Tailorable polypyrrole nanofilms with exceptional electrochemical performance for all-solid-state flexible supercapacitors

Strain induced electrochemical behaviors of ionic liquid electrolytes in an electrochemical double layer capacitor: Insights from molecular dynamics simulations

Electrochemical Double Layer Capacitors (EDLCs) with ionic liquid electrolytes outperform conventional ones using aqueous and organic electrolytes in energy density and safety. However, understanding the electrochemical behaviors of ionic liquid electrolytes under compressive/tensile strain is essential for the design of flexible EDLCs as well as normal EDLCs, which are subject to external forces during assembly. Despite many experimental studies, the compression/stretching effects on the performance of ionic liquid EDLCs remain inconclusive and controversial. In addition, there is hardly any evidence of prior theoretical work done in this area, which makes the literature on this topic scarce. Herein, for the first time, we developed an atomistic model to study the processes underlying the electrochemical behaviors of ionic liquids in an EDLC under strain. Constant potential non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations are conducted for EMIM BF4 placed between two graphene walls as electrodes. Compared to zero strain, low compression of the EDLC resulted in compromised performance as the electrode charge density dropped by 29%, and the performance reduction deteriorated significantly with a further increase in compression. In contrast, stretching is found to enhance the performance by increasing the charge storage in the electrodes by 7%. The performance changes with compression and stretching are due to changes in the double-layer structure. In addition, an increase in the value of the applied potential during the application of strain leads to capacity retention with compression revealed by the newly performed simulations.

Ice-templated synthesis of tungsten oxide nanosheets and their application in arsenite oxidation

Tungsten oxide (WO₃) nanosheets were prepared as catalysts to activate hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) in arsenite (As(III)) oxidation. Ice particles were employed as templates to synthesize the WO₃ nanosheets, enabling easy template removal via melting. Transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy revealed that the obtained WO₃ nanosheets were plate-like, with lateral sizes ranging from dozens of nanometers to hundreds of nanometers and thicknesses of <10 nm. Compared to that of the WO₃ nanoparticle/H₂O₂ system, a higher efficiency of As(III) oxidation was observed in the WO₃ nanosheet/H₂O₂ system. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy, radical quenching studies, and As(III) oxidation experiments under anoxic conditions suggested that the hydroperoxyl radical (HO₂^●) acted as the primary oxidant. The WO₃ nanosheets possessed numerous surface hydroxyl groups and electrophilic metal centers, enhancing the production of HO₂^● via H₂O₂ activation. Various anions commonly present in As(III)-contaminated water exhibited little effect on As(III) oxidation in the WO₃ nanosheet/H₂O₂ system. The high oxidation efficiency was maintained by adding H₂O₂ when it was depleted, suggesting that the catalytic activity of the WO₃ nanosheets did not deteriorate after multiple catalytic cycles.

A Simple Trick to Increase the Areal Specific Capacity of Polypyrrole Membrane: The Superposition Effect of Methyl Orange and Acid Treatment

Polypyrrole (PPy) is one of the attractive conducting polymers that have been investigated as energy storage materials in devices like supercapacitors. Previously, we have reported a free-standing soft PPy membrane synthesized through interfacial polymerization in which methyl orange (MO) and ferric chloride were used as nano template and oxidant. In this work, we report that the presence of MO and the treatment of the PPy-MO membrane with sulfuric acid can dramatically increase the specific capacitance of the membrane. The properties of the membranes were evaluated using scanning electron microscope (SEM) for morphology, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) for chemistry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) for thermal stability, and cyclic voltammetry (CV), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for electrochemical activity. It was found that the areal specific capacitance of the PPy membrane increased from 2226 mF/cm2 to 6417 mF/cm2 and the charge transfer resistivity decreased from about 17 Ω to 3 Ω between 10,000 and 0.1 Hz due to the presence of MO and the acid treatment. It is likely that the superposition effect of MO and acid treatment helped the charge transfer process and consequently enhanced the charge storage performance and specific capacitance of the PPy membrane.

Interface-assisted synthesis: a gateway to effective nanostructure tuning of conducting polymers

The interface-assisted polymerization technique can be viewed as a powerful emerging tool for the synthesis of conducting polymers (CPs) on a large scale. Contrary to other bulk or single-phase polymerization techniques, interface-assisted synthesis strategies offer effective nanostructure control in a confined two-dimensional (2-D) space. This review focuses on the types of interfaces, mechanism at the interface, advantages and future perspectives of the interfacial polymerization in comparison to conventional polymerization techniques. Hence, the primary focus is on briefing the different types of the chemical methods of polymerization, followed by uniqueness in the reaction dynamics of interface polymerization. The classification of interfaces into four types (liquid/solid, gas/liquid, liquid/liquid, and gas/solid) is based on the versatility and underlying mechanistic pathway of the polymerization of each type. The role of interface in tuning the nanostructure of CPs and the performance evaluation of pristine CPs based on the electrical conductivity are also discussed. Finally, the future outlook of this emerging field is discussed and proposed in detail through some multifunctional applications of synthesized conducting polymers.

Preparation of Fe3O4@polypyrrole composite materials for asymmetric supercapacitor applications

The assembled Fe3O4@PPy//MoO3 asymmetric coin supercapacitor exhibits a high energy density and excellent cycling stability.

Vapor/liquid polymerization of ultraporous transparent and capacitive polypyrrole nanonets

Freestanding, contiguous, and translucent polypyrrole nanonets are prepared within 90 minutes at room temperature in Petri dishes by exposing aqueous oxidant to static pyrrole vapor. The nanonets are 150 nm thick, with variable densities depending on polymerization time. The nanonets maintain a low sheet resistance of 29.1 Ω□^-1 at 30% optical transmission, and 423 Ω□^-1 at 50% transmission. A mechanism is proposed in which polypyrrole islands serve as nucleation sites for further surface-tension constrained polymerization. The nanonets exhibit a high degree of electrochemical dopability (over 24%). Nets are robust and processable, as evidenced by their ability to drape over 2D and 3D substrates. Large areas of films are manually twisted into highly porous sub-millimeter diameter conductive wires, able to recover their two-dimensional structure upon immersion in solvents. Moreover, nanonets exhibit a high specific capacitance of 518 F g^-1 for a 1.2 V potential window. Electrochemical capacitors fabricated with nanonet active electrodes show a high energy density of 9.86 W h kg^-1 at 1775 W kg^-1 when charged to 0.8 V.

Designing a Novel Polymer Electrolyte for Improving the Electrode/Electrolyte Interface in Flexible All-Solid-State Electrical Double-Layer Capacitors

A novel copolymer, polyurethane-poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), is successfully synthesized from poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) backbone cross-linked with waterborne polyurethane (WPU). This sticky polymer, which is neutralized with 1 M KOH and then soaked in 1 M KOH (denoted as WPU-PAAK-K), provides an ionic conductivity greater than 10^-2 S cm^-1 and acts as a gel electrolyte perfectly improving the electrode/electrolyte interfaces in a flexible all-solid-state electrical double-layer capacitor (EDLC). The PAA backbone chains in the copolymer increase the amount of carboxyl groups and promote the segmental motion. The carboxyl groups enhance the water-uptake capacity, which facilitates the ion transport and promotes the ionic conductivity. The cross-linked agent, WPU chains, effectively maintains the rich water content and provides mechanical stickiness to bind two electrodes together. An acid-treated carbon paper (denoted as ACP) combining with such a gel polymer electrolyte demonstrates excellent capacitive behavior with a high areal capacitance of 211.6 mF cm^-2 at 10 mV s^-1. A full cell consisting of ACP/WPU-PAAK-K/ACP displays a low equivalent series resistance of 0.44 Ω from the electrochemical impedance spectroscopic results. An all-solid-state ACP/WPU-PAAK-K/ACP EDLC provides an areal specific capacitance of 94.6 mF cm^-2 at 1 mA cm^-2. This device under 180° bending shows a capacitance retention over 90%, revealing its remarkable flexibility.
