Rational Design of Ultra-Short Anodic Alumina Nanotubes by Short-Time Pulse Anodization

Role of Spectral Resonance Features and Surface Chemistry in the Optical Sensitivity of Light-Confining Nanoporous Photonic Crystals

Nanoporous anodic alumina optical microcavities (NAA-μQVs) with spectrally tunable resonance band and surface chemistry are used as model light-confining photonic crystal (PC) platforms to elucidate the combined effect of spectral light confinement features and surface chemistry on optical sensitivity. These model nanoporous PCs show well-resolved, spectrally tunable resonance bands (RBs), the central wavelength of which is engineered from ∼400 to 800 nm by the period of the input anodization profile. The optical sensitivity of the as-produced (hydrophilic) and dichlorodimethylsilane-functionalized (hydrophobic) NAA-μQVs is studied by monitoring dynamic spectral shifts of their RB upon infiltration with organic- and aqueous-based analytical solutions of equally varying refractive index, from 1.333 to 1.345 RIU. Our findings demonstrate that hydrophilic NAA-μQVs show ∼81 and 35% superior sensitivity to their hydrophobic counterparts for organic- and aqueous-based analytical solutions, respectively. Interestingly, the sensitivity of hydrophilic NAA-μQVs per unit of spectral shift is more than 3-fold higher in organic than in aqueous matrices upon equal change of refractive index, with values of 0.347 ± 0.002 and 0.109 ± 0.001 (nm RIU^-1) nm^-1, respectively. Conversely, hydrophobic NAA-μQVs are found to be slightly more sensitive toward changes of refractive index in aqueous medium, with sensitivities of 0.072 ± 0.002 and 0.066 ± 0.006 (nm RIU^-1) nm^-1 in water- and organic-based analytical solutions, respectively. Our advances provide insights into critical factors determining optical sensitivity in light-confining nanoporous PC structures, with implications across optical sensing applications, and other photonic technologies.

Recent Advances in Nanoporous Anodic Alumina: Principles, Engineering, and Applications

The development of aluminum anodization technology features many stages. With the story stretching for almost a century, rather straightforward-from current perspective-technology, raised into an iconic nanofabrication technique. The intrinsic properties of alumina porous structures constitute the vast utility in distinct fields. Nanoporous anodic alumina can be a starting point for: Templates, photonic structures, membranes, drug delivery platforms or nanoparticles, and more. Current state of the art would not be possible without decades of consecutive findings, during which, step by step, the technique was more understood. This review aims at providing an update regarding recent discoveries-improvements in the fabrication technology, a deeper understanding of the process, and a practical application of the material-providing a narrative supported with a proper background.

Revisiting anodic alumina templates: from fabrication to applications

Anodic porous alumina, -AAO- (also known as nanoporous alumina, nanohole alumina arrays, -NAA- or nanoporous anodized alumina platforms, -NAAP-) has opened new opportunities in a wide range of fields, and is used as an advanced photonic structure for applications in structural coloration and advanced optical biosensing based on the ordered nanoporous structure obtained and as a template to grow nanowires or nanotubes of different materials giving rise to metamaterials with tailored properties. Therefore, understanding the structure of nanoporous anodic alumina templates and knowing how they are fabricated provide a tool for the further design of structures based on them, such as 3D nanoporous structures developed recently. In this work, we review the latest developments related to nanoporous alumina, which is currently a very active field, to provide a solid and thorough reference for all interested experts, both in academia and industry, on these nanostructured and highly useful structures. We present an overview of theories on the formation of pores and self-ordering in alumina, paying special attention to those presented in recent years, and different nanostructures that have been developed recently. Therefore, a wide variety of architectures, ranging from ordered nanoporous structures to diameter changing pores, branched pores, and 3D nanostructures will be discussed. Next, some of the most relevant results using different nanostructured morphologies as templates for the growth of different materials with novel properties and reduced dimensionality in magnetism, thermoelectricity, etc. will be summarised, showing how these structures have influenced the state of the art in a wide variety of fields. Finally, a review on how these anodic aluminium membranes are used as platforms for different applications combined with optical techniques, together with principles behind these applications will be presented, in addition to a hint on the future applications of these versatile nanomaterials. In summary, this review is focused on the most recent developments, without neglecting the basis and older studies that have led the way to these findings. Thus, it gives an updated state-of-the-art review that should be useful not only for experts in the field, but also for non-specialists, helping them to gain a broad understanding of the importance of anodic porous alumina, and most probably, endow them with new ideas for its use in fields of interest or even developing the anodization technique.

Engineering of Broadband Nanoporous Semiconductor Photonic Crystals for Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalysis

A new class of semiconductor photonic crystals composed of titanium dioxide (TiO₂)-functionalized nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) broadband-distributed Bragg reflectors (BDBRs) for visible-light-driven photocatalysis is presented. NAA-BDBRs produced by double exponential pulse anodization (DEPA) show well-resolved, spectrally tunable, broad photonic stop bands (PSBs), the width of which can be precisely tuned from 70 ± 6 to 153 ± 9 nm (in air) by progressive modification of the anodization period in the input DEPA profile. Photocatalytic efficiency of TiO₂-NAA-BDBRs with tunable PSB width upon visible-NIR illumination is studied using three model photodegradation reactions of organics with absorbance bands across the visible spectral regions. Analysis of these reactions allows us to elucidate the interplay of spectral distance between red edge of TiO₂-NAA-BDBRs' PSB, electronic bandgap, and absorbance band of model organics in harnessing visible photons for photocatalysis. Photodegradation reaction efficiency is optimal when the PSB's red edge is spectrally close to the electronic bandgap of the functional semiconductor coating. Photocatalytic performance decreases dramatically when the red edge of the PSB is shifted toward visible wavelengths. However, a photocatalytic recovery is observed when the PSB's red edge is judiciously positioned within the proximity of the absorption band of model organics, indicating that TiO₂-NAA-BDBRs can harness visible electromagnetic waves to speed up photocatalytic reactions by drastically slowing the group velocity of incident photons at specific spectral regions. Our advances provide new opportunities to better understand and engineer light-matter interactions for photocatalysis, using TiO₂-NAA-BDBRs as model nanoporous semiconductor platforms. These high-performing photocatalysts could find broad applicability in visible-NIR light harvesting for environmental remediation, green energy generation, and chemical synthesis.

Magnetic nanoparticle decorated anodic alumina nanotubes for fluorescent detection of cathepsin B

In this work, we present the process to provide anodic alumina nanotubes with magnetic responsivity based on magnetic nanoparticles. We demonstrate the possibility to cause the motion of these composite nanotubes under magnetic field, providing them with guided mobility. The obtained magnetic anodic alumina nanotubes are completely characterized and their potential to undergo selective and effective functionalization, and stimuli-responsive load release is demonstrated. For this purpose, protease-triggered release of fluorescent molecules loaded inside the magnetic anodic alumina nanotubes (MAANTs) by selective functionalization is performed. The inner walls of the MAANTs were selectively covered with protein padding of albumin-fluorescein isothiocyanate conjugate (FITC-BSA) through means of silanization. Protein functionalization was designed to undergo proteolytic hydrolysis in presence of cathepsin B- protease highly expressed during growth and initial stages of tumor metastasis - in order to cleave peptide bond of albumin and release fluorescent fragments of the protein. Proteolytic reaction with the enzyme is performed under acidic conditions. Presented arrangement is an exemplary combination of functionalities - which are vast - and of value for applications like drug delivery and biosensing applications.

Realization of high-quality optical nanoporous gradient-index filters by optimal combination of anodization conditions

High-quality nanoporous anodic alumina gradient-index filters (NAA-GIFs) are realized by sinusoidal pulse anodisation (SPA) of aluminum. A three-level factorial design of experiments is used to determine the effect of three critical anodization parameters -electrolyte temperature, concentration of the electrolyte and anodization time- on the quality of light control in these photonic crystal (PC) structures. Quantitative analysis of the effect of these anodization parameters on the quality of the characteristic photonic stopband (PSB) of NAA-GIFs reveals that all three anodization parameters and their respective combinations have statistically significant effects. However, anodization time is found to have the highest impact on the quality of light control in NAA-GIFs, followed by the electrolyte concentration and its temperature. Our findings demonstrate that NAA-GIFs fabricated under optimal conditions achieve an outstanding quality factor of ∼86 (i.e.∼18% superior to that of other NAA-based PCs reported in the literature). This study provides new insight into optimal anodization conditions to fabricate high-quality NAA-based PC structures, opening new exciting opportunities to integrate these nanoporous PCs as platform materials for light-based technologies requiring a precise control over photons such as ultra-sensitive optical sensors and biosensors, photocatalysts for green energy generation and environmental remediation, optical encoding and lasing.

Tunable Nanoporous Anodic Alumina Photonic Crystals by Gaussian Pulse Anodization

This study presents a Gaussian pulse anodization approach to generate nanoporous photonic crystals with highly tunable and controllable optical properties across the visible-NIR spectrum. Nanoporous anodic alumina Gaussian photonic crystals (NAA-GPCs) are fabricated in oxalic acid electrolyte by Gaussian pulse anodization, a novel form of pulse-like anodization. The effect of the Gaussian pulse width in the anodization profile on the optical properties of these photonic crystals is assessed by systematically varying this fabrication parameter from 5 to 60 s. The optical features of the characteristic photonic stopband (PSB) of NAA-GPCs-the position of the central wavelength, full width at half-maximum, and intensity-are found to be highly dependent on the Gaussian pulse width, the angle of incidence of incoming photons, and the nanopore diameter of NAA-GPCs. The effective medium of NAA-GPCs is assessed by monitoring spectral shifts in their characteristic PSB upon infiltration of their nanoporous structure with analytical solutions of d-glucose of varying concentration (0.0125-1 M). Experimental results are validated and mechanistically described by theoretical simulations, using the Looyenga-Landau-Lifshitz effective medium approximation model. Our findings demonstrate that Gaussian pulse anodization is an effective nanofabrication approach to producing highly sensitive NAA-based PC structures with versatile and tunable PSBs across the spectral regions. The findings provide new exiting opportunities to integrate these unique PC structures into photonic sensors and other platform materials for light-based technologies.

Amorphous Catalysts and Electrochemical Water Splitting: An Untold Story of Harmony

In the near future, sustainable energy conversion and storage will largely depend on the electrochemical splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen. Perceiving this, countless research works focussing on the fundamentals of electrocatalysis of water splitting and on performance improvements are being reported everyday around the globe. Electrocatalysts of high activity, selectivity, and stability are anticipated as they directly determine energy- and cost efficiency of water electrolyzers. Amorphous electrocatalysts with several advantages over crystalline counterparts are found to perform better in electrocatalytic water splitting. There are plenty of studies witnessing performance enhancements in electrocatalysis of water splitting while employing amorphous materials as catalysts. The harmony between the flexibility of amorphous electrocatalysts and electrocatalysis of water splitting (both the oxygen evolution reaction [OER] and the hydrogen evolution reaction [HER]) is one of the untold and unsummarized stories in the field of electrocatalytic water splitting. This Review is devoted to comprehensively discussing the upsurge of amorphous electrocatalysts in electrochemical water splitting. In addition to that, the basics of electrocatalysis of water splitting are also elaborately introduced and the characteristics of a good electrocatalyst for OER and HER are discussed.

Systematic investigation of intracellular trafficking behavior of one-dimensional alumina nanotubes

Nanotube materials exhibit high drug loading capacity and controlled drug release properties, providing new opportunities for drug delivery. However, the intracellular trafficking paths of 1-dimensional (1D) nanostructured materials are poorly understood compared to their spherical counterparts, impeding the broad application of 1D materials as drug carriers. Here, we report the intracellular trafficking mechanism of nontoxic and biocompatible nanomaterials called anodic alumina nanotubes (AANTs), a model for 1D materials with a geometry that can be precisely engineered. The results indicated that AANTs enter the cells mainly by caveolin endocytosis and micropinocytosis and that cells use a novel macropinocytosis-late endosomes (LEs)-lysosomes route to transport AANTs. Moreover, liposomes (marked by DsRed-Rab18) are fully involved in the classical pathway of early endosomes (EEs)/LEs developing into lysosomes. The AANTs were delivered to the cells via two pathways: slow endocytosis recycling and GLUT4 exocytosis vesicles. The AANTs also induced intracellular autophagy and then degraded via the endolysosomal pathway. Blocking endolysosomal pathways using autophagy inhibitors prevented the degradation of AANTs through lysosomes. Our results add new insights into the pathways and mechanisms of intracellular trafficking of AANTs, and suggest that intracellular trafficking and lysosomal degradation are highly interdependent and important for efficient drug delivery, and should be evaluated together for drug carrier development.

Effect of Negative Current on the Microstructure of Oxide Coatings Prepared by Hybrid Pulse Anodization

The oxide coatings were prepared on 6061 Al alloy at different negative current densities in oxalic acid using the hybrid pulse anodization (HPA) method at room temperature. The variation curves of positive and negative voltages with anodization time were recorded. The nanopore diameters and distribution regularities in HPA coatings were analyzed with the Image-Pro Plus software based on field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) images. The results showed that the negative current could reduce the growth rate of HPA coatings, and thus led to a small thickness of the coatings within the same anodization time. Besides, appropriate negative current densities resulted in the better distribution uniformity of nanopores, but the excessive negative current densities tended to cause inferior nanopore arrangement. These were attributed to the existence of the negative current, causing H+ and O2− to move in opposite directions, so that a large number of H+ concentrated on the surface of the HPA coatings, resulting in the accelerated dissolution of the coatings.

Engineering the Slow Photon Effect in Photoactive Nanoporous Anodic Alumina Gradient-Index Filters for Photocatalysis

In this study, we explore for the first time the capabilities of nanoporous anodic alumina gradient-index filters (NAA-GIFs) functionalized with titanium dioxide (TiO₂) photoactive layers to enhance photon-to-electron conversion rates and improve the efficiency of photocatalytic reactions by "slow photon" effect. A set of NAA-GIFs was fabricated by sinusoidal pulse anodization, in which a systematic modification of various anodization parameters (i.e., pore widening time, anodization period, and anodization time) enables the fine-tuning of the photonic stopband (PSB) of these nanoporous photonic crystals (PCs) across the spectral regions. The surface of NAA-GIFs was chemically modified with photoactive layers of TiO₂ to create a composite photoactive material with precisely engineered optical properties. The photocatalytic performance of TiO₂-functionalized NAA-GIFs was assessed by studying the photodegradation of three model organic dyes (i.e., methyl orange, Rhodamine B, and methylene blue) with well-defined absorption bands across different spectral regions under simulated irradiation conditions. Our study demonstrates that when the edges of characteristic PSB of TiO₂-modified NAA-GIFs are completely or partially aligned with the absorption band of the organic dyes, the photodegradation rate is enhanced due to "slow photon" effect. A rational design of the photocatalyst material with respect to the organic dye is demonstrated to be optimal to speed up photocatalytic reactions by an efficient management of photons from high-irradiance spectral regions. This provides new opportunities to develop high-performing photocatalytic materials for efficient photocatalysis with broad applicability.

Engineering of Hybrid Nanoporous Anodic Alumina Photonic Crystals by Heterogeneous Pulse Anodization

In this study, we present an advanced nanofabrication approach, so-called ‘heterogeneous pulse anodization’ (HPA), in which galvanostatic stepwise and apodized sinusoidal pulse anodizations are combined in a single process. This novel anodization method enables the precise optical engineering of the characteristic photonic stopbands (PSBs) of nanoporous anodic alumina photonic crystals (NAA-PCs). The resulting structures are hybrid PCs (Hy-NAA-PCs) composed of distributed Bragg reflectors (DBRs) and apodized gradient-index filters (APO-GIFs) embedded within the same PC structure. The modification of various anodization parameters such as anodization period, relative and total anodization time, structural arrangement of PCs within Hy-NAA-PCs, and pore widening time allows the fine-tuning of the PSBs’ features (i.e. number, position and bandwidth of central wavelength) across the spectral regions. The effects of these fabrication parameters are systematically assessed, revealing that the positions of the characteristic transmission bands of Hy-NAA-PCs are highly controllable. Our study provides a comprehensive rationale towards the development of unique Hy-NAA-PCs with controllable optical properties, which could open new opportunities for a plethora of applications.

On the Precise Tuning of Optical Filtering Features in Nanoporous Anodic Alumina Distributed Bragg Reflectors

This study presents a nanofabrication approach that enables the production of nanoporous anodic alumina distributed Bragg reflectors (NAA-DBRs) with finely engineered light filtering features across the spectral regions. The photonic stopband (PSB) of these NAA-based photonic crystal (PC) structures is precisely tuned by an apodization strategy applied during stepwise pulse anodization with the aim of engineering the effective medium of NAA-DBRs in depth. We systematically assess the effect of different fabrication parameters such as apodization function (i.e. linear positive, linear negative, logarithmic positive and logarithmic negative), amplitude difference (from 0.105 to 0.420 mA cm⁻²), current density offset (from 0.140 to 0.560 mA cm⁻²), anodization period (from 1100 to 1700 s), and pore widening time (from 0 to 6 min) on the quality and central wavelength of the PSB of NAA-DBRs. The PSB’s features these PC structures are demonstrated to be highly tunable with the fabrication parameters, where a logarithmic negative apodization is found to be the most effective function to produce NAA-DBRs with high quality PSBs across the UV-visible-NIR spectrum. Our study establishes that apodized NAA-DBRs are more sensitive to changes in their effective medium than non-apodized NAA-DBRs, making them more suitable sensing platforms to develop advanced optical sensing systems.

Realisation and optical engineering of linear variable bandpass filters in nanoporous anodic alumina photonic crystals

We present the first realisation of linear variable bandpass filters in nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA-LVBPFs) photonic crystal structures. NAA gradient-index filters (NAA-GIFs) are produced by sinusoidal pulse anodisation and used as photonic crystal platforms to generate NAA-LVBPFs. The anodisation period of NAA-GIFs is modified from 650 to 850 s to systematically tune the characteristic photonic stopband of these photonic crystals across the UV-visible-NIR spectrum. Then, the nanoporous structure of NAA-GIFs is gradually widened along the surface under controlled conditions by wet chemical etching using a dip coating approach aiming to create NAA-LVBPFs with finely engineered optical properties. We demonstrate that the characteristic photonic stopband and the iridescent interferometric colour displayed by these photonic crystals can be tuned with precision across the surface of NAA-LVBPFs by adjusting the fabrication and etching conditions. Here, we envisage for the first time the combination of the anodisation period and etching conditions as a cost-competitive, facile, and versatile nanofabrication approach that enables the generation of a broad range of unique LVBPFs covering the spectral regions. These photonic crystal structures open new opportunities for multiple applications, including adaptive optics, hyperspectral imaging, fluorescence diagnostics, spectroscopy, and sensing.

Exceptional room-temperature plasticity in amorphous alumina nanotubes fabricated by magnetic hard anodisation

Crystalline aluminum oxide is a brittle ceramic material. Here we show that individual alumina nanotubes with internal and external radii of ∼15 nm and ∼50 nm, respectively and lengths of the order of 100 μm can be readily separated from amorphous alumina membranes fabricated by a hard anodisation process under a magnetic field of up to 1.5 T. The ceramic nanotubes are extremely flexible and exhibit an exceptional plasticity of ±70% at room temperature without breaking. Elastic properties investigated by the double clamped beam method include a tensile strength of 4.1 GPa, corresponding to a breaking strain of 5%. These values are respectively 17 and 70 times greater than those of polycrystalline alumina fibres. The plasticity of anodic amorphous alumina helps explain the formation of ordered arrays of nanopores in the alumina membranes.

In vivo toxicological assessment of electrochemically engineered anodic alumina nanotubes: a study of biodistribution, subcutaneous implantation and intravenous injection

Electrochemically engineered anodic alumina nanotubes (AANTs) have recently shown good in vitro biocompatibility. However, in vivo toxicological and pathological studies are required to clarify the bio-safety of this novel nanomaterial. Herein, we present a pioneering pilot toxicity study on AANTs in immune-competent murine models (Balb/c mice, 8 weeks). AANTs were administered by intravenous (IV) injection and subcutaneous (SC) implantation routes considering the future toxicological implications associated with this nanomaterial for potential biomedical applications. AANTs, 736 nm long and 90 nm in outer diameter, were chosen as a nanomaterial model. We demonstrate that IV injected AANTs do not have any effect on the mortality or body weight of these animal models within 28 days at three different doses (20, 50, 100 mg kg^-1). The biodistribution of AANTs characterized by fluorescence imaging and inductively coupled plasma revealed the accumulation of AANTs in the liver and spleen after IV injection. When AANTs were injected intravenously, the highest dose of 100 mg kg^-1 caused moderate hepatotoxicity, identified by histopathological analysis. The implantation of AANTs subcutaneously and directly under the skin leads to an inflammatory response, which is a typical foreign body reaction. Taken together, this work provides new insights into the toxicity patterns of new nanomaterials such as AANTs and establishes a rationale for the design of functional AANTs for future biomedical applications.

Fine tuning of optical signals in nanoporous anodic alumina photonic crystals by apodized sinusoidal pulse anodisation

In this study, we present an advanced nanofabrication approach to produce gradient-index photonic crystal structures based on nanoporous anodic alumina. An apodization strategy is for the first time applied to a sinusoidal pulse anodisation process in order to engineer the photonic stop band of nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) in depth. Four apodization functions are explored, including linear positive, linear negative, logarithmic positive and logarithmic negative, with the aim of finely tuning the characteristic photonic stop band of these photonic crystal structures. We systematically analyse the effect of the amplitude difference (from 0.105 to 0.840 mA cm^-2), the pore widening time (from 0 to 6 min), the anodisation period (from 650 to 950 s) and the anodisation time (from 15 to 30 h) on the quality and the position of the characteristic photonic stop band and the interferometric colour of these photonic crystal structures using the aforementioned apodization functions. Our results reveal that a logarithmic negative apodisation function is the most optimal approach to obtain unprecedented well-resolved and narrow photonic stop bands across the UV-visible-NIR spectrum of NAA-based gradient-index photonic crystals. Our study establishes a fully comprehensive rationale towards the development of unique NAA-based photonic crystal structures with finely engineered optical properties for advanced photonic devices such as ultra-sensitive optical sensors, selective optical filters and all-optical platforms for quantum computing.

Rational engineering of nanoporous anodic alumina optical bandpass filters

Herein, we present a rationally designed advanced nanofabrication approach aiming at producing a new type of optical bandpass filters based on nanoporous anodic alumina photonic crystals. The photonic stop band of nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) is engineered in depth by means of a pseudo-stepwise pulse anodisation (PSPA) approach consisting of pseudo-stepwise asymmetric current density pulses. This nanofabrication method makes it possible to tune the transmission bands of NAA at specific wavelengths and bandwidths, which can be broadly modified across the UV-visible-NIR spectrum through the anodisation period (i.e. time between consecutive pulses). First, we establish the effect of the anodisation period as a means of tuning the position and width of the transmission bands of NAA across the UV-visible-NIR spectrum. To this end, a set of nanoporous anodic alumina bandpass filters (NAA-BPFs) are produced with different anodisation periods, ranging from 500 to 1200 s, and their optical properties (i.e. characteristic transmission bands and interferometric colours) are systematically assessed. Then, we demonstrate that the rational combination of stacked NAA-BPFs consisting of layers of NAA produced with different PSPA periods can be readily used to create a set of unique and highly selective optical bandpass filters with characteristic transmission bands, the position, width and number of which can be precisely engineered by this rational anodisation approach. Finally, as a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate that the superposition of stacked NAA-BPFs produced with slight modifications of the anodisation period enables the fabrication of NAA-BPFs with unprecedented broad transmission bands across the UV-visible-NIR spectrum. The results obtained from our study constitute the first comprehensive rationale towards advanced NAA-BPFs with fully controllable photonic properties. These photonic crystal structures could become a promising alternative to traditional optical bandpass filters based on glass and plastic.

Structural Engineering of Nanoporous Anodic Alumina Photonic Crystals by Sawtooth-like Pulse Anodization

This study presents a sawtooth-like pulse anodization approach aiming to create a new type of photonic crystal structure based on nanoporous anodic alumina. This nanofabrication approach enables the engineering of the effective medium of nanoporous anodic alumina in a sawtooth-like manner with precision. The manipulation of various anodization parameters such as anodization period, anodization amplitude, number of anodization pulses, ramp ratio and pore widening time allows a precise control and fine-tuning of the optical properties (i.e., characteristic transmission peaks and interferometric colors) exhibited by nanoporous anodic alumina photonic crystals (NAA-PCs). The effect of these anodization parameters on the photonic properties of NAA-PCs is systematically evaluated for the establishment of a fabrication methodology toward NAA-PCs with tunable optical properties. The effective medium of the resulting NAA-PCs is demonstrated to be optimal for the development of optical sensing platforms in combination with reflectometric interference spectroscopy (RIfS). This application is demonstrated by monitoring in real-time the formation of monolayers of thiol molecules (11-mercaptoundecanoic acid) on the surface of gold-coated NAA-PCs. The obtained results reveal that the adsorption mechanism between thiol molecules and gold-coated NAA-PCs follows a Langmuir isotherm model, indicating a monolayer sorption mechanism.

Assessment of Binding Affinity between Drugs and Human Serum Albumin Using Nanoporous Anodic Alumina Photonic Crystals

In this study, we report an innovative approach aiming to assess the binding affinity between drug molecules and human serum albumin by combining nanoporous anodic alumina rugate filters (NAA-RFs) modified with human serum albumin (HSA) and reflectometric interference spectroscopy (RIfS). NAA-RFs are photonic crystal structures produced by sinusoidal pulse anodization of aluminum that present two characteristic optical parameters, the characteristic reflection peak (λPeak), and the effective optical thickness of the film (OTeff), which can be readily used as sensing parameters. A design of experiments strategy and an ANOVA analysis are used to establish the effect of the anodization parameters (i.e., anodization period and anodization offset) on the sensitivity of HSA-modified NAA-RFs toward indomethacin, a model drug. To this end, two sensing parameters are used, that is, shifts in the characteristic reflection peak (ΔλPeak) and changes in the effective optical thickness of the film (ΔOTeff). Subsequently, optimized NAA-RFs are used as sensing platforms to determine the binding affinity between a set of drugs (i.e., indomethacin, coumarin, sulfadymethoxine, warfarin, and salicylic acid) and HSA molecules. Our results verify that the combination of HSA-modified NAA-RFs with RIfS can be used as a portable, low-cost, and simple system for establishing the binding affinity between drugs and plasma proteins, which is a critical factor to develop efficient medicines for treating a broad range of diseases and medical conditions.

Nanoporous hard data: optical encoding of information within nanoporous anodic alumina photonic crystals

Herein, we present a method for storing binary data within the spectral signature of nanoporous anodic alumina photonic crystals. A rationally designed multi-sinusoidal anodisation approach makes it possible to engineer the photonic stop band of nanoporous anodic alumina with precision. As a result, the transmission spectrum of these photonic nanostructures can be engineered to feature well-resolved and selectively positioned characteristic peaks across the UV-visible spectrum. Using this property, we implement an 8-bit binary code and assess the versatility and capability of this system by a series of experiments aiming to encode different information within the nanoporous anodic alumina photonic crystals. The obtained results reveal that the proposed nanosized platform is robust, chemically stable, versatile and has a set of unique properties for data storage, opening new opportunities for developing advanced nanophotonic tools for a wide range of applications, including sensing, photonic tagging, self-reporting drug releasing systems and secure encoding of information.

Realisation and advanced engineering of true optical rugate filters based on nanoporous anodic alumina by sinusoidal pulse anodisation

This study is the first realisation of true optical rugate filters (RFs) based on nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA) by sinusoidal waves. An innovative and rationally designed sinusoidal pulse anodisation (SPA) approach in galvanostatic mode is used with the aim of engineering the effective medium of NAA in a sinusoidal fashion. A precise control over the different anodisation parameters (i.e. anodisation period, anodisation amplitude, anodisation offset, number of pulses, anodisation temperature and pore widening time) makes it possible to engineer the characteristic reflection peaks and interferometric colours of NAA-RFs, which can be finely tuned across the UV-visible-NIR spectrum. The effect of the aforementioned anodisation parameters on the photonic properties of NAA-RFs (i.e. characteristic reflection peaks and interferometric colours) is systematically assessed in order to establish for the first time a comprehensive rationale towards NAA-RFs with fully controllable photonic properties. The experimental results are correlated with a theoretical model (Looyenga-Landau-Lifshitz - LLL), demonstrating that the effective medium of these photonic nanostructures can be precisely described by the effective medium approximation. NAA-RFs are also demonstrated as chemically selective photonic platforms combined with reflectometric interference spectroscopy (RIfS). The resulting optical sensing system is used to assess the reversible binding affinity between a model drug (i.e. indomethacin) and human serum albumin (HSA) in real-time. Our results demonstrate that this system can be used to determine the overall pharmacokinetic profile of drugs, which is a critical aspect to be considered for the implementation of efficient medical therapies.

Bioinert Anodic Alumina Nanotubes for Targeting of Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress and Autophagic Signaling: A Combinatorial Nanotube-Based Drug Delivery System for Enhancing Cancer Therapy

Although nanoparticle-based targeted delivery systems have gained promising achievements for cancer therapy, the development of sophisticated strategies with effective combinatorial therapies remains an enduring challenge. Herein, we report the fabrication of a novel nanomaterial, so-called anodic alumina nanotubes (AANTs) for proof-of-concept cancer therapy by targeting cell signaling networks. This strategy is to target autophagic and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress signaling by using thapsigargin (TG)-loaded AANTs cotreated with an autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine (3-MA). We first show that AANTs are nontoxic and can activate autophagy in different cell types including human fibroblast cells (HFF), human monocyte cells (THP-1), and human breast cancer cells (MDA-MB 231-TXSA). Treatment with 3-MA at a nontoxic dose reduced the level of autophagy induced by AANTs, and consequently sensitized breast cancer cells to AANTs-induced cellular stresses. To target autophagic and ER stress signaling networking, breast cancer cells were treated with 3-MA together with AANTs loaded with the prototype ER stress inducer TG. We demonstrated that 3-MA enhanced the cancer cell killing effect of AANTs loaded with TG. This effect was associated with enhanced ER stress signaling due to the combination effect of TG and 3-MA. These findings not only demonstrate the excellent biocompatibility of AANTs as novel biomaterials but also provide new opportunities for developing ER- and autophagy-targeted delivery systems for future clinical cancer therapy.

Biomimetic Nanoporous Anodic Alumina Distributed Bragg Reflectors in the Form of Films and Microsized Particles for Sensing Applications

In this study, we produce for the first time biomimetic films and microsized particles based on nanoporous anodic alumina distributed Bragg reflectors (NAA-DBRs) by a rational galvanostatic pulse-anodization approach. These biomimetic photonic structures can feature a broad range of vivid bright colors, which can be tuned across the UV-visible spectrum by engineering their nanoporous structure through different anodization parameters. The effective medium of NAA-DBRs films is systematically assessed as a function of the anodization period, the anodization temperature, and the current density ratio by reflectometric interference spectroscopy (RIfS). This analysis makes it possible to establish the most sensitive structure toward changes in its effective medium. Subsequently, specific detection of vitamin C molecules is demonstrated. The obtained results reveal that NAA-DBRs with optimized structure can achieve a low limit of detection for vitamin C molecules as low as 20 nM, a sensitivity of 227±4 nm μM(-1), and a linearity of 0.9985. Finally, as proof of concept, we developed a new photonic nanomaterial based on NAA-DBR microsized particles, which could provide new opportunities to produce microsized photonic analytical tools.

Rational Design of Photonic Dust from Nanoporous Anodic Alumina Films: A Versatile Photonic Nanotool for Visual Sensing

Herein, we present a systematic study on the development, optimisation and applicability of interferometrically coloured distributed Bragg reflectors based on nanoporous anodic alumina (NAA-DBRs) in the form of films and nanoporous microparticles as visual/colorimetric analytical tools. Firstly, we synthesise a complete palette of NAA-DBRs by galvanostatic pulse anodisation approach, in which the current density is altered in a periodic fashion in order to engineer the effective medium of the resulting photonic films in depth. NAA-DBR photonic films feature vivid colours that can be tuned across the UV-visible-NIR spectrum by structural engineering. Secondly, the effective medium of the resulting photonic films is assessed systematically by visual analysis and reflectometric interference spectroscopy (RIfS) in order to establish the most optimal nanoporous platforms to develop visual/colorimetric tools. Then, we demonstrate the applicability of NAA-DBR photonic films as a chemically selective sensing platform for visual detection of mercury(II) ions. Finally, we generate a new nanomaterial, so-called photonic dust, by breaking down NAA-DBRs films into nanoporous microparticles. The resulting microparticles (μP-NAA-DBRs) display vivid colours and are sensitive towards changes in their effective medium, opening new opportunities for developing advanced photonic nanotools for a broad range of applications.

Facile synthesis of optical microcavities by a rationally designed anodization approach: tailoring photonic signals by nanopore structure

Structural engineering of porous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) nanostructures by anodization has been extensively studied in the past two decades. However, the transition of this technique into the fabrication of AAO-based one-dimensional photonic crystal is still challenging. Herein, we report for the first time on the fabrication of AAO optical microcavities by a rationally designed anodization approach. In our study, two feasible methods are used to fabricate microcavities with tunable resonance peak across the visible and near-infrared spectra. Distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) nanostructures are first fabricated by pulse anodization approach, in which the anodization voltage was periodically manipulated to achieve pseudosinusoidal modulation of the effective refractive index gradient along the depth of the AAO nanostructures. Microcavities were created by creating a nanoporous layer of constant porosity between two AAO-DBR nanostructures, and by introducing a shift of the phase of the porosity gradient along the depth of AAO. The position of the resonance peak in these microcavities can be linearly tuned by means of the duration of the high voltage anodization. These optical nanostructures are sensitive to alterations of the effective media inside the nanopores. The AAO microcavity shows a central wavelength shift of 2.58 ± 0.37 nm when exposed to water vapor. Our research highlights the feasibility of anodization technique to fabricate AAO-based photonic nanostructures for advanced sensing applications.
