Abstract
Children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience various sleep problems. Sleep problems co-occur in a bidirectional relationship with ASD core symptoms and behavioral problems. However, studies on how these three factors are intricately linked to each other are limited. This meta-analysis examined the differential relationship between specific sleep problems, core symptoms, and behavioral problems in this population. This study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42022339695). We systematically searched the PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from inception to April 27, 2022. Observational studies that reported correlations between measures of sleep problems, ASD core symptoms, or ASD behavioral problems were included, and participants aged 18 years or below were enrolled. The correlation coefficient (r) was assessed as the primary effect metric. Total 22 cross-sectional studies were included, which comprised 2655 participants (mean age = 6.60 years old; mean percentage of boys = 80.64%). We found correlations between total sleep problems and total core symptoms (r 0.293 [95% confidence interval - 0.095 to 0.604]), total sleep problems and total behavioral problems (r 0.429 [0.299-0.544]), and total core symptoms and total behavioral problems (r - 0.050 [- 0.177 to 0.079]) and identified statistically significant correlations between specific components of sleep problems, ASD core symptoms, and ASD behavioral problems. Each specific sleep problem showed a unique association with core symptoms and behavioral problems. Sleep problems in ASD should be explored in detail, and the closely linked core symptoms and behavioral problems should be common therapeutic targets.

Abstract
Sleep problems are common in youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Externalizing and internalizing problems contribute to dysfunction in youth with ADHD and are amplified by disrupted sleep. This objective of this article is to synthesize empirical studies that examined the associations between sleep and internalizing or externalizing problems in individuals with ADHD. The main findings are that sleep problems precede, predict, and significantly contribute to the manifestation of internalizing and externalizing behavior problems among children and adolescents with ADHD. Clinicians should assess sleep and integrate sleep interventions into the management of youth with ADHD.

Abstract
There is an increasing need to identify and treat sleep disturbances in Tourette syndrome (TS), a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by tics. This study explored sleep, tics, and executive functioning in children with TS (n=136) and neurotypical controls (n=101) through parent-report scales and open-ended questions. 85% of children with TS scored in the clinical range for a sleep disorder. Higher tic severity predicted increased sleep disturbances and executive difficulties. Qualitative insights indicated a bidirectional link between sleep and tics, which warrants consideration in clinical settings. Further research is needed to explore causal links.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To describe phenotypic, polysomnographic characteristics, impact, and treatment response in children with sleep related rhythmic movement disorder (SR-RMD). BACKGROUND There is limited research on SR-RMD. We have developed a systematic clinical evaluation of children with SR-RMD to improve understanding and treatment. METHODS A retrospective chart review of 66 children at a UK tertiary hospital. Baseline assessment included validated screening questionnaires to study autism spectrum characteristics, general behaviour and sensory profile. A standardised questionnaire assessed impact on sleep quality and daytime wellbeing of child and family. Polysomnography data were collated. RESULTS Children were aged 0.9-16.3 years (78.8% male). 51.5% had a neurodevelopmental disorder, most commonly autism spectrum disorder. High rates of behavioural disturbance and sensory processing differences were reported, not confined to children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Parents reported concerns about risk of injury, loss of sleep and persistence into adulthood. Daytime wellbeing was affected in 72% of children and 75% of other family members. Only 31/48 children demonstrated rhythmic movements during video-polysomnography, occupying on average 6.1% of time in bed. Most clusters occurred in the settling period but also arose from N1, N2 and REM sleep and wake after sleep onset. Melatonin was prescribed to 52 children, all but one were extended-release preparations. 24/27 children with available data were reported to improve with melatonin. CONCLUSIONS SR-RMD places a significant burden on child and family wellbeing. Our novel findings of sensory processing differences in this population and parent reported therapeutic response to extended-release melatonin offer potential avenues for future research.

Abstract
A high prevalence of sleep disturbances has been reported in children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and intellectual disability (ID). The etiology of sleep disorders in these children is heterogeneous and, recently, iron deficiency has received increasing attention. This study aims to investigate sleep features in children with NDDs and to explore a possible correlation between serum iron status biomarkers and qualitative features of sleep. We included 4- to 12-year-old children with a diagnosis of ASD, ADHD, or ID and assessed their sleep features through the children's sleep habits questionnaire (CSHQ). Venous blood samples were collected to investigate ferritin, transferrin, and iron levels. The mean CSHQ total score exceeds the cut-off in all groups of children. In the ASD group, the Parasomnias subscale negatively correlated with serum ferritin levels (Rho = 0.354; p = 0.029). Our findings may suggest the existence of an association between iron status, sleep quality, and neurodevelopmental processes. In clinical practice, sleep assessment should be included in the routine assessment for patients with NDDs. Furthermore, a routine assessment of iron status biomarkers should be recommended for children with NDDs who have sleep disturbances.

Abstract
Previous reviews have described the links between sleep and mental health extensively. In this narrative review, we focus on literature published during the last decade investigating the links between sleep and mental health difficulties in childhood and adolescence. More specifically, we focus on the mental health disorders listed in the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. We also discuss possible mechanisms underlying these associations. The review ends with a discussion of possible future lines of enquiry.

Abstract
Objectives: The aims of this study were to: (1) explore sleep problems in preschool children with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), selective mutism (SM), and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and (2) examine the relationship between stressful life events, sleep problems, and emotional behavior disorders in preschoolers. Methods: The parents of 213 preschool children with SM, GAD, ODD, and TD (typical development, age range 2–6 years) completed the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ), the Coddington Life Events Scale, preschool version (CLES-P), and the CBCL 1½–5. Results: Eighty-three subjects reported sleep problems before the age of 2 years. Seventy-five children (86.14%) with a clinical diagnosis and eight children with TD (8.4%) exceeded the threshold level on the CSHQ. For the bedtime resistance (p = 0.042) and sleep duration subscales (p = 0.038), the SM group had significantly higher scores in comparison to the ODD group. The same pattern was also true for the sleep onset (p = 0.024) and sleep anxiety subscales (p = 0.019). The linear regression analysis model showed that the impact of stressful life events and internalizing problems could predict sleep habits in children. Conclusions: Emotional behavior disorders and stress factors should be regularly investigated in children who are referred to clinics for sleep problems. Clinicians should consider how these symptoms may exacerbate sleep problems and/or interfere with treatment.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES The current study aimed to examine the association of insomnia symptoms with daytime behavior and cognitive functioning in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). METHODS Thirty-six children with ADHD and insomnia symptoms, 27 children with ADHD without insomnia symptoms, and 21 age-matched healthy controls were recruited in this study (age range: 6-12 years, 70% male). They were assessed by parent-report questionnaires on insomnia symptoms (Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire) and ADHD symptoms (Strengths and Weaknesses of ADHD Symptoms and Normal Behavior Scale [SWAN]), and completed a battery of cognitive tests including the Continuous Performance Test (CPT) for sustained attention, Letter-digit test for processing speed, Digit Span forward test and N-back task for working memory, Tower of London (TOL) test for planning skills and Bergs Card Sorting Test (BCST) for set-shifting ability. RESULTS Children with ADHD and insomnia symptoms had the highest scores on SWAN total and inattention and hyperactivity subscales, followed by children with ADHD without insomnia and healthy controls (all P < .05). After controlling for potential confounders, children with ADHD and insomnia symptoms showed poorer performance on the CPT and Letter-digit test as compared with children with ADHD without insomnia and healthy controls (all P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Insomnia symptoms are associated with more severe ADHD symptoms and cognitive impairments in children with ADHD, especially deficits in sustained attention and processing speed. Future longitudinal studies are needed to explore the long-term impacts of insomnia symptoms and the effects of sleep-focused intervention on cognitive functioning in children with ADHD. Abstract
BACKGROUND Children with ADHD are reported to have sleep problems and neuropsychological deficits, but studies examining a potential association between the two are scarce and the use of varying methodology can complicate conclusions. PARTICIPANTS A clinical sample of 59 medication-naïve children with ADHD between the ages of 6 and 14 years (71% male). METHODS Children underwent polysomnography and multiple sleep latency test, and parent rated sleep habits on the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire. Children also completed an extensive neuropsychological battery of executive function and delay aversion tasks, and parents and teachers rated executive function behavior on the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function. Linear regression analyses were conducted with each of the neuropsychological outcomes included as the outcome variable and the sleep parameters as the predictor variables. RESULTS The correlations between sleep and neuropsychological outcomes were generally modest, but some sleep parameters (primarily sleep stages and sleep latencies) were associated with objectively and subjectively measured executive function and delay aversion. CONCLUSIONS Using objective and subjective gold standard assessment procedures this study supports a (modest) association between sleep and neuropsychological function in children with ADHD.

Abstract
There is a complex relationship between sleep disorders and childhood neurodevelopmental, emotional, behavioral and intellectual disorders (NDEBID). NDEBID include several conditions such as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and learning (intellectual) disorders. Up to 75% of children and young people (CYP) with NDEBID are known to experience different types of insomnia, compared to 3% to 36% in normally developing population. Sleep disorders affect 15% to 19% of adolescents with no disability, in comparison with 26% to 36% among CYP with moderate learning disability (LD) and 44% among those with severe LD. Chronic sleep deprivation is associated with significant risks of behavioural problems, impaired cognitive development and learning abilities, poor memory, mood disorders and school problems. It also increases the risk of other health outcomes, such as obesity and metabolic consequences, significantly impacting on the wellbeing of other family members. This narrative review of the extant literature provides a brief overview of sleep physiology, aetiology, classification and prevalence of sleep disorders among CYP with NDEBIDs. It outlines various strategies for the management, including parenting training/psychoeducation, use of cognitive-behavioral strategies and pharmacotherapy. Practical management including assessment, investigations, care plan formulation and follow-up are outlined in a flow chart.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the correlation between sleep disorders and attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. METHODS We studied 100 Chinese children (70 boys and 30 girls; mean age, 8.77 ± 2.39 years). Parents completed the Children's Sleep Disturbance Scale (SDSC) and the Swanson Nolan and Pelham Version IV Scale (SNAP-IV) questionnaires. SNAP-IV and SDSC scores were compared in children with and without sleep disorders and ADHD. RESULTS There were significant differences in SDSC scores, Arousal Disorder (AD) scores, and Sleep Breathing Disorder (SBD) scores between children with and without ADHD (P < 0.05). The sleep disorder group had higher SNAP-IV scores than the non-sleep disorder group (P < 0.05). Children with sleep disorders showed higher ADHD symptom values (inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity, and oppositional defiance) than children without sleep disorders (P < 0.01). There was a moderate correlation between SDSC scores and SNAP-IV scores (r = 0.486, P < 0.05). Using SNAP-IV scores as the dependent variable, multiple linear regression analysis was applied, and a statistically significant effect of AD and Sleep-Wake Transition Disorder (SWTD) scores on SNAP-IV scores was found (P < 0.05). The area under the curve (95% CI) of the SDSC score for predicting sleep disorders with ADHD was 0.714 (0.606, 0.821; P = 0.0005). CONCLUSION Children with ADHD are prone to sleep disorders. The higher the ADHD symptom score, the more sleeping problems. Sleep disorders can also cause or exacerbate ADHD symptoms, and the ADHD symptom score correlates with sleep disorder severity. We can reduce the severity of attention-deficit-hyperactivity in children with ADHD by improving their sleep with behavioral sleep interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in childhood. Children with ADHD have more frequent comorbid sleep disorders than healthy children. The current methods of treating sleep disorders in ADHD children are still focused on pharmacological interventions which in fact only provide little benefit.
AIM: This study aims to identify existing studies regarding the types of nonpharmacological and complementary interventions for sleep disorders in children with ADHD using a narrative review approach.
METHODS: This was a narrative review. Inclusion criteria included articles in English and Bahasa, full-text articles, primary studies, and children with ADHD aged 18 years with or without comorbidities as the research sample, and the article having been published in the last 10 years. Searches were performed in several databases: PubMed, Springer, Web of Science, and Google Scholar.
RESULTS: The result showed that programs for managing sleep disorder in ADHD are behavioral therapy, behavioral parent training (BPT), behavioral sleep intervention, neurofeedback, mind-body therapy, L-theanine supplementation, horse milk supplementation, and play therapy. The programs are found to be effective in improving sleep.
CONCLUSION: The program most comprehensive with a high level of ease of implementation was BPT.

Abstract
Objective: The aim of the current study was to examine relations between sleep problems and family factors and early markers of ADHD in young children with and without a familial risk for ADHD.Methods: Differences in sleep behavior and family functioning in children under 6 years with (n = 72) and without (n = 139) a familial risk for ADHD were investigated. The influence of family and sleep factors on the development of early temperament markers of ADHD (effortful control and negative affect) was explored. Parents/caregivers completed questionnaires on family functioning, child sleep behavior, and general regulatory behaviors.Results: A significant difference was observed between high-risk and low-risk groups for family functioning in the infant/toddler (<3 years) and preschool (>3 years) cohorts. Parents of infants/toddlers in the high-risk group reported poorer infant sleep. However, there were no sleep differences reported for the preschool cohort. Family functioning was found to predict effortful control, while sleep quality predicted negative affect.Conclusion: The results of this study highlight potential family and sleep issues for young children with a familial history of ADHD and the potential influence of these factors on early temperament markers of ADHD. Future research should explore these relations further in order to better establish whether early sleep and family interventions could mitigate later ADHD symptomatology.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep-related problems are highly prevalent comorbidities in Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the associations between sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) and behavioral and cognitive functions in children with and without ADHD. METHODS A total of 341 children were included (ADHD group: 155, control group: 186; age: 6-10 years). The participants' sleep-related symptoms were assessed using a parent-rated questionnaire, and they were categorized into low- and high-risk SDB groups based on their scores. Behavioral symptoms were assessed using the Behavioral Assessment System for Children, Second Edition (BASC-2), and cognitive sustained attention and inhibitory control were assessed using a computer-based continuous performance test. RESULTS In the ADHD group, the high-risk SDB children showed significantly higher scores than the low-risk SDB group in externalizing problems (F = 4.22; P = 0.042), including hyperactivity (F = 4.65; P = 0.033) and attention problems (F = 8.19; P = 0.005), but not internalizing problems. Meanwhile, in the control group, the high-risk SDB children showed significantly higher scores than the low-risk SDB group in internalizing problems (F = 9.89; P = 0.002), depression (F = 9.45; P = 0.002), and somatization (F = 7.83; P = 0.006), as well as in externalizing problems (F = 7.72; P = 0.006), including hyperactivity (F = 6.23; P = 0.013), aggression (F = 5.00; P = 0.027), and conduct problems (F = 6.79; P = 0.010). Contrary to the behavioral outcomes, none of the attention performance subscale scores showed significant differences between the high- and low-risk SDB groups in either the ADHD or control group. CONCLUSIONS The present findings suggest that SDB is associated with behavioral problems in children with ADHD and controls, with stronger associations in control children. On the contrary, SDB has no association with cognitive attention performance. This study extends our understanding of the associations of SDB with behavioral symptoms and cognitive functions in children.

Abstract
Sleep problems are common in youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Externalizing and internalizing problems contribute to dysfunction in youth with ADHD and are amplified by disrupted sleep. This objective of this article is to synthesize empirical studies that examined the associations between sleep and internalizing or externalizing problems in individuals with ADHD. The main findings are that sleep problems precede, predict, and significantly contribute to the manifestation of internalizing and externalizing behavior problems among children and adolescents with ADHD. Clinicians should assess sleep and integrate sleep interventions into the management of youth with ADHD.

Abstract
Background Individuals with Down syndrome are predisposed to a number of chronic health conditions, but the relationship between these conditions and cognitive ability is not clear. The primary objective of this systematic review is to assess this relationship by evaluating studies that measure cognitive performance in the context of Down syndrome-associated chronic health conditions. Methods A systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies included in this review (1) included children, adolescent, and young adult participants with Down syndrome and one or more co-occurring health conditions; (2) were quantitative; and (3) reported outcomes related to both chronic health conditions and cognitive performance. A set of predetermined chronic health conditions that are common in Down syndrome (e.g. sleep disorders, congenital heart disease, thyroid disease, seizure disorders, and pulmonary hypertension) were selected based on prevalence rates in Down syndrome. Results Fifteen studies met inclusion criteria. The majority these of studies assessed cognitive performance in association with sleep disorders (47%) and congenital heart disease (47%). Fewer studies reported on the effect of thyroid disease (7%) and seizure disorders (7%) on cognitive ability. None of the studies reported cognitive outcomes related to pulmonary hypertension. Of the chronic health conditions evaluated, associations between sleep disorders and cognitive dysfunction were most common among individuals with Down syndrome. Conclusions Individuals with Down syndrome exhibit deficits in cognitive ability, particularly related to attention, executive function and verbal processing. These deficits may be further exacerbated by the presence of chronic health conditions, particularly sleep disorders. Individuals with Down syndrome and co-occurring sleep disorders may benefit from early interventions to mitigate their risk for adverse cognitive outcomes.

Abstract
Aim of the present systematic review was to evaluate whether children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at greater chance of developing bruxism compared to individuals without this disorder. Observational studies that evaluated the occurrence of bruxism in children and adolescents with ADHD were included. The quality of the evidence was evaluated using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation criteria. Thirty-two studies involving a total of 2629 children/adolescents with ADHD and 1739 with bruxism (1629 with sleep bruxism and 110 with awake bruxism) were included. The prevalence of bruxism, irrespective of type, in the children/adolescents was 31% (95% CI: 0.22-0.41, I2 = 93%). ADHD was associated with an increased chance of bruxism (OR: 2.94, 95% CI: 2.12-4.07, I2 = 61%), independently of the type [sleep bruxism (OR: 2.77, 95% CI: 1.90-4.03, I2 = 66%) or awake bruxism (OR: 10.64, 95% CI: 2.41-47.03, I2 = 65%)]. The presence of signs of ADHD without a diagnostic confirmation was not associated with an increased chance of bruxism (OR: 3.26, 95% CI: 0.76-14.04, I2 = 61%). Children and adolescents with a definitive diagnosis of ADHD are at greater chance of developing sleep and awake bruxism than those without this disorder.

OBJECTIVES Sleep health in rare disease is often overlooked due to the complex nature of the disease. For males with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, sleep assessment is typically focused on pulmonary function and identification of sleep disordered breathing. Unfortunately for young boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, sleep assessment is often neglected, resulting in a dearth of knowledge on sleep health in this population. This study describes sleep quantity and quality in both younger (4-9 years) and older (10-17 years) males with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (n = 19) and compares these characteristics with sleep characteristics of unaffected peers (n = 17). METHODS This study was a longitudinal, observational study. Sleep measures were collected using the parent-proxy Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire-Abbreviated version and objective sleep measures from actigraphy (sleep efficiency, awakenings, and awakening duration) over 30 days for all participants. Means and standard deviations were examined, and effect sizes were computed to quantify the magnitude of difference between the Duchenne muscular dystrophy and unaffected groups. RESULTS Overall, boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy were found to experience worse sleep than their unaffected peers as measured by parent report and actigraphy. Effect sizes of both measures demonstrated moderate to large magnitudes of difference in many of the sleep variables. Parents of boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy reported higher scores (indicating worse sleep) in all subsections and total score of the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire - Abbreviated version. Actigraphy data indicated that the Duchenne muscular dystrophy group had lower percent sleep efficiency, more night awakenings and longer duration of night awakenings than their unaffected peers. CONCLUSION Our findings offer a novel look into sleep in young boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Both parent-report and actigraphy data indicate poor sleep health in this population compared with age-matched unaffected peers. Actigraphy was found to align with parent-report of sleep in this population, supporting the use of these two different ways to measure sleep in Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Results from this study should encourage clinicians and researchers alike to further explore sleep and its impact on disease in young boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy.

Abstract
The aim of the present systematic review was to compare sleep disorders in children, from 7 to 12 years old, with and without an attention-deficithyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis. Electronic literature search of PubMed, LILACS, Scopus, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases was conducted in September 2017. We included cross-sectional observational studies comparing the sleep of children between 7 and 12 years old, with and without an ADHD diagnosis, reported according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders criteria. The studies with other research designs, those that included adolescents and/or adults in the sample and those who evaluated the sleep of children with ADHD and other associated comorbidities were excluded. A total of 1911 articles were identified. After analyzing, 8 articles were compatible with the theme and included in the review. For sleep evaluation, most of the studies used an objective measure together with another subjective measure. Three out of six studies that used objective measures did not observe any differences between children with and without ADHD diagnosis. Children with ADHD presented more sleep disturbances when compared to children without the diagnosis. These disorders were diverse, yet inconsistent among the surveys. More studies are needed to clarify and for robust results.

Abstract
Background. Adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently suffer from sleep problems and report high levels of daytime sleepiness compared to neurotypical controls, which has detrimental effect on quality of life. Methods. We evaluated daytime sleepiness in adults with ADHD compared to neurotypical controls using an observer-rated sleepiness protocol during the Sustained Attention Response Task as well as electroencephalogram (EEG) slowing, a quantitative electroencephalographic measure collected during a short period of wakeful rest. Results. We found that adults with ADHD were significantly sleepier than neurotypical controls during the cognitive task and that this on-task sleepiness contributed to cognitive performance deficits usually attributed to symptoms of ADHD. EEG slowing predicted severity of ADHD symptoms and diagnostic status, and was also related to daytime sleepiness. Frontal EEG slowing as well as increased frontal delta were especially prominent in adults with ADHD. We have validated and adapted an objective observer-rated measure for assessing on-task sleepiness that will contribute to future sleep research in psychology and psychiatry. Conclusions. These findings indicate that the cognitive performance deficits routinely attributed to ADHD and often conceptualized as cognitive endophenotypes of ADHD are largely due to on-task sleepiness and not exclusively due to ADHD symptom severity. Daytime sleepiness plays a major role in cognitive functioning of adults with ADHD.

Abstract
To examine subjective and objective sleep patterns in children with different Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) presentations. METHOD We assessed 92 children diagnosed with ADHD (29 ADHD-Inattentive [ADHD-I], 31 ADHD-Hyperactive/Impulsive [ADHD-H/I], and 32 ADHD-Combined [ADHD-C)]) aged 7-11 years. The Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ), Pediatric Daytime Sleepiness Scale (PDSS), and a sleep diary were used as subjective sleep measures, and polysomnography was used to objectively assess sleep quantity, quality, and fragmentation. RESULTS Subjective data showed impaired sleep in 12.7% of the sample. No significant differences were found between ADHD presentations in any objective and subjective sleep variable. Nevertheless, data on sleep fragmentation suggested a worse sleep continuity for the ADHD-H/I group, and correlation analyses confirmed that sleep is affected by age. CONCLUSIONS Children with ADHD may suffer from sleep breathing problems and daytime sleepiness, as reported by their parents, even when their total sleep time and sleep efficiency are not affected. It seems that sleep in this population does not largely vary as a function of the ADHD presentation. Sleep in children with ADHD evolves with age.

Abstract
The discrepancies in prior research about the actual sleep problems underlying attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) demand more studies of children with this disorder. This study aimed to compare the subjective and objective sleep characteristics of 20 children with ADHD (DSM-IV criteria) and 20 typically developing children (aged 7-11 years). We assessed the children using sleep questionnaires and polysomnography recordings and analysed differences between the two groups using two-tailed Mann-Whitney U exact tests and Rosenthal's r as effect size measure. We also assessed associations between sleep measures and psychopathology using Spearman's correlation coefficients. No significant difference was found between the groups in almost any objective sleep variable, except for shorter REM latency in the ADHD group. Children with ADHD also showed significantly higher levels of daytime sleepiness and greater general sleep problems than control children, as reported by their parents, after discarding the primary sleep problems commonly associated with ADHD. Significant correlations were found between psychopathology and sleep measures. Our findings might support the link between narcolepsy-like sleep phenotype and ADHD. However, longitudinal research combining objective and subjective assessments should further explore the involvement of other variables, such as ADHD subtypes, medication, and comorbid symptoms in this relationship.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to correlate sleep profile and behavior in individuals with Specific Learning Disorder (SLD). METHODS The Sleep General Habits Questionnaire, Sleep Diary, and Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children (SDSC) were used in analysis of sleep, whereas the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) inventory was used in analysis of behavior. RESULTS 65.5% of the individuals with SLD presented symptoms of sleep disorders, most frequently wakefulness-sleep transition and sleep disturbance total score, which showed values higher than acceptable. In addition, individuals with SLD presented higher sleep latency than those with typical development. Concerning behavior, 72.4% of the individuals with SLD presented clinical condition of behavior problems. In the control group, none of the participants showed symptoms of sleep or behavior problems. In the SLD group, correlation was observed between behavioral problems and sleep disturbance. CONCLUSION Individuals with SLD showed high rates of sleep disturbance and behavioral problems. The worse the sleep disturbance, the worse the behavioral aspects in these individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep may underlie psychiatric symptoms in young children. However, not many studies have reported on sleep and its associations with symptoms in young child psychiatric patients. OBJECTIVES To assess the amount and quality of sleep and how sleep associates with psychiatric symptoms in young child psychiatric patients. Furthermore, we evaluated how sleep and daytime somnolence differed in patients and their age- and gender-matched controls. METHOD The sample consisted of 139 3- to 7-year-old child psychiatric outpatients and 139 age- and gender-matched controls from community. We evaluated sleep and daytime somnolence with the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children in all children and psychiatric symptoms with Child Behaviour Checklist (CBCL) in the patient group. Family background information was collected from the patients. RESULTS Of the patients, 31.6% had a significant sleep problem and 14.4% slept too little. The most typical sleep problems were restless sleep (31.7%), morning tiredness (21.6%) and difficulties getting to sleep at night (18.7%). All types of sleep problems were associated with CBCL total, internalising and externalising problems (all p-values < .01). We observed a strong association between all types of sleep problems and emotionally reactive subscale ( p-value < .001). Furthermore, parent-reported sleep problems increased significantly the risk of having high scores on total (odds ratio (OR) = 5.3, 95% confidence interval (CI) = [2.2, 12.6], p < .001), external (OR = 3.7, 95%, CI = [1.6, 8.5], p < .01) and internal (OR = 2.5, 95% CI = [1.1, 5.5], p < .05) scores after controlling for age, gender, family structure and parent's educational level. Even mild sleep disturbance increased the intensity of psychiatric symptoms. Compared to controls, patients slept less ( p < .001) and had significantly more frequent restless sleep, nightmares and morning and daytime somnolence. CONCLUSION Sleep problems and too little sleep are prevalent in young child psychiatric patients, and they relate strongly to the intensity of psychiatric symptoms. Identification and treatment of sleep problems should be a routine part of the treatment plan for young child psychiatric patients. The results emphasise the need for assessing sleep in young child psychiatric patients, as treating the sleep problem may reduce psychiatric symptoms.

Abstract
Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most commonly diagnosed disorders in childhood, enduring through adolescence and adulthood and presenting with symptoms of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity and significantly impairing functioning. Primary sleep disorders such as sleep-disordered breathing, restless leg syndrome, circadian rhythm sleep disorder, insomnia, and narcolepsy are commonly comorbid in these individuals but not often assessed and are therefore often left untreated. Sleep disturbances in individuals with ADHD can result in significant functional impairments that affect mood, attention, behavior, and ultimately school/work performance and quality of life. Previous reviews have described findings related to sleep but have neglected to examine potential impacts of these sleep disorders and ADHD on daytime functioning. This review investigates empirical findings pertaining to sleep abnormalities and related cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and physical impairments in individuals with ADHD and comorbid primary sleep disorders across the life span. It discusses implications to management and highlights existing limitations and recommended future directions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We examined whether current overall attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), inattention, or hyperactivity symptom severities are associated with the current presence and persistent history of sleep problems. METHODS N = 942 participants of the Netherlands Sleep Registry filled out online several validated questionnaires. Regression analyses were performed to assess the association between (1) current overall ADHD symptom severity and the current presence of sleep problems, (2) current ADHD symptom-severity groups and the persistent history of sleep problems, and (3) current inattention or hyperactivity symptom severities and the current presence of sleep problems. RESULTS (1) Current overall ADHD symptom severity was associated with the odds of suffering from probable obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), restless legs syndrome (RLS), periodic limb movement disorder (PLMD), insomnia disorder (ID) with predominant difficulties initiating sleep (DIS) and maintaining sleep (DMS), but not with the odds of suffering from narcolepsy or ID with predominant early-morning awakening (EMA). Current overall ADHD symptom severity was also associated with an extreme evening chronotype but not with short sleep. (2) The group with the most severe current ADHD symptoms was more likely to have a history of persistent OSAS, RLS, and ID. (3) The severity of symptoms of hyperactivity, but not of inattention, was specifically associated with probable RLS, PLMD, ID with DIS or DMS, and short sleep. Inattention symptom severity was only related to the probability of being an extreme evening chronotype. CONCLUSION ADHD severity, especially the severity of hyperactivity, is associated with the current presence and persistent history of sleep problems.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a complex neurobehavioral disorder affecting millions of patients worldwide. Effective treatments have been available for more than 60 years in the form of immediate-release (IR) stimulants However, stimulants have a high risk for abuse and are associated with adverse effects Including elevated blood pressure and heart rate, insomnia and decreased appetite. IR formulations also require multiple daily dosing. The search for improved safety, tolerability and convenience has led to the development of multiple extended-release (ER) stimulant and non-stimulant formulations. Areas covered: Adverse effects of (ER) products including amphetamine, methylphenidate, clonidine and guanfacine will be reviewed and their significance discussed. Expert opinion: Limitations of currently marketed medications have led to the search for drugs with efficacy comparable to ER stimulants and a more favorable adverse event profile. Several are in development, but their potential utility is not yet known. Current research is also focused on finding specific genetic defects in patients with ADHD. Exciting progress has been made with the identification of mGluR receptor defects in some patients. However because of the heterogeneity of the disorder, effective targeted treatments for the majority of patients with ADHD does not appear likely in the near future.
