Optimization of Lead-free Organic–inorganic Tin(II) Halide Perovskite Semiconductors by Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy

The Role of Optimal Electron Transfer Layers for Highly Efficient Perovskite Solar Cells-A Systematic Review

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs), which are constructed using organic-inorganic combination resources, represent an upcoming technology that offers a competitor to silicon-based solar cells. Electron transport materials (ETMs), which are essential to PSCs, are attracting a lot of interest. In this section, we begin by discussing the development of the PSC framework, which would form the foundation for the requirements of the ETM. Because of their exceptional electronic characteristics and low manufacturing costs, perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have emerged as a promising proposal for future generations of thin-film solar energy. However, PSCs with a compact layer (CL) exhibit subpar long-term reliability and efficacy. The quality of the substrate beneath a layer of perovskite has a major impact on how quickly it grows. Therefore, there has been interest in substrate modification using electron transfer layers to create very stable and efficient PSCs. This paper examines the systemic alteration of electron transport layers (ETLs) based on electron transfer layers that are employed in PSCs. Also covered are the functions of ETLs in the creation of reliable and efficient PSCs. Achieving larger-sized particles, greater crystallization, and a more homogenous morphology within perovskite films, all of which are correlated with a more stable PSC performance, will be guided by this review when they are developed further. To increase PSCs' sustainability and enable them to produce clean energy at levels previously unheard of, the difficulties and potential paths for future research with compact ETLs are also discussed.

Structural Modification Strategies, Interfacial Charge-Carrier Dynamics, and Solar Energy Conversion Applications of Organic-Inorganic Halide Perovskite Photocatalysts

Over the past few decades, organic-inorganic halide perovskites (OIHPs) as novel photocatalyst materials have attracted intensive attention for an impressive variety of photocatalytic applications due to their excellent photophysical (chemical) properties. Regarding practical application and future commercialization, the air-water stability and photocatalytic performance of OIHPs need to be further improved. Accordingly, studying modification strategies and interfacial interaction mechanisms is crucial. In this review, the current progress in the development and photocatalytic fundamentals of OIHPs is summarized. Furthermore, the structural modification strategies of OIHPs, including dimensionality control, heterojunction design, encapsulation techniques, and so on for the enhancement of charge-carrier transfer and the enlargement of long-term stability, are elucidated. Subsequently, the interfacial mechanisms and charge-carrier dynamics of OIHPs during the photocatalytic process are systematically specified and classified via diverse photophysical and electrochemical characterization methods, such as time-resolved photoluminescence measurements, ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements, transient photocurrent densities, and so forth. Eventually, various photocatalytic applications of OIHPs, including hydrogen evolution, CO2 reduction, pollutant degradation, and photocatalytic conversion of organic matter.

Bandgap Funneling in Bismuth-Based Hybrid Perovskite Photocatalyst with Efficient Visible-Light-Driven Hydrogen Evolution

The photocatalytic system using hydrohalic acid (HX) for hydrogen production is a promising strategy to generate clean and renewable fuels as well as value-added chemicals (such as X₂ /X₃ ^- ). However, it is still challenging to develop a visible-light active and strong-acid resistive photocatalyst. Hybrid perovskites have been recognized as a potential photocatalyst for photovoltaic HX splitting. Herein, a novel environmentally friendly mixed halide perovskite MA₃ Bi₂ Cl_9-x I_x with a bandgap funnel structure is developed, i.e., confirmed by energy dispersive X-ray analysis and density functional theory calculations. Due to gradient neutral formation energy within iodine-doped MA₃ Bi₂ Cl₉ , the concentration of iodide element decreases from the surface to the interior across the MA₃ Bi₂ Cl_9-x I_x perovskite. Because of the aligned energy levels of iodide/chloride-mixed MA₃ Bi₂ Cl_9-x I_x , a graded bandgap funnel structure is therefore formed, leading to the promotion of photoinduced charge transfer from the interior to the surface for efficient photocatalytic redox reaction. As a result, the hydrogen generation rate of the optimized MA₃ Bi₂ Cl_9-x I_x is enhanced up to ≈341 ± 61.7 µmol h^-1 with a Pt co-catalyst under visible light irradiation.

Suppressing photoinduced charge recombination at the BiVO4||NiOOH junction by sandwiching an oxygen vacancy layer for efficient photoelectrochemical water oxidation

Nickel oxyhydroxide (NiOOH) is regarded as one of the promising cocatalysts to enhance the catalytic performance of photoanodes but suffers from serious interfacial charge-carrier recombination at the photoanode||NiOOH interface. In this work, surface-engineered BiVO₄ photoanodes are fabricated by sandwiching an oxygen vacancy (O_vac) interlayer between BiVO₄ and NiOOH. The surface O_vac interlayer is introduced on BiVO₄ by a chemical reduction treatment using a mild reducing agent, sodium hypophosphite. The induced O_vac can alleviate the interfacial charge-carrier recombination at the BiVO4||NiOOH junction, resulting in efficient charge separation and transfer efficiencies, while an outer NiOOH layer is coated to prevent the O_vac layer from degradation. As a result, the as-prepared NiOOH-P-BiVO₄ photoanode exhibits a high photocurrent density of 3.2 mA cm^-2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE under the irradiation of 100 mW/cm² AM 1.5G simulated sunlight, in comparison to those of bare BiVO₄, P-BiVO_4, and NiOOH-BiVO₄ photoanodes (1.1, 2.1 and 2.3 mA cm^-2, respectively). In addition to the superior photoactivity, the 5-h amperometric measurements illustrate improved stability of the surface-engineered NiOOH-P-BiVO₄ photoanode. Our work showcases the feasibility of combining cocatalysts with O_vac, for improved photoactivity and stability of photoelectrodes.

Transparent Ultramicroelectrodes for Studying Interfacial Charge-Transfer Kinetics of Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation at TiO2 Nanorods with Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy

Scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) has been extensively applied to the electrochemical analysis of the surfaces and interfaces of a photoelectrochemical (PEC) system. A semiconductor photoelectrode with a well-defined geometry and active surface area comparable to SECM's tip is highly desired for accurately quantifying interfacial charge-transfer activities and photoelectrochemically generated redox species, where the broadening effects due to the mass transfer gradient and nonlocal electron transfer at a planar semiconductor surface can be minimized. Here, we present a newly developed platform as a SECM substrate for investigating semiconductor PEC activities, which is based on a transparent ultramicroelectrode (UME) fabricated by using two-step photolithographic patterning and ion milling methods. This transparent UME with a 25 μm recessed disk shape is fully characterized with SECM for quantifying the interfacial charge-transfer rates of IrCl₆^2-/IrCl₆^3- by comparing with theoretical results from finite element simulations in COMSOL Multiphysics. When coated with TiO₂ nanorods as a model semiconductor material, the transparent UME can be used to quantify the catalytic PEC water oxidation in a feedback mode of SECM by sampling tip and substrate current signals simultaneously. This transparent UME-SECM study provides insights into the potential-dependent PEC water oxidation reaction mechanism and the quantitative analysis of photocurrent contributions from water oxidation and the SECM tip-generated redox mediator. The transparent UME-SECM method can be potentially expanded to other SECM operation modes such as surface interrogation for understanding the dynamics of the electrode surfaces and interfaces of a PEC system.

Improving the Catalytic CO2 Reduction on Cs2AgBiBr6 by Halide Defect Engineering: A DFT Study

Pb-free double halide perovskites have drawn immense attention in the potential photocatalytic application, due to the regulatable bandgap energy and nontoxicity. Herein, we first present a study for CO2 conversion on Pb-free halide perovskite Cs2AgBiBr6 under state-of-the-art first-principles calculation with dispersion correction. Compared with the previous CsPbBr3, the cell parameter of Cs2AgBiBr6 underwent only a small decrease of 3.69%. By investigating the adsorption of CO, CO2, NO, NO2, and catalytic reduction of CO2, we found Cs2AgBiBr6 exhibits modest adsorption ability and unsatisfied potential determining step energy of 2.68 eV in catalysis. We adopted defect engineering (Cl doping, I doping and Br-vacancy) to regulate the adsorption and CO2 reduction behavior. It is found that CO2 molecule can be chemically and preferably adsorbed on Br-vacancy doped Cs2AgBiBr6 with a negative adsorption energy of -1.16 eV. Studying the CO2 reduction paths on pure and defect modified Cs2AgBiBr6, Br-vacancy is proved to play a critical role in decreasing the potential determining step energy to 1.25 eV. Finally, we probe into the electronic properties and demonstrate Br-vacancy will not obviously promote the process of catalysis deactivation, as there is no formation of deep-level electronic states acting as carrier recombination center. Our findings reveal the process of gas adsorption and CO2 reduction on novel Pb-free Cs2AgBiBr6, and propose a potential strategy to improve the efficiency of catalytic CO2 conversion towards practical implementation.

Photocorrosion at Irradiated Perovskite/Electrolyte Interfaces

Metal-halide perovskites transformed optoelectronics research and development during the past decade. They have also gained a foothold in photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical processes recently, but their sensitivity to the most commonly applied solvents and electrolytes together with their susceptibility to photocorrosion hinders such applications. Understanding the elementary steps of photocorrosion of these materials can aid the endeavor of realizing stable devices. In this Perspective, we discuss both thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of photocorrosion processes occurring at the interface of perovskite photocatalysts and photoelectrodes with different electrolytes. We show how combined in situ and operando electrochemical techniques can reveal the underlying mechanisms. Finally, we also discuss emerging strategies to mitigate photocorrosion (such as surface protection, materials and electrolyte engineering, etc.).

Lead-free hybrid perovskites for photovoltaics

This review covers the state-of-the-art in organo-inorganic lead-free hybrid perovskites (HPs) and applications of these exciting materials as light harvesters in photovoltaic systems. Special emphasis is placed on the influence of the spatial organization of HP materials both on the micro- and nanometer scale on the performance and stability of perovskite-based solar light converters. This review also discusses HP materials produced by isovalent lead(II) substitution with Sn2+ and other metal(II) ions, perovskite materials formed on the basis of M3+ cations (Sb3+, Bi3+) as well as on combinations of M+/M3+ ions aliovalent to 2Pb2+ (Ag+/Bi3+, Ag+/Sb3+, etc.). The survey is concluded with an outlook highlighting the most promising strategies for future progress of photovoltaic systems based on lead-free perovskite compounds.

Ruthenium and manganese metalloporphyrins modified screen-printed electrodes for bio-relevant electroactive targets

Ruthenium(II) 5-(4[Formula: see text]-sulfanylmethylphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin (Ru-TPP-SH) and manganese(III) 5-(4[Formula: see text]-sulfanylmethylphenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin (Mn-TPP-SH) were synthesized, spectroscopically characterized and drop casted to modify screen-printed electrodes (SPEs). The modified SPEs were then tested against the redox target [Fe(CN)6][Formula: see text] in comparison with the bare SPE and SPE modified with the free porphyrin. The best performing one, [Formula: see text]. Mn-TPP-SH was used for the electrochemical detection of 1,4–benzoquinone, serotonin, caffeic and ascorbic acids, the latter also in association with uric acid, showing good electrocatalytic properties. The tunability of the metal-TPP-SH through the choice of the coordinating metal, the drop casting conditions and possible further functionalization make this type of porphyrin a good candidate for further developments of porphyrin-modified SPEs.
