Preparation of Pt/poly (2-Methoxyaniline)-sodium dodecyl sulfate composite and its application for electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol and formaldehyde

Flower-like Layered NiCu-LDH/MXene Nanocomposites as an Anodic Material for Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Methanol

Direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) technology has grabbed much attention from researchers worldwide in the realm of green and renewable energy-generating technologies. Practical applications of DMFCs are marked by the development of highly active, efficient, economical, and long-lasting anode catalysts. Layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanohybrids are found to be efficient electrode materials for methanol oxidation. In this study, we synthesized NiCu-LDH/MXene nanocomposites (NCMs) and investigated their electrochemical performance for methanol oxidation. The formation of NCM was verified through field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. The cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, and electron impedance spectroscopy techniques were carried out to assess the electrocatalytic ability of the methanol oxidation reaction. The incorporation of MXene enhanced the methanol oxidation 2-fold times higher than NiCu-LDH. NCM-45 exhibited high peak current density (86.9 mA cm^-2), enhanced electrochemical active surface area (7.625 cm²), and long-term stability (77.8% retention after 500 cycles). The superior performance of NCM can be attributed to the synergistic effect between Ni and Cu and, further, the electronic coupling between LDH and MXene. Based on the results, NCM nanocomposite is an efficient anodic material for the electrocatalytic oxidation of methanol. This study will open the door for the development of various LDH/MXene nanocomposite electrode materials for the application of direct methanol fuel cells.

Valorization of spent double substituted Co-Ni-Zn-Fe LDH wastewater nanoadsorbent as methanol electro-oxidation catalyst

Finding suitable non-expensive electrocatalyst materials for methanol oxidation is a significant challenge. Waste valorization of spent wastewater nanoadsorbents is a promising route toward achieving circular economy guidelines. In this study, the residual of layered double hydroxide (LDH) can be used as an electrocatalyst in direct methanol fuel cells as a novel approach. The Co-Ni-Zn-Fe LDH was prepared by the co-precipitation method followed by the adsorption of methyl orange (MO). Moreover, the spent adsorbent was calcined at different temperatures (200, 400, and 600 °C) to be converted to the corresponding mixed metal oxides (MMO). The prepared samples were characterized using XRD, FTIR, HRTEM, zeta potential, and hydrodynamic size measurements. The spent adsorbent was tested as an electro-catalyst for direct methanol electro-oxidation. The spent LDH/MO adsorbent showed a maximum current density of 6.66 mA/cm² at a 50 mV/s scan rate and a 1 M methanol concentration. The spent MMO/MO adsorbent showed a maximum current density of 8.40 mA/cm² at a 200 °C calcination temperature, 50 mV/s scan rate, and a 3 M methanol concentration. Both samples show reasonable stability over time, as indicated by the chronoamperometric response. Further nanoengineering of used nanoadsorbents could be a promising path to repurposing these wastes as electro-oxidation catalysts.

Ethanol Electrooxidation at Platinum-Rare Earth (RE = Ce, Sm, Ho, Dy) Binary Alloys

Proton exchange membrane fuel cells and direct alcohol fuel cells have been extensively studied over the last three decades or so. They have emerged as potential systems to power portable applications, providing clean energy, and offering good commercial viability. Ethanol is considered one of the most interesting fuels in this field. Herein, platinum-rare earth (Pt-RE) binary alloys (RE = Ce, Sm, Ho, Dy, nominal composition 50 at.% Pt) were produced and studied as anodes for ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in alkaline medium. A Pt-Dy alloy with nominal composition 40 at.% Pt was also tested. Their electrocatalytic performance was evaluated by voltammetric and chronoamperometric measurements in 2 M NaOH solution with different ethanol concentrations (0.2–0.8 M) in the 25–45 °C temperature range. Several EOR kinetic parameters were determined for the Pt-RE alloys, namely the charge transfer and diffusion coefficients, and the number of exchanged electrons. Charge transfer coefficients ranging from 0.60 to 0.69 and n values as high as 0.7 were obtained for the Pt0.5Sm0.5 electrode. The EOR reaction order at the Pt-RE alloys was found to vary between 0.4 and 0.9. The Pt-RE electrodes displayed superior performance for EOR than bare Pt, with Pt0.5Sm0.5 exhibiting the highest electrocatalytic activity. The improved electrocatalytic activity in all of the evaluated Pt-RE binary alloys suggests a strategy for the solution of the existing anode issues due to the structure-sensitive EOR.

Mono and dual hetero-structured M@poly-1,2 diaminoanthraquinone (M = Pt, Pd and Pt–Pd) catalysts for the electrooxidation of small organic fuels in alkaline medium

Oxidation of some small organic fuels such as methanol (MeOH), ethanol (EtOH) and ethylene glycol (EG) was carried out in an alkaline medium using palladium (Pd)–platinum (Pt) nanoparticles/poly1,2-diaminoanthraquinone/glassy carbon (p1,2-DAAQ/GC) catalyst electrodes. Pd and Pt were incorporated into the p1,2-DAAQ/GC electrode using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) technique. The obtained Pd/p1,2-DAAQ/GC, Pt/p1,2-DAAQ/GC, Pt/Pd/p1,2-DAAQ/GC and Pd/Pt/p1,2-DAAQ/GC nanocatalyst electrodes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and CV methods. Real active surface area (A_real) achieved by carbon monoxide (CO) adsorption using differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy (DEMS) technique. The electrochemical activity was evaluated and normalized to A_real per metal loading mass. The electrocatalytic oxidation of the small organic fuels at the prepared nanocatalyst electrodes was studied in 1.0 M NaOH solutions by CV and chronoamperometric (CA) techniques. Pt/Pd/p1,2-DAAQ/GC nanocatalyst electrode exhibited enhanced catalytic activity, better durability and higher tolerance to carbon monoxide generated in the oxidation reaction when compared with the other three studied nanocatalysts. The present investigation suggests that the studied nanocatalysts can be successfully applied in direct oxidation of small organic fuels, especially MeOH.

Electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol at Pd, Pt, Pd/Pt and Pt/Pd nano particles supported on poly 1,8-diaminonaphthalene film in alkaline medium

An ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) in alkaline medium was carried out at palladium (Pd) or platinum (Pt) nanoparticles/poly 1,8-diaminonaphthalene (p1,8-DAN) composite catalyst electrodes. Pd and Pt were incorporated onto a p1,8-DAN/GC electrode by a cyclic voltammetry (CV) strategy. The obtained Pd/p1,8-DAN/GC, Pt/p1,8-DAN/GC, Pt/Pd/p1,8-DAN/GC and Pd/Pt/p1,8-DAN/GC modified electrodes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) techniques. Electrode surface areas (ESAs) of the obtained catalysts were calculated by carbon monoxide (CO) adsorption using differential electrochemical mass spectroscopy (DEMS). The electrocatalytic oxidation of ethanol (EtOH) at the catalyst electrodes was considered in 0.5 M NaOH solutions by CV and chronoamperometric techniques. The catalyst electrodes significantly enhanced the catalytic efficiency for EOR compared to a bare glassy carbon (GC) electrode. Bimetallic catalyst electrodes demonstrate improved catalytic activity, superior durability and higher tolerance to (CO) poison generated in the development of EOR compared with Pd/p1,8-DAN and Pt/p1,8-DAN catalysts, giving priority to Pt/Pd/p1,8-DAN/GC electrodes. Viability parameters, such as NaOH and EtOH concentrations, scan rate and upper potential limits, were examined and analyzed. This study suggests that the prepared catalysts have pronounced potential applications in direct EOR in fuel cells.
