The Pseudocapacitive Nature of CoFe2O4 Thin Films

Multiscale nanoengineering fabrication of air electrode catalysts in rechargeable Zn-air batteries

The development of cost-effective, high-activity and stable catalysts to accelerate the sluggish kinetics of cathodic oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) plays a critical part in commercialization application of rechargeable Zn-air batteries (RZABs). Herein, a multiscale nanoengineering strategy is developed to simultaneously stabilize Co-doped Fe nanoparticles originated from metal-organic framework-derived approach and atomic Fe/Co sites derived from metal nanoparticle-atomized way on N-doped hierarchically tubular porous carbon substrate. Thereinto, metal nanoparticles and single atoms are respectively used to expedite the OER and ORR. Consequently, the final material is acted as an oxygen electrode catalyst, displaying 0.684 V of OER/ORR potential gap, 260 mW cm-2 of peak power density for liquid-state RZAB, 110 mW cm-2 of peak power density for solid-state RZAB, and 1000 charge-discharge cycles without decay, which confirms great potential for energy storage and conversion applications.

Experimental and density functional study of the light-assisted gas-sensing performance of a TiO2-CoFe2O4 heterojunction

Toluene gas as a solvent is widely present in industrial production and indoor decoration, and can seriously harm human health even at low concentrations. Furthermore, toluene can be used as a typical biomarker for disease diagnosis. Therefore, the detection of toluene gas is very important. Herein, a hydrothermal method was used to successfully prepare a TiO₂-CoFe₂O₄ heterostructure for detecting toluene gas. The ultraviolet (UV)-visible diffuse reflectance spectra and photoluminescence spectra showed that the bandgap of the heterojunction was considerably shorter than those of pure TiO₂ and CoFe₂O₄, and the recombination of electron-hole pairs was inhibited. At the same time, the response value of the TiO₂-CoFe₂O₄ heterojunction was 10.5 for 20 ppm toluene at 219 °C, which was much better than those of pure TiO₂ and CoFe₂O₄. Moreover, its response value further increased under UV irradiation. In addition, density functional theory (DFT) was innovatively employed in this study to explain in detail how the heterojunction and UV irradiation can improve gas sensitivity through the calculation of the material energy band, adsorption energy, etc. This work provides a good reference for the preparation of high-efficiency and high-sensitivity gas sensors.

Co3O4/CoFe2O4 Hollow Nanocube Multifunctional Nanozyme with Oxygen Vacancies for Deep-Learning-Assisted Smartphone Biosensing and Organic Pollutant Degradation

Although the application of nanozymes has been widely studied, it is still a huge challenge to develop highly active and multifunctional nanozyme catalysts with a wider application prospect. Co₃O₄/CoFe₂O₄ hollow nanocubes (HNCs) with oxygen vacancies were proposed in this study, which had a porous oxide heterostructure with CoFe₂O₄ as the core and Co₃O₄ as the shell. The Co₃O₄/CoFe₂O₄ HNCs had three enzyme activities: peroxidase-like, oxidase-like, and catalase-like. Combining XPS depth profiling with density functional theory (DFT), the catalytic mechanism of peroxidase-like activity was explored in depth, which was mainly originated from ·OH produced by the synergistic effect between the outer oxygen and inner oxygen and electron transfer between Co and Fe. A colorimetry/smartphone dual sensing platform was designed based on the peroxidase-like activity. Especially, a multifunctional intelligent sensing platform based on deep learning-YOLO v3 algorithm-assisted smartphone was constructed to realize real-time and rapid in situ detection of l-cysteine, norfloxacin, and zearalenone. Surprisingly, the detection limit of norfloxacin was low at 0.015 μM, which was better than that of the newly published detection method in the field of nanozymes. Meanwhile, the detection mechanism of l-cysteine and norfloxacin was successfully investigated by in situ FTIR. In fact, it also showed outstanding applications in detecting l-cysteine in the food environment and norfloxacin in drugs. Furthermore, Co₃O₄/CoFe₂O₄ HNCs also could degrade 99.24% of rhodamine B, along with good reusability even after 10-cycle runs. Therefore, this work provided an in-depth understanding of the synergistic effect between the outer and inner oxygen in the reaction mechanism and an efficient method for establishing a deep-learning-assisted intelligent detection platform. In addition, this research also offered a good guideline for the further development and construction of nanozyme catalysts with multienzyme activities and multifunctional applications.

Synthesis and characterization of mixed ternary transition metal ferrite nanoparticles comprising cobalt, copper and binary cobalt–copper for high-performance supercapacitor applications

Metal ferrites have outstanding electrochemical characteristics owing to the numerous oxidation states of the metal ions, making them promising materials for addressing both sustainable energy conversion and storage and growing environmental issues. Therefore, three nanocrystallites transition metal ferrites, CoFe2O4, CuFe2O4 and Co/CuFe2O4, were synthesized using citrate precursors and used as electrode materials for supercapacitor applications. Mixed transition metal ferrite nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM) complemented with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy and thermal analysis (TGA). The findings illustrated the formation of a single-phase spinel ferrite as proved from XRD data. In addition, the particle shape and particle size obtained from TEM analysis revealed that the as-synthesised nanomaterial exhibited spherical shape with a size ranging from 30 to 50 nm. The result demonstrated that while using a three-electrode configuration, the electrochemical performance of the ferrite nanoparticles achieved a remarkable maximum specific capacitance of 893 Fg−1 at a scan rate of 5 mV s−1. At a current density of 1 Ag−1, Co–Cu ferrite exhibited outstanding cycling stability for 3000 cycles with 90% capacity retention. Based on the aforementioned data, it can be considered that the remarkable electrochemical performance of the Co–Cu ferrite nanocomposites can be considered as promising materials to be used for supercapacitor electrodes.

Real-Time and In Situ Monitoring of the Synthesis of Silica Nanoparticles

The real-time and in situ monitoring of the synthesis of nanomaterials (NMs) remains a challenging task, which is of pivotal importance by assisting fundamental studies (e.g., synthesis kinetics and colloidal phenomena) and providing optimized quality control. In fact, the lack of reproducibility in the synthesis of NMs is a bottleneck against the translation of nanotechnologies into the market toward daily practice. Here, we address an impedimetric millifluidic sensor with data processing by machine learning (ML) as a sensing platform to monitor silica nanoparticles (SiO₂NPs) over a 24 h synthesis from a single measurement. The SiO₂NPs were selected as a model NM because of their extensive applications. Impressively, simple ML-fitted descriptors were capable of overcoming interferences derived from SiO₂NP adsorption over the signals of polarizable Au interdigitate electrodes to assure the determination of the size and concentration of nanoparticles over synthesis while meeting the trade-off between accuracy and speed/simplicity of computation. The root-mean-square errors were calculated as ∼2.0 nm (size) and 2.6 × 10¹⁰ nanoparticles mL^-1 (concentration). Further, the robustness of the ML size descriptor was successfully challenged in data obtained along independent syntheses using different devices, with the global average accuracy being 103.7 ± 1.9%. Our work advances the developments required to transform a closed flow system basically encompassing the reactional flask and an impedimetric sensor into a scalable and user-friendly platform to assess the in situ synthesis of SiO₂NPs. Since the sensor presents a universal response principle, the method is expected to enable the monitoring of other NMs. Such a platform may help to pave the way for translating "sense-act" systems into practice use in nanotechnology.

Efficient electro-Fenton catalysis by self-supported CFP@CoFe2O4 electrode

In this work, the bimetallic iron oxide self-supported electrode was prepared by a simple solvothermal as well as thermal method. CoFe₂O₄ magnetic nanoparticles were grown in situ on the CFP surface and characterized to reveal the morphology, composition, and electrochemical properties of the electrode. Compared to CFP and CFP@Co-Fe, CFP@CoFe₂O₄ equipped more efficient mineralization current efficiency and lower energy consumption due to the improved electrocatalytic capacity of CoFe₂O₄ properly grown on the conductive substrate surface. Further studies showed that the manufactured electrode maintained a high level of stability after continuous operation. According to the free radical trapping experiment, EPR, and liquid mass spectrometry analysis, the rational reaction mechanism of p-nitrophenol was finally proposed, in which ·OH and SO₄·^- were considered as the main active oxidants. This work demonstrated the great potential of establishing an electro-Fenton system based on CoFe₂O₄ immobilized self-supporting cathode for environmental remediation.

Recent Advances in Processing and Applications of Heterobimetallic Oxide Thin Films by Aerosol-assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition

The fabrication of smart, efficient, and innovative devices critically needs highly refined thin-film nanomaterials; therefore, facile, scalable, and economical methods of thin films production are highly sought-after for the sustainable growth of the hi-tech industry. The chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique is widely implemented at the industrial level due to its versatile features. However, common issues with a precursor, such as reduced volatility and thermal stability, restrict the use of CVD to produce novel and unique materials. A modified CVD approach, named aerosol-assisted CVD (AACVD), has been the center of attention due to its remarkable tendency to fabricate uniform, homogenous, and distinct nano-architecture thin films in an uncomplicated and straightforward manner. Above all, AACVD can utilize any custom-made or commercially available precursors, which can be transformed into a transparent solution in a common organic solvent; thus, a vast array of compounds can be used for the formation of nanomaterial thin films. This review article highlights the importance of AACVD in fabricating heterobimetallic oxide thin films and their potential in making energy production (e. g., photoelectrochemical water splitting), energy storage (e. g., supercapacitors), and environmental protection (e. g., electrochemical sensors) devices. A heterobimetallic oxide system involves two metallic species either in a composite, solid solution, or metal-doped metal oxides. Moreover, the AACVD tunable parameters, such as temperature, deposition time, and precursor, which drastically affect thin films microstructure and their performance in device applications, are also discussed. Lastly, the key challenges and issues of scaling up AACVD to the industrial level and processing for emerging functional materials are also highlighted.

Light-Excited Ag-Doped TiO2-CoFe2O4 Heterojunction Applied to Toluene Gas Detection

(1) Background: Toluene gas is widely used in indoor decoration and industrial production, and it not only pollutes the environment but also poses serious health risks. (2) Methods: In this work, TiO₂−CoFe₂O₄−Ag quaternary composite gas-sensing material was prepared using a hydrothermal method to detect toluene. (3) Results: The recombination of electron–hole pairs was suppressed, and the light absorption range was expanded after constructing a heterojunction and doping with Ag, according to ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) diffuse reflectance spectra and photoluminescence spectroscopy. Moreover, in the detection range of toluene gas (3 ppm–50 ppm), the response value of TiO₂−CoFe₂O₄−Ag increased from 2 to 15, which was much higher than that of TiO₂−Ag (1.7) and CoFe₂O₄−Ag (1.7). In addition, the working temperature was reduced from 360 °C to 263 °C. Furthermore, its response/recovery time was 40 s/51 s, its limit of detection was as low as 10 ppb, and its response value to toluene gas was 3–7 times greater than that of other interfering gases under the same test conditions. In addition, the response value to 5 ppm toluene was increased from 3 to 5.5 with the UV wavelength of 395 nm–405 nm. (4) Conclusions: This is primarily due to charge flow caused by heterojunction construction, as well as metal sensitization and chemical sensitization of novel metal doping. This work is a good starting point for improving gas-sensing capabilities for the detection of toluene gas.

Novel dual-template molecular imprinted electrochemical sensor for simultaneous detection of CA and TPH based on peanut twin-like NiFe2O4/CoFe2O4/NCDs nanospheres: Fabrication, application and DFT theoretical study

Hollow peanut-shaped NiFe₂O₄/CoFe₂O₄ twinned nano-spherical shell composite materials have interconnected electron channels and excellent electrochemical performance, which prompted the use of this unique spatial structure to fabricate efficient electrochemical sensors. In this work, N-doped carbon dots (NCDs) incorporated into magnetic NiFe₂O₄/CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticle shell (NiFe₂O₄/CoFe₂O₄/NCDs) modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was applied to construct a dual-template molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) based electrochemistry sensor (NiFe₂O₄/CoFe₂O₄/NCDs/MIP/GCE) for the simultaneous detection of catechin (CA) and theophylline (TPH). MIP was fabricated by an in-situ electrochemical polymerization strategy based on the theoretical exploration and density functional theory (DFT) computer directional simulation to screen out the optimal functional monomer (L-arginine) and the optimal ratio between the dual template molecules (CA and TPH) and functional monomer. The materials were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, and TGA. Besides, electron binding energy, binding constant, and imprinting factor were investigated. With the optimal conditions, the proposed electrochemical dual detection system showed outstanding analytical performance for the simultaneous sensing of CA and TPH, with an ultralow detection limit (LOD, S/N = 3) of 1.3 nM for CA in 0.01-1 μM (R² = 0.9956) and 1-50 μM (R² = 0.9928), as well as a LOD of 20.0 nM for TPH in the linear range of 0.1-100 μM (R² = 0.9939), respectively. Also, the selectivity and anti-interference performances of the fabricated sensor were performed by differential pulse voltammetry and chronoamperometry, and successfully detected the analyte from tea drinks and human urine samples with the recovery rates ranging from 98.22% to 104.76% and relative standard deviations (RSD) were 1.19%-3.81%, demonstrated the sensor has excellent stability, repeatability, and reproducibility, which paves the way for other platforms to use this nanomaterial for the detection of antioxidant in the filed food safety.

The Significance of Buffer Solutions on Corrosion Processes of Cobalt Ferrite CoFe2O4 Thin Film on Different Substrates

BACKGROUND

The spinel ferrite nanoparticles, such as zinc, nickel, and cobalt ferrites have exceptional electronic and magnetic properties. Cobalt ferrite nanomaterial (CoFe2O4) is a hard material that reveals high magnetic, mechanical, and chemical stability.

AIM AND OBJECTIVE

The objective of this research is to predict the corrosion behavior of cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) thin films deposited on different substrates (platinum Pt, stainless steel S.S, and copper Cu) in acidic, neutral, and alkaline medium.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Cobalt ferrite thin films were deposited on platinum, stainless steel, and copper via electrodeposition-anodization process. After that, corrosion resistance of the prepared nanocrystalline cobalt ferrite on different substrates was investigated in acidic, neutral, and alkaline medium using open circuit potential and potentiodynamic polarization measurements. The crystal structure, crystallite size, microstructure, and magnetic properties of the ferrite films were investigated using a combination of XRD, SEM and VSM.

RESULTS

The results of XRD revealed a cubic spinel for the prepared cobalt ferrite CoFe2O4. The average size of crystallites was found to be about 43, 77, and 102 nm precipitated on platinum, stainless steel, and copper respectively. The magnetic properties of which were enhanced by rising the temperature. The sample annealed at 800oC is suitable for practical application as it showed high magnetization saturation and low coercivity. The corrosion resistance of these films depends on the pH of the medium as well as the presence of oxidizing agent.

CONCLUSION

Depending on the obtained corrosion rate, we can recommend that, CoFe2O4 thin film can be used safely in aqueous media in neutral and alkaline atmospheres for Pt and Cu substrates, but it can be used in all pH values for S.S. substrate.

Enhanced electrochemical activities of morphologically tuned MnFe2O4 nanoneedles and nanoparticles integrated on reduced graphene oxide for highly efficient supercapacitor electrodes

The morphology of a nanoparticle strongly controls the path of electronic interaction, which directly correlates with the physicochemical properties and also the electrochemical comportment. Combining it with a two-dimensional (2D) material for a layer-by-layer approach will increase its possibilities in applications such as energy conversion and storage. Here, two different morphologies of MnFe₂O₄, nanoparticles and nanoneedles, are developed by a facile hydrothermal approach and sandwiched with reduced graphene oxide for constructing a 2D/3D sandwiched architecture. The rGO planar structure with abundant hierarchical short pores facilitates the thorough utilization of the utmost surface area to permeate the electrolyte within the structure to minimize the accumulation of rGO nanosheets laterally. The ferrite composited with rGO manifests high specific capacitance as the EDLC behaviour surpasses the faradaic pseudocapacitance boosting electrical conductivity compared to the as-synthesized MnFe₂O₄ structures. Benefiting from a 3D structure and the synergetic contribution of the MnFe₂O₄ nanoneedles and electrically conductive rGO layer, the MnFe₂O₄ nanoneedles@rGO electrode exhibits a high areal capacitance of 890 mF cm^-2 and a remarkable specific capacitance of 1327 F g^-1 at a current density of 5 mA cm^-2. 93.36% of the initial capacitance was retained after 5000 cycles in 1 mol L^-1 Na₂SO₄ indicating its high cycling stability. The synthesis route proves to be beneficial for a comprehensive yield of MnFe₂O₄@rGO nanosheets of different morphologies for use in the sophisticated design of energy-storing devices. This research strongly suggests that nanoparticle geometry, in addition to two-dimensional carbon-based materials, is a critical factor in a supercapacitor design.

Observation of morphology resembling Hydrangea macrophylla flower in SILAR-deposited MFe2O4 (M=Co2+, Ni2+, Mn2+) nanocrystallites: synergetic effect on electrochemical performance

The successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) experimental process has been used to develop a high-efficiency electrode of MFe₂O₄ (M = Ni, Co and Mn) on substrates at ambient temperature. Structural, morphological and electrochemical properties have been investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD), a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an electrochemical test station, respectively. A morphology resembling the Hydrangea macrophylla flower has been observed and tuned with varying Fe concentration. The formation of MFe₂O₄ demonstrates the efficient electrochemical behavior and the specific capacitance has been evaluated as ∼1380, ∼972 and ∼815 Fg^-1 for CoFe₂O₄ (CF), NiFe₂O₄ (NF) and MnFe₂O₄ (MF), respectively, at a current density of 1 Ag^-1. Also, the developed electrodes maintain excellent cyclic retention of ∼92%, ∼89% and ∼86% for CF, NF, and MF, respectively, up to 5000 cycles. Further, asymmetric solid-state supercapacitor (ASC) devices have been fabricated using the best compositions of MFe₂O₄ as a positive electrode and carbon black (CB) as a negative electrode, and successfully illuminate a 1.8 V commercial LED.

Synthesis and potent antimicrobial activity of CoFe2O4 nanoparticles under visible light

The nanoparticles of Cobalt ferrite are synthesized using polyethylene glycol as a solvent by the solvothermal method in a surfactant-free condition. Nanoparticles that were synthesized were determined by using various techniques such as Diffuse Reflection Spectroscopy (DRS), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), and Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX). The Scanning electron microscope confirmed the range of spherical nanoparticles in the size of 20–33 nm.

An excellent match was observed between the calculated particles size in the X-ray diffraction and electron microscopes results. Furthermore, their antimicrobial efficacy was determined by MIC, MBC, IC50 and disc diffusion method on Gram-negative (Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus) bacteria. The results indicated an acceptable bacteriostatic and bactericidal effects of this nanoparticles. Additionally, it was seen that by the increase in the concentration of nanoparticles, their antimicrobial property would increase.

Background and objective

In recent years, antibacterial materials have found a special place to avoid the overuse of antibiotics. In this study, the antibacterial effects of CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus cereus, were investigated due to their importance as human pathogens in nosocomial infection.

Methodology

In this study, the antibacterial effects of CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles such as MIC, MBC, IC50, and disc diffusion method were examined.

Findings

According to the results, CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles exhibited potent antibacterial activity against the bacteria that were examined, especially Bacillus cereus. The MBC (Minimum Bactericidal Concentration) of CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticle on Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus cereus was between 0.12-0.48 mg/ml and MIC (Minimum Inhibition Concentration) on these bacteria detected between 0.06-0.24 mg/ml. The least IC50 determined for Bacillus cereus with a concentration of 0.061 mg/ml. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Bacillus cereus identified as the most resistant and sensitive bacteria in the disc diffusion method, respectively.

Highly efficient nanostructured CoFe2 O4 thin film electrodes for electrochemical degradation of rhodamine B

In this work, we report the application of highly efficient electrodeposited cobalt ferrite (CoFe₂ O₄ ) thin films in electrochemical degradation of rhodamine B. XRD, FTIR and Raman spectroscopic studies confirmed the formation of single phase CoFe₂ O₄ . SEM analysis revealed a very fine nanorods dispersed uniformly with average size around 30 nm. UV-Vis spectrophotometry emphasized that the optical band gap value is 1.6 eV. Moreover, the elaborated CoFe₂ O₄ thin films showed a good efficiency for the electrochemical degradation of an aqueous solution of rhodamine B (RhB) attaining 99% during the first 3 min of reaction time. The trapping experiments revealed that the hydroxyl radicals were the main active species leading to the removal of RhB initial concentration of 10 mg/L in a very short time. PRACTITIONER POINTS: A simple electrodeposition technique was used to fabricate CoFe₂ O₄ thin. XRD and FTIR studies revealed the formation of pure cubic spinel phase. Nano-rod like morphology has been successfully synthesized. The rhodamine B aqueous solution has been completely decolorized using the obtained CoFe₂ O₄ thin films.

Effects of pillar size modulation on the magneto-structural coupling in self-assembled BiFeO3–CoFe2O4 heteroepitaxy

The magneto-structural coupling of BiFeO₃ (BFO)–CoFe₂O₄ (CFO)/LaAlO₃ (LAO) heteroepitaxy with various lateral sizes of CFO pillars embedded in a BFO matrix was investigated.

Pulsed laser deposited CoFe2O4 thin films as supercapacitor electrodes

The influence of the substrate temperature on pulsed laser deposited (PLD) CoFe₂O₄ thin films for supercapacitor electrodes was thoroughly investigated. X-ray diffractometry and Raman spectroscopic analyses confirmed the formation of CoFe₂O₄ phase for films deposited at a substrate temperature of 450 °C. Topography and surface smoothness was measured using atomic force microscopy. We observed that the films deposited at room temperature showed improved electrochemical performance and supercapacitive properties compared to those of films deposited at 450 °C. Specific capacitances of about 777.4 F g⁻¹ and 258.5 F g⁻¹ were obtained for electrodes deposited at RT and 450 °C, respectively, at 0.5 mA cm⁻² current density. The CoFe₂O₄ films deposited at room temperature exhibited an excellent power density (3277 W kg⁻¹) and energy density (17 W h kg⁻¹). Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the series resistance and charge transfer resistance were found to be 1.1 Ω and 1.5 Ω, respectively. The cyclic stability was increased up to 125% after 1500 cycles due to the increasing electroactive surface of CoFe₂O₄ along with the fast electron and ion transport at the surface.

Cobalt ferrite thin films were grown by PLD at different temperatures as an electrode material for supercapacitors. The films deposited at room temperature exhibited the best power density (3277 W kg⁻¹) and energy density (17 W h kg⁻¹) values.

Reversible, Electric-Field Induced Magneto-Ionic Control of Magnetism in Mesoporous Cobalt Ferrite Thin Films

The magnetic properties of mesoporous cobalt ferrite films can be largely tuned by the application of an electric field using a liquid dielectric electrolyte. By applying a negative voltage, the cobalt ferrite becomes reduced, leading to an increase in saturation magnetization of 15% (MS) and reduction in coercivity (HC) between 5-28%, depending on the voltage applied (-10 V to -50 V). These changes are mainly non-volatile so after removal of -10 V MS remains 12% higher (and HC 5% smaller) than the pristine sample. All changes can then be reversed with a positive voltage to recover the initial properties even after the application of -50 V. Similar studies were done on analogous films without induced porosity and the effects were much smaller, underscoring the importance of nanoporosity in our system. The different mechanisms possibly responsible for the observed effects are discussed and we conclude that our observations are compatible with voltage-driven oxygen migration (i.e., the magneto-ionic effect).

Blocking and remanence properties of weakly and highly interactive cobalt ferrite based nanoparticles

We compare both magnetic blocking properties and remanence curves for dilute ferrofluid and powder samples of ferrite magnetic nanoparticles. Low field DC magnetization, AC susceptibility, isothermal remanent magnetization and DC demagnetization techniques are employed to investigate the role of interparticle magnetic interactions on the superparamagnetic relaxation, the magnetic anisotropy and on the super-spin-glass state in closely packed particles. The samples used herein are 3 nm sized spinel-type nanocrystals made of a cobalt ferrite core covered by a layer of maghemite on its outermost surface and can be obtained as aqueous colloidal dispersions thanks to this core-shell strategy. They show large anisotropy attributed to an enhanced surface contribution and the blocking temperature is shifted towards higher values as interparticle distance decreases. For all investigated diluted liquids and powder samples the frequency dependency of the peak temperature is well accounted by a Vogel-Fulcher law, with the insertion of a phenomenological temperature associated to the magnitude of interparticle dipolar interactions. The fractional change of the peak temperature per decade of frequency enlights the presence of interactions between particles in dilute liquids and of a spin-glass-like state in powder samples. The remanence curves always show global demagnetizing behavior, attributed to the combination of both spin surface disorder and interparticle dipolar interactions, the former being predominant in isolated nanoparticles and the latter in powder samples. However, in the most compacted powder, exchange interaction between surface ions of different particles becomes more pronounced and promotes an additive magnetizing effect.

Electrodeposited Nanostructured CoFe2O4 for Overall Water Splitting and Supercapacitor Applications

To contribute to solving global energy problems, a multifunctional CoFe2O4 spinel was synthesized and used as a catalyst for overall water splitting and as an electrode material for supercapacitors. The ultra-fast one-step electrodeposition of CoFe2O4 over conducting substrates provides an economic pathway to high-performance energy devices. Electrodeposited CoFe2O4 on Ni-foam showed a low overpotential of 270 mV and a Tafel slope of 31 mV/dec. The results indicated a higher conductivity for electrodeposited compared with dip-coated CoFe2O4 with enhanced device performance. Moreover, bending and chronoamperometry studies suggest excellent durability of the catalytic electrode for long-term use. The energy storage behavior of CoFe2O4 showed high specific capacitance of 768 F/g at a current density of 0.5 A/g and maintained about 80% retention after 10,000 cycles. These results demonstrate the competitiveness and multifunctional applicability of the CoFe2O4 spinel to be used for energy generation and storage devices.

Nano-RuO2 -Decorated Holey Graphene Composite Fibers for Micro-Supercapacitors with Ultrahigh Energy Density

Compactness and versatility of fiber-based micro-supercapacitors (FMSCs) make them promising for emerging wearable electronic devices as energy storage solutions. But, increasing the energy storage capacity of microscale fiber electrodes, while retaining their high power density, remains a significant challenge. Here, this issue is addressed by incorporating ultrahigh mass loading of ruthenium oxide (RuO2 ) nanoparticles (up to 42.5 wt%) uniformly on nanocarbon-based microfibers composed largely of holey reduced graphene oxide (HrGO) with a lower amount of single-walled carbon nanotubes as nanospacers. This facile approach involes (1) space-confined hydrothermal assembly of highly porous but 3D interconnected carbon structure, (2) impregnating wet carbon structures with aqueous Ru3+ ions, and (3) anchoring RuO2 nanoparticles on HrGO surfaces. Solid-state FMSCs assembled using those fibers demonstrate a specific volumetric capacitance of 199 F cm-3 at 2 mV s-1 . Fabricated FMSCs also deliver an ultrahigh energy density of 27.3 mWh cm-3 , the highest among those reported for FMSCs to date. Furthermore, integrating 20 pieces of FMSCs with two commercial flexible solar cells as a self-powering energy system, a light-emitting diode panel can be lit up stably. The current work highlights the excellent potential of nano-RuO2 -decorated HrGO composite fibers for constructing micro-supercapacitors with high energy density for wearable electronic devices.
