Semiconductor-ionic Membrane of LaSrCoFe-oxide-doped Ceria Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Enabling fast ionic transport in CeO2-La1-2xBaxBixFeO3 nanocomposite electrolyte for low temperature solid oxide fuel cell application

Recent studies indicate that electrolyte ionic conductivity plays a pivotal role in reducing the operating temperature of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In this regard, nanocomposite electrolytes have drawn significant attention owing to their enhanced ionic conductivity and fast ionic transport. In this study, we fabricated CeO₂-La_1-2xBa_xBi_xFeO₃ nanocomposites and tested them as a high-performance electrolyte for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). The prepared samples were characterized by their phase structure, surface, and interface property via transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), followed by being applied in SOFCs to examine their electrochemical performance. In the fuel cells, it was found that the optimal composition 90CeO₂-10La_1-2xBa_xBi_xFeO₃ electrolyte-based SOFC delivered a peak power density of 834 mW cm^-2 along with an open circuit voltage (OCV) of 1.04 V at 550 °C. A comparative study revealed that the nanocomposite electrolyte exhibited a total conductivity of 0.11 S cm^-1 at 550 °C. Moreover, the rectification curve manifested the formation of the Schottky junction, suppressing the electronic conduction. This study conclusively shows that the addition of La_1-2xBa_xBi_xFeO₃ (LBBF) into ceria electrolyte is a viable approach for constructing high-performance electrolytes for LT-SOFCs.

LSCF–WO3 semiconductor composite electrolytes for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells†

The La_0.6Sr_0.4Co_0.2Fe_0.8O_3−δ (LSCF)–WO₃ semiconductor composite was applied as an electrolyte for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LTSOFCs). The study results revealed that the fuel cell could output a maximum power density (P_max) of 812 mW cm⁻² when the weight ratio of LSCF to WO₃ was 8 : 2 (8LSCF–2WO₃), and its open-circuit voltage (OCV) was higher than 1.0 V. This indicated that there was no short circuit problem in this fuel cell device and 80 wt% LSCF existed in the electrolyte layer. This was mainly due to the suppressed electronic conductivity and increased ionic conductivity of the composite as compared with LSCF due to the introduction of the WO₃ wide band semiconductor. The oxygen ionic conductivity of the 8LSCF–2WO₃ electrolyte was 0.337 S cm⁻¹, which is much higher than that of the pure LSCF material. According to the XPS analysis results, a higher oxygen vacancy content at the heterointerface between LSCF and WO₃ contributed to the increased ionic conductivity.

SOFC with 8LSCF–2WO₃ electrolyte exhibited an excellent power density (P_max) of 812 mW cm⁻² at 550 °C due to the increased ionic conductivity and decreased activation energy.

Non-enzymatic electrochemical dopamine sensing probe based on hexagonal shape zinc-doped cobalt oxide (Zn-Co2O4) nanostructure

A non-enzymatic dopamine electrochemical sensing probe was developed. A hexagonal shape zinc-doped cobalt oxide (Zn-Co₂O₄) nanostructure was prepared by a facile hydrothermal approach. The combination of Zn, which has an abundance of electrons, and Co₃O₄ exhibited a synergistically electron-rich nanocomposite. The crystallinity of the nanostructure was investigated using X-ray diffraction. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to examine the surface morphology, revealing hexagonal nanoparticles with an average particle size of 400 nm. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM) was used to confirm the nanostructure of the doped material. The nanostructure's bonding and functional groups were verified using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The electrochemical characterization was conducted by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and amperometry. The resistivity of the electrode was confirmed through EIS and showed that the bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) exhibited higher charge transfer resistance as compared to modified Zn-Co₂O₄/GCE. The sensing probe was developed by modifying the surface of GCE with Zn-Co₂O₄ nanostructure and tested as an electrochemical sensor for dopamine oxidation; it operated best at a working potential of 0.17 V (vs Ag/AgCl). The developed sensor exhibited a low limit of detection (0.002 µM), a high sensitivity (126 µA. µM^-1 cm^-2), and a wide linear range (0.2 to 185 µM). The sensor showed a short response time of < 1 s. The sensor's selectivity was investigated in the presence of coexisting species (uric acid, ascorbic acid, adrenaline, epinephrine, norepinephrine, histamine, serotonin, tyramine, phenethylamine, and glucose) with no effects on dopamine determination results. The developed sensor was also successfully used for determining dopamine concentrations in a real sample.

An Interface Heterostructure of NiO and CeO2 for Using Electrolytes of Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Interface engineering can be used to tune the properties of heterostructure materials at an atomic level, yielding exceptional final physical properties. In this work, we synthesized a heterostructure of a p-type semiconductor (NiO) and an n-type semiconductor (CeO2) for solid oxide fuel cell electrolytes. The CeO2-NiO heterostructure exhibited high ionic conductivity of 0.2 S cm-1 at 530 °C, which was further improved to 0.29 S cm-1 by the introduction of Na+ ions. When it was applied in the fuel cell, an excellent power density of 571 mW cm-1 was obtained, indicating that the CeO2-NiO heterostructure can provide favorable electrolyte functionality. The prepared CeO2-NiO heterostructures possessed both proton and oxygen ionic conductivities, with oxygen ionic conductivity dominating the fuel cell reaction. Further investigations in terms of electrical conductivity and electrode polarization, a proton and oxygen ionic co-conducting mechanism, and a mechanism for blocking electron transport showed that the reconstruction of the energy band at the interfaces was responsible for the enhanced ionic conductivity and cell power output. This work presents a new methodology and scientific understanding of semiconductor-based heterostructures for advanced ceramic fuel cells.

Progress in Material Development for Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells: A Review

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have been considered as promising candidates to tackle the need for sustainable and efficient energy conversion devices. However, the current operating temperature of SOFCs poses critical challenges relating to the costs of fabrication and materials selection. To overcome these issues, many attempts have been made by the SOFC research and manufacturing communities for lowering the operating temperature to intermediate ranges (600–800 °C) and even lower temperatures (below 600 °C). Despite the interesting success and technical advantages obtained with the low-temperature SOFC, on the other hand, the cell operation at low temperature could noticeably increase the electrolyte ohmic loss and the polarization losses of the electrode that cause a decrease in the overall cell performance and energy conversion efficiency. In addition, the electrolyte ionic conductivity exponentially decreases with a decrease in operating temperature based on the Arrhenius conduction equation for semiconductors. To address these challenges, a variety of materials and fabrication methods have been developed in the past few years which are the subject of this critical review. Therefore, this paper focuses on the recent advances in the development of new low-temperature SOFCs materials, especially low-temperature electrolytes and electrodes with improved electrochemical properties, as well as summarizing the matching current collectors and sealants for the low-temperature region. Different strategies for improving the cell efficiency, the impact of operating variables on the performance of SOFCs, and the available choice of stack designs, as well as the costing factors, operational limits, and performance prospects, have been briefly summarized in this work.

Junction and energy band on novel semiconductor-based fuel cells

Fuel cells are highly efficient and green power sources. The typical membrane electrode assembly is necessary for common electrochemical devices. Recent research and development in solid oxide fuel cells have opened up many new opportunities based on the semiconductor or its heterostructure materials. Semiconductor-based fuel cells (SBFCs) realize the fuel cell functionality in a much more straightforward way. This work aims to discuss new strategies and scientific principles of SBFCs by reviewing various novel junction types/interfaces, i.e., bulk and planar p-n junction, Schottky junction, and n-i type interface contact. New designing methodologies of SBFCs from energy band/alignment and built-in electric field (BIEF), which block the internal electronic transport while assisting interfacial superionic transport and subsequently enhance device performance, are comprehensively reviewed. This work highlights the recent advances of SBFCs and provides new methodology and understanding with significant importance for both fundamental and applied R&D on new-generation fuel cell materials and technologies.

Enhancing Bifunctional Electrocatalytic Activities of Oxygen Electrodes via Incorporating Highly Conductive Sm3+ and Nd3+ Double-Doped Ceria for Reversible Solid Oxide Cells

Solid oxide cells (SOCs) are mutually convertible energy devices capable of generating electricity from chemical fuels including hydrogen in the fuel cell mode and producing green hydrogen using electricity from renewable but intermittent solar and wind resources in the electrolysis cell mode. An effective approach to enhance the performance of SOCs at reduced temperatures is by developing highly active oxygen electrodes for both oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions. Herein, highly conductive Sm³⁺ and Nd³⁺ double-doped ceria (Sm_0.075Nd_0.075Ce_0.85O_2-δ, SNDC) is utilized as an active component for reversible SOC applications. We develop a novel La_0.6Sr_0.4Co_0.2Fe_0.8O_3 -δ (LSCF)-SNDC composite oxygen electrode. Compared with the conventional LSCF-Gd-doped ceria oxygen electrode, the LSCF-SNDC exhibits ∼35% lower cathode polarization resistance (0.042 Ω cm² at 750 °C) owing to rapid oxygen incorporation and surface diffusion kinetics. Furthermore, the SOC with the LSCF-SNDC oxygen electrode and the SNDC buffer layer yields a remarkable performance in both the fuel cell (1.54 W cm^-2 at 750 °C) and electrolysis cell (1.37 A cm^-2 at 750 °C) modes because the incorporation of SNDC promotes the surface diffusion kinetics at the oxygen electrode bulk and the activity of the triple phase boundary at the interface. These findings suggest that the highly conductive SNDC material effectively enhances both oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions, thus serving as a promising material in reversible SOC applications at reduced temperatures.

A Bulk-Heterostructure Nanocomposite Electrolyte of Ce0.8Sm0.2O2-δ-SrTiO3 for Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Since colossal ionic conductivity was detected in the planar heterostructures consisting of fluorite and perovskite, heterostructures have drawn great research interest as potential electrolytes for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). However, so far, the practical uses of such promising material have failed to materialize in SOFCs due to the short circuit risk caused by SrTiO₃. In this study, a series of fluorite/perovskite heterostructures made of Sm-doped CeO₂ and SrTiO₃ (SDC-STO) are developed in a new bulk-heterostructure form and evaluated as electrolytes. The prepared cells exhibit a peak power density of 892 mW cm^-2 along with open circuit voltage of 1.1 V at 550 °C for the optimal composition of 4SDC-6STO. Further electrical studies reveal a high ionic conductivity of 0.05-0.14 S cm^-1 at 450-550 °C, which shows remarkable enhancement compared to that of simplex SDC. Via AC impedance analysis, it has been shown that the small grain-boundary and electrode polarization resistances play the major roles in resulting in the superior performance. Furthermore, a Schottky junction effect is proposed by considering the work functions and electronic affinities to interpret the avoidance of short circuit in the SDC-STO cell. Our findings thus indicate a new insight to design electrolytes for low-temperature SOFCs.

High surface area for La1-xSrxFeO3 (x=0, 0.4, 0.6) as bifunctional catalyst for rechargeable Li-O2 batteries

Three-dimensionally mesoporous La_1-xSr_xFeO₃ (x = 0, 0.4, 0.6) precursors have been synthesized through a facile solvothermal process. After high-temperature sintering, La_1-xSr_xFeO₃ still exhibits uniform morphology and good dispersibility, which provides a porous structure and favorable surface area. Particularly, La_0.4Sr_0.6FeO₃ shows the biggest surface area of 58 m² g^-1. Doping also induces the generation of oxygen vacancies and Fe⁴⁺, which is beneficial for the conductivity and catalytic activity of the materials. Complete with favorable structure and electrochemical activity, La_0.4Sr_0.6FeO₃ exhibits bifunctional catalytic activity in alkaline solution. Applied as a cathode catalyst in Li-O₂ batteries, it shows a larger discharge capacity of 23 905 mA h g^-1 and a better cycling stability of 100 cycles.

Approaching Durable Single-Layer Fuel Cells: Promotion of Electroactivity and Charge Separation via Nanoalloy Redox Exsolution

Single-layer fuel cells (SLFCs) based on mixed semiconductors and ionic conductors demonstrate  simplified material preparation and fabrication procedure and possess high performance potentially. However, the operational stability and principle of SLFCs have not yet been convinced of either commercialization or fundamental interests. We hereby report on the employment of a perovskite oxide-based phase-structured redox-stable semiconductor prior to determining a possible solution that improves the durability of the SLFC. Feasible working principles are established and an in-depth understanding of the short-circuit-free phenomenon in SLFCs with the mixed ionic and electronic conductors is provided. Additionally, a smart material design and cell structure processing are also proposed. An extended nonstop testing period of up to 2 days confirms the project feasibility and improved durability of the SLFCs, achieved by replacing the unstable lithiated oxide phase with redox-stable perovskite oxide, though the electrochemical performance is sacrificed. The precipitated metal/alloy nanoparticle on perovskite oxide not only improves the electrode reaction kinetics but also facilitates the charge separation and ionic conduction in SLFCs, consequently enhancing the fuel cell performance and electrical efficiency. The results confirmed the potential of stable operation for future practical deployment of SLFCs via appropriate selection of material and cell structure design. It is greatly believed that the physical junction plays a crucial role in overcoming the internal short-circuit issue of SLFCs.

The sintering temperature effect on electrochemical properties of Ce0.8Sm0.05Ca0.15O2-δ (SCDC)-La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-δ (LSCF) heterostructure pellet

Recently, semiconductor-ionic materials (SIMs) have emerged as new functional materials, which possessed high ionic conductivity with successful applications as the electrolyte in advanced low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). In order to reveal the ion-conducting mechanism in SIM, a typical SIM pellet consisted of semiconductor La_0.6Sr_0.4Co_0.2Fe_0.8O_3-δ (LSCF) and ionic conductor Sm and Ca Co-doped ceria Ce_0.8Sm_0.05Ca_0.15O_2-δ (SCDC) are suffered from sintering at different temperatures. It has been found that the performance of LSCF-SCDC electrolyte fuel cell decreases with the sintering temperature, the cell assembled from LSCF-SCDC pellet sintered at 600 °C exhibits a peak power density (P_max) of 543 mW/cm² at 550 °C and also excellent performance of 312 mW/cm² even at LT (500 °C). On the contrary, devices based on 1000 °C pellet presented a poor P_max of 106 mW/cm². The performance difference may result from the diverse ionic conductivity of SIM pellet through different temperatures sintering. The high-temperature sintering could severely destroy the interface between SCDC and LSCF, which provide fast transport pathways for oxygen ions conduction. Such phenomenon provides direct and strong evidence for the interfacial conduction in LSCF-SCDC SIMs.

Semiconductor-Ionic Nanocomposite La0.1Sr0.9MnO3-δ-Ce0.8Sm0.2O2-δ Functional Layer for High Performance Low Temperature SOFC

A novel composite was synthesized by mixing La_0.1Sr_0.9MnO_3−δ (LSM) with Ce_0.8Sm_0.2O_2−δ (SDC) for the functional layer of low temperature solid oxide fuel cell (LT-SOFC). Though LSM, a highly electronic conducting semiconductor, was used in the functional layer, the fuel cell device could reach OCVs higher than 1.0 V without short-circuit problem. A typical diode or rectification effect was observed when an external electric force was supplied on the device under fuel cell atmosphere, which indicated the existence of a junction that prevented the device from short-circuit problem. The optimum ratio of LSM:SDC = 1:2 was found for the LT-SOFC to reach the highest power density of 742 mW·cm⁻² under 550 °C The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy data highlighted that introducing LSM into SDC electrolyte layer not only decreased charge-transfer resistances from 0.66 Ω·cm² for SDC to 0.47–0.49 Ω·cm² for LSM-SDC composite, but also decreased the activation energy of ionic conduction from 0.55 to 0.20 eV.

Study on Zinc Oxide-Based Electrolytes in Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Semiconducting-ionic conductors have been recently described as excellent electrolyte membranes for low-temperature operation solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). In the present work, two new functional materials based on zinc oxide (ZnO)-a legacy material in semiconductors but exceptionally novel to solid state ionics-are developed as membranes in SOFCs for the first time. The proposed ZnO and ZnO-LCP (La/Pr doped CeO₂) electrolytes are respectively sandwiched between two Ni_0.8Co_0.15Al_0.05Li-oxide (NCAL) electrodes to construct fuel cell devices. The assembled ZnO fuel cell demonstrates encouraging power outputs of 158-482 mW cm^-2 and high open circuit voltages (OCVs) of 1-1.06 V at 450-550 °C, while the ZnO-LCP cell delivers significantly enhanced performance with maximum power density of 864 mW cm^-2 and OCV of 1.07 V at 550 °C. The conductive properties of the materials are investigated. As a consequence, the ZnO electrolyte and ZnO-LCP composite exhibit extraordinary ionic conductivities of 0.09 and 0.156 S cm^-1 at 550 °C, respectively, and the proton conductive behavior of ZnO is verified. Furthermore, performance enhancement of the ZnO-LCP cell is studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which is found to be as a result of the significantly reduced grain boundary and electrode polarization resistances. These findings indicate that ZnO is a highly promising alternative semiconducting-ionic membrane to replace the electrolyte materials for advanced LT-SOFCs, which in turn provides a new strategic pathway for the future development of electrolytes.
