB-H) or deficiency in DNA mismatch repair (dMMR) in their tumors. However, most cancer patients without TMB-H and dMMR do not benefit from ICB therapy. The inhibition of ATM can increase DNA damage and activate the interferon response, thus modulating the tumor immune microenvironment (TIME) and the efficacy of ICB therapy. In this study, we showed that ATM inhibition activated interferon signaling and induced interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) in cisplatin-resistant and parent cancer cells. The ISGs induced by ATM inhibition were correlated with survival in cancer patients who received ICB therapy. In oral cancer, high expressions of ISG15, IFI27, and OASL were associated with low expressions of ATM, the activation of inflamed immune pathways, and increased tumor-infiltrating scores of CD8+ T, natural killer, and dendritic cells. The high expressions of ISG15, IFI27, and OASL were also correlated with complete remission in patients with cervical cancer treated with cisplatin. These results suggest that ATM inhibition can induce the interferon response and inflamed TIME, which may benefit ICB therapy.

Abstract
The areca nut is a high-risk carcinogen for head and neck cancer (HNC) patients in Southeast Asia. The underlying molecular mechanism of areca nut-induced HNC remains unclear, especially regarding the role of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA). This study employed a systemic strategy to identify lncRNA signatures related to areca nut-induced HNC. In total, 84 cancer-related lncRNAs were identified. Using a PCR array method, 28 lncRNAs were identified as being dysregulated in HNC cells treated with areca nut (17 upregulated and 11 downregulated). Using bioinformatics analysis of The Cancer Genome Atlas Head-Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (TCGA-HNSC) dataset, 45 lncRNAs were differentially expressed in tumor tissues from HNC patients (39 over- and 6 under-expressions). The integrated evaluation showed 10 lncRNAs dysregulated by the areca nut and altered expression in patients, suggesting that these panel molecules participate in areca nut-induced HNC. Five oncogenic (LUCAT1, MIR31HG, UCA1, HIF1A-AS2, and SUMO1P3) and tumor-suppressive (LINC00312) lncRNAs were independently validated, and three key molecules were further examined. Pathway prediction revealed that LUCAT1, UCA1, and MIR31HG modulate multiple oncogenic mechanisms, including stress response and cellular motility. Clinical assessment showed that these lncRNAs exhibited biomarker potentials in diagnosis (area under the curve = 0.815 for LUCAT1) and a worse prognosis (both p < 0.05, survival analysis). Cellular studies further demonstrated that MIR31HG facilitates areca nut-induced cancer progression, as silencing this molecule attenuated arecoline-induced invasion ability in HNC cells. This study identified lncRNA signatures that play a role in areca nut-induced HNC. These molecules may be further applied in risk assessment, diagnosis, prognosis, and therapeutics for areca nut-associated malignancies.

Abstract
Head and neck cancers are malignant growths with high death rates, which makes the early diagnosis of the affected patients of utmost importance. Over 90% of oral cavity cancers come from squamous cells, and the tongue, oral cavity, and salivary glands are the most common locations for oral squamous cell carcinoma lesions. Human β-defensins (hBDs), which are mainly produced by epithelial cells, are cationic peptides with a wide antimicrobial spectrum. In addition to their role in antimicrobial defense, these peptides also take part in the regulation of the immune response. Recent studies produced evidence that these small antimicrobial peptides are related to the gene and protein expression profiles of tumors. While the suppression of hBDs is a common finding in head and neck cancer studies, opposite findings were also presented. In the present narrative review, the aim will be to discuss the changes in the hBD expression profile during the onset and progression of head and neck cancers. The final aim will be to discuss the use of hBDs as diagnostic markers of head and neck cancers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oral cancer (OC) is a debilitating disease that can affect the quality of life of these patients adversely. Oral premalignant lesion patients have a high risk of developing OC. Therefore, identifying robust survival subgroups among them may significantly improve patient therapy and care. This study aimed to identify prognostic biomarkers that predict the time-to-development of OC and survival stratification for patients using state-of-the-art machine learning and deep learning. METHODS Gene expression profiles (29,096 probes) related to 86 patients from the GSE26549 dataset from the GEO repository were used. An autoencoder deep learning neural network model was used to extract features. We also used a univariate Cox regression model to select significant features obtained from the deep learning method (P < 0.05). High-risk and low-risk groups were then identified using a hierarchical clustering technique based on 100 encoded features (the number of units of the encoding layer, i.e., bottleneck of the network) from autoencoder and selected by Cox proportional hazards model and a supervised random forest (RF) classifier was used to identify gene profiles related to subtypes of OC from the original 29,096 probes. RESULTS Among 100 encoded features extracted by autoencoder, seventy features were significantly related to time-to-OC-development, based on the univariate Cox model, which was used as the inputs for the clustering of patients. Two survival risk groups were identified (P value of log-rank test = 0.003) and were used as the labels for supervised classification. The overall accuracy of the RF classifier was 0.916 over the test set, yielded 21 top genes (FUT8-DDR2-ATM-CD247-ETS1-ZEB2-COL5A2-GMAP7-CDH1-COL11A2-COL3A1-AHR-COL2A1-CHORDC1-PTP4A3-COL1A2-CCR2-PDGFRB-COL1A1-FERMT2-PIK3CB) associated with time to developing OC, selected among the original 29,096 probes. CONCLUSIONS Using deep learning, our study identified prominent transcriptional biomarkers in determining high-risk patients for developing oral cancer, which may be prognostic as significant targets for OC therapy. The identified genes may serve as potential targets for oral cancer chemoprevention. Additional validation of these biomarkers in experimental prospective and retrospective studies will launch them in OC clinics.

Abstract
After skin malignancy, breast cancer is the most widely recognized cancer detected in women in the United States. Breast cancer (BCa) can happen in all kinds of people, but it's much more common in women. One in four cases of cancer and one in six deaths due to cancer are related to breast cancer. Angiogenesis is an essential factor in the growth of tumors and metastases in various malignancies. An expanded level of angiogenesis is related to diminished endurance in BCa patients. This function assumes a fundamental part inside the human body, from the beginning phases of life to dangerous malignancy. Various factors, referred to as angiogenic factors, work to make a new capillary. Expanding proof demonstrates that angiogenesis is managed by microRNAs (miRNAs), which are small non-coding RNA with 19-25 nucleotides. MiRNA is a post-transcriptional regulator of gene expression that controls many critical biological processes. Endothelial miRNAs, referred to as angiomiRs, are probably concerned with tumor improvement and angiogenesis via regulation of pro-and anti-angiogenic factors. In this article, we reviewed therapeutic functions of miRNAs in BCa angiogenesis, several novel delivery carriers for miRNA-based therapeutics, as well as CRISPR/Cas9 as a targeted therapy in breast cancer.

Abstract
Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is one of the most common oral malignancies. Radiotherapy is the primary noninvasive treatment of OSCC for avoiding surgery-induced facial deformities and impaired oral function. However, the specificity of in situ OSCC limits radiotherapeutic effects because of the hypoxia-induced low radiosensitivity of tumors and the low radiation tolerance of surrounding normal tissues. Here, we design a highly efficient and low-toxic radiosensitization strategy. On the one hand, biocompatible poly(vinyl pyrrolidone)-modified tantalum nanoparticles (Ta@PVP NPs) not only have strong X-ray deposition capability to upregulate oxidative stress but also have photothermal conversion efficiency to improve hypoxia for tumor radiosensitivity. On the other hand, to optimize the spatial distribution of Ta@PVP NPs within tumors, mussel-inspired catechol with bioadhesive properties is grafted on tumor microenvironment-responsive sodium alginate (DAA) to form in situ hydrogels for precision radiotherapy. On this basis, we find that Ta@PVP-DAA hydrogels effectively inhibit OSCC development in mice under photothermal-assisted radiotherapy without facial deformities and damage to surrounding normal tissues. Overall, our work not only promotes the exploration of Ta@PVP NPs as new radiosensitizers for OSCC but also develops a nanocomposite hydrogel system strategy as a promising paradigm for the precision treatment of orthotopic tumors.

Abstract
Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide, of which more than half of patients are diagnosed at a locally advanced stage with poor prognosis due to recurrence, metastasis and resistant to treatment. Thus, it is imperative to further explore the potential mechanism of development and drug resistance of oral cancer. Exosomes are small endosome-derived lipid nanoparticles that are released by cells. Since the cargoes of exosomes were inherited from their donor cells, the cargo profiles of exosomes can well recapitulate that of their donor cells. This is the theoretical basis of exosome-based liquid biopsy, providing a tool for early diagnosis of oral cancer. As an important intracellular bioactive cargo delivery vector, exosomes play a critical role in the development of oral cancer by transferring their cargoes to receipt cells. More importantly, recent studies have revealed that exosomes could induce therapy-resistance in oral cancer through multiple ways, including exosome-mediated drug efflux. In this review, we summarize and compare the role of exosomes in the diagnosis, development and therapy-resistant of oral cancer. We also highlight the clinical application of exosomes, and discuss the advantages and challenges of exosomes serving as predictive biomarker, therapy target and therapy vector in oral cancer.

The Evaluation of Clinical Signs and Symptoms of Malignant Tumors Involving the Maxillary Sinus: Recommendation of an Examination Sieve and Risk Alarm Score. Abstract
This observational study was conducted to evaluate the clinical signs and symptoms of maxillary sinus tumors and to propose a clinical examination sieve and a unique risk alarm score to be used for timely patient referral and vigilance. The study consisted of 70 patients between 20 to 82 years of age from both sexes. The clinical information gained was collected from the upper dentoalveolar segment, orbit, and nasal sites. Regarding the early clinical sign and symptoms of patients, nasal obstruction was found in 67 patients (95.7%), facial swelling in 69 patients (98.6%), paresthesia in 41 patients (58.6%), and epistaxis in 50 patients (71.4%). Furthermore, in terms of the late signs and symptoms, a palpable mass in buccal sulcus was observed in 65 (92.9%) of the patients, lymphadenopathy in 24 (34.3%), paresthesia in 38 (54.3%), and diplopia in 22 (31.4%). Furthermore, general sign and symptoms like exophthalmos was present in 35 patients (50%), anosmia was observed in 37 patients (52.9%), and oroantral fistula was noted in 37 patients (55.9%). Additionally, 67 (95.7%) of the patients complained of nasal obstruction. Similarly, facial asymmetry was observed in 69 (98.6%) of the patients and double vision was observed in 24 (34.4%). Tumors of the maxillary sinus have a very insidious course of spread and uncertain clinical signs and symptoms. What makes diagnosis worse is the fact that the symptoms of these tumors are so well hidden in the sponge-like nature of the midfacial region that they are easily misinterpreted by patients. Therefore, diagnoses must be made early, dentists must be vigilant, and patients must be fully investigated at the slightest suspicion of a tumor, albeit benign.

Abstract
Background: It is important to adhere to infection control measures in dental procedures due to direct contact with blood and saliva. During the Coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, regular surveillance is imperative to ensure adherence to the standards. This study aimed to assess the level of adherence to infection control guidelines in specialized dental clinics in different working shifts.
Materials and Methods: This study was assessed the level of adherence of 45 selected dental departments to three main guidelines released by (I) the Center for Disease Control (CDC), (II) Ministry of Health (MOH), and (III) armed forces organization (AFO) in three different working shift. The CDC checklist had eight domains. Thus, the items of each domain were individually scored, and considering the weighting coefficient of each item, the total score was calculated. The same procedure was carried out for the two remaining guidelines. Possible effect of working shifts and different specialties on infection control practice was also calculated.
Results: The mean rate of adherence was 70.7% to the CDC, 93.8% to the MOH and 84.4% to the AFO guidelines indicating that adherence to the CDC guidelines was lower than the other two domestic guidelines. Individual assessment of each item revealed that hand hygiene (39%) and safe handling and disposal of sharp instruments (46%) acquired the lowest, and sterilization (79%) and safe injection (97%) acquired the highest score according to the CDC checklist. There was no relationship between working shifts and dental specialties regarding the adherence to infection control standards.
Conclusion: Dental clinics had different performances regarding infection control guidelines. Further emphasis should be placed on hand hygiene and disposal of sharp instruments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: As all the dental staff, including nurses and practitioners, are exposed to various routes of contamination due to the novel COVID-19 virus, which is still unknown to the scientific world, developing strategies to reduce the risk of transmission and decontaminate surfaces in a dental office would be of high importance. Although there is still insufficient data on managing this virus in dental offices, several studies have suggested protocols for improving care.
AIM: This study aimed to review present investigations and reach a conclusion on what we know and need to know to combat this virus.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this review, Scopus, PubMed, and MEDLINE databases were searched using the keywords “COVID-19,” “SARS-CoV-2,” “Medical Disinfectants,” “Personal Protective Equipment’s,” and “Surface Decontamination.” Articles were reviewed, and finally, relevant articles published during 2000–2022 were included in the final paper.
RESULTS: The present research concluded that using a combination of the face shield and N95 masks protected the eyes, nose, and mouth. To have more efficient protection, water-resistant long-sleeved gowns and gloves were highly suggested. To overcome aerosols, high-performance air filters and ultraviolet were found quite effective. Allowing the patient to use antiseptic mouthwash before starting the treatment could reduce oral microorganisms and the following airborne contamination.
CONCLUSION: This review has gathered all available data regarding dentistry and COVID-19 in order to conclude what has been achieved yet in the prevention of this virus through dental offices; however, more investigations are needed to have a definitive protocol against the virus.

Abstract
We investigated the acupoint selection regulations and workable core acupoint combinations in cancer-related anorexia (CA) treatment. The Apriori algorithm, complemented by the FP-growth algorithm, was used to mine association rules based on retrieved randomized control trials (RCTs) and clinical control trials (CCTs). We searched the following databases for acupuncture treatment regimens for CA: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central, Web of Science, WanFang Data, VIP, China Journal Full-Text Database (CNKI), and SinoMed (CBM). We extracted acupoints prescriptions from the 27 enrolled RCTs and CCTs for analysis. There have been 38 acupoints refined from 27 prescriptions. The pinnacle three regularly chosen acupoints were Zusanli (ST36), Zhongwan (RN12), and Sanyinjiao (SP6). We investigated 10 association rules, and the consequences confirmed that {RN4} ≥ {RN12}, {PC6} ≥ {ST36}, {RN12, SP6} ≥ {RN4}, {HT7} ≥ {RN12}, and {DU20} ≥ {RN12} had been the most frequent associated rules in the adoption literature. Zusanli (ST36), Sanyinjiao (SP6), Guanyuan (RN4), Zhongwan (RN12), Neiguan (PC6), Shenmen (HT7), and Baihui (DU20) would be regarded as acupuncture prescriptions in the treatment of CA.

Abstract
Natural polymer-based hydrogel films possess considerable potential for use in biomedical applications and are excellent for wound healing. The purpose of this research was to use ionic crosslinking to improve the mechanical characteristics, absorption of fluid in the wound, and drug release behavior of Cassia alata L. (CA) extract loaded niosomes (CANs) that were incorporated in an alginate-pectin film (A/P). Then, chemically crosslinked A/P hydrogels were obtained by immersing them in different concentrations of calcium chloride (CaCl2) (0.5–1% w/v) for 15–120 s. The degree of crosslinking was controlled by both contact time and CaCl2 concentration. The optimal crosslinking conditions were 1% CaCl2 for 15 seconds. In this study, the following features of the hydrogel films were investigated: physical properties, morphological characteristics, drug loading, in vitro drug release, antibacterial activity, wound healing activity, cytocompatibility profiles, and hemocompatibility. The crosslinked hydrogel films maintained their physical integrity during use, with the 1% film attaining the best results in the shortest period (15 sec). Then, in vitro drug release from the films was examined. Crosslinking was observed to prolong the release of the CA extract from the hydrogel film. Finally, a cell viability experiment was conducted to evaluate the cytotoxicity profile. The A/P composite film exhibited excellent wound dressing qualities and good mechanical properties in preformulation testing. The in vitro drug release profile indicated that the A/P created a regulated drug release profile, and the cell viability experiment revealed that the film was nontoxic and hemocompatible. A/P composite films can be produced using CAN extract as a possible wound dressing. However, further studies in animals and humans are required to determine both safety and effectiveness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We aimed to demonstrate the effects circ_0058063 exerted on oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and its downstream mechanism associated with miR-145-5p and SERPINE1. METHODS The relevant contents of miR-145-5p, circ 0058063, and SERPINE1 mRNAs in OSCC were evaluated using RT-qPCR. Functional experiments including CCK-8, Transwell, Western blot and in vivo experiment were implemented to investigate the biological impacts on OSCC cells. Using dual-luciferase reporter, RIP, and RNA pull-down assays, the direct binding relationship between miR-145-5p, circ 0058063, and SERPINE1, SMAD3, CYR61, and IGF1R mRNAs was verified. RESULTS In OSCC, Circ 0058063 was significantly overexpressed. Knockdown of circ_0058063 suppressed OSCC cell migration and proliferation, but enhanced cell apoptosis. Functionally and mechanistically, circ_0058063 could specifically bind with miR-145-5p and thus up-regulated expression of downstream target SERPINE1, which together contributed to the progression of OSCC. CONCLUSION Circ_0058063 could promote malignant behavior of OSCC by upregulating SERPINE1 through sponging miR-145-5p.

Abstract
Cisplatin-based chemotherapy has been effectively used to treat oral cancer, but treatment often fails owing to the development of drug resistance. However, the important gene expression alterations associated with these resistances remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to identify the gene expressions related to cisplatin resistance in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cell lines. RNA samples were obtained from three cisplatin-resistant (YD-8/CIS, YD-9/CIS, and YD-38/CIS) and -sensitive (YD-8, YD-9, and YD-38) cell lines. Global gene expression was analyzed using RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq). Differentially expressed genes were determined. Based on the gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) databases, functional enrichment and signaling pathways analyses were performed. Candidate genes selected from RNA-Seq analysis were validated by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis. The YD-8/CIS and YD-9/CIS samples had very similar expression patterns. qRT-PCR analysis was performed on selected genes commonly expressed between the two samples. The expression levels of 11 genes were changed in cisplatin-resistant samples compared with their parental samples; several of these genes were related to cell adhesion molecules and proteoglycans in cancer pathways. Our data provide candidate genes associated with cisplatin resistance in OSCC, but further study is required to determine which genes have an important role. Nevertheless, these results may provide new ideas to improve the clinical therapeutic outcomes of OSCC.

Abstract
Objectives Many patients suffer from non-repaired bone defects and subsequent aesthetic and psychological problems following bone fractures from accidents. The main goal of the study was to compare and evaluate synthetic hydroxyapatite with xenograft and commercial hydroxyapatite for bone repair and reconstruction. Methods In this study, synthetic hydroxyapatite was fabricated and verified. Cytotoxicity tests (i.e., induction coupled plasma [ICP], density and porosity analysis, scanning electron microscope [SEM] analysis, and thiazolyl blue tetrazolium blue [MTT] assay) were performed. Synthetic, xenograft, and commercial hydroxyapatite were tested in the animal study. Finally, bone regeneration was assessed using haematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining. Results The Ca/P ratio was measured for xenograft and commercial samples, and values were lower than those for the synthesised hydroxyapatite. The amount of surface porosity in the synthesised sample was greater than in the commercial and xenograft samples. Additionally, the density of the synthesised hydroxyapatite was lower than that of the xenograft and commercial samples. A small amount of ossification from natural bone margins was observed at 4 weeks in the xenograft and commercial hydroxyapatite group. In the synthetic group, immature bone formation was observed at 4 weeks. The rate of ossification and cell infiltration in the xenograft and commercial hydroxyapatite samples was higher at 8 weeks than at 4 weeks, and this rate was lower than in the synthesised hydroxyapatite group. The synthesised hydroxyapatite group exhibited greater ossification than the xenograft and commercial hydroxyapatite, and control groups at 12 weeks. Conclusion This study showed that synthesised hydroxyapatite had better effects on bone regeneration and could be used in bone tissue engineering.

Abstract
Communication is the basis of nursing care and can have a significant effect on patient and community health. This study aimed to optimize the professional and interprofessional relationships of nurses. This participatory action research was conducted with 288 patients and 23 staff of one of the Reference Hospitals in Tehran, Iran, from 2019 to 2020. Interviews were simultaneously analyzed using the conventional content analysis method, and in the quantitative section, the communication skills checklist and a researcher-made questionnaire were used. Participants gave oral and written consent, and their confidentiality and anonymity were respected. Participants’ experiences showed that the implemented programs changed the work environment. The acquired basic concepts were improving the nurse’s responsibility and accountability, improving the quality of care and respecting the patient and the family. Quantitative data obtained before and after the implementation of change programs showed that patient satisfaction increased from 41.57±7.03 to 94.34±4.67 and patient and family training from 113.73±19.77 to 245.99±36.61. The length of hospital stay decreased from 5.52±2.47 to 3.57±2.35 days, nosocomial infections from 32.1±2.8 to 17.4±2.4 and readmission from 4.8±1.2 to 2.3±1.1. The results indicated that patients’ quality of care and safety was increased by optimizing the nurse’s professional and interprofessional relationship. Patients reported greater respect, and nurses had higher job satisfaction.
