Electrosyntheses and characterizations of novel electrochromic copolymers based on pyrene and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene

Electrochemical copolymerization of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene and dithienothiophene: influence of feed ratio on electrical, optical and electrochromic properties

Designing a copolymer is an efficient and alternative method to generate new chemical and physical properties compared to parent homopolymers without complex synthesis and structural modification. We herein report the electrochemical deposition of copolymer using two monomers 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) and dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene (DTT). Three different copolymers P[EDOT-co-DTT] were synthesized by using different feed ratios of monomers (EDOT and DTT molar ratios in solution are 2 : 1, 1 : 1 and 1 : 2) in acetonitrile containing 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium perchlorate (TBAClO4) as a supporting electrolyte. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy and UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy were employed to characterize the obtained copolymers. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis was used to estimate the composition of EDOT and DTT units in copolymers. The electrochemical and morphological properties were analyzed using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). In situ spectroelectrochemistry and electrochromic studies were performed to investigate the optical and switching properties of the resultant copolymers. The homopolymers poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and polydithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene (PDTT) were also prepared using similar electrochemical conditions and made comparisons where applicable. Computational calculations were done to understand the structure and energy levels of these polymers. It was found that these copolymers P[EDOT-co-DTT] show new properties as compared to homopolymers PEDOT and PDTT for organic electronic applications. Interesting to note that the resultant copolymers display the property of tunable electrochromism with improved transmittance and redox color change between the neutral and oxidized states.

Preparation of a TiO2/PEDOT nanorod film with enhanced electrochromic properties

The designed growth of titanium dioxide (TiO₂)/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanorod arrays has been achieved by the combination of hydrothermal and electrodeposition methods. Due to the use of one-dimensional (1D) TiO₂ nanorod arrays as the template of the nanocomposites (TiO₂/PEDOT), the surface area of the active materials is enlarged and the diffusion distance of the ions is shortened. The nanorod structure also contributes to increasing the length of PEDOT conjugated chains and facilitates the transfer of electrons in the conjugated chains. Consequently, the TiO₂/PEDOT film delivers a shorter response time (∼0.5 s), higher transmittance contrast (∼55.5%) and long-cycle stability compared to the pure PEDOT film. In addition, the TiO₂/PEDOT electrode is further developed to be a smart bi-functional electrochromic device exhibiting energy storage performance. We expect that this work may lead to new designs for powerful intelligent electrochromic energy storage devices.

Theoretical investigation of electrochromic mechanism in D-A conjugated polymers in visible and infrared bands

Electrochromic materials have been widely-applied in military camouflage and intelligent materials, in consideration of the multicolor display and infrared absorption. However, most of them have a narrow width of absorption spectra, and the electrochromic mechanism is still not well understood, especially in materials based on a copolymer structure in visible and infrared bands. Therefore, based on the polaron model, in order to enhance polarizability, we designed an "electronic donors-electronic acceptor" (D-A) type π-conjugated electrochromic polymer, which has an abundant color (wavelengths from 450 nm to 750 nm) with voltage range (from -0.2 V to 1.0 V). Employing first-principle calculations, we investigated the electrochromism of the polymer, which has a strong connection with the introduced new molecular orbital in the polaron (or cation), comparing with those in the neutral molecule. This study addressed the underlying mechanism for the electrochromic phenomenon and the behavior of the cation. It indicated the polaron molecular orbitals provide the photon absorption, whose energies are in the visible range and result in the electrochromic abundant color. In this work, we provide a molecular design for the adjustment of visible and infrared band absorption, which could have broad application in multicolor and infrared electrochromic materials.

The Different Outcomes of Electrochemical Copolymerisation: 3-Hexylthiophene with Indole, Carbazole or Fluorene

Electrochemical polymerisation is reported to be a method for readily producing copolymers of various conjugated molecules. We employed this method for mixtures of indole, carbazole or fluorene with 3-hexylthiophene (HT), in order to obtain their soluble copolymers. Although polymer films were obtained, infrared (IR) and Raman investigations showed that instead of the expected linear copolymers, polyindole and polycarbazole N-substituted with HT, as well as a poly(3-hexylthiophene) (PHT)/polyfluorene blend were produced instead. Boron trifluoride diethyl etherate was also used in an attempt to promote copolymerisation, but the produced deposits were found to be highly degraded.

Solvent effects on electrosynthesis, morphological and electrochromic properties of a nitrogen analog of PEDOT

A new nitrogen analog of 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT), N-methyl-3,4-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]oxazine (MDTO), was electropolymerized in different solvents (deionized water, acetonitrile, and propylene carbonate) using LiClO4 as the electrolyte. The structure and performance of as-prepared PMDTO polymers were systematically studied by cyclic voltammetry, UV-vis spectroscopy, FT-IR, SEM, thermogravimetry, spectroelectrochemistry and electrochromic techniques. To our surprise, solvents had a major influence on the electropolymerization of MDTO and properties of the resultant polymers, including morphology, electrochemistry, electronic and optical properties, and electrochromics, etc. In aqueous solution, MDTO revealed the lowest onset oxidation potential (0.19 V) than in acetonitrile (0.48 V) and propylene carbonate (0.49 V). However, PMDTO films showed rather poor cycling stability in water, while outstanding stability in acetonitrile and propylene carbonate. Films prepared in propylene carbonate displayed a rather smooth morphology, lower band gap (1.65 eV), higher transparency (97.3%) and a contrast ratio (44.6%) at λ = 466 nm. PMDTO films obtained in acetonitrile showed significantly higher coloration efficiency (169.5 cm(2) C(-1)) than in other two solvents (∼ 97.6 cm(2) C(-1)) with a moderate contrast ratio (24.5%).

Solid-state high-throughput screening for color tuning of electrochromic polymers

Diffusion of two monomers and their oxidative copolymerization inside a solid-state gel electrolyte is utilized as a method to match the monomer feed ratio to a color resulting from a conjugated copolymer having a single absorption in the visible region. Here, a combination of two monomers is used to generate a solid-state electrochromic device of any color, except black and green, in the colored state with all other colors going to transmissive sky blue in the bleached state.

Facile and economical synthesis of an electrochromic copolymer for black based on electropolymerization of thiophene and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene

We report the facile and economical synthesis of an electrochromic copolymer for black based on electrochemical copolymerization of thiophene and 3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene in boron trifluoride diethyl etherate. The resultant copolymer presents multicolor electrochromism with reversible color change between drab color and blue black. Furthermore, in the polar state the resultant copolymer shows strong and broad absorption in the whole visible region and then exhibits black color. The copolymer presents a transmittance variation of 25% at 522 nm, and corresponding response times for bleaching and coloration are 4.2 and 3.3 s, respectively. Good electrochemical stability can be achieved by the copolymer film, which retains 87% of its original electroactivity after 2000 cycles.
