Abstract
Poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP)-based gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are considered a promising electrolyte candidate for polymer lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their free-standing shape, versatility, security, flexibility, lightweight, reliability, and so on. However, due to problems such as low ionic conductivity, PVDF-HFP can only be used on a small scale when used as a substrate alone. To overcome the above shortcomings, GPEs were designed and synthesized by a UV curing process by adding NASICON-type Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP) and garnet-type Li6.46La3Zr1.46Ta0.54O12 (LLZTO) to PVDF-HFP. Experimentally, GPEs with 10% weight LLZTO in a PVDF-HFP matrix had an ionic conductivity of up to 3 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 25 °C. When assembled into LiFePO4/GPEs/Li batteries, a discharge-specific capacity of 81.5 mAh g-1 at a current density of 1 C and a capacity retention rate of 98.1% after 100 cycles at a current density of 0.2 C occurred. Therefore, GPEs added to LLZTO have a broad application prospect regarding rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract
A lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is a promising candidate for an electrochemical energy-storage system. However, for a long time, it suffered from the "shuttle effect" of the intermediate products of soluble polysulfides and safety issues concerning the combustible liquid electrolyte and lithium anode. In this work, sulfide polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) is employed as a solid cycled cathode to resolve the "shuttle effect" fundamentally, a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) based on poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) is matched to the SPAN cathode to minimize the safety concerns, and finally, a quasi-solid-state Li-SPAN battery is combined by an in situ thermal polymerization strategy to improve its adaptability to the existing battery assembly processes. The PEGDA-based GPE achieved at 60 °C for 40 min ensures little damage to the in situ battery, a good electrode-electrolyte interface, a high ionic conductivity of 6.87 × 10-3 S cm-1 at 30 °C, and a wide electrochemical window of 4.53 V. Ultimately, the as-prepared SPAN composite exerts a specific capacity of 1217.3 mAh g-1 after 250 cycles at 0.2 C with a high capacity retention rate of 89.9%. The combination of the SPAN cathode and in situ thermally polymerized PEGDA-based GPE provides a new inspiration for the design of Li-SPAN batteries with both high specific energy and high safety.

Abstract
Calcium-ion batteries emerged as a potential sustainable alternative energy storage system; however, there remains the need to further develop electrolytes to improve their performance. We report a gel polymer electrolyte (GPE)-based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for calcium ion conduction. The gel electrolyte was synthesized by combining a PVDF polymer host, Ca(TFSI)2 salt, and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) solvent. Using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, we analyze the effect of salt concentration and drying temperature on the degree of salt dissociation in the electrolyte. Our results show that the concentration of free cations in the electrolyte is primarily coordinated with NMP as well as PVDF, generating a suitable network for ion transport, i.e., a liquid electrolyte encompassed within a polymer matrix. We find that processing conditions such as drying temperature, which varies solvent content, play a critical role in developing polymer electrolytes that demonstrate optimal electrochemical performance. The GPEs are semicrystalline and stable up to 120 °C, which is critical for their use in applications such as in electric vehicles and renewable energy storage systems. The ionic conductivity of the GPEs exhibit Arrhenius-type behavior, and the total ionic conductivity at room temperature is suitable for applications, with values of 0.85 × 10-4 S/cm for 0.5 M and 3.56 × 10-4 S/cm for 1.0 M concentrations. The results indicate that the GPE exhibits high conductivity and good stability, making it a promising candidate for use in high-performance calcium ion batteries.

Abstract
The application of rechargeable lithium batteries involves all aspects of our daily life, such as new energy vehicles, computers, watches and other electronic mobile devices, so it is becoming more and more important in contemporary society. However, commercial liquid rechargeable lithium batteries have safety hazards such as leakage or explosion, all-solid-state lithium rechargeable lithium batteries will become the best alternatives. But the biggest challenge we face at present is the large solid-solid interface contact resistance between the solid electrolyte and the electrode as well as the low ionic conductivity of the solid electrolyte. Due to the large relative molecular mass, polymers usually exhibit solid or gel state with good mechanical strength. The intermolecules are connected by covalent bonds, so that the chemical and physical stability, corrosion resistance, high temperature resistance and fire resistance are good. Many researchers have found that polymers play an important role in improving the performance of all-solid-state lithium rechargeable batteries. This review mainly describes the application of polymers in the fields of electrodes, electrolytes, electrolyte-electrode contact interfaces, and electrode binders in all-solid-state lithium rechargeable batteries, and how to improve battery performance. This review mainly introduces the recent applications of polymers in solid-state lithium battery electrodes, electrolytes, electrode binders, etc., and describes the performance of emerging porous polymer materials and materials based on traditional polymers in solid-state lithium batteries. The comparative analysis shows the application advantages and disadvantages of the emerging porous polymer materials in this field which provides valuable reference information for further development.

Abstract
The stability and wide temperature performance range of solid electrolytes are the keys to the development of high-energy density all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries. In this work, a PVDF-HFP-LiClO4-Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) composite solid electrolyte was prepared using the solution pouring method. The PVDF-HFP-LiClO4-LLZTO composite solid electrolyte shows excellent electrochemical performance in the temperature range of 30 to 60 °C. By assembling this electrolyte into the battery, the LiFePO4/PVDF-HFP-LiClO4-LLZTO/Li battery shows outstanding electrochemical performance in the temperature range of 30 to 60 °C. The ionic conductivity of the composite electrolyte membrane at 30 °C and 60 °C is 5.5 × 10-5 S cm-1 and 1.0 × 10-5 S cm-1, respectively. At a current density of 0.2 C, the LiFePO4/PVDF-HFP-LiClO4-LLZTO/Li battery shows a high initial specific discharge capacity of 133.3 and 167.2 mAh g-1 at 30 °C and 60 °C, respectively. After 50 cycles, the reversible electrochemical capacity of the battery is 121.5 and 154.6 mAh g-1 at 30 °C and 60 °C; the corresponding capacity retention rates are 91.2% and 92.5%, respectively. Therefore, this work provides an effective strategy for the design and preparation of solid-state lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract
Incorporation of ceramic materials into separators has been frequently applied in both research and industry to improve the overall high-temperature performances of lithium ion batteries. However, inorganic ceramic particles tend to form aggregation in separators and even fall off in the separator matrix due to the inferior combination between ceramic particles and polymer matrix, giving rise to a decrease in separator porosity and thus the degradation of battery performances. Herein, a single-layer core-shell architecture is designed to reinforce the polymer matrix through encircling Al2 O3 particles by poly(vinylidene fluoride) with strong inter-molecular interaction. The 3D-reinforced microstructure effectively improves pore distribution and thermal stability to resist the dimensional deformation at high temperatures, thus giving rise to a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.16% and 87.5% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 80 °C for LiFePO4 /Li batteries. In particular, the excellent performances of the proposed separator microstructure are confirmed with a thickness value of commercial separators. This work provides a promising strategy to fabricate a core-shell structural composite separator for stable lithium ion batteries at high temperatures.

Abstract
Based on gelling matrices and ionic liquids (ILs), monolithic ionogel electrolyte membranes (MIEMs) have become a research focus. However, further application is limited by lack of functional matrices. Herein, we proposed the introduction of an ionized polymer, i.e., polyether polymer with side-chain ionic groups obtained via the reaction of quaternary ammonium with uncrystallizable poly (epichlorohydrin) (PECH), as the matrix into the gels to balance the mechanical properties and the ionic conductivity. In combination with lithium bis-(fluorosulfonyl) imide (LiFSI) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis-(fluorosulfonyl)-imide (EMImFSI) via a solvent casting technique, a flexible MIEM was successfully prepared. The as-obtained MIEM exhibited good thermal stability (up to about 250 °C) and a high ionic conductivity of 1.21 mS cm−1 at 20 °C. Moreover, Li|LiFePO4 coin cells using this MIEM delivered high capacity (150.0 mA h g−1 at 0.2C) with good cycling stability, and an excellent C-rate response. This work discloses a novel and paramount route to exploit PECH-based MIEMs for Li storage, as well as energy storage systems beyond Li. Novel monolithic ionogel electrolyte membrane based on uncrystallizable poly (epichlorohydrin) is prepared, with high thermal stability and high lithium storage.![]()

Abstract
Fluorescent fluorine-doped graphene quantum dots (F-GQDs) have been synthesized via the hydrothermal method using long-chain polymer polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) as the precursor. Due to the unique molecular structure of PVDF, a possible synthesis process of F-GQDs has been put forward. F-GQDs have adjustable emission wavelength by simply adjusting the concentration of the solution. As the concentration increases, the emission wavelength of F-GQDs gradually red shifts from 455 nm (blue) to 551 nm (yellow-green). In addition, F-GQDs also exhibit a sensitive fluorescence response to water content in organic solvents, and the ultralow detections limit are 0.056% in ethanol and 0.124% in DMF. Besides, due to strong UV absorption capacity, a photothermal film is fabricated by embedding F-GQDs in PDMS. The temperature of F-GQDs/PDMS polymer film can reach 33.4 oC under simulated sunlight, while the maximum temperature of blank PDMS film only reach 29.4 oC. Based on this phenomenon, a new type of anti-counterfeiting device is designed by combining F-GQDs/PDMS film with temperature change ink.

Abstract
The preparation of a dextran (Dex)-hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) blend impregnated with ammonium bromide (NH4Br) is done via the solution cast method. The phases due to crystalline and amorphous regions were separated and used to estimate the degree of crystallinity. The most amorphous blend was discovered to be a blend of 40 wt% Dex and 60 wt% HEC. This polymer blend serves as the channel for ions to be conducted and electrodes separator. The conductivity has been optimized at (1.47 ± 0.12) × 10−4 S cm−1 with 20 wt% NH4Br. The EIS plots were fitted with EEC circuits. The DC conductivity against 1000/T follows the Arrhenius model. The highest conducting electrolyte possesses an ionic number density and mobility of 1.58 × 1021 cm−3 and 6.27 × 10−7 V−1s−1 cm2, respectively. The TNM and LSV investigations were carried out on the highest conducting system. A non-Faradic behavior was predicted from the CV pattern. The fabricated electrical double layer capacitor (EDLC) achieved 8000 cycles, with a specific capacitance, internal resistance, energy density, and power density of 31.7 F g−1, 80 Ω, 3.18 Wh kg−1, and 922.22 W kg−1, respectively.

Abstract
Thanks to their high energy density, lithium/sodium metal batteries (LMBs/SMBs) are considered to be the most promising next-generation energy storage system. However, the instability of the electrode/electrolyte interface and dendrite growth seriously hinders commercial application of LMBs/SMBs. In addition, traditional liquid electrolytes are inflammable and explosive. As a key part of the battery, the electrolyte plays an important role in solving the abovementioned problems. Although solid electrolytes can alleviate dendrite growth and liquid electrolyte leakage, their low ionic conductivity and poor interfacial contact are not conducive to improvement of overall LMBs/SMB performances. Therefore, it is necessary to find a balance between liquid and solid electrolytes. Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) are one means for achieving high-performance LMBs/SMBs because they combine the advantages of liquid and solid electrolytes. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) benefit from high specific surface areas, ordered internal porous structures, organic-inorganic hybrid properties, and show great potential in modified electrolytes. Here, Cu-based MOF-supported poly(ethylene oxide) composite gel polymer electrolytes (CGPEs) were prepared by ultraviolet curing. This CGPE exhibited high ionic conductivity, a wide electrochemical window, and a high ion transference number. In addition, it also exhibited excellent cycle stability in symmetric batteries and LMBs/SMBs. This study showed that CGPE had great practical application potential in the next-generation LMBs/SMBs.

Abstract
The growing demand for safer energy storage devices leads to wide research on solid-state lithium-ion batteries. However, as an important component in the solid-state battery, the solid-state electrolyte often encounters problems, especially the low conductivity at room temperature, inhibiting the development of solid-state batteries. Here, improved electrochemical performances of lithium-ion batteries are obtained by designing a composite gel polymer electrolyte with a sponge-like structure. The porous composite gel polymer electrolyte (PCGPE) is developed by a facile phase inversion process of poly(vinylidiene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVdF-HFP) and Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO). The solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance test proves the continuous porous structure constructs fast Li-ion transport pathways on internal interfaces. As a result, the ionic conductivity of PCGPE is up to 5.45 × 10-4 S cm-1 at room temperature. Moreover, an initial capacity of 142.2 mAh g-1 and 82.6% capacity retention at 1 C after 350 cycles are successfully achieved in flexible LiFPO4//PCGPE//Li batteries.

Abstract
Gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) combine the high ionic conductivity of liquid electrolytes and good safety assurance of solid electrolytes. However, the poor interfacial contact between electrode materials and electrolyte is still a big obstacle to the high performance of solid-state batteries. Herein, an integrated cathode/GPE based on continuous composition and preparation technic is obtained by simple UV curing. The improved interfacial contact between cathode and GPE helps to facilitate the fast ions transfer at the interface. Compared with cells assembled with separated cathode and GPE, the cells with integrated cathode-GPE showed much lower interfacial impedance, lower potential polarization and more stable cycling property. This work provided a low-cost natural material gelatin and a simple UV irradiation method to prepare an integrated cathode and gel polymer electrolyte for solid-state lithium batteries. The capacity retention of the cells assembled from integrated structure was 91.4% which was much higher than that of the non-integrated cells (80.9%) after 200 cycles.

Abstract
Zn batteries are usually considered as safe aqueous systems that are promising for flexible batteries. On the other hand, any liquids, including water, being encapsulated in a deformable battery may result in problems. Developing completely liquid-free all-solid-state Zn batteries needs high-quality solid-state electrolytes (SSEs). Herein, we demonstrate in situ polymerized amorphous solid poly(1,3-dioxolane) electrolytes, which show high Zn ion conductivity of 19.6 mS cm-1 at room temperature, low interfacial impedance, highly reversible Zn plating/stripping over 1800 h cycles, uniform and dendrite-free Zn deposition, and non-dry properties. The in-plane interdigital-structure device with the electrolyte completely exposed to the open atmosphere can be operated stably for over 30 days almost without weight loss or electrochemical performance decay. Furthermore, the sandwich-structure device can normally operate over 40 min under exposure to fire. Meanwhile, the interfacial impedance and the capacity using in situ-formed solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) remain almost unchanged after various bending tests, a key criterion for flexible/wearable devices. Our study demonstrates an approach for SSEs that fulfill the requirement of no liquid and mechanical robustness for practical solid-state Zn batteries.

Abstract
Porous membranes fabricated from poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and a star polymer with linear poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) arms and cycloPEG cores were fabricated via the phase-separation method. The porous gel polymer electrolytes (PGPEs) were obtained by immersing the porous membranes in the electrolyte solution. When the additive amount of star polymer was up to 20 wt %, the prepared membrane had the largest porosity and the pores were uniformly distributed in the membrane. The star polymer can not only decrease the crystallization of PVDF and enhance the absorption of liquid electrolyte but also offer ion conduction channels (cycloPEG cores). Therefore, the PGPE with 20 wt % star polymers exhibited competitive ionic conductivities of 1.27 mS cm-1 at 30 °C and 2.89 mS cm-1 at 80 °C. To stabilize the liquid electrolyte in the holes of porous membranes, a gelator was introduced in the liquid electrolyte to form gelled porous gel polymer electrolytes (GPGPEs), and the leakage of liquid electrolytes was thus remarkably reduced. The ionic conductivity of GPGPEs with 20 wt % star polymer and 1.5 wt % gelator was importantly improved at high temperatures (6.02 mS cm-1 at 80 °C). We systematically investigated the electrochemical performances of PGPEs without star polymer, PGPEs with star polymer, and GPGPEs with star polymer. The incorporation of star polymers with linear PEG arms and cycloPEG cores into the PGPEs and GPGPEs significantly improved the electrochemical performances of the lithium metal/LiFePO4 cell assembled with the PGPEs or GPGPEs.

Nylon-Based Composite Gel Membrane Fabricated via Sequential Layer-by-Layer Electrospinning for Rechargeable Lithium Batteries with High Performance. Polymers (Basel) 2020; 12:polym12071572. Abstract
With the raw materials of poly(vinylidene-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP)) and polyamide 6 (PA6, nylon 6), a sandwich-structured composite membrane, PA6/P(VDF-HFP)/PA6, is fabricated via sequential layer-by-layer electrospinning. The nylon-based composite exhibits high absorption to organic liquid electrolyte (270 wt%) owing to its high porosity (90.35%), good mechanical property (17.11 MPa), and outstanding shut-down behavior from approximately 145 to 230 °C. Moreover, the dimensional shrink of a wet PA6 porous membrane immersed into liquid electrolyte is cured due to the existence of the P(VDF-HFP) middle layer. After swelling by the LiPF6-based organic liquid electrolyte, the obtained PA6/P(VDF-HFP)/PA6-based gel polymer electrolytes (GPE) shows high ionic conductivity at room temperature (4.2 mS cm−1), a wide electrochemical stable window (4.8 V), and low activation energy for Li+ ion conduction (4.68 kJ mol−1). Benefiting from the precise porosity structure made of the interlaced electrospinning nanofibers and the superior physicochemical properties of the nylon-based composite GPE, the reversible Li+ ion dissolution/deposition behaviors between the GPE and Li anode are successfully realized with the Li/Li symmetrical cells (current density: 1.0 mA cm−2; areal capacity: 1.0 mAh cm−2) proceeding over 400 h at a polarization voltage of no more than 70 mV. Furthermore, the nylon-based composite GPE in assembled Li/LiFePO4 cells displays good electrochemical stability, high discharge capacity, good cycle durability, and high rate capability. This research provides a new strategy to fabricate gel polymer electrolytes via the electrospinning technique for rechargeable lithium batteries with good electrochemical performance, high security, and low cost.

Abstract
Nanocellulose, a structural polysaccharide that has caught tremendous interests nowadays due to its renewability, inherent biocompatibility and biodegradability, abundance in resource, and environmental friendly nature. They are promising green nanomaterials derived from cellulosic biomass that can be disintegrated into cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) or cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), relying on their sensitivity to hydrolysis at the axial spacing of disordered domains. Owing to their unique mesoscopic characteristics at nanoscale, nanocellulose has been widely researched and incorporated as a reinforcement material in composite materials. The world has been consuming the natural resources at a much higher speed than the environment could regenerate. Today, as an uprising candidate in soft condensed matter physics, a growing interest was received owing to its unique self-assembly behaviour and quantum size effect in the formation of three-dimensional nanostructured material, could be utilised to address an increasing concern over global warming and environmental conservation. In spite of an emerging pool of knowledge on the nanocellulose downstream application, that was lacking of cross-disciplinary study of its role as a soft condensed matter for food, water and energy applications toward environmental sustainability. Here we aim to provide an insight for the latest development of cellulose nanotechnology arises from its fascinating physical and chemical characteristic for the interest of different technology holders.

Abstract
In this work, a side-by-side bicomponent thermoplastic polyurethane/polyimide (TPU/PI) polymer electrolyte prepared with side-by-side electrospinning method is reported for the first time. Symmetrical TPU and PI co-occur on one fiber, and are connected by an interface transition layer formed by the interdiffusion of two solutions. This structure of the as-prepared TPU/PI polymer electrolyte can integrate the advantages of high thermal stable PI and good mechanical strength TPU, and mechanical strength is further increased by those isotropic interface transition layers. Moreover, benefiting from micro-nano pores and the high porosity of the structure, TPU/PI polymer electrolyte presents high electrolyte uptake (665%) and excellent ionic conductivity (5.06 mS·cm-1) at room temperature. Compared with PE separator, TPU/PI polymer electrolyte exhibited better electrochemical stability, and using it as the electrolyte and separator, the assembled Li/LiMn₂O₄ cell exhibits low inner resistance, stable cyclic and notably high rate performance. Our study indicates that the TPU/PI membrane is a promising polymer electrolyte for high safety lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract
The spherical-like and honeycomb structural Li0.1Ca0.9TiO3 particles are prepared by spray drying combined with following calcination confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). The poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP))-based composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs) modified with the particles are fabricated by phase inversion and activation processes. The characterization results show that the as-prepared CPE membranes possess the smoothest surface and most abundant micropores with the lowest crystallinity with adding the particles into the polymer matrix, which results in high ionic conductivity (3.947 mS cm-1) and lithium ion transference number (0.4962) at ambient temperature. The interfacial resistance can be quickly stabilized at 508 Ω after 5 days storage and the electrochemical working window is up to 5.2 V. Moreover, the mechanical strength of the membranes gains significant improvement without lowering the ionic conductivity. Furthermore, the assembled coin cell can also deliver high discharge specific capacity and preserve steady cycle performance at different current densities. Those outstanding properties may be ascribed to the distinctive structure of the tailored spherical-like and honeycomb structural Li0.1Ca0.9TiO3 particles, which can guarantee the desirable CPEs as a new promising candidate for the polymer electrolyte.
