Abstract
Octa-(3-chloropropryl)silsesquioxane was chemically modified with histidine (SSQ-H) and characterized by spectroscopy in the infrared region (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray Dispersive Energy Spectroscopy (EDX), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The analytical properties of SSQ-H were tested regarding of Cu2+ and Zn2+ adsorption and as an electrochemical sensor for the detection of ascorbic acid. The metal sorption results indicate that maximum amount of Cu2+ and Zn2+ adsorbed (Nfmax) were 1.58 × 10-3 and 5.67 × 10-4 mol g-1, respectively. After Cu2+ and Zn2+ ion adsorption and interaction with potassium hexacyanoferrate (III), the investigated materials displayed electroactivity for ascorbic acid detection. The anodic peak currents responses of a graphite paste electrode containing CuHCFSSQ-H presented a linear response in the concentration range of 4.0 × 10-4 to 4.0 × 10-3 mol L-1 for ascorbic acid detection. The limit of detection was of 2.99 × 10-4 mol L-1, with an amperometric sensitivity of 1.69 μA/mol L-1. The intensity of the anodic peak currents of the graphite paste electrode containing ZnHCFSSQ-H in the concentration range of 9.0 × 10-5 to 9.0 × 10-4 mol L-1 also displayed a linear response. The limit of detection was of 6.76 × 10-5 mol L-1, with an amperometric sensitivity of 0.0206 A/mol L-1.

Abstract
Nanostructuring boron-doped diamond (BDD) films increases their sensitivity and performance when used as electrodes in electrochemical environments. We have developed a method to produce such nanostructured, porous electrodes by depositing BDD thin film onto a densely packed "forest" of vertically aligned multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The CNTs had previously been exposed to a suspension of nanodiamond in methanol causing them to clump together into "teepee" or "honeycomb" structures. These nanostructured CNT/BDD composite electrodes have been extensively characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Not only do these electrodes possess the excellent, well-known characteristics associated with BDD (large potential window, chemical inertness, low background levels), but also they have electroactive areas and double-layer capacitance values ∼450 times greater than those for the equivalent flat BDD electrodes.

Abstract
Ionic liquid self-assembled monolayers (SAM) were designed and applied for binding streptavidin, promoting affinity biosensing and enzyme activity on gold surfaces of sensors. The synthesis of 1-((+)-biotin)pentanamido)propyl)-3-(12-mercaptododecyl)-imidazolium bromide, a biotinylated ionic liquid (IL-biotin), which self-assembles on gold film, afforded streptavidin sensing with surface plasmon resonance (SPR). The IL-biotin-SAM efficiently formed a full streptavidin monolayer. The synthesis of 1-(carboxymethyl)-3-(mercaptododecyl)-imidazoliumbromide, a carboxylated IL (IL-COOH), was used to immobilize anti-IgG to create an affinity biosensor. The IL-COOH demonstrated efficient detection of IgG in the nanomolar concentration range, similar to the alkylthiols SAM and PEG. In addition, the IL-COOH demonstrated low fouling in crude serum, to a level equivalent to PEG. The IL-COOH was further modified with N,N'-bis (carboxymethyl)-l-lysine hydrate to bind copper ions and then, chelate histidine-tagged biomolecules. Human dihydrofolate reductase (hDHFR) was chelated to the modified IL-COOH. By monitoring enzyme activity in situ on the SPR sensor, it was revealed that the IL-COOH SAM improved the activity of hDHFR by 24% in comparison to classical SAM. Thereby, IL-SAM has been synthesized and successfully applied to three important biosensing schemes, demonstrating the advantages of this new class of monolayers.

Abstract
In this paper, we studied charge transfer through a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 1-adamantanethiol on gold. Charge transfer through the 1-adamantanethiol SAM depended on the type of anion present when [Fe(CN)6]3- was used as a redox probe. The sluggish charge transfer process was monitored by cyclic voltammetry using the relatively large and hydrophobic perchlorate and hexafluorophosphate ions as the supporting electrolyte. In contrast, the charge transfer kinetics were nearly identical to those measured on bare gold with chloride, sulfate, and nitrate ions as the supporting electrolyte. We investigated the adsorption of alpha- and beta-cyclodextrin on the 1-adamantanethiol SAM via a host-guest interaction. The 1-adamantanethiol SAM could not bind beta-cyclodextrin via a host-guest interaction, probably due to the proximity of neighboring adamantine molecules on the surface. Immobilization of alpha-cyclodextrin by formation of an exterior complex with the SAM suppressed charge transfer. The adsorbed alpha-cyclodextrin was quantified using faradaic impedance experiments. The obtained adsorption isotherm was in good agreement with the Langmuir isotherm with a binding constant of 39.53 M(-1).
